Chapter 31

When Ari woke the next morning, Grayson was still sleeping. Her head no longer hurt from running into the tree, so she decided to take this opportunity to have a bit of fun. She hadn't gone skating for a while, so she thought that now was as good a time as any. After quickly dressing in warm clothes and a heavy coat, she opened the door and a bodyguard was standing on the other side. "Good morning, Princess," the guard replied, and then he stood back discreetly, letting her pass. "Good morning," she replied, not used to having someone there, watching her every move. She started down the hallway and he followed a short distance behind."Cinderella is on the move," he said discreetly in his wrist communicator. "We need another guard for the Big Bad Wolf."Ari laughed, wondering what Grayson would think about the code names the bodyguards had for them. Downstairs, she approached the front desk. "Excuse me, but is there a place where I can go ice skating?"The kind, balding man behind th

Grayson slid his skates over his shoulder waiting while Ari tied the laces of her skates together. They had spent most of the morning skating together and into the afternoon, having lost track of time. He reached for her skates, once she was finished. "Here. I'll carry them for you."Ari shook her head. "No. I have it.""Just be careful with the blades." Grayson smiled. "You don't want to get stabbed in the back.""Nope. I sure don't. And I don't think you do, either," she joked. "I guess we should have put the guards on the blades."Grayson smiled. "Yes… well… I guess we'll have to talk to the equipment manager about it when we get back."Grayson took her hand, feeling like a kid as they walked down the path headed toward the chalet as their bodyguards followed. Goofing around, she jumped on his back and he carried her to the front door. But when they walked in, Grayson froze... for sitting in the foyer waiting was his cousin, Marcus Pierce."What's wrong?" Ari asked, concerned. "Who'

Grayson headed into the chalet, passing the balding front desk clerk—who discreetly averted his eyes, pretending not to notice—and headed toward the elevator. Grayson hit the button and the door opened. A moment later, the elevator stopped on the second floor. Grayson walked purposefully toward their room where two guards were waiting outside.Grayson stopped in front of the door and placed his hands on his hips. "Who was on duty and let Marcus Pierce in?"One agent shook his head, raising his shoulders. The other agent said, "I was, sir."Grayson looked into his eyes. "What the hell were you thinking? Letting Marcus in like that?""Well, this is a public place." The agent shrugged. "Anyone can come here—""Not hardly," Grayson replied. "Not when they've made open threats to the Crown.""I... I—""You're fired," Grayson replied, not waiting for an explanation."What's this all about?" Piers voice rang out behind him down the hallway, his footsteps coming up fast.Grayson wheeled on him

Chapter 34

When Grayson woke early the next morning, the glare of the snow coming through the window would have been blinding, if it hadn't been for the curtains. Suddenly, the events of the day before rushed into his mind. He looked over at Ari, watching her sleep, thinking of how lucky he was to have her for his wife. Not only was she beautiful and kind, she was understanding, too. Grayson smirked. Ari had also wrapped his father around her little finger in just one meeting... not an easy feat. Grayson's father had a knack for seeing through people, seeing who they really were beneath the facade they put out to the public. He saw through Ari and, evidently, he liked what he saw… on the inside. Grayson brushed a strand of dark brown hair away from her face while she slept. She was one of the most beautiful women he had ever known. But the best thing about her was that she had no idea how truly beautiful she really was. But Grayson knew that it wasn't only her exterior beauty, but her inner beau

"I have to go back," Grayson said, placing his hand on the side of Ari's face, forcing her to look into his eyes. "No!" Tears filled Ari's eyes. "No! Don't do it, Grayson. If we go back now, they will arrest you.""Ari, I have to. I can't run away from this." He sat beside her on the bed after he turned off the television. "But what could they arrest me for? I've been here, in Switzerland."Ari sighed. "I guess, but I have a bad feeling about this." Ari slipped into her robe. "When do we leave?""Today." Grayson pulled out a suitcase and started throwing clothes into it."Okay." Ari pulled a change of clothes out of the closet, walked into the second bedroom, and closed the door.Grayson remembered what she had said before about trying to understand. He knew this was hard on her. Getting used to a completely different life overnight would be hard enough, let alone having to deal with the problems associated with Dima and Marcus. Grayson just hoped that she didn't break. He knew she wa

