CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE           **MARIANNA**     Despite having taken a car to school, we were still twenty five minutes late because of the morning rush. Mrs. Hathaway stopped the car at the front of the school and both Vanessa and I got down from the car.   "Have a good day at school girls. Bye!" She said and we nodded our heads as we waved and watched her drive off. Vanessa and I turned towards the school and walked in through the school gate.   We first went to our lockers to get the necessary books we will be needing before going to the direction our classroom was located. Vanessa and I breath out nervously when we got to the door of our classroom. I opened the door and walked in first with Vanessa behind me. All eyes fell on us immediately we stepped in, including that of the teacher who was kinda glaring murderously at us for coming l

Chapter Twenty-Two•BRIANNA•I woke up to the harsh heat of the sun, its rays seeping through the curtains and hitting my face. I squeezed my eyes shut, pulling the duvet over my head to shield myself from the bright, unforgiving light. Just as I was about to drift back into sleep, a voice cut through my grogginess.“Miss, you need to wake up now. It’s past 11 a.m. already.”The voice wasn’t my mom’s or my sister’s, and since when did anyone start calling me “miss”?“Five more minutes, please,” I moaned, barely able to keep my eyes open. I heard a soft chuckle in response.“As much as I’d love to let you sleep, you were up really late last night, and the boss ordered me to wake you up.” The voice paused. “I’m sorry to disturb you.”Before I could protest, the duvet was yanked off me, exposing me to the cold air of the room. I flinched and blinked at the middle-aged woman standing beside my bed, her face smiling warmly at me.“Well, somebody finally decided to wake up,” she said with a

Chapter Twenty-three•BRIANNA•After breakfast with Mr. Adrian, we headed towards the row of cars parked outside. I was taken aback by how many cars he owned—he could probably start a car dealership with the number of luxury vehicles he had. He picked one of them, and I couldn’t help but admire how sleek and expensive it looked. Honestly, all his cars had that look. Maybe one day, I’ll have cars and mansions to call my own.“Mr. Adrian, will I be the one driving you?” I asked, noticing his driver standing nearby.I hadn’t even realized he was there until he spoke.“No, I’ll be driving,” Mr. Adrian answered. He unlocked the door and slid into the driver’s seat. I reached for the back seat, but his voice stopped me.“What do you think you’re doing?” he asked, his tone sharp.“I want to sit,” I replied, a little confused.“Why would you sit in the back like I’m a cab driver?” he snapped. “Come to the front.”I slammed the door behind me, frustrated.“Hey! Be careful with that! This car co

Chapter Twenty-four•ADRIAN•There’s never a dull moment with Brianna. It’s strange; we don’t really get along, but our constant arguments are actually fun. Maybe it’s the way she flares up at every little thing, or just the look of frustration on her face when I push her buttons. Either way, I can’t seem to stop myself.Since I wasn’t going to work today, I thought I’d pay Manuel a surprise visit at his office. It took about an hour to get there, and as I parked in the lot, I could already picture the look on his face when he saw me walk in unannounced. Manuel wasn’t exactly a fan of surprises—especially during office hours—but that only made it more entertaining for me. I strolled into the building, nodding at the familiar greetings from his employees.“Good morning, Sir.” “Long time, Sir!” “It’s good to see you again, Sir.”I responded with a brief nod at each greeting until I got to the elevator. I pressed the button for Manuel’s floor and waited, feeling a little impatient for the

Chapter Twenty-Five•MANUEL•Adrian parked the car, and we both stepped out, immediately drawing whispers from people nearby.“Aren’t those Manuel Collins and Adrian Carter?” someone whispered, loud enough for us to hear.“Wow! They look so handsome!”“This is my first time seeing them in real life. They’re both so hot. What are they doing here, though?” one person asked her friend.“This is a public restaurant, but didn’t you know? Adrian Carter owns this place,” her friend replied, almost smugly, as if she were proud to know such privileged information.I smirked, amused by the comments as we made our way into the restaurant. I was used to the attention—enjoyed it, even. People’s whispers, the way they stared, it all fed my ego in ways I wouldn’t admit out loud. Adrian, on the other hand, was as unaffected as ever, ignoring both the compliments and the stares like they didn’t even exist. He was always so… calm.We settled at a table a little removed from the others, enjoying a rare m

