Chapter 71

On four feet he chased the scent. Sweet. Exotic. It promised so many things. Fun things. Naked and sweaty things. Chris never quite got a glimpse of the one he followed, but she also did nothing to hide her trail. The minx! She wanted him to catch her. Taunted his canine side to hunt her feline one. Eager to end the teasing pursuit, he quickened his pace, leaping through the foliage, taking care to move as soundlessly as possible through the fallen leaves. He didn't quite succeed, the crinkle of his passage loud in the still night. She moved much more quietly, slinking and springing with a grace only cats could manage, the signs of her passage seen only in the tremble of branches and the foliage that still clung stubbornly to almost barren branches. Even without the faint physical evidence, he would have tracked her by scent alone. Despite the incongruity of a wolf lusting after a feline, her delectable aroma called him. Trotting out into a clearing, a very emp

Chapter 72

Nervous, Jiao took more time getting ready than usual. She and Sheng shared the same weekday off. Unusual given they both worked at different places, she at a childcare center, and he at a car dealership. She still couldn't believe she'd convinced Sheng to call Chris and apologize, although, the concession only comprised part of the battle. Sheng still insisted that only the best quote would win. How crazy was it for her to cross her fingers and hope Chris came in first? Thankfully, Sheng didn't notice anything amiss, accepting at face value when questioned on her jumpiness that she was excited to finally see the gym plan moving forward. Although Jiao expected it, the ringing of the doorbell still took her by surprise. Having hovered nearby on ridiculous pretexts, like dusting the spotless living room, organizing the front hall closet, washing light switches, she made sure she stayed close, wanting to see Chris for a moment alone before Sheng stepped in. Lucky for her, when

Chapter 73

Bad as it made him, Chris wanted to ditch the serious Asian dude and follow the hot female. Wrong move. He knew that. Doubly wrong, given she was already freakn' married, but dammit, having gotten a second whiff and then a brief touch, everything in him clamored ? and howled ? for him to hunt her down and make her his. The whining of his wolf in his head wasn't necessary for him to know for a fact she belonged with him. Ours. His wolf seemed happy he'd finally gotten the memo. Finding his mate should have resulted in a celebratory moment, a naked sweaty moment, but somehow he didn't think her husband would approve, and Chris couldn't blame him. He wouldn't want to share her either. The possessive sort, Chris didn't want anyone touching his woman. Of course, that might be hard to enforce, given her husband had more rights than him. Damn. Surely destiny wasn't so cruel as to make him yearn for a woman already claimed? He didn't want to get involved in a polyamorous mat

Sheng did not look happy when he stalked into the kitchen. "Was his quote that horrible?" Jiao asked as she dropped the chicken into the pan. It sizzled in the melted butter. "No idea. He's going to email it to me later." "If it's not the price, then why do you look like you swallowed a lemon?" "There's something about him I don't like." "You don't like anyone," she retorted flipping the chicken she precooked for the casserole so it could brown on the other side. "I'm just being careful. I won't do anything to jeopardize us." "And how is a handyman going to manage that? Or do you think everyone works for Kaleb?" The man who'd held them captive from a young age. Their parents too, until they died. For a long time she and Sheng believed he ran the world, and he did in a sense, the compound in the mountains its own world outside reality. "I am not paranoid. Just cautious." "No, you're paranoid. Not quite tin hat crazy, but close. But

Chapter 75

Chris bounded into his house with only one goal in mind. Winning. Consumed with thoughts of the woman he'd met, he whipped up a quote, then worked the numbers, massaging them into something only an idiot could refuse. Given Jack's mental deficiencies, he then worked it some more, just to be sure. Intent on his task, he ignored the pokes from his brother Stu, cajoling him to come outside and toss a pigskin. He ignored his bellowing father demanding to know who made the great big mess in the living room. Chris had, but as he was busy, he didn't take the blame and instead pointed outside to his brother bouncing a ball off the house. The ensuing outdoor shouting match reached wicked decibel levels. Those distractions he ignored, but he moved his ass quick as a pup on the trail of prey when his mother quietly asked for a set of hands to help dry the dishes. Only a stupid wolf got on his mama's bad side. Five foot nothing, she looked sweet on the outside, but she ruled the roost

