Chapter 91: Lore Master

The part Rhychard enjoyed most about Common Grounds, besides being right down the street from his condo, was that it was a coffee house, not a coffee shop—one of those mass-produced chain shops that tended to pop up on every corner, in every shopping mall, and now even resided within one of the major tourist traps in Orlando. He didn't want to be part of a worldwide experience. He wanted that mom and pop flavor that came from local businesses. He wanted a soft couch and rustic tables, not hard plastic furniture that didn't welcome people staying and borrowing the free Wi-Fi. Harbor City wasn't a big town, and he didn't care for the big chains coming in and trying to take over his community. He wanted the town to stay small.Of course, without even realizing it, Harbor City had grown in leaps and bounds without anyone else moving in due to the fact he now knew about the Land Under. The faerie now filled his world, as well as humans, and to make it worse, the faerie seemed to be everywhe

Chapter 92: Lore Master

Karl's eyes were wide as he stared at Famallumi, and all Rhychard wanted to do was smack the elf. "Then it's true?" Karl asked. He jerked his gaze to Rhychard. "This Bertram guy was telling the truth about you?""He answers the question, and you think I'm the one Bertram is talking about? The fact he just told you I was talking to Kree went right past you?" Rhychard rolled his eyes. Still, he knew he would have to come clean with Karl, but Common Grounds was not the place for an identity reveal. "Wait," Rhychard said, turning his attention back to his brother. "Why were you even with this guy?""It's not like I had a choice. Some grayish-looking dudes with pointy ears grabbed me and forced me to go with them to his penthouse in that building by the Bottoms that's not even completed yet. That's where I saw Alana eat that kid and where her brother told me all about you and how you're in the way of what he wants. Apparently, the people who killed Briggs were supposed to kill me as a warni

Chapter 93: Lore Master

A roar ripped the night, and they watched as four gargoyles slaughtered the coshey, slicing the magical elven hound open and leaving him to die. Karl made as if to move, but then he must have realized it was all a vision and froze in place, his mouth open in horror and disgust.Jamairlo fell against the brick wall, his body bleeding in dozens of places, the sword slipping in his blood-drenched hand. Then they watched as Rhychard rounded the corner of the small twenty-five-dollar-a-plate bistros at the end of the strip, leaving the quietness of downtown and entering hell. Quite well did Rhychard remember that night and the horror that lay before him as he stared and gawked at what he thought were giant bats attacking some actor from a reenactment of Lord of the Rings. The blond elf knelt on one knee, trying to hold himself steady with a hand on the brick wall. His other hand held the sword he used to keep the creatures at bay, although a futile attempt.Beside him, Rhychard heard Karl g

Chapter 94: Lore Master

"Warrior!" Famallumi raced to where Rhychard lay sprawled on the grimy road as Karl dropped down to one knee beside his brother. Yet, although Rhychard could hear them moving, he couldn't see them. All he saw was the burning grass around him, the sizzling of the night air…Night air? It wasn't even lunch, yet. Rhychard opened his mouth to scream at the others, but the searing heat rushed between his lips and down his throat, singeing his taste buds and nerve-endings. He couldn't scream without sucking in the flames and heat. "Rhychard, it's not real. You have to fight it." It was Renny's voice again, but how? He forced his eyes open, searching. And there she stood, staring at him with pleading eyes. "You have to push past it. Ignore what you think you're feeling and what your mind is telling you is happening. It's not real.""Warrior, what ails you? What is it you see?" Famallumi's voice reached him, along with the cries for vengeance from people he couldn't see. They screamed for his

Chapter 95: Lore Master

Famallumi glanced back up at the Warrior. "The Warrior, Mephalus, allowed the power and magic of the sword to usurp his will. He became greedy and hungry for more power and thus corrupt. He set out to conquer an Irish water town, subjugating its citizens. In the end, the Sidhe Warrior Masters united to destroy him before he overthrew the town. Mephalus died in a massive fire that consumed him, a fire caused by the very townspeople he tried to conquer."Rhychard shook his head. "But if he's dead, how is he able to come after me?""Warrior, you know already the answer to this. When a Warrior dies, his soul transfers into the Guardian Sword, so his knowledge and battle experience can be used to aid the next Warrior. Mephalus resides within your sword. He tries to use the connection between the sword and yourself to free his soul into yours.""Your life is weirder than I thought," Karl said, standing to his feet, hands on his hips.Rhychard spared him a glance. "More than you know." Turnin

