Chapter 21: The Wrong Turn

Horror masks my face. I stutter. "Wh-What do you mean?" "Alpha Zeke knew the moon goddess will reject his mate's child, so he sunk his hands into the dark to look for help. He asked a witch to bypass the goddess's curse and then he will dedicate his heir to their coven. It backfired when the plan fell through and she rejected the child on a night like this. The cunning witch returned for her cut. It was a life for a life." I gasp as my shaking hands shield my mouth. Tears drop one after the other. What is really going on here? "How do you even know all of this?" I sniffle, and my voice breaks. Frida stares off at the green flowers and plants coating this patio. Her eyes are distant as she says, "Because Scarlett Burns is my sister. She's family, Mare. The alpha killed her." I'm confused about what to believe. Drusila's voice in my head plays like a broken record. My trust is not sufficient for all the offers coming in. I can't tell who deserves it. She continues. "He raised the s

Chapter 22: Escaping The Rogue

MARE: I scream, but the surge of water into my system shuts me up. I'm plunged beneath the surface again and all sounds drown out. The water is dark around me and the deeper I go, the lesser my eyes work. I struggle to swim up again, but the force pulling me down is great. It's worse because I can't figure out what it is. I thrash my legs violently and when my head shoots over the surface, I suck in as much air as I can. The metal door is just an arm's stretch away. I pluck out the key from beneath my tongue and shove it into the lock, begging my luck to shine this once. I can't just break it open, because then he'll know. "Come on." I mutter into the deafening silence surrounding me. "Come on." My shaking hands are not even helping matters. I will and will the door to budge, but it still doesn't. My wolf panics within me. She thinks we are going to die and I do too. I'm plunged underwater again and this time, the force is something I can't fight. They say I have far greater abi

Chapter 23: A Silver Legacy

MARE: It's a full moon already. I race through a sloping path, thick with tall bushes. A cluster of enormous trees surrounds me. I flash through each one without intending to stop. I've come this far to return and I will never. Suddenly, my wolf catches the sounds behind me. I hear footsteps, fast like that of wolves. I know they've found Frida and are hot on my tail. The hope that soared through me a second ago dwindles, but I don't stop running. I hear something pierce through the air space next and before I can react, a sharp pain strikes me from behind. I feel the arrow tear through every layer of my skin. It's wolf's bane. I scream and crumble to the ground. A hand grabs me and pulls me up right after. I hide the gun in my other hand behind me. It doesn't help that my heart breaks to pieces when I realize it is Jai-Blynn who shot me down. I see the guilt drowning him as he stares down at me. "It will be okay. Trust me." He whispers, and I snarl at the words coming out of his

Chapter 24: Willing Slave

Frida's voice is in my head, haunting me with the truth. Tuiren gave her answer. I'm with Zeke's child, and now it feels more real. Running away is like a taboo because I can't deal with this alone. I will need help and I'm not planning to keep the child for myself. It makes sense to stay and let him have it once the duration elapses. But even my thoughts are scaring me more than death itself. She's staring at me with that apologetic gaze, and I still dislike it. This has nothing to do with her. I'm grateful she confided in me about her sister's death and let me know exactly what I was dealing with. If it wasn't for her, Zeke would've kept me in the dark all along. My voice cracks from the shock. "Frida, this is my fate. It's not your fault. Listen to me—" As I'm speaking, footsteps approach. I see Frida's attention shift to our guest. After a minute, the figure stands between our cells, and I see Zeke's tall frame. He's alone and his brows are drawn together with rage. I'm still

Chapter 25: Power

How did I escape? I recall the blinding lights and that dazzling silver moon, but I don't think any of it was me. The look in Jai-Blynn's eyes tell me it's better to keep my mouth shut until I figure out what exactly happened to me back there. If the beta's wondering about it, Zeke must be, too; but why did he say nothing about it earlier? He just came intending to set me free, which surprised me. "I don't know." I whisper after a while of silence. He frowns harder at me, but he doesn't continue hounding me with that question. Jai-Blynn studies me for another minute. I can't tell what's going through his mind or where his thoughts are. I just know he suspects me and my supposed abilities. "It is too late to change my mind, Mare." He mutters while clenching his fists and quickly turns away, walking out of my cell with long strides. I don't have the luxury of responding. He disappears before I can even get the words out. Maybe I did wrong, dragging Jai-Blynn into all of this with

