Chapter Seventy-one

Drakken awoke late the next morning, and that was why he was the last to join breakfast. All heads turned as he pushed the dining door open, strolling in. They were all seated at the dining table, and thankfully, Benjamin was not present.Drakken's father frowned disapprovingly at his tardiness, raising a glass of water to his upturned lips. They held eye contact until Drakken settled on the armchair across him."Your beta here was just telling me how rogues infiltrated the pack." His father's gaze flitted from Duncan back to his. "I despise feeling like the pack is being threatened.""It is not. It would all come to blow out when the festivities are over and the guests are gone.""That is it? You are not doing anything to resolve it?""Alfred," his mother said, soothingly so as not to vex him for interrupting. "Let the boy eat."But the man went on. "He is distracted these days. Could not even take the guests on a kingdom tour yesterday. Everyone anticipated it because they thought y

Chapter Seventy-two

Eleanor tugged on her robe and went out for a stroll that evening after a well-deserved meal and shower. She could not remember the last time she had gone for a stroll, and recent events suggested she probably should not be out alone.Still, she stepped out into the night and allowed the wind to caress her skin. She stood there for a few seconds, basking in the feel she had missed for many days. Night walks were beyond therapeutic.Eleanor went to the stables first and found the horses awake. Gregory's horse in particular. He stayed up late just like its owner always did. She patted its head as he chewed on something she could not tell. She went to the empty garden next. It seemed even more beautiful at night, the moonlight glistening down on rose petals, the beautiful serenity stealing her breath away. How come she had never visited when the sun went down?Eleanor lay down on the ground, her face up to the crescent moon. It would be a full moon in weeks, and Evie had mentioned someth

Chapter Seventy-three

Eleanor could not get over Drakken's words three days later, and his absence that followed. He had explained everything to her but she still had concerns. It was progress, still. Eleanor had not heard him open up that much in the past months, except that one time he got drunk and told her about his engagement with the vampire princess.Late in the evening, when Eleanor and Emma finished up work for the day, Eleanor sat in the hallway, reading from a magazine, but for some reason she could not concentrate. She had been very pleased to discover everything Drakken did was for her safety. That was tangible proof that he cared for her, wasn't it? Why then did things have to be that complicated? Why had he brought her to the palace in the first place and disrupted her peaceful life?Everything would have been the way it was if he had not given Ambrose money to kidnap her. So the blame came back to Drakken. And now his father would have her killed too if he found out about her. It just kept

Chapter Seventy-four

The palace was free from guests a week later and Drakken was more than happy to see them leave. He watched from the window in his study, taking note of the people that drove out in large numbers. His father bid some of them goodbyes, but his eyes could not find the one person they searched for. The vampire king and princess were nowhere to be seen. Drakken wanted them gone the most. The last week with them there was nothing but an inconvenience. Gwendolyn was insufferable with her meek manipulation, and her father boastful and egoistic. He had spoken to the man a handful of times about politics and philosophy. They both held too many different belief systems. Merging the kingdoms sounded more like the beginning of a rift rather than a binding unity. But Drakken's father was too blind to see the bigger picture. He only wanted his son married off for his own selfish motives.Drakken lowered his curtains after every last one of them had left and stepped out of his study, heading straight

Chapter Seventy-Five

Eleanor threw her legs out of bed the next morning, stretching out her tired bones. She stirred the fire in the burning hearth to heat it as she rubbed at her arms, chasing off the goosebumps that spread. The nights were getting colder and longer, and Eleanor wished she did not have to spend them alone. She would wake up most nights, reaching out to the space beside her bed as if expecting Drakken to be there. She was disappointed every single time. His body heat was greater than any burning hearth, more comfortable than a blanket.Pushing the thoughts of him aside, Eleanor hurriedly got dressed and went down to the healing school. She rushed inside, running into Emma who pushed a trolley of hospital supplies to the storage room."Am I on time?" she asked as Emma only shook her head in wonderment."Follow me."Emma gently nudged open a door and strode into the room. It was a big room used for storage, smelling greatly of antiseptic, disinfectants, and a hint of blood.Eleanor scrunche

