A slave's dragon

An explosion of light makes Astrid scream and close her eyes. She hears Loras saying something in the background, but she can't understand what. After a moment, she feels his familiar warmth on her skin as he picks her up and runs away. She opens her eyes again after what feels like hours and even now the colorful light in front of her is blinding."What is happening?" She asks Loras while he still holds her in his arms, looking at the source of the light and taking small steps back."You did it..." He answers."What?" She asks again, confused. He points up at the sky and Astrid sees Dracos flying in circles above what looks like a head of a dragon forming from the light. The sun is almost down when the dragon fully emerges from the egg and the light dims down to nothing.Astrid watches in disbelief as two magnificent beasts fly above them. One playful and one cautions."It's not a baby dragon?" She asks, looking around like this other dragon just happened to be around and the dragon

A slave against the king

Thousands of men wearing armor are gathered around a few huge fires. Tents, carriages with provisions and stock animals are laying beneath their feet like a sea of blood.Astrid is paralyzed and Loras curses his brother's name. They thought they had more time... They thought that supporters of the prince are not that many. They thought... They thought a lot of things that prove now to be wrong. Before she could even wrap her head around the situation, Loras already pulled himself together."Astrid! Give me your hand!" He commands her and she looks up. Just like when they kissed earlier, he is upside down, flying above her."What?" She asks looking at his extended hand with concern."Now!" He says again, and before she could let her fear knock some sense into her, she grabs his hand. As though Aine and Dracos could feel their plan. They roll over and Astrid falls from Aine's back into Loras' arms. Thousands of feet high in the sky. "Great job, little one."This was traumatizing enough

A slave's promise

"Come in, Astrid..." He says, obviously pissed by her barging in. Once the door is closed he adds. "Mate or not, you will ask for permission to come in. I am still your god-damn king and you will respect that!""No, you are not." Astrid answers just as pissed."Don't over do it, Astrid." He warns her, signaling her to get out, but she ignores him and continues."Because my king isn't a cold-blooded asshole, who would break his sister's heart and kill his best friend just because he is pissed because they didn't tell him everything like they can't have feelings and hopes and plans that don't require your opinions. This is the problem, isn't it? That they didn't ask you. That you couldn't be in control of the situation, that someone close to you did something without your approval. Your ego is the only thing hurt right now.""Enough!" He shouts, coming closer, dominating her with his height. But Astrid doesn't back down."Tell me I'm wrong.""Servants saw. They will spread rumors and he

A slave's king departs

"Do you want me to marry Tommen? If he kills you?" Astrid stares at Loras in utter shock."He would be weak, he would look for ways to strengthen his claim, and marring another dragon rider will be more beneficial for him than any alliance." Loras explains, calmly. And that pisses Astrid off even more."And why would I do that?""Because being his strength would mean he would fight to keep you safe.""Did it cross your mind that I'd better die than marry him?""Yes.""And?""No. You won't die.""You can't order me from beyond the grave.""I don't order you. I am asking you. Let me go to the battle with the consolation that you are going to be safe regardless of the result. Let me go knowing that even if the worse happens, you will be here to stop Tommen from destroying the kingdom." His words are so soft, and the look in his eyes is so warm. Astrid can't help it. Even if her heart breaks with this promise, if this is what he needs, she is ready to sacrifice anything, even her soul."V

A slave's old friend

"You condemned yourselves to death." Sansa says, her eyes glancing around the room, falling one by one on every trembling favorite.Astrid is pale as a ghost. With the law in her hand, Sansa could kill her before Tamara or Loras could have any chance to intervene. And no one could blame her."Which favorite?" Sansa asks, turning back to the man."I didn't see, Your Grace. She was wearing a scarf over her head." He answers and Sansa looks at him thoughtfully for a second."Throw him in the dungeon until this investigation is over. After that, you will leave the palace."The man starts crying again."Thank you for your mercy, Your Grace."Only if Astrid could benefit from a bit of that mercy too. But looking at Sansa's burning eyes, she knew that was not possible."Your rooms will be searched." She announces and then looks at Astrid. "Yours will not. I would never hear the end of it if I search through my sister's apartment so consider yourself lucky."Astrid sighs in relief, but doesn'

