LXI. At the Mountains

The Discerner and the Chief were monsters in the battlefield. There were only a few of their enemies that were left standing. Jin pulled out a small sickle out of a random man who didn't resist. The man willingly embraced death like he had no regrets. On the other hand, Chief Raius was a demon himself. Three lunged at him but with a kick, an elbow to the nose, and a punch to the eyes, he was fearless. The chief then looked at the remaining enemies, silently asking them to attack him. But instead of aimlessly fighting him, they made the right choice. Their enemies ran. It was their third day to be able to defend the Rokohorta mountain again. In the first place, the battle should have not existed had their enemy not proposed to them. “Peace or war?” asked the representative of Hearth. The team that went to humbly seek an audience with them were composed of only two people–the bearer of the white neutral flag and the spokesperson himself. Both of them were half-naked like they were poor

LXII. First Nights

“Jin, will you follow a ridiculous order?” For the first time, the chief was actually asking Jin, his own right hand, that question. If you are the Rigiddin chief, you shouldn’t really bother asking. Both of them were drinking tea inside the Rokohorta Academy. It was a school but if you look at it from afar, it was actually a series of castles. They were just sitting around a wooden table with two cups and a kettle of mountain tea in front of them. It was dark and the torches in the hallway were not enough to fully light where they were. But they were directly beside a window, the moonlight entering and shining upon them like a spotlight. They agreed not to sleep that night to make sure their enemies wouldn’t pull a nasty prank on them. Lady Richi was the one leading the patrol outside. They will follow soon after resting just for a little moment because it is not good to expose the Rokohorta Lady for such a long time outside or else the enemy will take advantage of it. The scene w

LXIII. First Nights (Special Chapter)

Jin felt his anxiety die down. The chief’s presence and touch was a mix of power and comfort like an elder brother’s pat on his younger sibling. “While Ryder basked in the glory of his victories out in the sun for everyone to see, you only sheathed your dagger in the silence of the shadows whenever you won your hidden battles. You clean your blade like nothing happened like what you did to Lord Corzi the Crooked, Lord Alaster the Abusive, Lord Dishorai the Drunkard, and many others.” The chief even knew their names whereas Jin only knew them as the rich criminals who couldn’t be put to justice because of their money. “They were feudal lords who committed numerous sins in our village for the past years. They can’t be put on trial because they have their gold that’s keeping everyone out. As such, they didn’t need Ryder’s kind way of handling criminals. They simply don’t deserve the legal ways of prosecution, as what the city calls. Someone had to deliver the harsh sword of justice o

LXIV. From the Side of the Oppressed

Hearth is still worth fighting for. The words of her sister Mishaela echoed in her thoughts as Maryan looked at the Rokohorta Academy set on the mountain. It was night but the glamorous castle took over the plains where they were with its enormous shadow. ‘How about now, sister? Is Hearth still worth it?’ she thought. Maryan always looked back to when her older sister came home with a golden paper. “I passed! I did it! I’ve been accepted to Hearth!” The two of them lived together in a small apartment room in the city. Their space was so small that it was embarrassing because she was sure their neighbors heard of it. Mishaela never talked about Hearth non-stop. She was beyond admiring it. She became a fanatic of Hearth. That was what Maryan thought of her sister until that fateful night. Maryan overslept at the bus that she had missed her stop. When she got off, she was more than a kilometer away from her destination. She just decided to walk home. After all, it was not her fi

LXV. Maryan

Maryan woke up with her sister Mishaela’s smile fading into the reality of the morning. It was always the same everyday ever since her sister was captured. It was like her consciousness was constantly reminding her of her reason. But something was a little bit different today. After thinking hard last night, she finally decided to embrace everything. Her boss told her not to worry and just focus on her own task. Her assistant advised her to rest even just for a day just for her to breathe and clear her mind out. Even Grey kept in touch with her, reminding her not to be distracted in her pursuit of revenge against the Rigiddin for what they did to her sister for Hearth had a bigger aim. But after reminiscing some memories last night, she was filled with determination to deny her feelings. She gladly welcomed the stress first thing in the morning. She acknowledged her hatred to her enemies and didn’t try to bury it. Maryan was not running away. She will carry out her mission and allow

