Chapter 191

RASHID STEPPED ASIDE, ALLOWING CATHERINE past and waited for her to disappear in the crush of soldiers moving through the corridor.'Rashid.'His ear prickled at the sudden close proximity of the Northerner and he turned to find her vivid eyes on his. 'Leseach.''Her Highness has requested a lesser dosage of her evening drink.'Rashid nodded though the unease rose again at the thought of dosing the heir to Elion's throne drink with that poison. It appears to do her no harm, he assured himself. And Leseach keeps watch of it, not just Ignatius; two sets of eyes are better than one.Rashid hadn't believed Ignatius when first told about the poison. Seeing the package marked with the Sorceress' ring astonished him that first afternoon at sea and then after Ignatius' disastrous first attempt at dosing the Princess' drink. Yes, he thought with a sense of relief. At least Leseach keeps hold of the drug.'Good,' he said aloud when she stared at him, appearing to wait for verbal confirma

Chapter 192

MY FINGERS TREMBLED WHILE I dressed this morning, the ship still noisy but most of the sound came from above now; the soldiers and allies gathered on the main deck, impatient to get going. 'Crap!'The smooth links slipped through my fingertips again as I attempted to seal the back seam. A loud knock on the door made me jump.'Highness?'I hesitated for a second then shrugged; he'd seen me in less than this before.'Ignatius,' I called and he entered. 'Please, can you help? I can't get the stupid seam right.'HE PAUSED FOR AN INSTANT mind locking away the image of herflushed, both arms reaching back over her shoulders trying to join the seam, the gap in the mail revealing her pale wool undergarments. A tantalizingly erotic pose, defenceless and begging for his help, her figure arched and exposed. He grinned and stepped forward. 'Of course, it's always tricky the first few times.'The seam started at the base of her spine and he took his time, carefully fitting the two sides t

'READY?''Go for it.'Closing my eyes and ignoring the noise and anxious energy from those still onboard I drew a bubble of energy around Loushka, then opened them, smiling in pleasure at the ease of it. The bubble, hair thin and sheer, flickered with flames that smoothed over the sphere's surface, just visible to the naked eye. I looked at the shore and saw several long boats landed and a couple more moving back to the ship for their next loads. Watching them I absently lifted the bubble, floating us higher and higher until we cleared the masts. 'About to release.''Excellent!' Loushka sounded thrilled. The instant the bubble vanished she flicked her wings open, the fan shaped metal greaves sounding like blades unsheathing. I sensed Kassie and Kerak coming up beneath us. 'We better move.''Hold on!'Wrapping the saddle straps around either arm I flattened myself to the leather when Loushka rocketed into the sky. We burst through clouds and she climbed higher then in a slow,

LOI LEANED FORWARD AND CLENCHED tight with both thighs to rise in the saddle. Not quite a saddle, she thought, bracing herself on the moulded pommel but it allowed a better seatif you weren't wearing chainmail. Thighs of steel at this rate, Loi thought, bracing herself when they rounded a corner. The focus to keep her balance stopped her hearing the odd murmurs at first and when she rested back in the saddle, the track levelling out, the voices chimed through again.Welcome Earth one. We've been waiting for you.'Did you hear that?' Loi twisted to glance at the others.Beside her on Oomoth, Kassie asked in a confused voice, 'Hear what?''A murmuring?' asked Cat from the other side of Loi. Sian on Chaieth, in front of Belsesus, leaned back to look past Cat at Loi with a quizzical expression. Exchanging concerned glances, the centaurs all stopped and Larvaste threw an arm up, the line behind them drawing to a halt.'Yes,' Loi said to Cat. 'Voices, they said they waited for us.'Th

RUMAL AND OOMOTH CONVERSED QUIETLY when Sian came skipping up. Kassie couldn't help smirking at her blonde friend. That flirty little skip in a full suit of chainmail with the dark red rapthna leather plating made the perfect contradiction to her petite form and delicate features; and Sian knew it. She delighted in doing that sort of thing on Earth too, like when she bought a white Hilux fully kitted out for proper four-wheel driving and zoomed around town in it like it was a tiny three door hatch with reckless disregard for the famously obnoxious pedestrians in Wellington.'Kassie,' Sian sang out making Rumal and Oomoth pause. 'We need to put our hoods on.''Me too?' Cat came around from where Leseach and Rashid stood.'Yup.'Kassie went to Oomoth's side and swirled her energy underfoot, lifting herself high enough to rummage through the saddle bag. It lay at the bottom, naturally, and it took a few moments of wrestling past other items to drag the small bit of mail out.'Here,'

