Chapter 60

“Sh*t.”“Can I let them in already or not? It’s been five minutes,” Mia notes as though Olivia had not been counting the seconds since she received the mob boss’ texts.“I can’t escape from this, can I?” Olivia asks herself as she paces back and forth, ignoring her friend’s reply. “It’d be rude to tell them to leave now that they’ve come all the way down here, and you’ve raised me better than that.”“Exactly.” Without any further ado, Mia swings the door open at the same time Olivia’s head snaps to the entrance.“Hey! Sorry for the wait. Come in.” Mia’s smile is evident in her voice, her usual joy contagious ricocheting against Olivia’s apprehension.Steve is the first one to enter, followed by Paul, the two bearing wide smiles that Olivia mirrors, albeit more shakily and uncertain. Then, Olivia sees him, and her anxiety veers into an irritation that has Olivia stomping forward, brushing past the small group; Walter and Adam are absent. She halts at the door frame, glaring ahead at th

Chapter 61

A yell of her name grabs Olivia’s attention, and she turns her head toward the source, finding Paul, Steve, and Walter already in one car, Asher leaning on an arm on the driver’s side’s window to speak with his brother, while Adam is installed in the truck, ready to drive it away.“Sit with me, precious?” Walter says, and his girlfriend immediately takes up on the offer. As she opens the door, Walter comes out. “You’ll have to be in the middle since Olivia’s computer is on the other side,” he continues, Mia not missing the opportunity to plant a kiss on Walter’s lips.“As long as I’m next to you,” Mia smiles.“Alright, lovebirds, settle in,” Steve interjects and shares an eye roll with Olivia, the latter biting back her laugh.“Adam will make sure to take some detours along the way just in case someone is following us,” Asher says to Paul. “Make sure to stick close to us, so we don’t lose each other. I don’t think Henry and the other two are anywhere near, but….”“We’ll be careful,” P

Olivia frowns. “Them?”“Everyone else,” Asher answers and meets Olivia’s gaze. “Acting all scared and cautious around me. I didn’t expect that from you with how you’ve been in texts.”“Speaking to someone through text and face to face are two different environments for me, apparently. Or when it comes to you. Or both.” Olivia says, and she wants to explain further, share more of her insecurities, but her mouth is sewed close by them.“That I’m realizing.”There’s something in the way Asher says this, too quiet and drained, unfitting for the man; or perhaps it’s in the way his tensed fist and stance loosens, however not in a relaxing manner, but rather a surrendering one.“It’s not your fault you’re—” Olivia starts but doesn’t know how to finish, not when she hurries the sentence out to keep Asher here, ensuring that the boss doesn’t leave her alone. “You’re a little… A little intimidating.” Among other things, Olivia refuses to approach.“I’m just me,” Asher says, and it sounds so fru

‘Ashy’ says naught, motionless from where he’s sitting, and Olivia’s selfishness becomes a little more eager, evolving into her laying her head on Asher’s shoulder, that sense of comfort and security back between them.Olivia surveys the expanse of Asher’s throat, the black hair at the base of the scalp, and she then detects a small scar on the side of the neck, one that looks somewhat new.“Where did you get that wound on your neck?” Olivia asks, her voice barely above a whisper.“Valentine’s fight.” Asher rasps.Olivia watches Asher lift a hand, the limb disappearing from Olivia’s vision, and when it does not come back down, she raises her head, reclining to peer at Asher.Asher’s palm is covering the lower part of his face. His features scrunched into a scowl, and the eyebrows furrowed so deeply that Olivia worries for a moment, even more, when she notices the redness overtaking Asher’s skin.Olivia checks the windscreen, thinking that perhaps the boss was struck by some sunburn, b

Flashback... Violence, Blood, Knife, Injury * * * * * * * * * * * “One last thing,” Asher says and waits for the door to close to swiftly move around Henry, seize his collar, and trip the man to his knees. Caden and William both step forward at the same time, wanting to intervene, but Asher promptly grabs his gun tucked at the back of his pants, and he aims it at William’s head, Henry’s friends immediately freezing. “You two walk four steps forward,” he says with a jerk of his gun, William and Caden doing as asked before halting. “Any limb you may move from now onward will be shot along with a second one to serve as a lesson. Perhaps a third as a belated retribution.” Henry struggles in Asher’s hold, and Asher lets him go, for a fleeting moment of false grace, before he snatches the dark locks as Henry tries to stand. Then, in a gruesome burst of cracking sounds that resonates through Asher’s eardrums and swells at that simmering bubble of — perhaps unreasonable — vindication, h

