Chapter Thirty One

"Come on. Let's eat," I said, winking and he slipped out from under me. “Wait. First, where is your bathroom?" Nicholas asked.I rolled my eyes before I responded to his question. "Over there," I said.He smiled dashingly as he walked in the direction I pointed to. I shook my head in disbelief as I watched his tall figure walk away. At that moment, my ears tuned in to the familiar sound of the front door clicking open. I glance up anxiously and felt a weight I hadn't even realized was on my shoulders disappear when I was blessed with the reassuring sight of Rianne, looking as flawless and groomed to perfection as always. She entered through the doorway with her arms full to the brim with groceries. However, it seemed that she simply forgot this fact because the moment she noticed me standing there, all the things in her arms fell to the floor with a clatter and I was instantly enveloped in a tight hug. "Oh my God, Ophelia! You're okay!" she exclaimed.I found myself glancing behind

Chapter Thirty Two

I woke up with a jolt, and my breathing was ragged as my mind raced. Will these nightmares ever go away? I asked myself.I shook off the eerie flashing images rattling through my mind as I scrambled out of bed. Almost instantly, all of the responsibilities I had been neglecting for the past week come crashing down on me. I was finally forced to accept that I needed to start searching for a new job sooner rather than later. I spent multiple hours last night deliberating on whether or not asking Nicholas for my old job back would be a good idea. I knew he likely wouldn't hesitate to give it back to me, considering how difficult it was to quit in the first place but could that even work? It would mean that the only way I could get fired would be if we broke up. Would working with my boyfriend as my boss be weird? Boyfriend? Was he even my boyfriend? He said he would try dating but we hadn't had that conversation yet. I slipped on a light wash yellow tank top and blue jeans before he

Chapter Thirty Three

I had said practically every curse word in the book in nervousness by the time Thursday came around, and at 2:00 PM, I found myself pacing around the living room in anxiousness as I awaited Nicholas's arrival. I knew it was at least half an hour's drive away. Everything in the city centre was, so the fact that I likely wouldn't be as ridiculously early as I was used to was nerve wracking enough in itself. Eventually, my restlessness got the best of me and I finally used the phone Nicholas lent to me to text him. Me: Hey. What time are you coming?I had to endure an agonizing five minute wait before he replied. Nicholas: Something came up, and I am sorry. Is it too late to get a taxi? I felt a small stab of disappointment, but I pushed it away. Then I started typing out a reply.Me: No. Don't worry about it.I was sure that my reply most certainly conveyed my slight irritation. He, for one, should have known how important punctuality was in order to make a good impression. It cou

Chapter Thirty Four

I stared up at the towering building. "Kendrick Incorporation" it read in huge and bold letters, the same way it did when I first stood here staring up at it, right before I walked into the building and attended that single job interview that changed my life for good. I peeked through the glass windows, scanning the lobby for anyone I recognized. Am I really doing this? Am I really showing up at Nicholas's workplace uninvited? I asked myself.Yes, I am. Because he had made no effort to contact me since he blew me off before my interview with Baylor Publishing, and regarding the event in Queens, I tried to pretend that I could function without the closure. But frankly, I preferred to walk in and see him making out with another woman and understand all the silence than to have sat around relieving our past conversations and wondering what it was that I did wrong. However, the second that thought came into my mind, I took it back immediately. No, I would have preferred him to ignore

Chapter Thirty Five

"I want to kiss you but I don't want to catch whatever it is you have," I said.He laughed at that; a true, whole body consuming laugh that caused me to move as well. I joined in as well, laying my head on his chest. "Maybe, but just don't kiss me on the lips," he said and I could almost hear his smirk. My heart skipped a beat when I met his penetrating gaze. Oh! He means I should kiss him on the cheek, I figured.I was unable to stop smiling as I leaned in, ever so slowly, to plant a kiss on his cheek. But just as my lips were about to come in contact with his, I decided to leave a single light kiss on his jaw instead. He inhaled sharply as I started to leave feather light kisses all the way down his throat until I got to the base of his neck. I glanced up, meeting his eyes as if I was asking for his approval, and the beaming grin I received from him was more than enough to encourage me to continue my trail across to his collarbone, which was clearly visible above his soft linen

