Chapter 20

It was easier to tell a stranger the things that plagued you at night. You didn’t know how they would react. They might not judge you the way your friend would. Lindsey had found the perfect stranger. Now to find a guy called Dylan in Hollow Cove.‘I don’t think Jordan will want to speak to us for a while.’ Serge said when they were both in the car.‘She’ll come around when it all sinks in.’‘Are you going to the police.’‘I kind of want to check it out myself first.’Serge ran a hand down his face. ‘You’re not going to investigate a missing person’s case Lindsey. You almost got kidnapped. This is a good lead, give it to the police.’‘I will, after I check him out first.’Serge leaned back and stared at Lindsey who in turn grinned at him.‘Will you help?’‘Of course, I will. First I want t

Chapter 21

‘Do you think we should tell Jordan and Gloria about the plan?’ Ruby asked, when the car stopped in front of Lindsey’s house. Jordan wouldn’t be happy she went behind her back. Still she deserved to know. She would want to be in on the operation as well. ‘I’ll tell Jordan. She’ll be pissed, but I know she’ll want in.’ Ruby nodded, ‘You’re right. Will you keep me posted?’ ‘Of course. Thanks for your help.’ Ruby smiled. ‘I hope she’s okay.’ Lindsey hopped out of the car and watched as Ruby drove off. The sun shined on her face as it slowly said goodbye. Hollow Cove woods which had been abandoned by the police and rescue workers beckoned her. It was as if now that everyone was gone it was ready to reveal its secrets. Instead, Lindsey looked ahead to the house slowly filling up with people and driveway with cars. Her parents white truck was parked at home. ‘They’ve started early.’ Lindsey murmured. Orange blended in

It was four in the morning in the morning, but Lindsey walked into her closet and dialed Dylan’s number. ‘What do you mean Leah was there?’ It sounded like Dylan crumbled a piece of paper against the speaker. ‘I saw her I tried to speak to her. She freaked out.’ ‘What did she look like? What happened after?’ ‘She… looked awful. She’s definitely under the influence of something. She took what Dean had a ran off. I heard a car drive off, but I didn’t see it.’ ‘Someone’s aiding her! It could be the guy who tried to grab me in the woods.’ Dylan exhaled on the other end. ‘Lindsey, I think we should go to the police.’ She nodded. Lindsey clenched the front of her shirt. It was the right thing to do. They had a chance to bring Leah home even if Lindsey wasn’t sure where home was. ‘What about your brother?’ ‘Dean… he’s got to get his shit together. I don’t know, but I can’t keep quiet anymore.’ ‘

‘The police?’ Lindsey stood at the same time as Clem.‘You think mom and dad called them?’ Clem asked.‘I don’t know. We agreed to go to the station later.’‘Lindsey!’ Her dad called.‘Well, then come on.’ Clem shoved her towards the door.Did they know something she didn’t? Had there been another siting of Leah? Now that she thought about it, if Dylan was truthful about Leah freaking out there should have been witnesses to it. Someone must have seen the car drive off. It was close to midnight, though, there had to be at least one night owl to bear witness.Lindsey and Clem rushed downstairs to find Detective Luther and his partner Harry standing with her hands on her waists.‘Lindsey, care to explain why a young man claimed you were supposed to meet him at the station to discuss Leah’s case? Where did you even meet him?’ Luther asked. He was ext

‘Lindsey! Where the hell are you?’ Clem dialed her number, but it rang and rang until it went to her voicemail. ‘She was here a moment ago.’ Clem said to himself. Sirens blared in the distance, announcing the detective’s arrival. The single police car was followed by a black SUV. Clem didn’t know them. His parents said the meeting had been a hoax and they were on their way home.   Clem’s palms started to sweat. Not even a car lined the street much less a curly haired teenager. Luther Montgomery and his partner Harry burst out of their vehicles. A late to the party ambulance sounded up the road. That was what prompted the neighbors to burst out of their homes. Jordan was the one behind the wheel of the black SUV. ‘Where is she? Where’s Leah?’ Jordan burst onto the grass and up to Clem. ‘I don’t know, now I can’t find Lindsey.’ Sweat formed on Clem’s brow. She couldn’t have just vanished. He was inside for barely

‘Leah honey, I brought you a surprise!’ Cami giggled and squeezed Lindsey’s shoulders.Leah gawked at Lindsey before landing on the bed causing the springs of the old bed to moan.‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’ Leah groaned.‘No, this is insane. Or I’m dreaming but this isn’t happening. Where’s the other girl that’s supposed to be Leah, who is she?’ Lindsey blasted.‘Oh Libby’s probably washing up.’ Cami said.‘Libby?’ Lindsey asked. The door opposite the room opened and a tall slender girl walked out. There was no remnant of the girl with matted hair and jaded eyes.  Her ugly cardigan was gone probably never to be worn again. Her curls had bounced back from their terrible matted state and had been tamed into a wet bun on top of her head. Her long legs showed memories of old scars and pictures of new ones. She walked the s

‘Dinner’s almost ready. You’ll have to eat in your room tonight girls. Just for today, don’t worry.’ Cami said, as she stood. She caressed Libby’s arm on her way out. Libby turned to leave but Lindsey called her back. ‘Libby, you can’t seriously be okay with this.’ Lindsey hissed. Libby dipped her head and rolled her eyes, her eyes livelier than they’ve ever been since Lindsey met her. ‘Home, family? I don’t see what’s so bad about it.’ ‘Kidnapping, criminals, jail! Everything that is horrible!’ Leah burst out. Libby scrawled, ‘No one’s going to jail. Mom isn’t doing anything wrong.’ Lindsey cringed at the word mom. How long had they been together to be so close for Libby to even be calling Cami mom? ‘She’s locked us up. People are going to come looking…’ ‘You’re the ones that are going to ruin everything.’ Libby snapped, cutting Lindsey off. Lindsey shrunk back. Libby scrawled at them before she slammed the doo

‘Does it look like there’s any indentations?’ Serge asked Marco. The drone had just finished surveying the entire forest which took it a good thirty minutes.‘Yeah, bro looks like some underground shafts.’ Marco said.‘They couldn’t be living underground.’ Clem said.‘Totally possible. There are just too many of them.’ Marco said.‘We’ll need a massive search party,’ Jordan sighed. Jordan peered over Marco’s screen and saw the entire forest mapped out.‘So, we have a chance?’ Jordan asked, hope burned in her soul for the first time in months.‘Yeah, but we better act quickly in case they move on.’ Serge said.‘You want a copy to give to the police?’ Marco asked.Serge nodded. ‘Yes, and a personal one. I want to explore the woods too.’Marco pulled out a flash drive and handed it out to his cousin. ‘Good luck bro.’***‘A new day girls. It’ll be a long day of driving too.’ Cami said from outside the door.Lindsey stared at Leah who stared back.‘It’ll be okay.’ Lindsey said.‘I hope so

“What were you thinking?!” Leah blasted.“I froze.” Libby said.“Ugh, clearly.” Leah snapped.“Come on guys, we have to find a way out of here. They’re right behind us.” Lindsey stood, her hand still gripping Libby’s wrist. It felt worse than a maze at night.Leah swallowed, “How? We’re trapped by a bunch of trees.”“Libby… you’ve been in these woods the longest. Where do we go.”“I-I… I think we follow the little footpath. Yes, we have to find it. The boney stems on the thousand trees holding them hostage were bar
