The story

“I used to live down the street from you guys and was kind of friends with your older brother, Matt, as we were in the same age grade.” Duncan started, glancing away briefly when Michael’s eyes hardened a little at the mention of his older brother. “Those days were bad ones for me, and I hate to remember them, but if you’re to know what happened, I’ll need to relive them.” “I’m sorry about that. However, I’m sure reliving those days is going to be much worse for me than it is for you. I can’t remember you, though.” Michael stated somberly. To date, he still remembered his elder brother, who had been ten years old when the incident occurred, but only vaguely. They had been close, and Michael remembered his brother trying to teach him how to ride a bicycle, even though he had only been a child himself, and how they had caught frogs in the pond a few meters from their house back then. He smiled fondly at the memory but was soon brought out of his reverie when Duncan continued his story.

Decision making

“Look, all this talk is just a waste of time. Let’s get going immediately. You’ll fill me in on what I need to know on the way there. There’s not a second more to be wasted.” Michael said abruptly, the rage beginning to rise within him as he pondered on all that Duncan had told him. He began to stride away as fast as he could, knowing that Duncan would follow him when the latter’s voice rang out.“Um, what about the girl?” Duncan asked hesitantly. Michael thought he could detect a faint tinge of shame in his voice. “Dammit! What even possessed you to kidnap her in the first place? Now she’s only going to cause us to waste time.” Michael yelled, kicking hard at a tree trunk and causing a sizable chunk of it to fall off the tree. He ignored Duncan’s gulp of fear at this action and took a deep breath to calm himself down before pasting a smile that he knew looked fake even without seeing it on his face. Then he headed to the shack in which Audrey was still tied. She was clearly angry and

WASTED EFFORTS

The woods were rife with nocturnal activities, such as the sounds of little animals scurrying around, and other larger animals that Sophia steadfastly refused to think about. She could hear them pausing and continuing their movements, apparently viewing her as no serious threat as she slowly trudged through the bushes. She could not blame them either, after all, this was their time to move around, plus they were in their territory. Sophia had since lost track of time, and all that mattered to her now was getting as far away from the lair as possible, even though she did not know where on earth she was to go, or the dangers that she would meet on the way. She would have loved to think that she had put as much space as possible between herself and the lair, but the truth was that she did not know if that was the case or not. All she knew was that she had to keep going, moving, and never stop, until she keeled over, after which she would recover, stand up, and continue on her way. It wa

A quest

The night was still and quiet as Michael and Duncan drove through it. They did not meet anyone or see any other car on the way, making it seem as though they were the only ones in the whole wide world. Duncan sat on the passenger’s side, dozing and snoring with his mouth wide open. His complexion was still pale, but he looked far better than he had three days ago. In fact, three days ago, after Duncan had used the spell on Audrey to make her forget about the encounter in the bush and the fact that Duncan had kidnapped her, Michael had been fairly certain that the man was going to die on him.Totally exhausted, Michael pulled over to the side of the road, intending to take some time to rest, even if it was ten minutes. As soon as he pulled over though, Duncan came awake slowly and glanced around in a panic. Michael stared at him with raised eyebrows.“What? Why… where are we? Are we safe?” Duncan asked, wiping the remaining traces of sleep from his eyes as he looked around them, but th

The capture

Sophia woke up after what must have been hours, to the sound of her mother crying, and sat up with the speed of sunlight, regretting the swift motion when her head began to pound viciously and her vision swam. She paused for a bit to get herself back and then looked around her. It was already daylight, which meant that she had been out for hours. She was alone with her mother, who was still crying profusely and was sitting beside her, but could not do anything more, because of how tightly she was bound with chains.“Oh, thank God, Sophia. I thought that you were dead.” Maria whispered tearfully when her daughter finally focused on her.Sophia was silently studying her mother’s face, rage welling deep within her at the sight of Maria. She had been beaten so much that her two eyes were almost swollen shut, and her arm was hanging at a crooked angle as though it had been broken. The sky blue shirt that she was wearing was soaked with blood, and without anyone telling her, Sophia knew that