Chapter Thirty Six

“Your place or mine?" I snapped out of my daydream at the sound of Nicholas's husky voice. “Huh? Oh, um… mine," I stuttered. He arched a single brow at my reply, before repeating it to someone that I didn't recognize who was seated with a perfect posture in the driver's seat. I tried my best not to look offended by his reaction, but I was pretty sure I failed miserably because I felt him nudge me lightly in the ribs after a beat of silence. “Don't sulk, Ophelia. I happen to like your apartment very much," he said and now it was my turn to raise a brow. "Okay, well, it is on the cozy side," he said and I scoffed at his words before he continued. “But I am not complaining because it also has a smaller bed." My face heated up as he smirked suggestively, his eyes dark and brooding, before he slid closer to me, his fingers brushing my hip. "Is sex all you think about?" I asked without thinking. The moment I realized what I just said, I glanced consciously at the driver in the fron

Chapter Thirty Seven

When I opened the door, I was greeted by a large pair of frightened brown eyes, which ended up belonging to a delivery boy with a mop of curly brown hair atop his head. My heart clenched at his resemblance to William, but it was faint so I plastered a dazzling smile on my face. His jaw dropped open when he saw me, and I decided to take it as a compliment as he slowly handed me the pizza box. "Um, hi, I am Mick," he said.I blinked awkwardly as he slapped his palm on his forehead. "Oh, sorry! You probably didn't need to know that." I tried for a reassuring laugh as I fished out my purse. "No, it is okay. I am Ophelia." "That's a pretty name,” he commented with a shy smile, and I could feel the pink tinting my cheeks as I handed him the money. The second the notes left my hand, he fumbled and dropped them, and we both watched as they fluttered slowly to the ground. "Sorry!" he apologized again as he stooped to pick them up. "It is okay, you don't have to be so nervous," I said wi

Chapter Thirty Eight

We sat in silence for a few seconds, and I wondered if I should say something. "Okay, if that is a pro of dating, what is a con, then?" he asked innocently, and I blinked frantically. Why was he me asking this? "I don't know… Uh, maybe the jealousy?" I said with a small frown, but Nicholas seemed unaware of this because I was pretty sure I saw him grin. "Oh, yes. You were so jealous of that flight attendant on the flight over to Washington." I choked on my gasp. So he remembered that? "I was not!" I exclaimed, protesting what I knew was true.Since I was appalled by his very true accusation, I decided to retaliate with something I knew would tick him off. "Oh, wait, did you hear that? I think Mick is waiting for me outside, or maybe it is William or even Mike?" I said with a giggle and watched as his face dropped, then he flushed with relief as he realized that I was just kidding. "I thought you were serious for a moment there," he said as he joined me in laughter, his eyes c

Chapter Thirty Nine

Eventually, the door clicked open and he reappeared, freshly shaven with his hair washed and combed. The room was instantly enveloped in the revitalizing scent of body wash and what I thought was a moisturizer as he set his clothes down on the vanity mirror beside him. I noticed that he was wearing a pair of black sweatpants but still had the shirt he wore today on. Did Shane forget a T-shirt or something? "Do you mind if I take my shirt off?" Ohh…I nearly spluttered through my answer, thankful he wasn't looking in my direction as he took a seat on the very corner of my bed. "Um, uh…" "I only asked because I noticed your reaction earlier. I wouldn't want to be…” He tilted his head from side to side a few times as if he was weighing his options on how to complete that sentence. "Intrusive," he finally finished. "No, it is fine. Really," I said, attempting and hopefully succeeding to appear indifferent as I stood up to grab my own pajamas. I tried to leave the room before the in

Chapter Forty

When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was that I was way too hot. Then I realized why. Nicholas was wrapped around me like silk, his long legs entangled with mine and one arm draped over me, pinning me to the bed. Those all too familiar butterflies filled my stomach completely as I softly combed through his disheveled hair. He stirred slightly but didn't wake up as I slowly shuffled out from beneath him. I released a breath of relief as I opened the window and the cool outside air hit me. The driveway outside was heavily coated in autumn leaves, and I couldn't help but smile as a cheery family of four walked down the road outside. I was grinning from ear to ear since I was in an unbelievably good mood as I stretched my arms above my head. “What a beautiful sight to wake up to.” I jumped at his voice, but soon the shock subsided and I was soon blushing like a school girl as Nicholas shuffled into an upright position and smiled back at me. He rubbed his eyes tiredly as I sat d
