Chapter 9.3 (Part 1)

The Fleming sisters attended the opera later that week. It was the first time they had been inside the ornate structure that was the Opera House; their progress to the box organized for them by their guardian was perforce slow as they gazed about them with interest. Once inside the box itself, in a perfect position in the first tier, their attention was quickly claimed by their fellow opera-goers. The pit below was a teeming sea of heads; the stylish crops of the fashionable young men who took perverse delight in rubbing shoulders with the masses bobbed amid the unkempt locks of the hoi polloi. But it was upon the occupants of the other boxes that the Flemings’ principal interest focused. These quickly filled as the time for the curtain to rise approached. All four were absorbed in nodding and waving to friends and acquaintances as the lights went out.

Chapter 9.3 (Part 2)

Behind Sophia sat Lord Bullock and Mr. Watson, invited by Felix to act as squires for Sophia and Maribella respectively. Neither was particularly interested in the opera, yet both had accepted the invitations with alacrity. Now, they sat, yawning politely behind their hands, waiting for the moment when the curtain would fall and they could be seen by the other attending members of the ton, escorting their exquisite charges through the corridors.    Maribella, too, was fidgety, settling and resettling her pink silk skirts and dropping her fav. She appeared to be trying to scab he boxes in the tier above. Felix smiles. He could have told her that Henry Byron hated opera and had yet to be seen within the portals of Covent Garden.    Lady Hillsborough, dragon-like in puce velvet, sat de

Chapter 9.3 (Part 3)

Once in the corridor, Margaret’s cheeks cooled. They were quickly surrounded by her usual court and Felix, behaving more circumspectly than he ever had before, relinquished her to the throng. Idly, he strolled along the corridors, taking the opportunity to stretch his long legs. He paused here and there to exchange a word with friends but did not stop for long. His preoccupation was not with extending his acquaintance of the ton. His ramblings brought him to the corridor serving the opposite arm of the horseshoe of boxes. The bell summoning the audience to their seats for the next act rang shrilly. Felix was turning to make his way back to his box when a voice hailed him through the crush.    “Your Grace!”    Felix closed his eyes in exasperation, then opened them

Chapter 10.1

Execution of the first phase of the Flemings’ master plot to rescue Antonia and Sir Jack from the machinations of Mrs. Norwood fell to Sophia. An evening concert was selected as the venue most conducive to success. As Sir Jack was tone deaf, enticing him from the real pleasure of listening to the dramatic voice of Señorita Muscariña, the Spanish soprano engaged for the evening, proved easier than Sophia had feared.    Sir Jack was quite content to escort Miss Sophia for a stroll on the balcony, ostensibly to relieve the stuffiness in Miss Fleming’s head. In the company of the rest of the ton, he knew Sophia was pining away and thus, he reasoned, he was safe in her company. That she was one of He more outstanding opulent beauties he had ever set eyes on simply made life more complete. It was rare that he felt at ease with such wom

Chapter 10.2

It took Sophia nearly half an hour to conclude her instructions to Sir Jack. Initially, he had been more than a little reluctant even to discuss such enterprise. But, by dwelling in the depth of Maribella’s need, appealing quite brazenly to poor Sir Jack’s chivalrous instincts, she had finally wrung from him his sworn agreement to the entire plan.    In a mood of definite self-congratulation, she led the way back to the music-room and, stepping over the door sill, all but walked into Daniel Hammington. His hand at her elbow steadied her, but stung by his touch, she abruptly pulled away. Sir Jack, who had not previously met Lord Daniel, stopped in bewilderment, his eyes going from Sophia’s burning face to his lordship’s pale one. Then, Daniel Hammington became aware of his presence. “I’ll return Miss Fleming to her seat.

Chapter 10.3 (Part 1)

The masked ball given by Lady Penhurst was set to be one of the highlights of an early glittering Season. Her ladyship had spared no expense. Her ballroom was draped in white satin and the terraces and trellised walks with the Penhurst House was lavishly endowed were lit by thousands of Greek lanterns. The music of a small orchestra drifted down from the minstrels’ gallery, the notes falling like petals in the gloriously covered heads of the ton. By decree, all the guests wore long dominos, concealing their evening dress, hoods secured over the ladies’ curls to remove even that hint of identity. Fixed masks concealing the upper face were the order, far harder to penetrate than the smaller and often more bizarre hand-held masks, still popular in certain circles for flirtation. By eleven, the Penhurst ball had been accorded the ultimate accolade of being declared a sad crush and her ladyship retired from her position

Chapter 10.3 (Part 2)

Margaret Fleming was heady stuff, but Felix remembered he had a question for her. He drew back to gaze at her as she lay, reclining against the colourful cushions, her eyes unfocused as his long fingers caressed the satin smoothness of her breasts as they had once before in the carriage on the way back from the Adamsons’ ball, with Marian Winford snoring quietly in the corner. “Maggie?”    Margaret struggled to make sense of his voice through the haze of sensation clouding her mind. “Mmm?”    “Sweet Maggie,” he murmured wickedly, watching her efforts. “If you recall, I once asked you if, were I not your guardian, you would permit me to be alone with you. Do you still think, if that was the case, you’d resist?”

Chapter 10.4 (Part 1)

As soon as she felt sufficiently camouflaged from her guardian’s eye by the gorgeously coloured throng, Emma Fleming made her way to the ballroom window further from the door. It was the meeting place Sophia had stipulated where Sir Jack was to await further instructions. He was there, in a dark green domino and a black mask.    Emma gave him her hand. “Good!” The hand holding hers trembled. She peered into the black mask. “You’re not going to let Maribella down, are you?”    To her relief, Sir Jack swallows and shook his head. “No. Of course not. I’ve got my carriage waiting, as Miss Sophia suggested. I wouldn’t dream if deserting Miss Maribella.”

Chapter 10.4 (Part 2)

Kisses were something Emma felt she could handle. Being held securely in Francis’s arm’s was a delight. But when his hand closed gently over her breasts she gasped and pulled away. The reality of her feelings hit her. She burst into tears.    “Emma?” Francis, cursing himself for a fool, for pushing her too hard, gathered her into his arms, ignoring her half-hearted resistance. “I’m sorry, Emma. It was too soon, I know. Emma? Sweetheart?”    Emma gulped and stifled her sobs. “It’s true!” she said, her voice a tear-choked whisper. “They said you were a rake and you’d want to take me to bed and I didn’t believe them but it’s true.” She ended this astonishing speech on a hiccup.

Chapter 10.5

They had timed their plan carefully to avoid any possible mishap. The unmasking was scheduled for one o’clock. At precisely half-past twelve, Sophia and Sir Jack left the ballroom and strolled in a convincingly relaxed manner down a secluded walk which led to a little gazebo. The gazebo was placed across the path and, beyond it, the path continued to a gate giving access to the carriage drive.    Within sight of the gazebo, Sophia halted, “Maribella’s inside. I’ll wait here and ensure no one interrupts.”    Sir Jack swallowed, nodded once and left her. He climbed the few steps and entered the gazebo. In the dimness, he beheld the rose-pink domino, her mask still in place, waiting nervously for him to approach. Reverently, he went forward and then went d