Vain hope

“Your father was the love of my life and my mate, but our pack refused to accept that a human could be my mate, after all, it had never happened in the history of our family, not that I knew of anyway. Our pack was one of the strongest in the werewolf world and boasted about having only purebloods, so when I told them my mate was human, I could understand their anger and resentment, but the heart wants what it wants, and what has been destined can't be avoided. They tried to force us apart and even looked for someone else for me to marry, but I eloped with your father when I discovered that I was pregnant for him.” “You were pregnant with me?” Sophia asked her mother, thinking of how horrible that time must have been for her and her father. “Yes, I was. We managed to elope to a city that was dwelled in majorly by humans and lived there for the better part of my pregnancy, but the pack, spearheaded by Jonas, soon found us. There was nowhere that we could hide, no matter how many times

Blood-thirst

Sophia and her mother shrunk back against the wall of the cell, terror engulfing their features. Jonas coming to the cell was bad … very bad. There was no sign of Duncan or the people he would bring along to rescue them, which was probably best for now, since Jonas was here, and would surely kill any would-be rescuers. “Take her,” Jonas commanded with a toss of his head, indicating Maria. He did not even spare a glance at Sophia. “Please, leave my mother alone. She hasn’t done anything wrong. We'll go very far away from here and never return. I swear you'll never hear from us again.” Sophia begged, coming over to grab the sleeve of Jonas’s shirt tightly while staring up at him with a pleading expression. Jonas glanced down at her briefly with curled lips and then flung her away from himself, so that she landed against the cell wall, her head hitting the wall with a sickening thud. “You bastard! You sick bastard! You spineless asshole! What has a mere girl who does not have any speci

A botched rescue

“You must be joking. What on earth do you mean by ‘we’re going to kidnap the girl?'” Michael asked, watching Duncan closely, but when the man stared back at him for the better part of a minute without blinking, he knew Duncan wasn’t joking. “You really expect us to barge into a den of werewolves and kidnap a girl they’re holding prisoner, is that it?” Michael asked again, slowly this time, enunciating every word, almost as if he was talking to a retard, something which he was seriously beginning to suspect that Duncan was. “Well. I admit it sounds stupid when you say it like that, but that is what we’re going to do anyway. That is why you’re here too. You’re a werewolf, after all.” “Do you have a death wish?” “No. Look, I’m not that stupid, okay? I have someone on the inside who is going to drug them, but the effect of the drug is surely going to wear off if we stand here bickering like jobless people and don’t get there in time.” “So, is he going to drug the entire pack, then? Yo

The meeting

Michael walked through the bushes as stealthily as possible, which would not have been a difficult thing to do, had it been he was dealing with humans, but he was dealing with fellow werewolves, so there was every possibility that he would be heard if anyone happened to be close by. How Duncan expected him to find the prison, and the girl who was held in it, when he had never been here before, beat him, but he had to at least try. All of a sudden, he paused, because he could feel his wolf getting antsy and restless … something that hardly ever happened, and he did not for the life of him, understand why it should be happening now. Also, he was fast becoming aware of a scent that he could not quite figure out, and everything in him was pushing him to go find out the source of that scent, despite his best efforts to concentrate on the task at hand. His wolf was struggling to break free and run wild, and it took all of his willpower to stop that from happening. Following the exact direc

Runaways

“Yes, I’m fine. Are you okay?” He asked her in turn, looking her over, and she nodded her head, her gaze carefully averted. By the time he turned to look at where the alpha he had been fighting with just moments ago was, there was nothing there. His opponent had run away. “How shameless.” Michael sneered at the empty ground. What a cowardly alpha this one was. “What?” The girl, his mate, asked him, clearly confused as to whether he was talking to her or to himself. He glanced briefly at her, trying to fight the undeniable attraction that he felt toward her, but he knew that it would be futile to do so. There was only one way to get rid of the attraction, and even though he knew it would be difficult, he would have no choice but to do it when the time came. From the shy side gazes that she kept giving him, he knew that he wasn’t the only one feeling the attraction. “Wasn’t talking to you. What’s your name?” He asked, scanning the area quickly to see if he would be able to find the ba
