71. I Lead, You Follow

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "In the case of the State versus Cassandra York, we, the jury find the defendant... guilty of medical malpractice on that single occasion." Selena gasped. Her heart thundered in her chest. No. It couldn't be. This had to be wrong. She would never let them take the doctor away. Cassandra narrowed her eyes towards judge Darcy, unfazed by those heavy words. Somehow, she already knew that this couldn't be all that this woman had to say to her. She felt Selena gripping her arm, her nails digging into her flesh out of fear. “… but given that the footage doesn’t provide enough evidence of the real situation and that the victim, Selena Chase willingly confirmed that what happened was consensual, you will only be fined $ 12,000 and your license will be temporarily suspended for a duration of two years starting today.” Cassandra exhaled slowly, acknowledging her words, “Alright.” “You will be assessed by the Medical Board after this period to see if you are apt to c

72. Bad At Dates

Three months later The doctor has been driving for quite a while now and she still had no idea where she was taking her. She didn't say a word about this trip. She had just handed her a beautiful blue dress, told her to wear it and there she was, dying with impatience as they were driving into the unknown. Selena hummed, excitingly looking outside the window, “Sooo, you really won’t tell me where we’re going, huh?” “Nops.” She watched the doctor smoothly steering the wheel with her left hand, a bit amazed at the control she had. She was sophisticatedly dressed, wearing a burgundy suit with a stylish blazer and high heels. She exuded sex appeal accompanied with that usual air of intimidation of hers. She bit her lower lips, secretly fangirling over her, “God, I can't. You look so sexy in that suit… Are we like… maybe, going to a five-star restaurant or something?” She smiled slowly, dazzling her, making her heart race, “You’re relentless.” Selena pouted, crossing h

73. Warm Colors

“Very well. Let’s take this to your father’s room then.”Selena swallowed hard. She realized that she still feared him. For all the times he had degraded her about ruining the family reputation, when he strongly and constantly opposed her career in arts, making sure no art institute would accept her. It made her depressed just by thinking how he was forcing her to forego the only thing she loved... and when he had burnt her paintings... it had been the last straw. She still recalled the warmth of his blood trickling down her fingers, down her scraper tool as she had stabbed him... and strangely, she had not regretted it. Not a bit.Reluctantly, she followed her mother and her siblings, her fear intensifying at every step she took in that direction. She timidly laced her fingers through Cassandra’s as they walked and the doctor gave her a comforting smile. She wasn’t afraid to face her fears, not when she was with her.As she passed by a specific door, she briefly paused, a violent tur

74. Blessings

When her siblings left the room, Selena frowned towards her father. It seemed that Veronica had not been exaggerating when she told her that their father was sick... because right now as she looked at him, she could barely recognize him. He seemed to have lost a lot of weight and looked quite pale. Who would have thought that this was indeed Gregory Alexander Chase, one of the cleverest sharks in the law industry? She approached the bed, brought her arms around herself before asking, filling the silence, “Here I am. So make it quick… because the last person I want to see on Earth is you.” She made sure her tone was harsh. She made sure that he would understand that she was still furious at him and nothing would ever change between them. He seemed to be in a daze as he observed her, watching how beautiful she was. It had only been a few years and it felt as if it had been an eternity since he saw her, “Selena…” She gritted, “Don’t take my name.” Gregory Chase sighed, loo

75. The Proposal

Two months later Tuscany, Italy “You keep following the river downstream, signorina. It’s the easy part. Easy part, I tell you! You will reach your hotel in about one hour. Tutto bene?” “Va bene, signore. Grazie!” Cassandra responded to the young Italian man before he bent down, disentangling the rope from the inflatable raft. It began floating away on the water and Selena squealed, trembling with excitement, holding her oar as the guide had instructed them, “Here we go, Cass! Oh it’s gonna be so good!” She hastily grabbed her Nikon camera, turning around to snap a picture of the doctor before focusing right ahead. She held her breath, observing the greenery that bordered the banks of the river, providing an ethereal atmosphere. She had always wanted to do some rafting. The air felt so fresh. The wind blew against her face as the sun shone right above her head. The water was so soothingly gentle. She broadly smiled, mockingly saying as she gazed at the doctor ov

