31. Late Night Conversations

My eyes opened suddenly, like someone or something had disrupted my sleep. I looked around, my eyes adjusting slowly to the darkness as I sat there, hoping to confirm my suspicions. I was disappointed when I realized I was all alone in the room. I looked around one more time, just to make certain I didn’t miss anything the first time.Gwaine had been here earlier, he probably left while I was asleep. I remember he asked me to sleep and I stubbornly laid here, fighting to keep my eyes open until I couldn’t. I smiled, wondering if he had noticed.I shut my eyes, willing myself to go back to sleep. I laid there, my blanket dragged all the way up as I tossed and turned uncomfortably, looking for whatever sleeping position would help me sleep faster. The ache I had all over my body was still present, I couldn’t tell if it was better or worse than it was earlier. I rested my elbows on the bed, used it to push myself into a sitting position. A sharp pain in my head stabbed me suddenly, makin

32. Morning Shenanigans

32I came awake slowly to the sound of running water. The ache in my head was barely noticeable now. There was a different but familiar scent around me. I was definitely not in some place I’m used to being. The bed felt different; it was softer and more spacious. I opened my eyes, coming face to face with the unfamiliar surrounding. After a few seconds, it all started to make sense. This was Gwaine’s room and the scent lingering in the air was that intoxicating unique scent of his. I looked round, hoping to find him perched in a corner, watching me like he usually does, but he wasn’t here. The events of the previous night came flooding back into my memory and a smile graced my lips as I remembered. We had had the longest conversation last night and this time, we talked almost as friends. I remember resting my aching head on his shoulder to see his reaction . When he adjusted his body to accommodate me, I leaned in more comfortably and eventually drifted to sleep. He probably broug

33. Bad News

33Gwaine’s POV:“You really want to know?” she asked, her smile widening suspiciously. She seemed to be enjoying whatever this was. My expression darkened, projecting the emotion I felt within.“On second thought, I don’t think I want to.” I replied, dismissing my budding curiosity. She laughed, a loud feminine cackle that wasn’t all that pleasing to the ears. I managed a smile in her direction. I sat there, watching her as she ate with so much enthusiasm. She stuffed food into her mouth quickly, taking big bites of everything. She seemed to be enjoying every bite of the meal. She raised her head, locking eyes with me momentarily before her facial expression changed.“What?” she struggled to ask, her mouth stuffed with food. I fought the urge to laugh as I watched her. There was something, a morsel of food sitting at the corner of her lips.I leaned in, “Steady.” I said, urging her to keep still before I proceeded. Using my napkin, I wiped it. My finger brushed lightly against her

34. Words Of Advice

Gwaine’s POV:Regan nodded at my instruction and started heading for the door immediately. “And Regan,“ I called out and he paused, turning back, “I want him alive. Bring him in as a prisoner and make sure to keep him locked up in my dungeon.” I added.“Will do.” He said, walking out in two long strides, closing the door behind him. I listened to his footsteps until the sound faded.Taking one necessary gulp of whiskey, I leaned back on the chair. At this point, Vilkus had completely taken over my body and emotions. I did nothing to fight him off, I just poured more whiskey into my now empty cup and settled back into the sit I recently vacated. I sat alone for a while, giving myself all the time I needed to cool off. When I was certain I was okay, I headed to my room. In the hall way, I noticed the door to Catherine’s room was slightly ajar. I stopped at the entrance and peaked inside. She was sitting by the window, book and pen in hand, clearly lost in whatever art she was creating

35: Torture

Gwaine’s POV:I walked downstairs and was greeted by the sound of Regan’s voice. He wasn’t alone, there were two other men I assume are a part of the border patrol. I met Nicole at the bottom of the stairs, she seemed to be headed upstairs. “ I was just coming up to call you Sir, you have company.” She said, lowering her head.“Alright, thank you.” She turned immediately and was about to disappear before I called her again.“Nicole?”She paused, turned and hurried towards where I stood. “Yes, Sir?”“I noticed the fresh paint you used to cover the blood trail in the hallway, that was thoughtful.” I said, suddenly unsure of how to thank or compliment her.“Thank you Sir, just doing my job.” She replied right before I dismissed her. The men were seated but immediately I entered the room, they were all up on their feet. I motioned for them to be seated before settling in one of the chairs. “The prisoner you requested is in your dungeon as we speak, what would you have us do to him

