Chapter 131

Aeros was only slightly faster than Snowduster, which made Eli proud of his choice in asking Cassius if Seph could borrow his steed. The Representative had been reluctant to let anyone else ride his prized possession, but when Eli reminded his friend that Snowduster was the only one likely to be able to keep up with Aeros, and time was of the essence, Cassius gave in. It was a wonder to think that any of the other Representatives would want Eli to return in time knowing if he was out past dark with Seph, he could easily be eliminated from the Choosing, which would give the others a much better chance at becoming the duke. However, Cassius had two important points riding in his favor. First of all, he would do anything for Kit, and it was obvious that Kit did not want Eli eliminated. Secondly, Cassius seemed to understand that there was a good chance there would never be a winner, not just one at any rate.“Would it be possible to stop for a few moments?” Seph call

Chapter 132

The walk to the village was more difficult than Kit had assumed it would be. She’d been warned to steer clear of the mud, which, with Jate’s help, she managed. What she wasn’t expecting was all of the filth and debris lining the streets. From parts of the castle, one could view the village, at least those houses closest to the southeast side of Wrenbrook. It always looked like a cheerful, relatively clean place to live. Kit had spied children playing in the streets there before, seen birds fluttering about, and even noticed some flowers that rivaled those in her own garden. She’d also visited a few times when she was younger, though she’d taken a carriage then, and now that she was making her way down one of the lanes further into the village itself, away from the castle windows, she remembered her mother always insisted on having the drapes on the windows down saying it was best not to let the people glimpse her in all of her glory when she couldn&rsqu

Chapter 133

“Mama, don’t cry.” Mari rushed around the table and wrapped her arms around the thin woman, and Kit realized there had probably been several nights when the children hadn’t eaten even with Tem in her service. Clearly, Pim herself was not well-fed. There needed to be some changes made, and they needed to happen sooner rather than later. Kit had no idea how much pay her guardsmen received, but obviously, it wasn’t nearly enough. Now was not the time to discuss it, not when she could be overheard by the Queen’s Guard. Part of her wanted to rush home and confront the queen, demand those serving in the Princess’s Guard be given a livable wage, enough to support their families. But angering Rona wasn’t likely to accomplish anything. She’d need to think about the best way to handle the situation and keep a cool head. She also wondered what state the rest of the castle workers’ families must be in. Did those who worke

Chapter 134

Convincing Jate to stay with her hadn’t taken much persuasion, even though he was well aware that Kit was too tired for any strenuous activities. Even climbing into the bathtub had been too much for her. Once all of her layers were off and she was wearing a clean shift, she’d discovered the mud was mostly on her clothing, though some had managed to splatter above her boots near her shins, but that had come right off. Snuggled in his arms, she tried to relax, ignoring his bare chest and the fact that all he was wearing were his breeches.Eventually, she’d drifted off to sleep, but her dreams had been unsettling. Visions of Merek’s headless torso running through the castle chasing her, images of Eli being dragged to the chopping block, even Seph being punished for not seducing Eli on the way back from Eastbury, prevented her from sleeping well, and after a few short spurts of restless slumber, she decided enough was enough and rolled over to face the han

Chapter 135

Kit melted back into the bed and Jate put his sword away. “Thank you, Avinia!” Kit shouted, looking out the window. The last splinters of daylight illuminated the sky. Her commander had returned in time.Jate was already getting dressed. She watched as he pulled on his trousers and located his tunic and jerkin. “Must you leave?” she asked, reaching for him as he sat on the bed to put his boots on.“I assumed you’d want to speak to them,” he said, turning to smile at her.“I do want to speak to Seph, but... we didn’t even have a chance to reacquaint ourselves with each other.”With a soft chuckle, Jate leaned down and pressed his warm lips to hers, and Kit gladly opened for him. The kiss was tender and sweet, with just enough passion to remind her of how sensual their times together had been. The man before her had certainly changed from the shy boy she’d first taught to love. When Ja