Chapter 76

Several days later, Sheng balled up yet another quote and tossed it at the garbage can. Six contractors other than the wolf he'd had in. Five gave him exorbitantly high quotes, much higher than expected, and one didn't contact him back at all. He expected it from the humans, damned crooked thieves looking to make a heap of money, but the second and third shifter he called for numbers came in even higher. Only one quote shone amidst the rest. One problem. He didn't like the wolf behind it. The moment he met Chris, Sheng smelled trouble. He'd not missed how his sister and Chris looked at each other with moonstruck eyes. Talk about a complication he didn't want or need. He knew Jiao thought them safe, his fault really because he'd done his job as protector too well. Sheng and Patricia, the RCMP shifter with connections who'd helped them disappear when they escaped the mountains, had helped him hide the evidence of Kaleb's continued interest in their whereabouts. She note

Chapter 77

Jiao left her brother with her heart heavy with sorrow and, at the same time, bursting with joy. On the one hand, Jiao would get to explore the feelings Chris evoked. Discover if he was her mate as she suspected. Indulge in things she'd yet to experience like flirting and maybe even a kiss. But, on the other hand, Jiao hated going against her brother's wishes. Sure Jiao didn't reply when Sheng asked her for a promise to stay away, didn't lie to Sheng's face, but only because she knew she couldn't stop herself from finding out more about this Chris. From seeing him. Touching him. Hugging her brother's stiff body, Jiao bit her lip at the realization Sheng already guessed her plan. How she wished she could find her brother a mate of his own so he'd agree once and for all to drop the charade. Or, if that proved impossible, at least help him get laid so he'd lose some of his uptight attitude. Some relationship doctor on a late night show claimed sex cured everything. It w

Chapter 78

Chris got the phone call late in the afternoon telling him he got the job and to show up the next day at nine a.m. Letting out a whoop of victory, Chris grabbed his mother and swung her around. Sighing, she tsked him when he set her on her feet. "Calm down. What did I tell you about taking it easy? And what happened to showing a girl a good time first before chasing after the married one?" "You want me to cheat on my mate?" He drew himself up with an indignant huff. "You're sure she's your mate?" "Absolutely. I can't stop thinking about her, ma. It's all I can do to stop myself from marching over there and claiming her." "My baby boy is in lust." "Love." "It's too soon to call it that," his mother admonished. "You don't even know this girl. She could be a right bitch for all you know. Just because fate wants to tie you together doesn't mean it's a match made in heaven." "Pessimist." Her words of caution couldn't penetrate his bubble of ex

Chapter 79

Jack let Chris into the house when he returned the Friday before Thanksgiving. Not catching sight of Jill, Chris couldn't help asking, "Where's the wife?" "Work. You won't be running into her much. I got a key made for you. I want you to restrict your work hours to between nine and four thirty when we're both at work." How devious of Jack. Did he suspect Chris's interest? "It will take a lot longer to get the job done," Chris warned. "I don't mind staring early and finishing late." Baring his teeth in a smile that didn't reach his eyes, Jack replied. "Take as long as you need. I don't mind paying a little extra to ensure my wife and I retain our privacy." Chris didn't miss the emphasis and jealousy reared its head. However, punching his employer on day one probably wouldn't go over well. He gnashed his teeth as he followed Jack to the basement. He needed to find a way to change the husband's mind about his work hours. The whole point of getting the job was to ru

Jiao heard someone knocking at the door but ignored it. House rule number one when Jack went out was 'don't answer the door'. So she didn't and nearly peed her pants when someone opened the front door. Worse, she couldn't smell them because she'd caught a cold and with her nose stuffy ? red too, from blowing, ick ? she didn't know if friend or foe entered. Although, considering they had no friends, foe seemed more likely. Grabbing a hold of the rolling pin she was using to make a pie crust for the quiche she'd planned for lunch, she vetoed the hallway which would have meant a direct confrontation with the intruder and instead, slunk through the dining and living room area coming up behind the stranger in the front hall. Wearing a plaid shirt, jeans, and a baseball cap, he seemed really large and imposing. Shutting her eyes tight, she swung. The object of her whack, grunted, and she opened her eyes to see him still standing, so she swung again. Down he went in a sprawl