Evie's shock mirrored Eleanor's whose lips fell slightly open at her sudden visitor. She had not spoken to Gwendolyn face to face, not even once, except for that one encounter where Benjamin introduced her as his girlfriend. Still, Eleanor had not seen a reason to engage in the conversation. But she was here now in Eleanor's room, staring at her as though they had a lot to confer. What if Gwendolyn already found out about her being Drakken's mate? Or their constant dalliance. Was she there to threaten her? Ask her to leave the palace at once?"You both look like you have just seen a ghost," Gwendolyn broke the silence with a charming smile plastered on her flawless face. The girl looked like a mannequin with a figure to slay for, Eleanor observed. "Is anything the problem?"Eleanor finally broke out of her reverie. "No. Not at all. I-I was not just expecting you," she said. "You should have let me know beforehand you were coming so I could prepare...""Oh, there would be no need for t

Chapter Seventy-seven

Eleanor was getting one too many unexpected visitors that night. First was the vampire princess. Now Benjamin had shown up too, towering over her door in an intimidating manner. He might not mean to seem that way, but taking up that much space with his size surely did make it so.Fear kicked in again and Eleanor wished she had not asked Evie to leave for the night. If she had not been in such haste to see the Alpha King, she would not have dismissed her maid."What brings you to my room?" Eleanor summoned up the courage to ask. It was unusual for him to visit. She had agreed to be friends with Benjamin, but it did not insinuate he could show up to her room whenever he liked without invitation. It made her a bit uncomfortable. It was almost late at night. What if Drakken had seen them and gotten the wrong impression? She could not be bothered about that anymore, Eleanor reminded herself."I am curious," he spoke, moving away from the door. "Where were you going?"She had no reason to a

A few days later, there was a meeting in which Drakken was present. Various contentions arose during the pack's meeting regarding the upcoming moon festival, but Drakken kept mute amidst all that. Benjamin sat opposite him on the table, seeming unbothered and uninterested in the preparations. His presence irritated Drakken who thought it would be better for him to leave. He was not contributing in any way after all."Security has to be tighter than the last festival, I suppose," one of the elders said. "We can't afford to have any more attacks on the pack.""I agree. They came after the Alpha King last time. Who knows what they would do next?"The recent attack on the Alpha King spiked insecurity in the kingdom, and an unhealthy amount of rumour. Some said it would be best if Drakken wedded the vampire princess sooner for added security from the vampire kingdom, while others were suspicious of the vampires themselves.Drakken's own suspicions were targeted at his half-brother. But he

Chapter Seventy-nine

The seamstress arrived that afternoon to take Eleanor's measurements. She was too chatty for Eleanor's liking, even worse than the first time they met. And a bit gossipy. The woman did not stop asking questions about the Alpha king’s new lunaquen, which Eleanor corrected a few times as the princess was not Lunaqueen yet.Eleanor's mind drifted away to Benjamin's visit and what he had said to her. It was harsh, but it did not make it any less true. Drakken's focus would be on the princess when they tied the knot. There would not be a need for her anymore which meant a lot of things. She could no longer sneak out to his room in the middle of the night. Their late night horse rides would be a thing of the past. And she would be cast away like garbage, just as Benjamin described.Eleanor blew out a sigh as the seamstress stared up at her. "What is wrong?""Nothing. Carry on and do not mind me."The woman whipped out her measuring tape and resumed. Gregory had come to Eleanor the other nig

Benjamin was astounded when one of the palace guards came to inform him that his father had summoned him to his study. It wasn't often the old man did, so getting such an offer came as a surprise to him. When he arrived, his father's head was bent over an old ledger that held his attention but on noticing him, closed it and waved him in. A girl soon dashed in to serve them some red wine.Alfred dismissed the girl as she stood by in case of more orders, for some privacy."You were not being too discreet in eye fucking that girl," Alfred pointed out. "I brought you to this palace for a purpose but it seems you are getting distracted by the women in it.""I can have a little fun along the way, can't I?" He smiled into his cup as he tasted the sweetness on his tongue. "Alcohol and women are what a man needs. I'm trying to have the best of both worlds here.""I do not want you swayed from keeping an eye on your brother. You never know what he is up to."His father made it clear the only re
