Chapter ~ 1

The Quietus War Dark grey clouds loomed over Hartland with occasional lightning and thunder strikes yet no rain came down. Something was coming. Something big and terrible.   The Midland warriors sliced their way through corn fields, stomping and crushing mature corn cobs still in their husks. Like ghosts, they creeped up on their prey. Surrounding the entire Hartland kingdom and patiently waiting for their commander's signal to attack their unsuspecting enemies.   In an old wooden two bedroom structure, Adriana lay on a four-poster-bed with a protruding belly, legs wide apart and panting really hard. Her brown skin glistened with sweat as her mother and the midwife encouraged her to push. Despite the unbearable pain, Adriana leaned on her elbows and forced herself to push once more whilst groaning.   "Alright Adriana," Olga, the midwife, spoke. "One more push and the baby will be out." She grabbed a stack of tow

Chapter ~ 2

Seventeen years after the Quietus war. Rakia's POVI took the bow and arrow from Arc's huge hands, fixing the arrow shaft in the nock. Arc was the village bully. The big, egotistic and cocky jerk everyone hated. Even those around him never really liked him. They just pretended to, so he wouldn't taunt them like what he was doing to me right now. This was my time to put him in his place. "Remember Rakia, you only get one shot," Arc said out loud, reminding me of the bet we just made. "Miss this one and you'll have to walk on cow poop... barefooted," he mocked and his friends joined him. I didn't know what came over me. Riley and I were just passing by when we spotted Arc, challenging a bunch of teenagers on the

Chapter ~ 3

Adrian's POV"This procession is a waste of time." What was the point in honouring the death of people who died running away from the enemy instead of fighting them. People like them didn't deserve to be remembered yet alone honoured. "Hush, Adrian," Mother whispered, "This is one of your father's favourite traditions. He says it helps the people appreciate the existence of the boundary." "The boundary isn't important!" I exclaimed. "Grandfather should have done everything within his power to get revenge on the Midlands instead of shielding us from them!" "Enough Adrian!" Father had heard our conversation and was furious. "My father made the best decision ever in the history of Hartland! Because of him, our kingdom has experienced nothing but peace and tranquillity in o

Chapter ~ 4

Rakia's POV "Happy Birthday, dear Rakia. Happy Birthday to you. Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!" The confetti rained down as I cut my birthday cake. Riley and his family were here along with a few of my friends from school to celebrate my birthday. I didn't have much in life, but it felt wonderful to have all these people around. We had just finished with my birthday dinner and I was so stuffed that I didn't think there was space in my tummy for cake. Mother picked up the chocolate-covered cake and cut it into slices. Father brought out the vanilla pudding, cream puffs, apple pie and set them on the table. Marina, Riley's younger sister, cheerfully followed Father with a big round bowl of cherry punch. All of a sudden, she shrieked, tripping over the floor rug. The punch flew out of her

Chapter ~ 5

Rakia's POV   I thought I was dead until I tried moving my hand. My eyelids felt heavy but I made the effort to open them.   A wooden ceiling was the first to fall in my line of vision. I looked to the side. A vase full of flowers and a stack of books sat on a nightstand. On the otherside, the sun showered rays of light through a window whilst the faded curtains danced to the tunes of the wind. Panic coursed through my veins.   This is someone's house! What happened in the woods? And where's Luca?   I tried sitting up but a sharp pain shot through my body from the side. A groan left my mouth and I fell back on the bed.   "Oh, you're awake."   Carefully, I raised my head to see a young girl about the age of nine, standing at the doorway. Her short brown hair hung above her shoulders, working well with her bright blue eyes and rosy cheek

Chapter ~ 6

Back in Hartland, after Rakia's escape.   Adrian's POV   Mother paced back and forth in the throne room, a troubled look gracing her features.   "I don't see what your problem is, Mother," I said, unperturbed with the news of my sister. "You shouldn't be so worried about this girl. She's lived in the village her whole life. She knows nothing about being a Hartland royal."   "Oh, how feeble your mind is, Adrian," she spat. "This girl's existence could pose as a threat to your incoming coronation!"   "Oh, that's just stupid, Mother," I scoffed. "She's a commoner! There's absolutely no way Father will put Hartland in her hands. He'd have to be an idiot to do that!"   The doors burst

Chapter ~ 7

Rakia's POV   It was a day and a half since I escaped from Hartland. Lance practically made me a part of his family, but I feared they wouldn't treat me like one of them if I told them who I really was. So I lied to them about my life, family, friends, basically everything.   Aside that, keeping my powers a secret became a much bigger problem. I had to avoid contact with water anytime they were around.   Last night, just after dinner, I accidentally froze a pot of water Rhoda had just heated up. I could still remember their stunned facial expressions as the family stared at the cold ice, wondering how it happened. Rhoda was the most surprised. It was a miracle that they believed the lie I told them. If my stupid powers acted up again, I was totally done for.   Staying with the family, I

Chapter ~ 8

Adrian's POV Two days had passed since Father made that stupid decision to cancel my coronation because of that filthy street brat. Immediately after the meeting that day, Father ordered the announcers to inform the people. Now all of Hartland knew. Mother and I tried our very best to change his mind, but it wasn't working. He was thick headed as a rock. My plan to terminate Araknee seemed futile. How could I get rid of her when she was a magical boundary away from Hartland? But Mother had already thought of a plan. I didn't know how, but she had found out that twenty out of thirty six council members were against Father's decision. Three of them were currently, the most powerful wizards in Hartland. I sat on the bed she shared with Father in their quarters as she briefed me on the plan

Chapter ~ 9

Rakia's POV Clifford's grip tightened on my arm. "No way, Voight!" Richard unsheathed his sword. "We saw her first." "Finders keepers doesn't work here, pal!" The huge man bellowed. "Now hand her over!" Sensing a fight, the other men stood, grabbing their weapons. My eyes did a quick scan of the place in search of something I could do. Apart from the beer bottles, I considered using as weapons, nothing else was suitable. Behind us sat three huge tankers with taps on the front. Close by, a drunken man staggered to the side, holding a huge axe. Suddenly, an idea clicked in my head. Without wasting a second, I yanked my arm out of Clifford's tight grip and tackled the drunk man to the wooden floor.
