Chapter 31: A Council Warned

Lyall watched Loriann pull away from the house in her old truck. He could hear the suspension squeaking from here as it bounced down the dirt road towards town. Willow had been gone all weekend. He hadn't visited the café since she kicked him out of her house. His anger tinged his eyesight red before he shook it away. He would get her back. She was his. She had been promised to him. He waited a moment before he approached the house, sniffing the air. His hair flowed around his shoulders, wild and unkempt. His hand wrapped around the doorknob and tried it. Locked. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a copy of the key he had made a year ago. The house was silent. He closed the door quietly behind him and looked around. It was exactly the same as the last time he was here. Except, there was an emptiness to it. The house felt hollow. It felt as if Willow didn't live here anymore. Even her scent was lighter as if she were more a visitor as opposed to a resident. Her room looked

Chapter 32: Here Comes the Bride

A loud ringing sounded, rousing Willow from her sleep. She cracked open an eye and saw Garin's phone light up. He was still snoring. She shook him roughly. "What?" he groaned, rolling over. "Your phone," she said, shoving him lightly towards it. "No," he said and felt around for it, his eyes still squeezed tightly shut. The bright light seared Willow's eyes and she quickly buried her face in her pillow. "It's my sister," he said, his voice still thick with sleep. "Audrey are you okay?" he asked. He listened for a moment, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers. "You've got to be kidding me. I'll deal with it tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up. alright. Bye." He tossed his phone back onto the nightstand. "What's going on?" Willow asked, peering from underneath the pillow. Garin stared at the ceiling for a minute. "Garin?" she asked, wondering if he had fallen back asleep. "You know how you told me about your wolf marriages?" he replied. "You mean our intended ar

Chapter 33: When the Alpha Calls

Garin stormed out of his parents' house, enraged. He had never been so close to physically fighting someone in his entire life. His parents had always been a bit fanatical about the Red Hood legacy but for the most part, they had let him live his life. Now, now that he was finally happy, they thrust some vapid, blonde trust fund girl at him, expecting him to happily dive into a loveless marriage. He grit his teeth together, nearly wanting someone to follow him just so he had someone to unleash his anger upon. No one came. Everyone else was happy to play their parts. Well, not Audrey but she was subtler than him. She would find a way out of this. His parents didn't care what their children wanted. Audrey wasn't even attracted to men, for god sake! And yet, sitting there on the couch, a man for her. They couldn't at least extend the courtesy to choose someone she could at least tolerate. He drove faster than usual to the café. He needed to see Willow. She was a cooling balm to the

Chapter 34: A Picture Tells a Thousand Words

"Would you like some tea?" Loriann asked her visitors. Rashida nodded. "That would be nice, thank you." She settled herself at the dining table tucked into the corner of the large kitchen. She motioned for her daughter and husband to wait in the living room. Loriann filled a white chipped teapot with the tea and carried it on a tray to them, adding some of her homemade scones and mugs. When she came back into the kitchen, she laid a similar spread between her and Rashida, but she didn't feel much like eating now. She knew there was no beating around the bush with her alpha, but she still deferred to her before speaking. Rashida was looking down at the strong black tea in her mug, letting it warm her hands. "I can imagine how many bad memories this brings up for you and I can understand your hesitation in taking action with Willow," Rashida began, her dark amber eyes looking over Loriann. Loriann had seemed to age before her eyes, she looked tired and worn. "It is only because

Chapter 35: A Summons

Garin stared down at the people in the picture. He could see Willow in both of them. She had her mother's sharp features and jaw, but the shape of her eyes was all her father's. Her mother's eyes glowed even in the picture, aged by twenty years. He looked at her father. He was ordinary, his eyes a regular, human brown. There was something similar about him. It was as if he had seen him somewhere before, but he brushed it off, probably just seeing the similarities in Willow. "Why were they killed?" he asked handing the picture back to Loriann. She sighed, staring down at the picture. She caressed the photo with the tip of her finger before sliding it back into the box. "Because they loved each other. They ran away and got married. They had Willow. The council was going to punish them when they first found out that they were a couple. However, they left, and the council considered the matter settled. When they came back with a child, the council exonerated them. They did not want to

