131. Mysterious Sophia

Martha Bartlett stood on the other side of Edward’s hospital bed and had a conversation with the doctor. "What exactly happened when he woke up?" Gray whispered. Zia grabbed two magazines and handed one to her while she used the other one to hide her face. "I was just talking to him because I thought he was sleeping. Then I saw his hand move, then he called my name." Gray took the magazine and also hid her face behind it. "Sophia?" "No, Zia." "Does he now know you're Zia?" "I don't know." Gray eyed her. "Just what were you telling him?" "Just...stuff." Zia averted her eyes. "What stuff?" Zia turned to her. "Where were you last night? "Just...somewhere." Now it was Gray's turn to avert her eyes. "Where somewhere?" "Call it even and I'll let you sleep in my bed for a day." Zia scoffed. "A month." "Two days." "Three weeks." "Three days." "Two weeks." Gray grunted. "One week." "Call." "Call." The two shared a quick handshake. "Hey, girls." "Oh, fuck!" Gray whispere

132. Homework

"I think a month," blurted Zia Scott. "Or a year?" added Gray, who just followed Zia's nonsense comment. Martha's forehead wrinkled. "What?" "Auntie, eat," Zia said in a panic and handed her a piece of bread. "Yes. Eat, Martha, you must still be really exhausted." Gray handed her the jam. "Thanks, kids." Martha softly chuckled. *** "So what's your favorite cartoon, Sophia?" asked Edward, still laying down on his hospital bed. His oxygen mask had already been removed an hour ago at noon although the IV, collar and ECG machine still remained. He could already speak with no brakes, and his upper muscles were already mobile although his lower limbs would still ache and there were still hints of frailness from his listless way of speaking and his torpid movements. Zia, who was seated on a stool beside him, answered, "Uhh...Tom and Jerry?" Edward softly chuckled. "They're still airing that?" Considering the five-year old little Sophia was actually a facade of the twenty-five-year o

133. Mammal

She couldn't help but to also laugh at his answer. Indeed among the three of them, if Edward was an angel inside and out, Gray would seem to be the contradiction--like a reformed demon. She was an untamed feral in her childhood days and Zia had her own share of taming the beast into a presentable human being that she was now. Being the one with a balanced personality, Zia acted like the guardian that prevented the excessively kind Edward from being taken advantage of, and ensured that the ferocious Gray wouldn't beat to death the people that would do so. Zia, in a concept, was an integral cog to their friendship and growth. "But please call her out if you hear your Aunt Gray use that word to a person again, okay?" he added. "Okay!" she responded with enthusiasm. "But was that your homework?" His brows furrowed. "What's a mammal?!" she exclaimed in panic. "A mammal?" He momentarily stared blankly into a distance. "It's a class of animals that are distinguished by having hair or fur

134. Bachelorette

"Good morning, uncle Edward!" little Sophia's beaming smile greeted Edward Bartlett as soon as he opened his eyes. "Good morning, Sophia." He smiled back. She giggled. "Did you sleep well?" "Yes, I did," he answered. "What about you?" "I slept well too!" she hopped on her seat as she answered. "You came so early," he noted. Apparently, Gray and little Sophia didn't spend the night at the hospital. "Because I want to see you already!" she answered with a big smile on her face. He could almost see her big round eyes gleaming. "Is that so?" He slowly sat up and positioned the pillow against his back. "I feel so honored." He softly chuckled. "You should be." She brought both hands on her hips, acting smug. "I am a very busy person." He softly chuckled at her precociousness. Then he eyed her clothes. "You're wearing a lovely blue dress today." "Of course!" She smirked. "Because I have better fashion sense than Gray and her forlorn wardrobe. You should see her closet, it's like a b

135. Dinner Together

Zia Scott heard beeping on the door and then approaching footsteps while she was watching an evening drama on the flat screen. Gray passed by the living room and straight to the bathroom. Zia rose and headed to the kitchen. "Did you lose your watch?" she said loudly. Gray went out of the bathroom. "No, why?" Zia shot her an angry look. "You said you'd be back in an hour or two. It's been three hours." Gray hiked her eyebrows. "And?" "And now the food's cold." Zia started to sulk. "What, you cooked?" "Why? Did you eat already?" Zia's voice rose. "No, no I didn't." Gray entered the kitchen. "So what did you cook?" She opened the two pots on the countertop. "I see. Pot roast and mashed potato? Definitely good." Gray looked down at her, who was obviously laying out her annoyance. Then Gray suddenly lifted her by her waist and put her on a chair by the dining table. "Just sit still there, your highness, while I reheat the food." Zia stared at Gray's back while she moved around in

