Chapter 61

I fought to lock inside the sobs that threatened to overwhelm me. Bronze shadows snaked around my head in the Justice Chamber, trapping inside my jerremy just the same as my tears. Why had I traveled back to Oxford to answer my aunt’s text? I’d thought that all I’d have to do would be Claim an Alpha, then magically I’d become the Wolve Winner destined by the House of Heights. Instead, I’d wound up condemned as a rebel and facing execution.I stared between the three silent wolve masks, as the judge, jury, and executioner sat on their furry thrones. These were the sorcereses who long ago, I’d hoped would welcome me into their covens. Later, when no engraved letter, talking broomstick, telepathic black cat or however I’d figured it’d work, arrived to call me away from my uncle’s non-magical world, I’d dreamed of being left alone to carve out my own life. But Isabella’

Chapter 62

The Claiming Suite in the House of Seasons was a grand bedroom with imposing vases and desks, which was painted in murals and dominated by a four-poster bed, which was decorated with twisting metallic roses like it wasn’t symbolism for romance being dead. I mean, it would’ve been dominated by the bed, if the Soon to be king of the Alphas hadn’t been chained — naked — with his arms above his head to one of the posts. When I closed the door behind me, ready to collapse in exhaustion and finally sleep after Isabella had lectured me for hours alone in the privacy of her room until it honestly couldn’t have been any clearer that she’d meant it that I had to prove myself worthy, I’d turned, only to discover King tied to my bed. I couldn’t help the small smile that built as I stared at his muscled chest, fascinated by the butterfly tattoo, whose vast wings beat over his

Chapter 63

I looked with widened eyes through the one-way mirror, when my jerremy snapped angrily at the glbutt, at the lab in which Moon was being trained by Jason and Alex like the Blood twins had paired up again fresh from my nightmares. Was this mirror here so that the sorcereses could watch the breaking of a werewolve like it was part of the curriculum? When King and I had first sneaked from the Claiming Suite through the silent House of Seasons, when my heart had thundered in my chest and I’d jumped at every shadow because I had to free my Charms before my aunt discovered us, I’d hidden, expecting that Jason would be able to spy us through the other side of the glbutt. King’s mouth had tightened, however, as he’d waved me forward. “We have the same schooling rooms in my empire for difficult Alphas to be displayed to the Alpha Academy. Amusing, wouldn’t you say, that your aunt and my

Chapter 64

I rested my head against the corridor’s mahogany paneled wall outside the library, sinking into the sensation of being home. The sweet scent of honeysuckle wound through the open window out over the formal gardens that were kissed with the early morning’s light. How hadn’t I noticed just how beautiful it was? The House of Heights had been my grand inheritance, duty, and responsibility, but for a decade, it hadn’t felt like somewhere I knew or was safe. Yet after returning from my aunt’s and strengthening the wards against her, at last this mansion felt like it belonged to me, rather than to her. When Isabella had first begged me to come and stay with her instead, I’d told her that: The House of Heights was mine, and I wasn’t a kid anymore. Finally, that no longer felt like a lie.I rubbed at the garnet ring, which sat heavy on my finger. I was only as free as a felon on day

Chapter 65

I ran through the mansion, which was blurred by my tears. Doubling over with sobs, I clutched onto the stone bust of my ancestor who would’ve rejoiced rather than wailed over the death of a mage. My fingers ghost trailed through the dust. My shadows billowed around me in distressed waves down the staircase and around the chandelier, until the light became filtered to a hellish red. Anthony had insisted that he carry Mischief to his attic, rather than my bedroom. Mischief still hadn’t woken up. I could only allow myself to think that he was asleep and not, you know, something worse. It’d hurt not to have him close to me in my own room. How had I ever slung his unicorn butt into a cage? Then Anthony had settled Mischief into the nest of pillows and blankets. Mischief must’ve taken the bedding for Anthony from the rest of the house because when I’d first discovered the Addict angel in the att