Chapter 26: The Witches

ZEKE: My feet can't carry me fast enough. I storm through the halls with my staff in one hand. Nothing dares block my path to the pack doctor's lair. I can't believe she was right under him and he let this happen. Anger and fear mix inside me and the result is something I dislike. Taz bows to me but refuses to meet my gaze. I'm scowling at him because he knows he has messed up big time. "How bad is she?" I ask as he follows, walking behind me. "I arrived a few minutes ago. It seems she's been like that for three days." A pang strikes hard in my chest. I clench my jaw and move even faster. Marelyn is in danger. My child as well, and it's all my fault. I climb down the long stairs and dive into the aisle between the cells. Drusila is already with her, and I avoid her gaze even as I approach. I know what she will say. This was all on me. If Marelyn hadn't been so stubborn, none of this would have happened. Her cell comes into view and I see her lying there unconscious. The smell of

Chapter 27: The Witches II

An hour later, I'm putting on a maroon coloured thin strapped dress with a deep v-cut neck that's generous with my cleavage. It also has a front slit high above mid-thigh. I pull up the last strap and adjust it on my shoulder, then I sense his presence immediately. My eyes find Zeke's through the vanity mirror. His room is right next door and him popping in and out of mine is something I expect. He's behind me in a flash. I feel his warm, calloused hand against my bare skin. It sparks tingles in the pit of my stomach. Zeke zips my dress slowly until it locks at its end. He surprises me by pushing my hair away to one side and slipping on a beautiful diamond necklace around my neck. It's sparkly against my skin, but what bothers me more is the tiny heart pendant. I press my fingers on it unconsciously. "I didn't peg you as a romantic." "The cameras will have to see I spend on what is mine," he says, close against me. His hot breath fans my neck and I mentally threaten my eyelids to

Chapter 28: Six of Diamonds

They've not harmed me yet. It can only mean there's something they want from me. I'm fixed between Dawn and Coral in the back seat of a black sedan and where they are taking me, I can't tell. Fear slinks up my spine. I'm scared, and I can only hope Zeke notices I've been kidnapped. He has to save me because he's the only one powerful enough to do so. I just hope he will not abandon me like my family did, or like Chase did. Coral keeps her gaze stuck on the view outside the window. I find her white shoulder-length hair pretty, but eerie. She covers it with a chic dark brown hat. I think, of the three, the only one I'm wary of is Bessie, the redhead who's occupying the passenger seat. She's mean. I can tell. Her heart of stone is visible through her grey eyes, and you don't even have to look that close to see it. Suddenly, Dawn breaks the silence within the car. Her light brown eyes turn to me and I hold my breath. "You're safe now. Trust us, Marelyn. No one will ever harm you ag

Chapter 29: Confession

I'm shocked to see him here. I cock my head to the side, squinting my eyes at him as a thought comes to mind. There's no way. It can't be—but I guess it is. Why else will Jai-Blynn be standing before me now, clearly acquainted with these witch sisters?"If you don't believe us, then maybe you'll believe him." Coral calls my attention. I look over my shoulder and watch her steer away from the table and out of the room.Jai-Blynn says nothing as he stands there. He's staring at me and I do the same. I have questions and he knows it. He talked about having someone on the outside who could help. I could have never guessed he was involved with witches.Dawn says from behind me, "Should we give you both some time alone?""Yes, please." Jai-Blynn responds without taking his eyes away from mine.Isolde and her sisters clear out of the room immediately. They give us the space we need to work through this misunderstanding. I wait until I'm sure they are far gone before I speak."Witches? This i

Chapter 30: Everyone's Lying

ZEKE: My world spins off course. Hours after the show and she's still missing. I let her slip away from my hold and the mare thought of that is ruining me. I can't think straight. My wolves have searched everywhere for her. They've raided the territories of all of Moon Grove's enemies, including hunters, but I still can't find her. The more time passes, the more danger she will be in. Her sudden disappearance had me using our pregnancy as an excuse on live TV. The entire world knows I'm expecting a baby a little too early. This isn't how I meant everything to go down. I clutch the side of my head and pull at my roots. I'm in my study and the next thing I know; I swipe off the contents on my desk, shoving them to the floor. My palms support me on the desk as I breathe hard. I sense her presence before she speaks. "Zeke, I think we are looking in the wrong direction," Drusila says. She doesn't have to tell me. I realized it the second my wolf, Aiden, came with the news after reques
