31. Her Past

DAHLIA I gasped at his words. The pain and regret he felt was clear in those gorgeous hazel eyes of his. I felt a wave of sadness wash over me for Elizabeth. "Did they ever catch the culprits?" I asked. He shook his head. "She refused to go to the police. They wanted to send the video to her parents and demand a ransom but she told them to send it to me instead. She didn’t want her parents to see that. Her mother is a heart patient, and any stress can be fatal." I frowned. That was understandable, but she could have told the police and kept it confidential. I felt sorry for Elizabeth, however, I couldn't shake the feeling that something didn’t add up. The guilt that consumed Dane was clear. "It wasn’t your fault." I said firmly. "It was, I left her there-" “It wasn’t your fault Dane, you did not leave her there knowing that would happen. You didn’t commit that horrific act against her, they did.” I said firmly.

32. Promises From Long Ago

DANE Elizabeth returned to the living room with wine and two glasses. "After eating all that, do you still have space?" I asked. Dahlia had cooked several dishes and I had to admit she was good in the kitchen. "It’s my birthday." She said, pouring two glasses "I’ve eaten enough." I said and she scoffed. "It’s just a glass, you ate everything else." "The food was good." I remarked. She smiled. "I have to agree. You love my lasagne, right? I’ll make some next time. " "Hmm, it’s edible." "Oh come on Dane! It isn't so bad." She protested, slapping my leg. "So, what did you want to discuss?" I asked, I knew there was something else on her mind. Her smile vanished as she looked at the ground. "Mom and Dad want me to settle down. They keep pushing me to meet someone. I'm terrified. Dane, can you help me?" "What do you want to do? I told you that you need to tell the

33. Opening Up

DAHLIA Sparks. Strong tingling sparks rushed through me when his lips met mine. I gasped as pleasure consumed me. It was the first time we kissed when we weren’t drunk, or in my case, angry. It was consensual and I wanted this. I wrapped my arms around his neck and tugged him closer, trying to remember not to press against his arm. It was everything I could wish for and more. My entire body felt like it had been lit by a tingling sparkler and my core throbbed as his lips caressed mine. A soft moan fell from my lips. He tasted of fine wine mixed with fresh mint. I wanted more, needed more. He deepened the kiss as if understanding what I needed, his lips dominating mine. I didn’t care when I moaned sensually. He was doing things to me, and he had only kissed me. I boldly ran my tongue along his lips, I wanted to taste him. He parted his lips and I slipped my tongue in. Exploring every inch. I felt him groan quietly as he sucked on my tongue. I s

34. In The Dark

DAHLIA "I'm in here!" I called out, panic filling me when I was plunged into darkness. Don’t panic Dahlia. I didn’t bring my phone, I was in here all alone. "Hey!" My voice seemed to fall flat as I made my way through the shelves. Breathe, Dahlia. I reached the door after a while, feeling for the handle. I tried it and pulled hard on it. "Anyone out there?!" I screamed. Why did someone just turn off the light? Obviously, someone was in here if the light was on! "Who’s there?!" I shouted, trying not to let panic consume me. "Hello?!" I banged on the door, ignoring the pain that burned my fists. "Someone! Anybody! Hello?!" Who would hear me? I was in a tiny, windowless room at the back of a huge room. It was almost time for everyone to leave work, no-one would know I was here. Fear and panic began clawing at me and I tried to avoid focusing on it. "Hello?!" My voice broke from all the shouting but I had to carry on. I cou

35. Anguish

DANE After the kiss we shared on Saturday night, I had thought that maybe we were going to go forward from here. I was ready to push aside my own issues and not judge Dahlia for the way other people of her status behaved. But then yesterday she said something was missing from her memory, something that took place twenty-three years ago… Was it coincidental that my aunt was driven to commit suicide or was killed? There were too many coincidences surrounding Dahlia, this house, the timing… I didn’t want to believe it, but how much longer could I ignore the facts? I couldn't take things further, not until I knew the truth. That kiss shouldn’t have happened. I needed to look around the house for clues and then I needed to get out of here. As soon as possible. It was now Monday and Dahlia had left for work. I decided I really needed to look around, the only problem were the staff. Someone or other was always around, but I couldn't waste any more time. When the mor