LXVI. Espionage

''So? Where did you come from? How did you meet with Jaiyo?'' Infiltrating the camp was hard enough but questions like these were harder. ''My family of guerillas received your notice. I simply answered your call. Fortunately, the man with a purple headband who led me here and your attendant recommended you to me,'' Lidon answered as they walked the mountain trail. ''I see.'' She was not to be underestimated, unlike her hired soldiers. Jin and the chief already knew the basic structure of their camp because they flew over them once. He was pretty confident that he could get inside without doing anything not until he saw the entrance. The ones going in and out had some sort of special tattoos on their skin which they were showing to the guards. Jin was at a loss not until he spotted a group. They didn't show any part of their skin but they were accompanied by some sort of leader with a purple headband. It was that leader who let them in. Jin waited for a few nights at most befor

LXVII. The New Army

“The new guerilla army of Hearth.” These people love to label them like they were naming another breed of animal. Hearth was really something else. They waited for five minutes. Ten. Twenty. When they had lost the time that they were waiting, Maryan had sat on a nearby rock, her face bored as she watched Lidon play his dagger in his hand. Lidon caught her staring and made eye contact but she immediately averted her eyes, suddenly interested in the horizon. If Chief Raius would ask him to describe this lady as the commander of Hearth, he would just tell him that she was too young. She might make a good leader but not the position of a commander, especially in a war like this. He felt bad about her sister Mishaela who is imprisoned at the Rigiddin village. If he would make an offer to free her sister in exchange for backing off from the war, would she accept? The sound of shoes crushing grass made Lidon unwrap the cloth around his weapon. “Lidon?” asked Maryan. She didn’t hear it.

LXVIII. The Price

Lidon was still wary of the guerilla army. He had wrapped his dagger to make them think that he had lowered his guard. But since no one was still attacking them, then it is safe to assume that they are safe for now. They led them through the forest until they reached a hanging bridge. In this time, it was unusual to see a wooden bridge when they were living in the age of development. The bridge was just a collection of blocks of wood bound together by rubber ties and twigs. A river with sharp rocks twenty feet spread below. “Let’s go two at a time or else the bridge will break,” the woman with the golden tooth said. That goes without saying. It was as if the bridge was designed to not welcome visitors. As ancient and old-looking the bridge was, the new guerilla army seemed to have no problem with it. Wayl and the woman went ahead first. It was only the two of them but the bridge swayed so much. “That seems scary,” Maryan whispered beside him. “We can’t do anything about it, ca

LXIX. Systems

“When all of this is over, make me the head of the Triad.” Lidon knew he was supposed to be natural. But when he heard Wayl’s demand, he couldn’t help but react and violently look at him. Wayl didn’t notice it because he was so focused on Maryan, waiting expectantly for a good answer. Lidon was confused. He had expected that Wayl will demand something bigger like abolishing the Triad, ruling Khenealm as the number one, bring back the age of terror, and other speculations of his, Wayl was actually considering to retain the Triad? Meaning, they were embracing the very system that pushed them to the darkness? That was something new. He had to take note of this Wayl man. “I believe we can talk about that when you meet our leader.” “I figured.” Wayl didn’t even hide his expression that he was unsatisfied with her answer. “Oh, that’s right,” Wayl added. “I haven’t formally introduced myself yet. I am Wayl Naronn, the last member alive of the old guerilla army.” The name Naronn was alw

LXX. Captivate

“This way, Miss Maryan,” Wayl said as he gestured in front of him where an elevator opened, waiting for them. Maryan followed after him and Lidon was also about to walk when the woman with the golden tooth suddenly appeared in front of him and squared her shoulders. “The tour is exclusive only for her, handsome,” she said and smiled, showing her crooked teeth. “For the meantime, we can go somewhere fun,” she added. Lidon put on the most serious face that he could. He had to go and see this facility for himself. He has to gather as much intel as he can so that when the time comes, they will be prepared. That was basic warfare. Eliminating a threat is always better than making up for the consequences of it. He can even decide if he will destroy the facility right here and right now. But first, he had to absorb information. ‘Observe well and use those keen eyes of yours as well as your divine gift of discernment. Offer your skills to the enemy and do what it takes to make them believ
