Meeting the Elders Round Two

After lunch, they got ready for the meeting with the council of elders. While they walked over to the council’s meeting hall, Chris turned to Brian. “Is it me, or do you feel like we’ve done this before?”             Brian gave him an exhausted look. “Really? That wasn’t funny, it was sad. If it doesn’t turn out the same. Because I don’t want to feel like that or be talked down like that ever again. Let’s get our apology and find out where this blasted witch is. I want to know exactly what’s going on, and I think she has some answers.”             “You don’t want to do that again. Try being the one attempting to talk both of you down. Ugh, as for the witch issue. I’m worried because the council shouldn’t have a problem bringing her forward. So, if they can&rsqu

A Shared Space

“Davis, my apartment’s empty. Where’s my stuff?” Jillian just wanted to change out of her uniform and relax. Her life felt like it was a deck of cards someone used to play fifty-two pickup with and she wasn’t taking it well.             “Where it all belongs. Come on.” He was back to that again, Jillian figured. If he couldn’t persuade someone to change his way of thinking, then he turned to tell them how he saw the world in statements. Davis made his way toward his apartment. Jillian wondered if she’d grind her teeth down before she bit him. Gods, she’d already done that!             “You got in all moved that fast in just the last few hours?” Now she worried about her Knick knacks and such. Did he just th

Reordering the Power Structure

Silence reigned supreme in the meeting room. “Now, Elder Thomas. As you vouched for the witch and claimed her as blood. How are we to interpret your views and actions in this matter? How are we to believe that she pulled the wool over your eyes and acted alone in this? You may now explain briefly now, and the rest can go into the report.” Chris and Brian truly acted as one. They fed off each other’s words as if they came from one person. Each adding a layer to the conversation. Helena stood back and watched because they didn’t need anyone interrupting them or a cheerleader.             “I didn’t know. My brother mated with a witch. She was the only child to take after her mother. I believed everything was fine. I knew nothing about any problems within the family. My brother kept his daughter’s rebellion

New Positions, New Responsibilities

“Okay, I’m bored. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing for Helena and she’s not here to explain it to me.” Jillian leaned against Davis’ desk as he sat there typing out something on the laptop in front of him.             “You’re basically her beta. Do beta stuff for her. You’re the one that must make sure what she wants done is done right. Point out stuff she’s missing and figure out how to make things happen to her. Problem solve.” He didn’t stop typing or even look up at her. She wanted to pout at this.             “Do you always have an answer?” She was only a little irritated that he was busy, and she didn’t have a clue what she was supposed to do.

Through the Looking Glass

Nathan couldn’t believe his greed suckered him into this position. Now not only was Asia trapped here, but so was he. He stood at the entrance to the underground bunker where Clarence forced the women to live and watched the guards change again. They were running this place on minimal people now. The fences and guards were there as much to keep others out as those inside in. Worse than that, Clarence held fight nights when he got bored and anyone who displeased him found themselves forced to take part in the fights. He was blind to the fact that he was losing men as they bled out onto the fighting arena floor.             Clarence figured the fights cut the weakness from his pack, and only the strongest deserved to be in it. That logic only worked if you possessed an unlimited supply of potential members. But the Blue Mountain Pack didn&r

When You Call it a Day

“That’s it. No more. We are calling it a day. Let’s go relax before bed.” Chris was getting more and more agitated after dinner. They tried to work, but the two men knew it was useless. With their mate in heat was a challenge of strength and will to get anything done. No amount of touching or kissing could hold back the need to satisfy her. Other men in the vicinity were not an option. Josh and Wally knew enough to make themselves scarce. Calling in with updates and requesting their opinion or what their wishes were. Technology made this possible and the life of an unmated male safer.  Brian was calmer but still showed the signs of being stressed. Helena found herself fed up with their sniping and growling at each other. After all, she lived in her body and knew very well what

Work Life Balance

With the day drawing to a close. Jillian still didn’t get a meeting with Helena. She’s not available right now, and all Jillian could think was that Helena had it too good. She’d been fielding calls and doing her best to get all the details down without pissing off the people on the other end of the calls. From stopped-up sinks to questions about getting a toddler into school next year. Permission for a teen to go to normal high school and receive notification of someone having lost their job. Jillian didn’t know what to do with half of the requests, and they’d need to wait until Helena could answer them. Davis just shrugged when she tried to talk to him about it. Josh and Wally only said that wasn’t in their job description. She wanted to quit. How did one quit without losing their best friend?             Dav

Strategy Session

“Alright, we need something to put to the other packs on how this alpha summit will go.” Helena lay there on the sofa the next afternoon pondering the future, now that her heat was winding down. Chris lay with her, and Brian poked at files he’d brought up that morning to look at and finalize a more solid plan as he described it.             “What do we have? Eight alphas plus their entourage, ranging from four to ten people. That’s a few too many people to put up with. Somewhere between 30 and 80. I doubt they will all fit into the packhouse.” Brian said back as he flipped pages from where he perched on the coffee table.             “Well, not without them bunking down together, that is. Which might not be a bad idea. They would feel sa

Plots Abound

Nathan found Asia off in the dark corner. She preferred to hide herself from prying eyes. Being a bitten wolf rather than blood born. Within this pack and many others, considered her a perversion to the species or a different species altogether. Nathan believed it was the height of hypocrisy because most of the wolves of North America were from stock that started with a bitten wolf. It’s half the reason their packs ended up here. They weren’t welcome back then in the European packs. In fact, many of those packs killed bitten wolves outright to maintain the pureblood. Of course, as science grew, an understanding of genetics developed, and shifters sometimes learned fresh blood through mating and the bite helped the species survive. Now only a few packs treated bitten wolves like this. But this was his mate, and it irked him they treated anyone like this.      &nb

Regroup

Finally, Jillian gets to see her friend in a meeting about everything that’s changed. Sadly, it wasn’t a social visit. No, it’s a staff meeting. A meeting that’s looking more like a military command strike meeting than an everyday pack meeting. In fact, pack meetings always were impromptu affairs that people could come and go because gossip could easily fill in the missing pieces. But not now. Now they sat about taking notes and trying to understand how everything was shifting under their feet. Jillian felt like she was on a sinking ship, and it was tilting under her feet as Brian talked about where they were going to put which group. He even showed them a map. It all reminded her of those movies where they are planning a big wedding reception and trying to avoid any wedding guest drama by correct placement of the relatives. But in this case, they were attempting not to have any territor