Chapter 65

An hour later, everyone showered and dressed in more comfortable and clean clothes. The group is loitering on the mattresses, forming a circle around the pile of food, plates, and bowls filling the core as they devour their dinner. On Olivia’s left is Steve, who seems to want to be around her as much as he does, and Olivia is happy. Next to Steve is Paul, then Mia, Walter, and finally Adam. Asher is settled on Olivia’s right, a foot and a half between them to accommodate everyone and have enough space to fit them all, a feat that Olivia both appreciates and despises. While Olivia’s apprehension considerably lessened to a point where she temporarily forgot of its existence, it is still there, and she’s reminded of it by the extended proximity since they sat down to eat, her and Asher the closest they have been so far minus watching The Vampire Diaries episode that Olivia wisely chooses to omit until a later day where she can yell about it. Chapter 66

Asher’s left arm is resting atop the couch in its whole length, and if Olivia were to scoot two or three foot toward him, then reclines against the couch, and then, god forbid, bends her head backward, her skin would come into contact with Asher’s hand. It’s an important amount of elements that must happen together for it to happen, but the possibility is there and suffices to send Olivia into a spiral of want and move and want want want.“We are not having a literal d*ck measurement contest,” Asher says, his right hand bringing the glass of cola to his lips as he takes a sip.How is Olivia aware of that?Because she’s watching Asher like a hawk, creep, and she snaps herself out of it.“Don’t be such a sourpuss, Asher. This is Adam’s job,” Steve says and is dragged back down by Paul. “Unless you’re self-conscious about your own size?”“I’m well endowed enough not to be self-conscious about anything, plus there’s nothing wrong about being small,” Asher quips, and, really, the conversat

Olivia is concentrating on her task while she takes the ice cube tray, popping out three cubes for each glass, and she even counts them out loud, albeit hushed, but it eases her mind out of that fogginess. She lumbers to the living room, sits on her knees in front of the mattress, and says to Adam, “Can you pass me the coke?”Adam glares at her, but Olivia is not bothered by the scorn for once, feeling curiously untouchable. “Give it to me,” Olivia insists, Adam relenting as he tosses the bottle her way.Olivia is careful when she serves herself and Asher the drink, as she was earlier with the ice cubes, perhaps too much, even, because two feet stop to her right along with a voice belonging to Asher.“As if. I never lose at Uno.”“That’s because you cheat too, Asher,” Adam retorts.“I don’t cheat,” Asher snips. “I’m that good.”“Sure thing,” Adam smiles and shakes his head, an event Olivia would be more amazed by if Asher had not taken her attention away with a single tap on her head.

It’s sudden and unexpected, taking everyone in the room by surprise. The sound is higher than what Olivia would have anticipated, yet still laced with a velvety low that Olivia has come to associate with Asher’s voice, even more as the mob boss bursts into laughter at Olivia’s jab.“Look at the damn cards, brat,” Asher says, and he’s still smiling, Olivia’s own lips reflecting it.“Fine, fine,” Olivia begins, and she’s about to add more when she notes the stretched silence in the room. She scans the living room, the others bewildered, and Olivia doesn’t really understand the dramatics because aside from herself and Mia, it can’t be the first time Asher’s friends hear him laugh.Asher notices it too, his mouth pressing into a thin line as he glares at the others. “I just laughed. Stop behaving and looking at me like I f*cking massacred someone,” he says, and his timber has an edge of discomfort that grows to an annoyance when his brother speaks.“It’s been a while since we’ve heard you

Chapter 69

“They are so… Oh Olivia, this is… Marvelous.” Asher trails off, and his thumbs brush the footpad on Olivia’s paw, rubbing circles there before pressing, the retractable claws peeking out.“Even your claws are—” Asher forgoes the middle pad to maintain the paw up with one hand, using the index of his second one to poke at the four pads at the top. “They’re so pink….”“Asking again what the hell is wrong with Asher.” Adam reiterates, this time, his inquiry answered by Walter.“He loves dogs and is kinda obsessed with them, but in a good way, as you can see, and Olivia partially looks like a cute little dog,” Walter says.“How come you know and I don’t?” Adam stresses, miffed.“Well it—”“It’s so cute and small,” Asher whispers, still busying himself with fondling Olivia’s paw, kneading at the pads before scratching at the fur in between them. “I knew your fur would be soft. It looked so soft and silky.”“Her paw is the size of your head almost. How is that small?” Steve says.Asher’s ev