136. To the Mall

“Come on, wake up already!” Zia grunted as she pulled on Gray’s blanket who was sleeping on the couch. Gray groaned. “I don’t have work today. Go play with your barbie and stop bothering me.” She yawned and tucked herself in the blanket. “The food is gonna get cold again!” whined Zia and pulled hard on the blanket with all her strength that made Gray fall down the floor. “Oww,” Gray groaned. Then she glared at Zia. Zia just stood unwavered with her arms crossed. “Eat or I’m not cooking for you anymore.” Gray grumpily stood up and went to the dining table. She stretched out her body and groaned. “I swear my back is killing me.” Zia also went to the table and hopped on a chair. They started to eat. There were buttered sandwiches, bacon, sunny-side-ups, pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs and milk on the table. “Damn it, my whole body is sore,” groaned Gray as she stabbed a sausage with a fork and brought it to her mouth. Zia quietly snickered, putting food on her plate. Gray saw

137. Coincidence

Gray Stewart’s attention shifted to the voice coming from behind her. It was a familiar voice. She could look over her shoulder but she didn’t want to. A head peered from beside her. It was Sarah Lewis. “So, it’s really you,” she said. “I doubted myself for a second since you didn’t look back when I called.” Meanwhile, Zia was preoccupied with her zealousness for shopping. In the few minutes since she entered the boutique, she was already able to find 6 clothes that she wanted to try on. Struggling to gather the clothes with her short arms, she walked toward the entrance where Gray was standing and saw her talking to a saleslady. The saleslady’s back was facing her. She approached them. “Gray, could you hold this?” she said as she attempted to pass the clothes to Gray. She caught the sales lady's attention and the woman turned around. And before Gray could grab the clothes, Zia’s arms felt goosebumps and she dropped the clothes. Her eyes were dilated and jaw dropped as she frozenl

138. Edward and Belinda

“Isn’t that Edward and Belinda?” Gray stared intently and found Edward and Belinda entering the restaurant across the street from where they were parked. “Yeah, so?” she impassively uttered. “Do you not see what I’m seeing?” asked the frustrated Zia. “Yes, I see them. You do see I have eyes too, right?” said Gray sarcastically. “So they’re together, why are you getting all jittery?” “Join me, will you?!” exclaimed Zia. “That’s my fiancé with another woman and they’re entering a restaurant!” “Yeah,” Gray lethargically responded and leaned back on her seat. “Since a restaurant is a very erotic place and I heard their medium rare toy is their specialty and ordering the full course will probably take them to home base.” Zia shot her an angry glance then unbuckled her belt. “What are you doing?” said Gray. “I’m following them.” Zia opened the door on her side and climbed out of the car. Gray raised her eyebrows. “Huh? What about my dinner?” Zia slammed the door shut and left. Gra

139. Great Coincidence

“Gray…and Sophia?” said a visibly surprised Edward Bartlett. “I didn’t know you guys were here.” Zia smiled awkwardly at him. And seeing as Gray was just nonchalantly eating, it made Zia palm her own face from frustration. “H…hi, Uncle Edward.” She tirelessly waved her hand. “Are you guys having dinner here too?” he asked. Gray cleansed her mouth with a glass of water after she instantaneously ate half of her portion. “I am,” she said to him. “Wow. What a great coincidence, huh?” said an amused Edward. “What’s the occasion?” Gray and Zia shared a glance. “Her parents got promoted so we’re celebrating,” Gray reasoned out. “Really? That’s good news. Where are they then?” “Out of the country. But they sent money so we can celebrate on our own,” Gray curtly answered. “Really?” Edward looked at Zia. “It’s a shame your family can’t join you tonight, Sophia.” “It’s all right. I have my auntie Gray with me.” Zia smiled sweetly. And she noticed Gray scoffing on her cutesy act. And i

140. Text Pal

Gray breathed sharply and rose. “I’m going to bed.” Still no response from Zia. “Goodnight.” Gray went to her bedroom. She rummaged through her closet for comfortable sleepwear and found a black t-shirt and sweatpants. She changed out of her clothes and succumbed on the bed. She looked at the time on her phone. 11:07 PM. She put the phone on her nightstand and tucked herself in. As she was about to drift off, her phone chimed. She checked the notification. It was a text message from Sarah Lewis. “Hi. Are you asleep already?” the message read. She positioned the phone over her face and started typing an answer. “No.” A few seconds later, her phone chimed again. “I just wanna tell you I had fun yesterday. I didn’t know you were the Auntie that Sophia mentioned.” “Okay,” Gray replied. DING! “Are you going to sleep now?” Gray stared at the text message for a few seconds. Then she wrote a response. “You?” DING! “I’m at work right now. If I sleep I get fired.” Gray’s lips sub