Chapter 136

Dressed in a rose-colored gown, Kit took a seat on the stool in front of the mirror and let her mind wander as her hair was brushed out. She hoped she’d kept the mud out of it and imagined she must have since there wasn’t any on her pillow. Thoughts of mud brought her back to her trip to the village. She was certain Avinia, Isla, and Seph would already know about the state of the citizens. There was no reason to highlight her own ignorance, but as they began to pin her hair up, Kit said, “Le atsa.” All three ladies stopped what they were doing and stared at her reflection in the mirror.Kit wanted to swivel around to look at their true faces but couldn’t, so as she continued, her eyes flickered from one likeness to the other. “What does it really mean? With you—with who?”The ladies remained silent for a moment before Avinia slowly began to comb again. “Where, uh... where did you hear that?” she asked, her voi

Chapter 137

It wasn’t difficult to convince the queen that Kit was in a foul mood. All she had to do was think about all of the awful things her mother had done to the people over the years, and Kit was nearly shaking with anger. Redirecting that angst against something she could voice wasn’t even too trying since both Seph and Eli made good targets, not to mention there was the situation with Merek. When her mother asked her what was troubling her, Kit had said, “What is there to be happy about?” and thought she caught a small smile on her mother’s lips.“Your labyrinth maze is tomorrow,” Rona reminded her, cutting into a roasted lamb chop. “You must be excited for that.”“I would be if I wasn’t thinking about how some of my men might be overly anxious to have a chance to kiss my ladies instead of me,” Kit pouted.“I doubt most of your men would even consider it.” Rona set her fork aside an

Chapter 138

“It is time for me to redeem myself,” Jate said as Kit entered her chambers. The ladies had already cleared out since they knew Kit would be entertaining in her private room that night, and he was sitting on the edge of the bed, awaiting her arrival.Dressed in his breeches and a white tunic and nothing more, he stood to meet her at the door as soon as she entered. Kit took the time to lock it and then hurried toward his open arms. “You have no need to redeem yourself,” she said, leaning up to find his lips, but she knew what he was referring to. The last time they’d been together, he hadn’t quite satisfied her before he finished for himself. She was secretly hopeful things would turn out differently this time.Jate’s hands tugged at the pins that held her hair, and Kit released him only long enough to help remove them. Her dark curls tumbled around her shoulders as his lips devoured her neck, one hand moving back to her waist

Chapter 139

The labyrinth maze had been a tradition in every Choosing as far back as anyone could remember. Kit’s grandmother, Junno, liked to tell the story of how her own great-grandmother had been kissed in the labyrinth by her great-grandfather, that it was that day, during her Choosing, Queen Wyn had known that Luf was the one for her. Likewise, Junno said she had been kissed by Kit’s deceased grandfather, Nalt, for the first time during her maze run. Rona had never been caught during her own labyrinth run, so no one had kissed her. Kit hadn’t been surprised to hear that; her mother probably cheated somehow or threw elbows at anyone close enough to rein her in.The maze itself was a vast structure situated a few leagues away from the castle. It’s upkeep was critical to the queen, though the labyrinth was only used during royal Choosings and from time to time whenever the queen wanted to throw an elaborate party and let her friends run through it. Kit had seen

Chapter 140

The queen finally decided to make her appearance. The trumpeters blasted out a few notes to let everyone know the doors to the carriage would be opening, and since Kit was standing directly in front of them, she braced herself against the obnoxious noise. She thought, when she was queen, she would have a nice violin ensemble to announce her presence rather than lambasting everyone with a trumpet blow to the face.Rona stepped out, followed by Junno, who, much to Kit’s amusement, was wearing one of the gowns from the neighboring realm. The Queen Mother had a large smile on her face, and she came over to stand with Kit and the other ladies who would be taking part in the maze run, as did several other noblewomen Kit knew from her mother’s circle. None of the other councilwomen joined them, only Junno, who squeezed her way in next to her granddaughter and gripped Kit’s hand with a giggle. So many questions danced through Kit’s head, but she’d have t
