Chapter 101

The rain that had begun to fall soon after the hunt was over didn’t let up for the next several days. While Kit was thankful that it gave her the opportunity to get to know the Representatives a little better inside of the castle where they were less spread out and easier to access in groups, by the fourth day of torrential downpours, she was beginning to feel a little cooped up.She was also frustrated with her search for more information about the house in the woods. Having already asked every person she could think of that she even remotely trusted and been turned away with either a response that they didn’t even know what house she spoke of or no answer whatsoever, Kit was aware there was more to the tale than others were letting on. Even her own beloved grandmother, the Queen Mother, wouldn’t speak of the place. When Kit snuck to her room one afternoon, aware that her mother’s guards would notice but hopeful that they wouldn’t alert the quee

Chapter 102

The sound of footsteps had Kit turning her head. At first, she’d hoped it was Eli, come to find her amidst her books again, but when she saw it was Pierce, she tried not to look too disappointed. In the past few days, she’d been doing her best to find interest with him. He was nice looking, intelligent, and from what she could tell, a good fellow to have around when one needed information. But despite her best efforts, seeing him didn’t cause her heart to soar the way it did when her eyes fell on some of the others.“Ah, there you are, Princess,” the blond said with a smile. “I have been searching for you.” He pursed his lips together in a quirky grin.“Good afternoon, Pierce. How are you today?”“Good, good,” he replied coming to a halt next to her. “I have found out some information I thought you might want to know.”Kit’s ears perked up, and she sat a little straighter.

Chapter 103

The morning meal was generally a time when Kit sat next to her mother and listened to her blather on about items that were unimportant to the princess, or if they were dining with the Representatives, as they were the morning after Kit’s encounter with Pierce in the library, she would go down the tables and make comments about each of the men, usually loud enough that any of them sitting near enough could hear. Queen Rona didn’t care. If she was lucky, the queen would leave quickly enough for Kit to finish her food in piece and then spend a few minutes bouncing from table to table to say good morning to the Representatives, often leaving with one or more of them for a bit for a private conversation.Today, however, Kit could only focus on one thing; the rain had stopped. It was the first thought that entered her mind upon sitting up in bed, and now, with her mother continuing to talk about who looked well put together and who looked like he may have gotten out of

Chapter 104

Pierce chatted about the meal as they walked, and Kit wished he’d walk faster or stop talking. The scones were the same as they always were, and no, she didn’t think the eggs were a tad undercooked this morning. By the time they were in the library, she felt like she’d been walking for a mile, and maybe she had.He led her to the back corner, away from the door, and prickles stood up on her arms as she thought about what it might be he was about to tell her. What if he truly had solved her mystery? She knew, whatever the history of the house, the story had to be enticing.“Well, I was able to contact a few of my sources within the castle yesterday, Princess. Discretely, of course.” He smiled at her, and Kit nodded, thinking that would be reply enough for him to continue. He didn’t. “Yes, yes? And?”“And... it seems the woods aren’t enchanting at all. In fact, there’s truly nothing interesti

Chapter 105

The skies opened up about the time Kit found herself in the clearing near the house. She’d almost made it to the safety of the trees in front of the porch before the deluge began, but climbing down from Snowduster and securing him to a tree in a location where he had a bit of shelter hadn’t done much to keep her dry. She ran for the porch with a drenched, muddy gown, no way of getting back on the horse where she’d left him, and the sweet smell of freedom in her lungs. It wouldn’t last, and she knew that. But for now, she’d managed to escape the castle without any of her guards and found herself standing in the foyer of the house that had been beckoning her for years. She realized she’d had countless dreams of this place, besides just the day to day wanderings she often found herself trapped in. Now, being here for the first time alone, she was apprehensive about the entire situation but decided to see what she could find out on her own. The