A slave's search for answers

The night passes agonizingly slowly as Astrid feels Aine's agitation rising almost untill midnight. And then nothing... She has no way of contacting Loras and she can't explain to anyone why she is so anxious. The morning comes and goes and everything passes by her unnoticed. Tamara's words at breakfast, Esmee's questions, Sansa's screaming at the favorite's meeting. She can't focus on anything, walking around like a zombie. When the time for the messager’s arrival comes she glues herself to the balcony, her eyes fixed on the road."What's up with you today?" Tamara asks for the third time before Astrid even notices she is standing next to her."I have a bad feeling." Astrid explains and the princess' smile vanishes."Don't scare me, Astrid..." She laughs nervously but says nothing else as she starts looking at the road herself. They end hours like this, in an anxiety-filled waiting."Lady Tamara, Lady Astrid." Bella calls them. "Lady Sansa asked for a harem meeting in the common room

A slave's letter

The next day is chaos in the harem. Everyone is on edge and the lack of news from the battlefield creates even more tension. Tamara is constantly fighting with Sansa. Last evening, after they talked, she went to her older sister's room and threw Astrid's contraceptive tea at her. That apparently caused a whole different mess because, apparently, Sansa had feelings for James too and before the late king died, he agreed to marry them. "And no one knew?" Asks Astrid, grateful for the drama to distract herself. "No. They had dinner and he said he will summon James' father the next day to discuss. But in the morning, our father died." "And she told no one?" "Well, James is Loras' best friend. She knew my brother won't force him to marry Sansa just because she likes him. I guess she was waiting for an opportunity or trying to forget. I have no idea. I don't even know if James knew about any of this." "He would have told you." "I don't know. He always seemed to avoid Sansa but I just

A slave awaits trial

"Guards!" Sansa shouts as Astrid sits frozen in front of her, reading over and over the letter in her hands."Your Grace... This letter is a lie!" Astrid finally comes into her senses only when the guards rip the piece of paper from her shaking hands and give it back to Sansa."Do you think I can't recognize my brother's writing? Or his signature?" She asks, puffing."It may be from him, but every word is a lie!" Astrid answers."Why would a rebellious prince caught in the middle of war write you, a mere slave a false love letter? Do you hear yourself?" Sansa turns her back to Astrid before she gets the chance to answer and signs the guard to take it away.Unfortunately... the way to the dungeon goes straight through the common room. During lunch.Astrid can hear the sound of spoons dropping from the girls' hands when she passes by, her eyes glued to the ground. They don't even whisper gossip anymore. They are so shocked, they just stare."Astrid?" Lanna shouts from above as she looks

A slave on trial

"Tommen?" The world starts spinning around Astrid as she looks at the familiar face in front of her. There is no mistake. Tommen... This is Tommen. Loras' brother. But how... What kind of cruel magic is this? She... she just slept with him. No... she slept with Loras just earlier. She could see his face, his smile, his eyes. That was her love, her mate. When she turned around something changed. It was Tommen hurting her. She feels dirty. Even scratching the skin off her flesh won't make her feel the same again. Astrid falls to the ground, crying, while the prince starts laughing. "Astrid... you are my wife now... You promised Loras to marry me. Remember?" He asks again and again as his laugh slowly transforms into a demonic howl. "No!" Astrid creams as she opens her eyes. Everything is covered in the darkness around her so it takes a minute until she realizes she is still in the prison cell. Loras... or Tommen never came. It was just a nightmare. Just an image in her head... It

A sentence for the slave

Astrid listens to Lanna's statement in a defeated silence. Tamara was right..."You were friends with lady Astrid since you came here, weren't you?" The favorite asks."Yes. We came from the same village so we knew each other even from before." Lanna answers."How would you describe her?""When we were little, all the boys were fascinated by her eyes. Grey like a storm. They would swirl around her at every moment, taking bets about who could tame the storm. Childish plays. But Astrid would just use it to torment the other girls. She would make everyone bully the pretty girls until they wouldn't show their faces around. I was lucky because she didn't see me as beautiful." Lanna tells her tearful story with such dramatics that Astrid can't help but roll her eyes.Enough! She gets it. It wasn't ok for Astrid to fall for Loras after he gave Lanna hope. It was a shitty thing to do and she is sorry for it. Lanna went through a lot because of that and even though not everything is on Astrid
