Chapter 15 Womanhood

*Ana*“Ah,” I wince slightly as she goes again, rough with the sponge. Red streaks run down my skin with every scrub, rendering me sore after. It’s almost enough to make me want to call to stop, but keeping my peace, if not for the fact, that I know she’s just being thorough.Thorough, yes, but she’s not like Maddie. I can’t help but compare. But Naska is not Maddie, and it doesn’t help to dwell. Naska is doing her job. Who was I to expect more? No, it’s easier just to let it be. I can put up with this much.“You're quiet today, Your Empress” Naska speaks, quite a surprise, considering she rarely ever starts. “Penny for your thoughts?”“I was just,” but I cut off with a sharp cry, “Ow,” I look down, seeing Naska miss the sponge and accidentally rake her nails over my arm. “Apologies, your Empress.” Naska quickly excuses, but by now, it is already over. The scrubbing was done, and she was up and moving for a clean wrap. I, in the meantime, look over at the red marks, before sighing. Bu

Chapter 16 Invitation to Hell

*Aunt Funda*“What is this?” Funda nearly killed over right then and there as the postmaster left, leaving Funda with not one, but three big problems. And making it as if she was about to scream, her fangs sharpening, and blood rushing into her ears. But as tempting as it was, Funda stopped herself, knowing full well she couldn’t, not when all the servants and ladies of the court were in earshot. “Is everything alright, Lady Funda?” Sure enough, one of the older noble women spotted Funda, and drew closer with interest.“Is that her Empress’s mail?” She asked on, sweetly, stepping closer, “And a package too?” She leaned in, eyes clearly trying to read. “I wonder who sent such a,”“Oh, yes,” Funda quickly pulled the tray close to her, “just news of the colonies again.” Funda lied, desperate to hide the senders.“Oh,” The noble seemed to deflate, “Just that?” Funda nodded.“Yes, probably nothing but more bad news.” Funda went on, “I’m sure her Empress will prattle on about it in the nex

Chapter 17 Is This True

*Ana*"What is this?" I thought I was prepared, no, that I would be, for anything. Whatever could be inside. Whatever Nicoli wrote, I would accept it. But this was nothing like I expected.Nicoli wrote this? The same boy, who father told me, I had traumatized? This was the same Nicoli who wrote this?"I don't believe this." Something has to be wrong because there is simply no way. I can’t even trust my eyes, let alone, read aloud."Dear Ana, I know I'm late sending this. So please don't be mad, but I wanted to make it a surprise. So, are you surprised? I bet you are. So, what do you think? Do you like it? Philpé and I doubled down on getting it done as fast as possible. I wished it went sooner, but the paint doesn't dry quickly, apparently. And I had to sit with all these bugs, too. Bees kept getting in my way, and I almost got stung (but I didn't.)Anyway, this is what I look like now. I've grown a lot since we last met, and I wanted to make sure you could recognize me. You shouldn'

Chapter 18 Breaking Plans

*Ana*"You can't be serious." Mykhol goes again, pacing back and forth. I have never seen him so… disturbed? Would that be the word? Maybe. But I can say, this is the first time I’ve seen him act like this. So very out of character. His smile is gone, and his hair is in disarray, having run his hand through it too many times. Why, if there were any other time, I would laugh. It is so rare to see Mykhol out of sorts like this, Any other time, it would be funny. But not now. After deciding to use what was still left of the morning, I decided to head out to the garden. It wasn’t going to be long, what with the hotter time approaching, the noon sun coming. But I wanted to savor the cooler time with a walk, dare it, and even dwell on my new revelations until Mykhol arrived. And since then, it’s been him constantly talking. How did he know already? The question does come to mind, but just as quickly, I let go. Regardless of how Mykhol would know. Everyone would, later on. I suppose some th

Chapter 19 A Wind from Almony

*Nicoli*“Ah,” Nicoli groaned for what must be the umpteenth time, unable to disguise his boredom, and quickly found the instant backlash for it. The penalty? A quick feeling of sharp nails digging into his shoulder, of course.“Straighten up, my darling,” Belinda spoke, smiling, but he wasn’t fool enough to buy it. No, his mother was growing annoyed. Annoyed and…dangerous, Nicoli knew.Better not push it. Nicoli resigned himself and obeyed. It was that, or feel more of her wrath. Neither of which, was a better option though.“My suit's too tight,” Nicoli grumbled and moved his arms to feel them pinched. “I can’t move my arms right,” and his chest felt too big, pulling at the jacket's shoulders, making him slightly slouch forward. “Mom…”“I told you..” His mother only returned, “But you refused to let the tailor do his job.” And with that, she sighed, “Now bear with it, and behave.”“But…” Nicoli frowned at her. Yes, she was right, but that didn’t change how uncomfortable he was now.