Chapter 106

Kit swallowed hard, forcing her eyes to leave the word and travel to Eli’s face. He was standing on the side of the fireplace, looking at her, his expression a mixture of regret, sorrow, anxiety, and perhaps a tinge of relief at finally having his secret revealed. Kit said nothing, only waited, certain an explanation would come.Eli ran the tip of his tongue along his bottom lip and thought for a moment before he finally said, “I wanted to tell you, but I wasn’t allowed to. I’m still not allowed to. If your mother finds out that you know, particularly that I’m the one who told you, she will find a way to end me. You should know that. You can’t tell anyone I’m letting you know, Kit. No one. Not even Cassius.”Kit’s head bobbed up and down, and for a moment she thought it odd that Cassius of all people had become her greatest confident, not Avinia or Isla. But then, she had stolen his horse, so perhaps there was logic

Chapter 107

A lump formed in Kit’s throat. The idea that this accomplished young man, one who’d won many awards for bravery in battle, who had led men, who commanded her guard, was ordered into such a demeaning role by her own mother made her both melancholy and outraged at the same time. Eventually, she managed to say, “You’ve certainly done much more than that.”He made a small sound in the back of his throat and the trace of a smile pulled at the corners of his mouth before it disappeared. “Thanks to you.”“Me?” Kit leaned back in the chair, surprised to hear him say that. “Whatever do you mean? I did nothing.”“You did everything, Kit. You inspired me. You always said I could be whatever I wanted to. You convinced me to try for the army; you chose me to be commander of your guard. Yes, Kit, all that I’ve accomplished, I’ve done so because of you.”“While I thank you fo

Chapter 108

“Kit, calm down!” Eli insisted. He reached for her, but she dodged him, suddenly not wanting to have his hands on her. He slipped himself back inside of his breeches. “Kit, take some deep breaths!”“No!” she screamed at him, folding her knees up in front of her chest protectively. She knew he had no intention of hurting her or forcing something she didn’t want, but the idea that he’d been inside of her before, all those years ago, and never told her, seemed like a betrayal of a sort she could never even put words to. “Why didn’t you tell me?”“I couldn’t!” he shouted back at her, standing and reaching across to the chair to the blanket she’d been using. He handed it to her, and Kit covered herself, realizing that she was becoming slightly calmer, despite the initial shock of what she’d discovered. Eli walked to the fireplace and threw in the sheath. He rested one hand on the

Chapter 109

The rain had let up for a little while a few hours ago, but now, as Cassius stood in the hallway near the door that led to the barn and Kit’s favorite garden, it was pouring again. At least there was no lightning or thunder this time. He prayed, wherever she was, she was safe. He’d been in the Representative’s room that morning, visiting with several of the other men, when his liegeman had come to tell him Snowduster was missing. Ral had said that, during a break in the rain, he’d gone out to the barn to check on him, and the steed was gone. The stable boys assured him there was nothing to worry about, but they wouldn’t tell him who had taken the prize stallion.Cassius had run out to see for himself, and when he noticed a few other boys washing off Belle’s hooves, he had an idea what had happened. He would’ve ridden after her if he hadn’t also noticed Aeros’s stall was empty. So... wherever the fair lady who had ab

Chapter 110

Queen Rona walked at least fifteen steps ahead of Kit the entire distance to her throne room, which was so far away from her own chambers, Kit always felt like she was in a parade or taking a constitutional by the time she got there. Her mother turned down a side hallway headed for her private throne room, which was less intimidating than the larger one she used for visiting dignitaries and other important events, like meting out justice. The smaller room was more intimate but just as highly decorated, and Kit was slightly embarrassed to be dripping rain water all over the red carpet. Her mother took a seat on her throne, waving her hand at the guards, who closed the doors behind them, and Kit lowered her head, waiting patiently for her mother to give the signal that she may rise. After thrusting her ring in front of her daughter’s face, letting Kit kiss it, and then taking several more beats of silence just for her own amusement, Rona said, “Rise, daughter.&rdquo