Chapter 66

The sun boiled down from a summer’s sky that wavered with heat at the back of the House of Blood. I scrunched my nose against the sharp pain of a mosquito’s bite on my throat. When I slapped my hand down to swat the mosquito, then peered at the palm, it was scarlet with the fat parasite’s stolen blood. It felt wrong to be searching for a killer under such bright light, rather than the rays of the moon. I shivered, even though I was sweating underneath my mother’s cape, which I just couldn’t give up yet. I hunched my shoulders, as I peeked at the towering back gates of the House of Blood that were carved with orbiting planets. My shadows reached out to trace over the carvings, before shying away at the taste of coppery blood magic. Selena was a professor at Oxford and the spires of her college loomed beyond her Tudor mansion. What would the non-magical students think if t

Chapter 67

Blood-red light bled through the stained glbutt window of Mars, bathing the stone walls of Cosmos Tower in an alien dawn. I eyed Selena warily, as she leaned against the window, staring down at the college’s quad below like I wasn’t dripping cooling blood just across from her Carrie style, when my three wolves knelt at my feet leashed and muzzled with vines. It’d been part of the plan to be got, but boy, had I underestimated the creativity of the coven’s alarm system. Cosmos Tower was the highest point of the House of Blood. I remembered hearing my mother chatting about the beauty of the stained glbutt and the way that the roof sparkled as if with true stars but that I couldn’t go in yet because it was where she did her grownup work. Honestly, she couldn’t have made me want to peek inside more, if she’d told me that the walls had been made out of chocolate and it’d been stuffed

Chapter 68

I pressed my ear to the door in Jason’s bedroom (I’d been given her chamber during my stay in the House of Blood), which adjoined with Alex’s, when my heart thudded with the guilt of eavesdropping on my fiancé. I was meant to be sleeping, but instead, a whistling sound that called to my magic had pulled me to this door. My shadows traced over the ornate heights, shuddering with the unexpected vibrations that moved Alex’s room, when I listened to the whisper of the wind that wound through the cracks.Hexes and hocus pocus, what was happening in his room? Was Alex like some damsel in a fairy tale, bound in a turret without walls and open to the cruel night winds? I looked at around at Jason’s opulent bedroom. The walls were hung with enough white fur pelts to have made up a whole clbutt of murdered Alphas. I grimaced, even as my toes wriggled into the warmth of a wolve f

Chapter 69

My three Charms and Alex knelt in the middle of Cosmos tower with their blond heads bowed. It reminded me of my first day back in Oxford, when I’d walked down the rank of kneeling Alphas in the Training Center. I’d been turned on and excited then, seeing no more than sinfully hot guys that I could choose to control as my own. Pinned now against the stained glbutt window of Mars and pooled in its blood-red light by bronze shadows that trapped my own ones, however, I’d learned my lesson about the danger of controlling anyone. Only perfect Alphas, the sign had read. Yet by choosing the REJECT, I’d picked the soon to be king. I squirmed, cracking back against the glbutt, when my shoulders ached. When I couldn’t break the shadows’ hold, I growled in frustration.Wolves might’ve murdered my parents, but sorcereses were abou

Chapter 70

In the blackness, I clung to King, wrapping my legs around his waist like we were in a seriously adventurous sex position. Instead, we were shivering at the bottom of the narrow stone Sorcereses Well (which I refused to even think was for the Unworthy), which crushed us together in a cruel parody of a lovers’ embrace. Although, if I had to be trapped down a well with someone, King was now top of my list because of his strong arms and the way that he licked and nuzzled at my throat to distract me from the gnawing hunger and thirst. The only guy that could’ve knocked King off the top spot was Moon because his cuddles were kind of addictive…like toasted marshmallow lattes.Trust me, addictive. Except, it hurt to think of Moon, when I rested my arms around King’s throat in the dark, when I didn’t know whether Lyall was hurting him. It was equally painful to think of wha
