Chapter 61: Piper

An hour passes with not a word from a single hospital staff. I worry his vitals aren't being monitored; no one has even looked in our direction except for the bum who asked me for a cigarette. "I'll be right back. I'm going to find someone to tell us what's going on. This is crazy.""I'll be right here." Smartass.Finding the check-in station proved more difficult with the construction underway but once there, the woman acts as if I have three heads and am breathing fire."I'm sorry, ma'am, what did you say the name is?""Cooper. Moby Cooper.""I don't have anyone registered by that name.""We were brought here by ambulance from Greenville. My husband is on a gurney over by the dead guy." None of this is amusing. She doesn't even blink at my referral to a dead patient hanging out in the hall."I don't know what to tell you.""Are you kidding me with this? I just followed an ambulance for over three hours. They gave me this pack of information to give to a nurse after

Chapter 62: Moby

I think I'm in hell. The people around me are moaning, some in agony, with no relief in sight. I imagine this is what Hades would be like. This is unlike anything I've ever seen before, even on television, busy emergency rooms should have abundant lighting, state of the art facilities. This is nothing like that. The halls are dim, the noise is deafening, from both the patients and the construction, and everything appears dirty. Being alone, unable to walk, these halls freak me the fuck out almost as much as the people filling them. With Piper in view, I can tell by the look on her face things are not going as planned. Her skin is a purplish red, her eyes slightly squinted, and a vein is bulging in her forehead. Someone has pissed my wife off, and I'm thankful it wasn't me. When we make eye contact, all signs of irritation wipe clean, her face softens, the color begins to return to normal, and her eyes fill with love. There's only a slight trace of the vein that gives her away. When

Chapter 63: Piper

The room is small, with no furniture for visitors, but Moby's away from the creeps downstairs and will now have the proper medical attention. I can't ask for more right now. The light is fading from the window and it's nearing eight o'clock. When his parents find us, I'm rather confused by Patty. She tells us about her plans for the week to shop, soak up the sun, and essentially enjoy an unexpected vacation. I look at Brooks who shrugs not knowing what's going on with her either and seemingly as surprised as I am at her focus not being on Moby. Maybe this is her way of saying, if he doesn't need her because he has me, then so be it. She will do what she wants. I roll my eyes, silently communicating the absurdity of it all with Brooks. They make their exit with Brooks in tow, confident Moby is now in good hands to retreat to the comfort of their respective hotel rooms. None of them ask me what my plans are for the night, and I certainly don't want to worry Moby, so I make no mentio

Chapter 64: Piper

"May I speak to Piper?" I hear when I answer my phone."This is she." I don't recognize the voice on the other end, nor the number on the caller ID."This is Renee. I work with Moby except I'm at the Greer facility. I don't think we've ever formally been introduced." "Hi, Renee. Moby's mentioned you before. He thought I should get together with you to work on kickboxing." I'm an idiot; this girl isn't calling to hear about Moby's work out ideas for me. "I'm sorry. What can I do for you, Renee?""I hate calling so early in the morning, but I'm a couple hours from Charleston and was hoping I could meet you. I won't take but a minute of your time. I have a seminar I have to be at before noon.""Is everything okay?""Absolutely, just want to give you a card for Moby from the guys at the gym."It warms my heart to know they thought enough to get him a card. I realize she was already coming, but men just don't think about these things. I know it's going to do wonders for Moby'

Chapter 65: Piper

Returning to Moby's room, it's after eight o'clock and he's nowhere around. A nurse informs me he moved to another room down the hall. Pointing me in the direction, I find him propped up in bed, eating what the hospital might describe as breakfast, watching television."Hey, babe," he calls out in much better spirits than I've seen him in the last couple of days."Hey! They gave you food. That's great.""I don't know if you can call soup for breakfast food, but it's not coming through an IV so I'll take what I can get." I look at the liquid cautiously. "They're still afraid I'm going to choke, so we're starting with liquids. I was told there's noodles in here too but someone lied.""Did you sleep well?" I inquire, hoping he had a better night than I did."I'm not sure you can call it sleep so much as napping since there's a nurse in here every hour checking my vitals. Every time the blood pressure cuff inflates it wakes me up. But I did the best I could with what I had. What