Chapter 20 Blood Just as Sweet

*Ana*It will get better once we reach the mountains. I can only keep repeating. It’s so very hot, that I can feel the sweat soak up the back of my traveling gown. And I don’t need to ask to know everyone is suffering.Mykhol certainly is. Though, he tries to hide it. He smiles after me, a reassuring notion as if to say this isn’t so bad. But just as he smiles, it fades quickly. And Mykhol falls back to stare out the window, a strange look on his face, as if miles away.If he was going to be like this, I should have told him to stay. I can’t help but feel some guilt. He is doing his best, but the suffering is clear. And as much as I wish to prevent it, it’s too late, and we are too far to turn back. I can only swallow down my guilt, and move to rest my head against the cushion of the window. “Ah!” We all cry as the carriage, moving into the grassier plains, sharply runs over a rock, throwing us off. Mykhol slides right into me, making me slam my head right into the glass with a lou

Chapter 21 The Beginning Of A Beautiful Thing

*Queen Belinda*Come on, Nicoli. Belinda held her breath, feeling her heart pump in her chest. This was the big event, and she could barely wait to see how he would do. Surely expecting him to smile, and sweep her off her feet, like with all the servants. He’s a natural, so of course he will. He’ll understand and do everything I taught him and-"Hello, Hidi," Nicoli simply went flatly, not giving her more than a second glance, before turning back to watch the carriages, clearly more interested in them."Nicoli," What are you doing? Belinda nearly dropped her jaw. This was Queen Hildenberg! Of Almony! And you just say’ hello!?“Nicoli, honey,” Belinda gently nudged to get his attention, quietly trying to speak through her eyes. Look at her. Forget the damn carriage for a second. But, alas, Nicoli only leaned away, too busy on the watching the carriages."Nicoli, "Of all times for you to do this. But it was no use. Nicoli seemed to have no intention to do anymore, Much to Belinda's griev

Chapter 22 Pay Attention Pretty Please

*Hidi*Maybe he forgot I was even here? It wasn’t long before the charm of Nicoli’s disinterest fell off. And Hidi wanted to do something else. Anything more than just standing by, watching carriages and little girls come up. “Nicoli,” Hidi started, turning to touch his shoulder. “Huh?” Nicoli peered up, his blue eyes wide and confused. They were so blue and beautiful when they finally looked up at her, finally noticed her, that Hidi felt slightly stunned, and lost in them. “You…”Hidi had to take a moment to regain her composure, slightly amused at her loss of thought. “You are quite small, Prince Nicoli,” Hidi went on, blurting the first thing to come to mind. “But you are cute…For a human.”“No, I’m not.” Nicoli retorted, shuffling his shoulder from her hand. “I’m normal size. It’s you. You’re just insanely big.” “Is that…all you heard?” Hidi mused, noting he overlooked the cute part. If on purpose or not, it made her laugh. The intentional, or not, obliviousness, seemed to only

Chapter 23

By the time the carriage reached the castle, it was already late and dark. Ana could see out the window a small handful of servants who stood waiting. They looked tired and yawned as they held their lanterns for the late arrivals.Just seeing their tired faces made Ana feel guilty. She would be one of those they had to stay up for. If only she had read the invite sooner, she could have spared them. But she tried not to beat herself up too much for it.At least we made it. Ana thought. That was the best she could ask for. From outside, Ana felt the carriage shake. The coachman was down from his seat and to their door.“Your Empress,” The coachman nodded gruffly. He seemed to look neither warm nor cold as he lifted his head. He was one of the few servants who stayed neutral toward Ana. “About time,” Mykhol went behind her. He seemed anxious to get out of the carriage. Naska nodded alongside.“I thought we’d never get here,” Naska added and hovered closer to Mykhol. Ana left first down

Chapter 24

“Please make yourselves comfortable.” Julia went with a hand across the room. The room looked like a garden. Painted flowers and leaves spread over the walls. And potted plants hung from hemp rope baskets. But it wasn’t solely plants that made up the decoration. Whoever decorated had taken the time to match the very furniture in the room. The same colors were used in the couches. And the same style of leaves was used in the throw pillows.Overall the room gave an impression of comfort, if not excessive. And Ana appreciated it. It was a better change than when she last had tea in Dawny.I’d instead a room like this any day. Ana thought before she saw the coffee table. And instantly, her mind went blank. The coffee table was heavily lined with sweets. An assortment Ana was not familiar with but looked tasty all the same. Alongside the cakes, there was a tea set. A gentle steam was curling out of the spot as a sign it was just prepared.I’ve never seen so much! Ana felt her mouth wate