"Do you have any idea who could have wanted Dima dead?" Ari asked Grayson, on the Royal Family's private jet, headed back to Estrea.Grayson shook his head. "Well, Marcus could have set me up, but why would he bring that much shame to the royal family? It would be a reflection on the whole family, not just me."Ari sighed. "Maybe we're grasping at straws. Maybe they won't try and link you to her murder. After all, we weren't even in Estrea when it happened."Grayson patted her hand and then lifted it to his lips. "Let's change the subject. I want to spend this time with you." Ari nodded as she snuggled onto Grayson's shoulder. She just hoped that nothing would link Grayson to Dima's murder. She felt bad for Grayson. When she looked into his eyes, she could tell that he still cared for Dima. Of course, you couldn't be with someone for a few years and not still have feelings for them, no matter what they did. But then again, seeing the person you love in bed with another man would be en

Chapter 37

Ari had asked Sam to drive her to the police station and he did gladly, but she didn't miss the quick glance he gave to Piers before agreeing. She wondered what that was all about, but brushed it off, thinking Sam was probably silently asking permission. But Ari didn't need Piers' permission. She had a feeling that he had been left to run the security for the royals unchecked for many years, leading him to think that he was untouchable, which was a dangerous train of thought. When they got to the station, Sam stayed with her, but stood across the room, a safe distance away, standing guard. She approached a middle-aged policewoman sitting there wearing a nametag that read JOAN KLONDIKE sitting behind the front desk. "I'd like to check on my husband, Prince Grayson Pierce."Joan's head snapped up and then she narrowed her eyes in disbelief. "You're Prince Grayson's wife?"Ari rolled her eyes. "Yes, I am. I thought everyone in the world had heard by now."Officer Klondike raised an eyebro

Chapter 38

When Grayson saw Xavier walk into the interrogation room, he had never been so relieved to see someone in his life. He had been in the police department all morning answering questions, but it had all boiled down to the same question: Did you do it? Did you kill Dima Franz? "Xavier! You're here! What took you so long, man?" Grayson asked, relieved to see his brother. "I've been in the waiting room with Ari. They just let me come back." Xavier pulled him in for a hug and then released him. "How are you holding up?""I'm okay." Grayson sighed. "How's Ari?"Xavier cocked his head to the side. "Worried." Xavier sat in one of the chairs. "She and I were waiting together." He smirked. "The police officer didn't believe that Ari was your wife. The policewoman was practically asking her for a marriage certificate.""Really?" Grayson shook his head. "She hasn't had enough time to get her new driver's license, either."Xavier shook his head. "Nope. Other than a wedding ring, she had no proof t

Despite everything that had happened, Grayson refused to go to the castle. He wanted to wait until he had to go, if ever, before he moved back in. Soon, the limo pulled to a stop in front of his townhouse.Grayson raised her hand to his lips. "Ari, would you mind if I talk to Piers alone? There are some things we need to discuss."Ari nodded, and then kissed him on the cheek. "I'll wait for you inside." She pulled him close and then whispered, "Be careful."Grayson nodded as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. Then he lowered the glass partition between them and the front of the limo."Sam, would you mind escorting Ari into my townhouse?" Grayson asked. "I need to speak with Piers… alone."Sam glanced over at Piers and raised an eyebrow. Piers nodded, obviously giving him permission."Yes, of course," Sam answered Grayson.Grayson didn't know what the dynamic was between them, but he didn't like that Sam appeared to be under Piers' control, that he thought more of Piers' orders than his

Chapter 40

Grayson headed down the hallway toward the townhouse he now shared with Ari. He made a mental note to look for another place with her. They need a place together. A place where she would feel at home. When he walked in, he didn't see Ari, so he walked over to the bar and fixed himself a drink. Then he leaned over, and held it to his head, trying to relax. Then he heard something down the hallway, and his heart sank. Grayson set the glass down, as memories of Dima with another man in his bed ran through his mind.He started down the hallway and opened the bedroom door... but no one was there. He breathed a sigh of relief. But when he turned around, Sam and Ari were walking out of the spare bedroom, laughing. Grayson froze. "What's going on?"Sam looked up and smiled. "We heard a noise from the back, and I told Ari to stay here, but she followed me down the hallway anyway. When I walked into the spare bedroom, there was a woodpecker banging on the window."Grayson raised an eyebrow in