Chapter 66: Piper

When Renee texts me, I jump up to make sure I don't look as bad as I feel in the bathroom mirror. Sadly, it's worse than expected. Not having showered since yesterday morning, very little food, and a sob fest has me looking like a total disaster. I inform Moby I'll be right back but his parents and Brooks are walking in the door, so I don't worry about him missing my presence. I race down to the first floor, stepping onto the sidewalk in front of the hospital. Renee pulls up in her yellow Volkswagen Bug grinning from ear to ear. She rolls down her window and calls my name in question. I confirm walking toward her. She leans out of the car to hug my neck. I'm not much of a hugger, but this girl is infectious. She's young, cute as hell, and obviously a naturally happy person. I see why Moby thought I would like working with her."I hate to have to run off so fast, but maybe I can stop back by before I go home on Sunday. Do you think you guys will still be here?""I hope not, bu

Chapter 67: Moby

"Now, Moby, before you get yourself worked up into a tizzy, this is all a misunderstanding." My mom has no clue. She is sorely mistaken if she thinks she's going to manipulate her way out of this one."What were you thinking?" I snarl in my parents' direction."Son, calm down." My dad will forever defend that woman. It doesn't matter if she's right or wrong he's going down with her. He would have ridden the Titanic to the bottom of the ocean with her. Maybe that's why their attitude toward Piper surprises me so much."Don't tell me to calm down, Dad. You would be irate if one of us let mom sleep in her car." I hear the beeping on the machine monitoring my blood pressure, and I know my pulse is rising, but I can't stop the anger."Why didn't Piper speak up?" "I don't know, Mom. Maybe she didn't feel like she could when you basically threatened to leave her behind yesterday. Or maybe her only priority was me and not her fucking swimsuit or her impromptu vacation." I hope the w

Chapter 68: Moby

They both take seats in my room, making small talk, asking about my night, what the doctor plans for today. Not long after I tell them I'm waiting on an MRI, the nurse comes in to give me the contrast dye. She'll be back in a bit to take me for the actual test but before she goes she plants a needle in the skin of my stomach, just below my belly button. Morning and night. Two shots of Heparin a day and they hurt like a son of a bitch. I already have bruises marking my lower abdomen from previous injections. I wince but say nothing. She's better than the others have been. As soon as she pulls the needle out, she rubs small circles over the injection."It helps a little if you massage the spot. I know they suck. Sorry." She's young and cute-she obviously works out. Her arms are lean like a runner. I imagine she's just out of nursing school. "I'm Alyssa." She extends her hand in greeting when she finishes rubbing the soreness away."Moby. Nice to meet you.""I have to admit, I was s

Chapter 69: Piper

Before the doctors even start to speak, I get the feeling this is the day of reckoning, as if today, we find out what the rest of our lives will hold. Every free minute I've had I've been on my phone reading what I can about strokes-what to expect after, the intense therapy, the long-term effects. It's a lot. I'm preparing myself for it, but I don't think Moby has any idea. I haven't had the heart to tell him he isn't just going to wake up next week and be able to walk and have use of his arm and hand again. His speech is getting better each day, but it all takes time and work.Dr. Ryan speaks for the group. "You've had a stroke, we already knew that, but we didn't know why, and I still can't say with one hundred percent certainty, but we have a pretty good idea." She erases the whiteboard in the room, taking a marker in hand, she starts drawing what appears to be a neck and brain. The squeaking of the dry erase marker is eerie in the quiet of the room. "There are two major blood

Chapter 70: Piper

When Moby's parents return from some fancy lunch in Mt. Pleasant, he fills them in on the events of the day. His mom seems disappointed they won't be doing the stent but instead of questioning it, I ignore her. She pulls me aside to apologize for her oversight the night before and had I not known Moby coerced her it might have felt genuine. Nate on the other hand, his apology feels heartfelt. As the atonement is wrapping up, the cavalry arrives. This room seemed large when we first arrived but slowly adding the Wrights, the Coopers, and my Fish dwarfs it. My parents won't be far behind, but they had to wait until the business closed to make the drive."What's the word, Mo?" Joey pushes his way to the front of the group. I'm surprised we haven't heard more from him while we've been gone but should count my blessings he's been all right. I was worried he'd never leave Moby's side.I listen from the corner of the room as Moby offers what there is to tell which isn't much. It's weir