36. Blood And Bubbles

35I watched him leave, not looking behind and closing the door behind him. I sighed when I was alone. One look at the drawing and he recognized it, I could tell from how he stared at it; sparkles of recognition in his eyes. He had stared at the sketch long and hard, completely oblivious to the fact that I was watching him. When I thought he was done, he had surprised me by asking if he could keep it, a request I still find odd.I looked at the pair of eyes that sat in the middle of the book, they were beautiful. A tiny part of me hurt at the realization that this almost masterpiece would end up with Gwaine. I added gold circles to the iris to represent Vilkus’s presence within him. I thought about how far we’ve come over these few weeks. He went from being my master and torturer to a friend. Well, maybe I considered him more than a friend but that truth belongs in my head.Once I was done making a few necessary additions to the drawing, I headed out. I stopped at the door to his ro

37. Sharing A Bed

Apart from his intimidating size, Gwaine has really bold features that make him appear threatening. As I stood there, watching this man, I wondered if he really meant what he had said.As tempting as his offer is, I wondered if it was appropriate, especially since he was my Alpha and our rooms were almost adjacent.“Gwaine…” I started to say before he interrupted me, again.“Please, Catherine.”There was something about the way he said my name, an intoxicating sound that made me want to ask him to please, say it again.“Alright then.” I said, turning to undress. He held my hand, preventing me from leaving the room.“Let me help you.” He said, his hand already at the edge of my shirt. He tugged lightly, as if asking me if he should go ahead. I nodded, urging him to go on. He unbuttoned my shirt slowly, his eyes fixed intently on mine. I struggled to hold his gaze as his fingers occasionally brushing my bare skin was enough distraction. He opened my shirt and slowly pulled it down my ar

38. The Day After

When I woke up in the morning, I was sore but in a good way. There was a lazy smile plastered on my face as I remembered the activities of the previous night. Gwaine had cuddled me to sleep, his arms wrapped around me protectively for as long as I could remember. I turned to kiss my lover good morning. His side of the bed was cold and empty; he wasn’t there. I held my breath and listened for any sound in the room but there was nothing, everywhere was silent. I searched the darkness for any movement but there was nothing still.“Gwaine?” I called out, leaving the bed and heading towards the bathroom, all the while hoping he was in there. There was no response and except from the sounds I was making, the room was quiet. My sight blurred as tears formed in them. I placed my hands over my mouth in a crude attempt at keeping myself from crying.I looked about the room expectantly, hoping to see a note or anything handwritten to tell me where he had gone. There was nothing. Picking up what

39. A Night On The Cliff

I walked slowly down the stairs, conscious of the fact that Gwaine’s gaze was fixed on me. He watched me in awe, like he hadn’t seen anyone look that good. I got to the bottom of the stairs and placed my hand in his outstretched arm.“You look beautiful, Catherine.” He said, helping me down the last of the stairs.“Thank you.” I replied, flashing a smile in his direction. He turned and walked towards the door.“Where are we going?” I asked him he paused, looking at me like he hadn’t thought of that question until I mentioned it just now.“ I don’t have anywhere in mind” he said, stroking my arm before he continued, “let’s just see how it goes.” I laughed, covering my mouth with my hand.“You got me a dress so we could see how it goes?” I asked, ending my sentence with an accent I hoped was his. He smiled at my fake attempt to mimic him.“Let’s go for a stroll then.” He said, taking my hand and leading the way. From the corner of my eyes, I spotted Nicole and Beatrice, one of the maids

40. HeartBeat

The walk back was quiet, neither of us spoke. It was the kind of peaceful silence you shared with close friends, the kind you didn’t need words to speak because you’re certain they already know the contents of your heart. He held my hands as we walked, occasionally rubbing his thumb over my hand. I made it my duty to step on every dry leaf on my path because the crunchy sound brought me an odd sense of relief. Gwaine stole glances at me, smiling at my level of childishness. The cold wind made me shiver a little and although I tried to hide my discomfort, Gwaine was quick to notice.“Are you cold?” He asked, his eyes finding mine in the dark. I nodded in acknowledgment and he removed his jacked and placed it over my shoulders. His scent was all over that piece of clothing and I pulled it closer, inhaling deeply as a smile formed at the corner of my lips.“Thank you.” I said. He nodded, picking my hand and placing it back in his. We were almost home when my feet suddenly started hurting