Chapter Twenty-six•MANUEL•I walked the beauty goddess over to where Adrian had parked the car earlier, and she instantly started gawking at it. Her wide-eyed expression made it look like she had just seen the most beautiful thing on earth.“Is this your car?” she asked, her voice thick with disbelief.“No, it’s for my friend,” I replied, keeping it casual.“Wow, it looks so beautiful. That friend of yours must be super rich,” she said, still mesmerized.“Wait until you see mine,” I boasted. “You’ll faint the moment you set eyes on it.”She hissed in disbelief. “Whatever, fool. Open this damn car, and let’s go get my new phone. I have work in a bit, and I don’t have time for this.”Is this the same girl who was just admiring the car like a starstruck fan? Mood swings, much?We got into Adrian’s car, and I started the engine. I was just going to take her to the phone store and be done with it. The silence between us was unbearable, so I decided to break it.“So… you haven’t told me you

Chapter Twenty-seven |Honey Crown Restaurant| ~Manager’s Office~ •ADRIAN• “Good afternoon, Sir,” Mrs. Williams greeted me timidly. If I didn’t know her better, I would have thought she was a gentle woman. But in reality, she’s far from gentle, and that’s why she’s still working for me. “Good afternoon, Mrs. Williams. I came to see how everything has been going. How are things?” I asked. “Everything has been fine, Sir. Lots of customers have been coming daily, and sales have been going smoothly. We even had to restock the food items twice last week,” she said, smiling. “Wow! That’s great. Are the employees performing their duties well enough?” I asked. “Yes, they’re doing great. But some of them come in late sometimes and always have excuses for their tardiness,” she replied. “Who are they?” I asked. “One of the cooks and two of the waitresses,” she responded. “Are they here now?” I asked. “The waitresses are present, but the cook hasn’t arrived yet,” she replied. “Since wh

Chapter Twenty-eight •BRIANNA• I woke up from a three-hour nap feeling surprisingly great. I stretched, releasing a loud yawn, but immediately caught a bad smell. I glanced around to figure out where it was coming from, only to realize it was my breath—yikes! I hadn’t brushed my teeth since this morning, and I ate without brushing. I hadn’t even taken a bath yet. Damn, I felt so dirty today. I should probably get cleaned up right away. I got up and headed to the bathroom, brushing my teeth and taking a much-needed bath. I also washed my hair since it had been quite a while. After freshening up, I blow-dried my hair with my old hair dryer and threw on a top and jean shorts before heading downstairs. Mom was sitting on the couch, absorbed in an outdated magazine. “Hey, Mom, finding anything interesting in that magazine?” I teased as I sat next to her. She glanced up. “Oh please, Brianna. You know I’ve gone through this magazine a thousand times. There’s nothing new in it,” she murmu

Chapter Twenty-nine |FEW DAYS LATER| ~EVENING~ •MARIANA• We are finally done with our exams, and I am so excited. Tomorrow, the twenty students who won the scholarships will be announced, and I can’t wait to find out who made it. I came home from school an hour ago, took care of the necessary things, and then got dressed for work. Mom was taking a nap, and Brianna was still at work. I left a short note on Mom’s bedside table to let her know I’d gone to work, so she wouldn’t wonder where I was when she woke up. My workplace is about twenty minutes away, so I chose to walk rather than waste money on the bus. It also served as a bit of exercise. I arrived a few minutes later, sweating from the scorching sun outside. I flashed a smile at Rosalind, the older woman sitting behind the receptionist’s desk, and she smiled back. I went to the backroom, changed into my uniform, folded the clothes I had on, and placed them in my locker alongside my handbag before walking back out to meet Ros

Chapter Thirty |AC ORGANIZATIONS| |BRIANNA’S OFFICE| •BRIANNA• I was in my office, busy replying to some important emails that needed to be addressed on behalf of Mr. Adrian, when the intercom buzzed. I already knew who was calling before I even picked it up. I answered the call and placed the receiver to my ear. “Good day, boss,” I greeted coldly. Since that incident outside my house, when Mr. Adrian and I argued, I had been avoiding him. I only spoke to him when absolutely necessary, and only about work. “Come to my office now,” he ordered rudely, not even acknowledging my greeting before hanging up. I rolled my eyes at his usual lack of manners, but it wasn’t like I was surprised. That’s just how he was. I closed my laptop and stood up. Walking out of my office, I made my way to his. I knocked once and entered without waiting for permission. I walked over to his desk, and he glanced up at me. His intense stare made me squirm a little, but I managed to look indifferent. “You