76. The White Coat

Eight months later Museum of Modern Arts, Manhattan Selena held her breath, seeing everything moving fast around her. A famous exhibit designer was standing by her side, going through a detailed plan of how the items would be displayed. She talked about wall colors and layouts, constantly asking Selena for her approval. She saw the workers handling her canvases, installing and hanging her art pieces all around the area under the close supervision of designer. Rodriguo Gonzalez walked into the room, spreading his arms wide open as he laughed in her direction, speaking loudly without a care, “Selena! Selena, my dear! This is wonderful!” Selena grinned, meeting him halfway, accepting the big hug and quick loud pecks on her cheeks, “Thank you so much! It wouldn’t be possible without you!” He scoffed, “Don’t let me take all the credit, my dear. You have such a beautiful soul. I’ll check in with the director to go over some final details and I’ll be back to you.” “Thanks, take your time

77. April

Act of Love Adoption Centre Selena didn’t need to ask Cassandra how she felt to know that she was anxious. It was the first time she had seen her, taking so much time to choose the appropriate clothes to appear friendly and the funny thing was that she ended up wearing a blue pastel suit along with a silvery watch. A sinful casual combination in her opinion. She leaned towards her as they walked hand in hand, “You always look so hot in suits.” “Shh. I’m concentrating.” She teased her, “On what? Are you nervous?” The adoption centre has sent them the child’s details yesterday and they went through it together. The moment the doctor had seen the three year old girl’s picture, she had instantly noticed how she fell in love at that right moment. Cassandra scoffed, checking out for creases in her suit, “Don’t be ridiculous. I never get nervous.” They walked through the door, towards the reception and the woman brightly smiled, standing up to walk around her desk and shake hands

78. Get-together

One year laterYork’s Family House“You little devil, you’re getting paint all over me!” April only laughed as she climbed on Selena’s laps, smudging blue paint on her cheek. She was sitting on the floor before a wall she had just starting painting. “I want a blue unicorn!”     Selena held her, looking towards Billy, grimacing, “Grandpa won’t like that on his fresh and beautiful white wall, right?” Selena cleared her voice, getting his attention, as she deliberately coughed, arching an eyebrow, “Right?!”      Billy glanced at them from the kitchen counter and laughed heartily, “Of course, my princess can paint a blue unicorn if she wants one.” April victoriously giggled at Selena, hugging her, “Can we paint one, mommy? Please?” Selena relented, selecting a smaller, more appropriate br

79. A Second Chance

“Ohoho. Don’t worry about that, princess. I kicked and beat the sh—” “Language, Meg!” Cassandra reprimanded as she stepped outside, catching a breath, relieved to see that April only wanted to greet the captain whom she was very fond of. Selena laughed, running barefoot on the grass towards her to hug her, “Megan! I missed you!”      Megan embraced her with her free arm, pressing a light kiss on her temple and huffed at the doctor, “See Cass? This is how you greet someone. Both of your girls know that.” Cassandra grimaced, rolling her eyes, “Oh shut up.” “Mama, can I be a cop too?”      She ruffled her hair in response, “Of course, you can when you grow up, sweetheart.” Megan mocked, teasing them, glancing over her shoulder towards the doctor’s parents, “Haha, hear that Billy? Not a doctor. Not an artis

80. Flower Girl

Cassandra looked at herself in the vertical mirror. The white suit she wore was tailor-made. A small blue flower was pinned below her shoulder. She instinctively moved a loose strand of her hair aside to not obstruct its sight. She exhaled slowly. Why was she getting so nervous? Was it alright to be this nervous?    She walked to one of the windows overlooking the garden of the manor they had rented and she tried to calm herself down. From where she was, she could see the guests were already seated in queued white chairs. The place was generously decorated with fabrics and flowers, leaving everything elegant.      It contrasted well with the greenery and white rose bushes. A bit further, she could see the pond where majestic swans were swimming. They would probably do some photoshoots there later. “Lovely creatures.” She muttered hoarsely under her breath, trying to distract herself.       Her
