Chapter 11

I still remember the last time I saw my mother. I was eleven, just entered middle school. I laid in bed that night, unable to sleep when I heard the shouting. Mom and dad were arguing again. It seemed to happen quite a bit around that time. Lucy and Shawn were just born, and I loved sneaking in to watch them sleep. I was overjoyed to have a sister in this house of boys. I pictured us doing all the things I was deprived of as a kid and couldn't wait until she was old enough to do her nails. Having nothing else to do at such a late hour, I crawled silently out of bed and crept down the hall from Mom and Dad’s aggressive voices to my siblings’ room. Liam and Jonatha

Chapter 12

I sat idly on the hard mattress, staring down at my thumbs, trying to process everything that was going on. I have never felt so overwhelmed in my life, but at the same time, I felt as though my life was starting to piece together. Gosh, even my feelings were jumbled up. I felt the mattress sink as Nathan’s massive size jumped up on the bed. Although I offered him clothes, he refused to change back into human form. His huge, dark wolf blended into the darkness of the room. The sun had almost fallen down; it was barely peeking over the plain, plunging the world into darkness at only six o'clock. He scooted closer up the bed to me and rested his large head on my thigh. I

Chapter 13

The second I stepped out of the room, I felt paranoid. All this action hasn't been good for my nerves, and now that we were technically fugitives, I felt even more worried than normal. I all but ran over to the car and threw in the bag before opening the back door and letting Nathan in. I yanked open my own door and twisted the key in the ignition, sighing in relief as it rumbled to life. Pressing down on the gas, I swerved out of the parking lot and pulled back on the highway. “You could have changed to at least help me with the driving,” I mumbled, frustrated at his adamant disagreement with changing back to human form.

Chapter 14

I reached the pump and popped the cap off the side and lifted the pump. The numbers on the machine were still from the last purchase and I waited patiently for the man in the station to add my money to the pump. I would stay here all night if it meant I didn't have to go back in to see those guys. I tapped my foot on the ground, waiting for the numbers to reset, but nothing happened. I looked over at the backseat at Nathan and he looked back at me expectantly, as if waiting for me to go back in there. I sighed and placed the heavy pump down before turning to go back into the small building. I w

Chatper 15

Without another thought, he leaped in the air and aimed for AJ's throat. He shoved him behind the bag that fell to the floor and gurgled screams died instantly. Micah's face paled as he watched Nathan tear into AJ, still ripping his flesh apart. He stumbled for a second before bolting for the door, all his prospects from before long forgotten. I raised the gun quickly, afraid he was going to get away. “Stop!” I yelled, fully aware he wasn't going to comply if it meant getting attacked by a rabid wolf. I lifted my gun and aimed it for his back, watching his long, blonde hair fly behind him in his hurry.

Chapter 16

“Turn back!” I screeched at Nina from where I sat and lurched from the cushion under me. I had to get that map. I couldn’t get to Jonathan without that. And there was no way I was just not going to see him. “What, are you crazy? You’re lucky we got out of there with you in the car!” Nathan growled lightly from next to me, probably not liking the idea of leaving me behind. I understood, I felt the same way about him.

Chapter 17

I plopped onto the furthest mattress and took off my shoes, making it obvious I wasn’t going anywhere for a while. Nathan growled at the way I easily let my guard down around someone who was still technically a stranger, and I found it comforting he was as hesitant to trust her as much as I was. But he had enough paranoia for the both of us at the moment. Maybe it was something about the caged animal, but Nathan did not like being put in a small room with someone untrustworthy. Nina took the other bed and did the same to her shoes. She hauled her own backpack on the bed and reached inside. Nathan growled again at her actions,

Chapter 18

The barbed fence stood tall as a barrier between the cars and the outside world. A small booth sat huddled in the corner, a single exterior light the only thing making it conspicuous against the thick darkness of night. Street lights lined the chain fence along the exterior, extending down past my view. I wondered if there were cameras on the posts. Rows and rows of cars were lined in neat rows, seeming to be going on forever in hundreds of cars. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a thousand cars in this lot alone. “Alright, now,” Nina whispered at me as we approached the gate. W

Chapter 19

“What?” Nina tried to get me to talk again, but I was suddenly aware I didn’t know where Nathan was. I looked around frantically until my eyes settled on the massive wolf. He circled the Spiritwalker stealthily until jumping forward and nipping at the end of the cloth. You could tell he was taunting him, but the foolish Spirit thought Nathan was trying to attack and jumped away from him to try and assault from the side. Now Nathan was just enjoying himself as he stepped back and started to circle around again. I had to tell him. I sprung up and scrambled to the face-off. &ldqu

Chapter 20

We ran for a while until it finally felt safe enough to stop. My leg was throbbing as we slowed and I sat down to try to get a look at it. They must have shot me. I reached my hand back to find the hole the bullet went in, but there was nothing there. No blood, no gaping hole, nothing. Frantically, I looked for the only other thing it could be. Nathan was standing in front of me, favoring his right hind leg. I stood up and moved to Nathan, trying to get him to lay down so I can help. “Did you get shot?” Nina asked me as I winced from moving my leg. “I’m fine, but Nathan did. Do you kno