Chapter 36: Set Into Motion

Willow drove home quickly after hurriedly locking up the café. Fat snowflakes began to fall as she tore down the road to her house. Her grandmother's truck wasn't there. She must still be visiting whatever random relative she rushed off to see. She would need to pack as much as she could fit into her few duffle bags. Thankfully, she wore the same few pieces all of the time so it would be light. As she opened her front door a scent hit her. The alpha had been here. Her thick musky scent lingered in the air. "Shit," Willow said aloud and ran to her room. She pulled her bag from underneath her bed and began shoving clothing into it. She was clearing out her toiletries when she heard the front door open. "Willow?" her grandmother's voice floated up the stairs. "Up here!" she called back and threw her bag into the closet, shutting the door. Her grandmother's face looks tired. Her eyes glanced around the bedroom, noting the half-open drawers. "They summoned you?" she asked and sat

Chapter 37: So It Begins

"Are you okay?" Garin asked as Willow came bursting into the house, her eyes frantic. "Come here," he stood and wrapped her in his arms, smoothing down her braid. Her breath hitched against his chest. "I'm not okay. Shit just got serious. I got a summons," she said and pulled out of his arms, pacing around the living room. "A summons? To court?" Garin asked confused. She shook her head roughly. "Not exactly. The council, it is like a group of our elders that uphold our laws, sent me a message today. I am to be tried in a few days for our relationship. There are a few different outcomes, two of which at least still leave us alive." Garin watched her pace, his arms crossed in front of his body. "Your grandmother told me, well, sort of, about what our options are." Willow froze. "You spoke to my Gramme?" Her eyes were wide and wild, her scent grew stronger the more agitated she became. "She came by earlier. She…she told me about your parents. She said that we only have a few o

Chapter 38: The Alpha Calls

A knock sounded loudly and startled Loriann from her baking. She wiped her hands on her apron and headed to the front door, wary. It was Keena. "Keena? What are you doing here so late?" she asked and ushered the woman inside. She glanced behind her and saw that she was alone. "Where is your father?" he usually accompanied her anywhere she went, acting as chauffeur and bodyguard. The girl was solemn as she let Loriann lead her to the kitchen. The warm smells of pumpkin pie drifted through the air, thick with spices and butter. Keena sat down, somehow still regal despite wearing a thick winter coat and jeans. "We've received a message from one of the scouts. There seems to be a congregation of Red Hoods assembling at the Brochade's. I am aware that they have arranged marriages for their children, however, something about this just isn't sitting right with me. Why would so many be here when the wedding dates have not yet been set?" she asked Loriann. Loriann's eyes took on a calcula

Chapter 39: Answering the Call

Lyall ran as fast as his body will take him, fighting the alpha's call. He feels the pressure of her, pushing down on him. A whimper escaped his mouth, but he pressed on. He knew that in a few more miles, he would be out of her territory and away from her authority. He had thought that his plan would work. Show the family that Garin was still sneaking around with Willow. They would pack their things and drag him away. Instead, Red Hoods began flooding into town, and then he got the call from the alpha. It only meant one thing. The wolves would fight. He knew that it would turn back on him. He had to obey his alpha, especially in her presence. He couldn't challenge her. He would be killed in an instant. Lyall just hoped that his father wouldn't be held for what he did. There were only two people to blame, Willow and that hunter. As he pushed across the territory line into Canada, it felt as if he were trying to squeeze through a rabbit hole. His whole body constricted, and his lun

Chapter 40: Pack Tactics

Willow felt as if everyone's eyes were on her as she walked up the gravel path to Rashida's home. This was the home of every pack alpha, consisting of a large lodge complete with various outbuildings to include guest quarters and a meeting center. She walked to the meeting center now, her grandmother beside her. Other wolves trickled around them, some giving her wary looks and others nodded their hellos. It would be a joyful occasion had they been there for any other reason. Willow had always looked forward to their gatherings. While she wasn't social by nature, her wolf side was and responded in kind when she was surrounded by her pack. She felt it now, buzzing through her veins. In spite of her trepidation, it felt good to be here. She had asked her grandmother if they would speed up her trial to tonight but Loriann had assured her that the Red Hoods gathering was more of a pressing issue. They followed the others into the large building and took their designated seats. The Bitte