Chapter 96: Lore Master

Karl left them as soon as the show was over, not surprising. Rhychard was too exhausted to even care. He wanted to get back to his condo and talk to Tryna. He had a brief conversation with Kree to let him know his family was safe and the elves guarding them would be on the lookout for all forms of danger, not just from the Void. Rhychard wanted to say he was relieved, but he had grown to realize the faerie world could be fickle at the best of times. He didn't want to think of the worst of times.Once they were home, Kree used his magic to heal the sword cut under Rhychard's right eye. It was already too late for the wound to be healed completely, so it left a jagged scar down the Warrior's cheek. He stared at it in his bathroom mirror, pulling at his face in different directions to make it look less noticeable. It didn't work. A scar was a scar."It doesn't look too bad," Renny said as she leaned back on the bathroom door.He glanced over at her, a frown pulling his cheek down and stre

Chapter 97: Lore Master

The afternoon sun beat down on him as he left his condo, the wind, which would have normally cooled him off, completely absent. He made his way from the alcove of his front door to the woods behind his home, needing an escape. He just wanted peace and quiet in order to think through what was happening with the visions and Mephalus. It wasn't his to have, however. Logan saw him, as the groundskeeper mulched around some hedges, and called out to Rhychard, dropping his gardening tools as he sprinted from his spot, crossing the parking lot toward Rhychard. Rhychard groaned as he slowed his pace. He had forgotten all about Logan and whoever trimmed the area by the creek. "Rhychard, Rhychard, have you talked to the people yet, the ones who don't tell me about cutting the woods?"Rhychard took a deep breath. "No, Logan, I haven't had a chance yet." Then he paused as he glanced toward the complex's office. "You know what? Let's just go talk to them now, shall we?""Me?" Logan suddenly looked l

Chapter 98: Lore Master

Buttercup stood outside The Murky Cauldron, staring at the glass door as she debated within herself as to whether she really wanted to go inside or not. While it was nice to be able to tell Tansy all about everything she went through since working for Adrian Michaels, the whole idea of witches scared her. She had enough craziness in her life right now; she really shouldn't be adding more.Yet, with everything she witnessed, she felt like she needed some advantage over the evildoers. Never again would she be a victim. Plus, it would be nice to put a spell on Karl Bartlett. Maybe she'd turn him into a toad. Nah, too cliché. Not a rat, either. Has to be something really nasty. As she daydreamed about what she would transform Karl into, she reached for the door handle of The Murky Cauldron, her mind already made up without her even realizing she had decided. The little bell jingled over her head, and she surrendered to what her subconscious obviously wanted. She stood in the doorway, took

Buttercup clutched at her chest; her eyes wide with the bluntness of Jayden's words. "What? How? When?""What do you care? You left us, remember? Walked out on your family."More tears poured from Buttercup's eyes as she dropped her gaze to the floor, her arms now over her chest trying to hold her insides intact. On the verge of collapsing, she could feel her knees shaking as the room started to spin. Her father. Dead. And, Jayden was right; Buttercup hadn't known. To be honest, she hadn't even thought about them since Jerome forced her into prostitution. It hurt too bad to remember what life was like before Jerome and, to avoid that agony, she shoved it from her mind. She took a stuttering breath. She needed to leave, to get out of there before she had a meltdown.Tansy must have sensed what Buttercup was feeling because she moved over to her, putting her arms around Buttercup and giving her a squeeze in an attempt to offer her some comfort. "While I don't know all the history here, I

Chapter 100: Lore Master

"It sounds like a pretty sucky night," Rhychard said as he snatched at the last piece of bacon on the plate before Famallumi could get it. The elf's appetite seemed insatiable, and Rhychard worried about whether Famallumi would eat him out of house and home. The Warrior glanced over at Buttercup as she stirred her scrambled eggs on her plate, toying with them more than eating them. The elf ate everything in sight, while Buttercup barely touched a thing. Maybe it'll balance out in the end. "I'm sorry your sister treated you that way. You don't deserve it. It was also a pretty shitty way to tell you about your father. I hadn't realized you left home eight years ago." He settled his gaze on her as he took another bite of bacon. "I've never asked you about your family or where you came from. I'm sorry. I just…well…I guess I just never knew how to ask you about your life before we met."Buttercup shrugged, her gaze still on the plate Rhychard knew she didn't see. "I don't blame you. I would
