Chapter 141

"DID WE GET A trace on that?" Zain clenched Crystal's phone in one hand and pointed at Max with the other."I barely got the request in." Max held his hands out."Shit." Zain jabbed the speed dial to Gavin. Hopefully the kid wasn't-"Yeah, boss?""Gavin, I need you to run a trace on a call that just came into a number. Ready?""Shoot."Zain recited Crystal's number from memory and waited. Crystal stared at him, eyes wide, hands clasped. They were all on pins and needles. So far, they'd had a name and a list of crimes-then nothing.Until now."Hey, boss, I ran across something," Gavin said slowly."You get a location yet?" Zain knew these things took time. It wasn't as instantaneous as it was on TV but he needed to know now."It's running. So I was going over the Dark Matter people, financials, phones, the usual-and I ran across a weird phone registered to that Cliff guy.""Yeah? Send it to me.""Hey guys-what's going on?" Patricia paused in the doorway, cups of

Chapter 142

ZAIN LEANED FORWARD, URGING Max's SUV faster. The red and white lights cleared the road ahead of them, but they were still twenty minutes out."Yes, this is Detective Bowman-I need two units to go to this address. We believe a hostage situation is underway." Max had conducted this same conversation three times, working his way through to someone who could assist. The address the phone line Andrea had called from was in another department's jurisdiction. This was where it got sticky, and when being a private contractor was most convenient. Zain didn't have to care about who had jurisdiction or not when he was out to protect someone. All he wanted was for the bad guys to get what was coming to them-and the client to get extracted safely.Only this time he wanted blood.Kevin Lee was a dead man; he just didn't know it yet."For fuck's sake." Max jammed the radio into the dash holder and got both hands on the wheel. "Units are en route. They should be there in ten minutes."It

ZAIN PUSHED THE PASSENGER door to the SUV open before it came to a complete stop. The rain was puttering out, just a few drops here and there."Where is she?" he asked the first uniform he saw."House is empty," the officer said, brows drawn down, no doubt wondering who the hell he was."Detective Bowman." Max was right behind Zain, flashing his badge. "Did you search the house?""Yeah, bottom to top." The officer hooked his thumbs in his belt. "No one's inside. Front door was open when we got here. There's a car in the garage. We're starting to sweep the property now. There's five acres to cover."Zain turned, peering into the trees.Either she was out there somewhere, or she was already gone.Zain went to the stairs and peered at the ground. The flagstone path leading to the front door wouldn't tell him any secrets. He picked his way out, searching what he could see of the ground for some sign, but the hard rain had washed any traces of her passing away.A sharp, shor

Chapter 144

KEVIN SHIFTED IN THE chair.Everything hurt. That one-armed asshole had landed way more blows than Kevin thought possible. His jaw was swollen, he was pretty sure he'd bit a chunk out of his tongue, and then there were his ribs. They still hurt from their bathroom brawl. But Kevin couldn't complain too much. Yeah, things weren't going how he wanted them to, but they were still on track. He could spin this to go Speckles' way.And the bonus? No manslaughter charges. Yet.Speckles would have to pull his weight and find out where the files were and get rid of them or they were both fucked.Kevin, on the other hand, could deal with pretty much any other sentence with good behavior. Two officers entered the room, neither speaking to him. Detective Bowman had spoken to Kevin at the cabin, but there were no cameras. Nothing to document his confession, so he'd held his tongue until now.Saving it for the audience.Bowman sank into the chair across from Kevin, a thick folder in

Chapter 145

"I FEEL LIKE CRAP." Andrea didn't dare move. Crystal's sofa cradled her body and she was weighted down by at least three cats, all purring in unison."You don't look like crap anymore." Crystal plopped down on a beanbag chair next to her, a tablet in hand, sucking on a lollipop. It was late, they were all exhausted, and yet the last thing anyone wanted to do was sleep."Thanks. I think." Andrea pushed her hair back, but even that hurt. She'd turned down the offer of anything stronger than an over-the-counter pain killer. Maybe that was a mistake."How you doing? Wanna talk about it yet?"Andrea turned her head, staring up at the ceiling. Did she?"Okay, I'll take that as a no, then," Crystal said. "Can we talk about the convention at least? How'd you meet Zain?""Elevator.""I know that. I mean...you know what I want to know." Crystal prodded Andrea's shoulder with a finger.Yes, Andrea knew exactly what Crystal was after, and she didn't know if she was emotionally read