36. A Child’s Understanding

DAHLIA Three days had passed but Dane refused to talk to me about anything but work. He didn’t even look at me and told his secretary to get any paperwork signed. It hurt that I heard nothing from him. I tried to talk to him once or twice about it, but he shut me down quickly, saying there was work to do and shouldn’t we be focusing on it? I was used to keeping up a good front. To show I'm ok when I wasn’t, so that’s what I did. Pretend I'm ok. I had had a meeting with my lawyer and the first hearing for our divorce was scheduled to take place. I knew it was going to be mentally draining, I did not want to see him again, not when I was emotionally drained - but my lawyer said we were not going to drag it out. After all, there was enough proof of his affairs. "Mama? Can I come with you to work today?" Aria asked. She had been a little under the weather and rather clingy. I knew she was upset about Dane simply leaving without even a goodbye. I felt her

37. Supporting Him

DAHLIA   I opened the box gingerly, slipping my finger under it and flipping it up. I breathed a sigh of relief, seeing it just contained packaging foam peanuts and a few polaroid’s stuck in the middle - I really didn’t want to have to face another dead rat again. I reached for the pictures, scooping them up. I gasped as I felt something tickle my finger. I was about to brush it away when I saw a horrifyingly large spider crawl up my hand, scarily fast. It was two inches long and my heart plummeted. Fear drowning me, I let out a piercing scream, whacking it off. I felt a sharp sting on my hand before it went flying. My heart was thumping wildly as I stumbled back, seeing another crawl out of the box. "Mama!" I heard Aria call. "I'm ok, I just slipped." I lied, backing away from the large atrocities. My hand stung but I was too focused on thinking about how to kill them. Hurrying forward, I crushed the first spider beneath my foot.

38. Poisoned

DAHLIA   My heart would have surged if it wasn’t already beating way faster than it should. "What’s wrong with you? You look really ill." He said. "I need to go to the hospital. I’ll be fine… It’s just a little…." I tried to stand up, my entire body felt heavy. "What happened? You looked better than this earlier." He asked, helping me to my feet. I could only focus on his concern. "A spider bit me." I said, holding out my swollen and painful-looking hand. He looked at me stunned before taking my hand tenderly. "This looks infected… Dahlia what spider?" He asked sharply. "It was in the box…" I mumbled, my vision swaying. "I kept them; I’ll be fine." "You should have gone sooner." He said coldly. "I…" I trailed off. Not wanting to say that it was because I didn’t want to let him down. He seemed to realise anyway, his eyes filling with pain. He now crouched down, wrapping his left arm a

39. Heart To Heart

DAHLIA   I said it, wording the feelings that inflicted and caused a storm within me. I couldn't stop myself. Seeing the worry and concern in him as he held my hand, made me falter. When he told me he’d be there for me, I wanted to believe it. To hope he’d never get angry and leave. I was terrified of having my heart broken again but I was also terrified of losing him. I’d hold on to him for as long as possible, to hope I could win his heart someday. His thick lashed eyes were filled with surprise at my words, before they seemed to darken, and I saw the emotions in them. "I’m sorry for getting angry." His deep voice came. He let go of my hand and instead caressed my hair. Leaning forward, he placed his forehead on mine. My breath hitched and my heart thumped at his closeness. "It’s ok, you had every right-" "No. I didn’t. I didn’t let you speak and left when you needed me. There were other things that were bothering me." H

40. Origami

DAHLIA   I looked at Dane as he sat there, a frown on his face. What did he make of it all? It felt like forever before he stood up from the side of the bed and looked down at me. "Move over." He commanded. My cheeks flushed but I did as he said, my heart racing as I watched him take his shoes off before he slid into the bed next to me. I was sure he’d hear my heart. His closeness was making me go crazy and I dared not look up at him. He slid his arm under my head and gently pulled me into his chest. I closed my eyes, inhaling his scent as I placed my bandaged hand on his chest and curled the other under his arm, placing it on his shoulder. Tingles of pleasure rushed through me and I had to bite my lip to stop from letting out a sigh of pleasure. I could feel every inch of his body against mine, right down to the bulge in his pants. Oh, dear lord, the images and thoughts that were rushing through my head were making my lower region throb