Chapter 196

A FIREBALL RIPPED PAST BELSESUS' head and engulfed the now screaming rockvorhn. Behind him Cat muttered and the fireball turned white, incinerating the creature. The others immediately behind it hesitated and above them a urotho whistled and snarled a command. The rockvorhn still appeared uncertain, then the urotho barked the command again.'Hold on, Belsesus!' Cat yelled from behind and the centaur tensed, readying his axe.The rockvorhn launched at them and before he had a chance to lift his weapon, a wall of fire erupted in front of him. It didn't stop the closest creature that slammed into his breastplate scrabbling, and shrieking, trying to get away from the flames. Belsesus threw the stricken animal back into the inferno.'Hotter, Cat!'The fire flashed white hot then vanished, leaving the charred smoking remnants of the rockvorhn scattered before them.IT FELT HORRIBLE. I KNEW those things would have torn us to shreds in an instant but their screams of pain and fear made

Chapter 197

IT WASN'T LIKE LIFTING TOMIAR, or even Sito. The whole ceiling of shattered rock trembled under the spread of energy she pressed against it but occasional pieces of stone dropped from the outer section and smashed to the cavern floor. Loi squeezed her eyes shut and focused on the ceiling, trying to get it stable.Leave, earth one.Your friends are through to the next chamber, leave. At this depth the plants' voices sounded quieter and Loi felt a moment of panic, then Cat's red energy synched with hers and the murmurs filled her mind again. Her friend's energy gave her the extra strength she needed and Loi thickened the shield then started to walk briskly toward the next chamber, mind focused. A vicious snarl echoed in the chamber and Loi twisted to look back then gasped. A strange creature with many legs scuttled across the floor toward her, snarling again. The scant light from the cavern's entrance showed a crown of horns and alarmingly large canines as it swiftly covered the space

Chapter 198

THE EXHAUSTION I USED TO feel at using my energy so extensively didn't hit me now. This new, stronger version of energy made it feel almost like a separate entity. I could sense it lying there, tense and ready if I called on it and the realization of that other part, something ancient, primal, and fully elemental, both terrified and thrilled me. The fire within the very planet, deep beneath the surface called to me and it lusted for Jenviet's death. For too long the DeNaga's had toyed with the natural alignment of the planet and its elements. The debt they owed required payment and only blood would suffice. The dark thoughts made me shudder and I shook them off, turning to look for Loi. I could feel her fatigue from holding the ceiling up. The three girls didn't know how close they stood to the barrier that prevented the archaic things from claiming them. I couldn't get them there quicker but I could sense the distant and every time they forced their gifts to the extreme, it drew the

Chapter 199

KASSIE AND RUMAL WALKED HAND in hand in front of Kerak. Rumal held a torch in his other hand. At the very front of the long train of soldiers and allies, Loi led the way with Larvaste and Sabyn. They kept following the cavern deeper and deeper, the ceiling getting lower. Kassie's heart beat fast at the horrible sense of claustrophobia that threatened when the floor started to climb and larger stalagmites appeared, making it a slow and complicated path that they helped Kerak to squeeze through. The darkness intimidated and more than once Kassie jerked in shock, thinking she'd seen something in the shadows the torch created. Rumal kept a tight hold of her hand and when they paused, while Loi assessed the correct tunnel to take, he pulled Kassie tight against him. She sighed and wrapped an arm around his back while they waited. No point moaning, she thought determinedly. But it will be so nice to get out of these caves.A call travelled from the front of the line to where they stood near

THE FLOOR SHUDDERED WHILE LOI worked the tunnel. Sian, Kassie, and I hugged Sito's muzzle tight, smiling and soothing when the dragon's eyes went wide with fear, the whites showing. Sian did fantastic, her voice not wavering at all while Loi deflected a rock that smashed down beside her. We spoke aloud and via our thoughts as we coaxed Sito to move.'Just a little further, wriggle your bum forward,' Loi called. 'You're nearly there, honey.'Sito wasn't saying much and we could all feel his heart hammering away. It vibrated through his head while we stroked his muzzle. His head nearly cleared the tunnel but I knew his barrel chest would really be feeling the squeeze and the dragon breathed in shallow quick gasps.LESEACH WATCHED WHILE THE THREE girls kept the dragon calm. Perhaps it was due to their strange upbringing that they didn't hesitate to coddle a beast that could wipe out villages. While Leseach admired Sito, she would never talk to him like an infant. But Sian and Cat str
