Chapter One: The One With A Cheating Girlfriend and Childhood Memories

Life didn’t go his way. Anton sighed as he slumped on the bench at the waiting shed. His hiking backpack was finally put to use as he placed all of his belongings in one go. Regrettably, he left his bank card at his old apartment. His stomach growled profusely and the woman next to him looked at him with her judging eyes as she proceeded to scoot a bit farther from him.    He couldn’t blame her. He probably reeked of sweat and dirt since the last time he showered and Anton wasn’t sure to swallow his pride and beg his former teammates for a place to crash… or just a spare cash for food.   You could say, he’s homeless now. Two weeks after he left the apartment, he blocked all contacts from his friends and girlfriend. Girlfriend, huh? He smile

Chapter Two: The One With Dreams and Rules

“Are you really leaving, Fin?” Twelve year old Anton looked glum as his eyes staring absent-mindedly at his two feet.   “Can’t help it.” Fin shrugged as he threw the football towards Anton who caught it perfectly. “I mean my family’s happy after dad got a promotion.”   “You know, it’s not fair!” Anton exclaimed as he threw the ball back. “You are homeschooled so we never get the chance to create our own football team.”   “It’s all about bad timing, Anton,” Fin said, nonchalantly and threw it back to him.   “Well, it won’t be the same, Fin. Football doesn’t feel fun anymore without you.” A ball back to Fin.

Chapter Three: The One With Finding A Job and Glaring Eyes

“Hey, the fuck did you do with my clothes?”    Anton didn’t need to look to know that once again, he had pissed off his roommate. As a matter of fact, his eyes were fixated with feeding Bessie as the golden retriever munched the last piece of doggie treats without a care. He wished he could at least trade places with Bessie even for a day.   “They’re in the washing machine and they’re about to be done.” At least she should say thank you. But any retorts coming from him might end him up on the streets again. No way he would experience that again.   Dark brown eyes narrowed as her lips curved into a scowl. Her long wavy hair was tied in a bun and she was wearing her red satin nightgown. He hadn’t noticed her glasses were placed on top of her head and he mentally slapped h

Chapter Four: The One With The Suit And Teenage Girls

“And that’s how you know the difference between cubic zirconia and genuine diamonds.” Blaire finally ended her explanation and looked to be surprised yet again to see Anton diligently taking down notes about gemstones.    He was wearing a pair of fake glasses. Although he claimed to have a perfect vision, he decided to wear them to look smart for her lectures.   She didn’t want to stereotype people but she always thought that jocks like him could get easily bored with this kind of lecture.   “It’s strange that a fake gem looked so identical to the real deal yet it seemed so flawless.”   “There is a reason why a flawed gem is more priceless than homegrown ones,” she said. “Anyway, that’s basically

Chapter Five The One with Late Nights and An Unexpected Call

Anton was always a light sleeper. Maybe because when he was at home, he needed to be a good older brother. Since his parents were often late, he had to cook and clean the house and sometimes he woke up from the sound of his baby sister’s cries and he had to sing or tell stories to put her to sleep.  Those were peaceful times despite his hectic schedule.  When he lived on the streets, he couldn’t sleep well. He was often worried about getting mugged or being arrested by the police.  The first time he had a deep sleep was when he arrived at Fin’s place. And he thought he could finally get enough sleep.

Chapter Six: The One With A Serious Talk At The Diner

Before entering the university, Blaire was actually a lonely child in high school. Her high school life revolved around the ridiculous timetable made by her overbearing parents. Like any Asian-American living in Ah-Mur-Rica (which she made a habit of imitating Anton’s mockery of it), she had to suck it up while promising them straight A’s.    She wondered why Anton’s parents were so different. From the way he told her, his parents granted him and his other five siblings their independence. Admittedly, she was envious of Anton despite his circumstances. The first adult who treated her like an equal was her own boss. Although Fin Naese may have looked like a hot-headed teenage rebel, when it comes to work, Fin always looked dependable. And she was g

Chapter Seven: The One With Anton and Mikey

When Mikey first met Anton, it was in highschool. It was at the cafeteria when he caught students whispering all over. He and his nerdy friend, Eric, were still freshmen then. Anton was begging Eric to join the football club while Eric was showing his complete annoyance. They were in their own world and most probably clueless of the eyes set on them. In Eric's case, he probably noticed since his eyes were clearly observing in his way. Even though he managed to get into their school with a full sports scholarship, he was the center of attention. Taller than most Asian guys and to some degree, Caucasians, he had a refreshing look that Mikey couldn't comprehend. But he noticed how Anton never remove

Chapter Eight: The One with A Revelation And Awkwardness

Anton didn’t know what to say. A strange sense of deja vu looming over his mind as he stayed there frozen stiff. Many thoughts were all over the place, trying to decipher the situation.   With Melissa, his body moved on its own, assisting him to do the right thing: to get away.    But right now, his body didn’t move but instead, it placed him in a situation he wished he shouldn’t be.   Instead of anger, his feelings at the moment were a mixture of shock, embarrassment and uncertainty.   The man cleared his throat, cutting off the tension in the room. He slowly stood up and fixed his wrinkled dress shirt then turned to her. “Well, it seemed that our time was cut short. If you excuse me.”