Chapter 146

ZAIN PARKED THE FIAT in one of the service entry parking spaces. That Crystal's parents had need of a service entry was weird enough. That the spaces were almost full was even stranger. The main house was a four-story, modern construction made to look old and stately, yet with all the latest conveniences. The two-story cottage down the walk where Crystal lived was larger than most family homes and yet next to where her parents called home, it looked small and modest in comparison.Andrea was here. Behind eight-foot fences. With a security guard on watch. And a police unit on patrol. She was here and she was safe. She didn't need him, but he needed her.He was halfway to the house when his phone rang.It was nearing four in the morning. What the hell?He glanced at the screen, expecting it to be Max-instead it was Gavin. With the time difference, it was close to six for the kid and he was not an early riser. So what was the emergency?"Yeah?" Zain said, answering the phone.

Chapter 147

THE SUN WAS COMING up and Andrea's eyelids were getting heavy, yet she still couldn't let herself close them. Every time she did, she saw Kevin's face.Zain sat on the love seat a few feet away, but it felt like a greater distance was being wedged between them. She was the one who usually pulled away. Now she was on the receiving end. She didn't like it"Oh-it's dad. Mind if I pause this?" Crystal asked."No, go ahead," Zain said. He'd somehow managed to avoid being covered in cats, unlike Andrea. It wasn't that she didn't like them. She did. They just shed and left her covered in a fur coat she couldn't take off. She stared down at a black cat named January who was particularly fond of her. His big, amber eyes were partially closed.Okay, so she could see having one cat. Like January. But she wasn't going to be a crazy cat lady like Crystal."Hey, dad." Crystal got up, hauling a cat off with her into the big living room.Zain turned, his gaze warm. Familiar. Welcome."

Chapter 148

Andrea loved him.The thought resonated inside of her, the scary reality of it immobilizing her for a moment. She loved him. When the hell had that happened?Andrea wanted to run, wanted to hide under the bed or in a closet, but that would mean not being near Zain. And she couldn't see that as an option. Either she had to stop loving him or get over this new need for him. She didn't like those choices. He pulled her up against his chest, swooping down for a hot kiss, his tongue thrusting into her mouth. He tugged her hoodie off, taking her tank top with it. Since she and Crystal had vastly different bra sizes and Andrea's was pretty much disgusting, she hadn't bothered to put one on after her shower. She fought the urge to cover herself and kept her arms down by her sides."What's wrong?" Zain asked. "Do you want me to stop?"She had no doubt he would stop-and then she'd die. Or want to die.Andrea shook her head. She couldn't speak without fear of what would come out o

Chapter 149

ZAIN COULDN'T LOOK AWAY from Andrea's slowly widening gaze. Why was he still talking?Could he just shut up already?Of the list of things he should not be saying, he'd covered at least half of them in a few sentences. He needed to put a sock in it now, but the damage might already have been done. Especially if her wide-eyed, staring at the ceiling gaze was anything to go by.He clenched his teeth together.Andrea wrapped her hand around his prosthetic, holding it tight, if her white knuckles were anything to go by.Zain opened his mouth to say something-smooth it all over-but the words were stuck in his throat. He didn't want to take back what he'd said. He'd meant it."I have a bad habit." Andrea was still staring at the ceiling.Of what? Letting guys fall in love with her and then crushing their souls? Or was it just him?"Okay." He swallowed and steeled himself for the let-down."I ruin relationships. I like someone and I get scared of where it's going. That I'm

Chapter 150

ANDREA SNIPPED TAGS OFF the new jeans and stepped into them. There were serious perks that came with having a loaded friend. At some point, while they slept through most of the day, one of Crystal's family employees had been dispatched to get her something to wear. Probably because Crystal's parents were appalled by anyone in sweatpants. Judging by the near perfect fit, Andrea could only assume that someone in the Great House had her sizes on file. Not surprising, since she'd done a fair amount of laundry here, and it seemed like any time she voiced a preference someone remembered it."Andrea," Crystal bellowed from somewhere below, "food's here!"Andrea slid her feet into fuzzy slippers and checked her phone. Zain had woken up first, showered and was gone before she'd managed to get both eyes open.No messages. What was he up to?Where'd he gone? And why did it hurt so much to not have him near her?She packed up her emotional mess and headed downstairs, collecting a tra
