Prologue

Angelique walked out of her van and approached the entrance of a seemingly normal establishment. Attendants lined each side of the path and bowed to greet her. “Greetings, Madam.” they spoke with reverence. She bowed in return. She entered the reception’s desk and spotted an attendant assisting a client who had just came in. The receptionist, Phaedra, saw her and immediately bowed in respect. The madam walked out of the reception area and into the arboretum. Ascalaphus, who was cutting the shrubs into various shapes, stopped his task to go to her side. He bowed his head. “Encountered any problem with the greenery?” Angelique asked. “They are coming along nicely, my lady.” He matched her pace as she walked around. “How about the seedlings in the conservatory?” “I have assigned a c

Chapter 1 - I am Still Deciding if Meeting You is Fortune or Misfortune

"Strangers are just friends you have yet to spend time with." “GUYS, I just have to say, I’m soooo excited for our first out-of-town trip!” Angelique squealed as she talked to her friends on video call. Her friends and she just graduated college with a degree in Education a few weeks ago. Uneasy with leaving student life behind at long last and nervous with finally entering the world of professionals, they decided to have their first of many trips before they get serious with giving out resumés and going to job interviews. Nina answered her, “You better not be late tomorrow or we will have the van leave you.” Jeffrey butted in, “Do you remember where we should meet?” “Of course! It’s at the mall entrance 9:00 am, am I right?” she answered. Revin sighed, “

Chapter 2 - Today I rest but tomorrow I will fight

"The difference between possible and impossible is one’s willingness to jump into the unknown." ANGELIQUE eventually found their van parked just a little bit farther from the entrance. The van door opened. “Hey pretty lady, do you know what time it is??” Jeffrey asked her.“It is 9:30 already! What took you so long?” Nina fetched her bags for her. “Why would you even ask, Nina? It is as if you do not know our friend that well.” Revin said feigning irritation. “Hmm.. I am just giving her the benefit of the doubt.” “Ugh.. I am sorry, okay? But I was here earlier already! I should have been in the van with you guys earlier if not for a rude guy I just met.” she said. “What happened?” Angelique told them about

Chapter 3 - I Would Have Never Believed It, Had It Not Happen to Me

“A stranger you meet more that once is not meant to stay as a stranger.” “ARE you sure we are not lost?” Angelique asked Revin who was at the far front, leading the group. “My cousin took me there last time we were here. We are on the right track, I think.” “What if we are bewitched by elves or dwarves? We would not notice it but we may be walking in circles!” Nina exlaimed, making the atmosphere eerie. “I am not really superstitious, I do not believe that kind of stuff.” Jeff answered. “But if you do, you just wear your shirt inside out. That should do it.” For a long while, it seemed like they were just going round and round. The trees and plants looked the same. Angelique was starting to get tired from all the walking. She wanted to rest for a little bit so she called out t

Chapter 4 - I am Only Human!

"A man’s power lies in his ambition and determination."   ANGELIQUE opened her eyes to an unfamiliar room. The overwhelming colors of black and red caught her eyes in an instant.   “Persephone, you are awake.”   She belatedly notice that Hades was seated on her bedside, holding her hand. His voice does not have a hit of emotion in it but his furrowed brows give him away. Is he worried about her?   She slowly pulled her hand away and nodded.   “Charon, call Asclepius.”   A middle-aged man entered the room. He strongly smelled of herbs which had a calming effect on Angelique. His face was covered with beard that flows down to his chest. He reminded Angelique of Santa Clause except for the black color of his hair.   “My lord, my lady..” The man bowed to them. “Madam, I am Ascl

Chapter 5 - Studying the Art of Escaping

"One can be physically free but confined by the limitations of his own mind." A FEW MORE days passed by. Angelique went about her routine. Breakfast in the morning, walk around the mansion, spy a little bit on Hades, chat with some lampads, annoy Charon, then go to bed. She did this to observe the pattern of everyone in the estate. She noted that the food was a lot better the next day. She made sure to compliment Rheie. "You are the best Rheie. You knew just what I need and you did something about it." Rheie was only able to bow and accept her praise. She was forbidden to say who exactly ordered the change in the menu.  There were a lot of servants in the mansion in the mornings. But about half of them disappears in the afternoon. “We lend extra hands to the employees in the underworld, madam.” One of the lampads answered to her w

Chapter 6 - Understanding the Stranger That is My Husband

"Curiosity kills a stranger and births a friend." AS SOON AS Angelique opened her eyes the next day, Charon was standing at the foot of her bed. “Good morning, Madam. I will step out for a moment as you freshen up.” It was so weird seeing him without his master, “Where is Hades?” He jerked at the mention of the lord’s mortal name. “He had a meeting with other minor deities of the underworld.” He would not even bother seeing her off. Not that Angelique is disappointed not to see him for the last time. She knew that she will be returning to her family. So she decided to wear simple clothes so as not to arouse any unnecessary attention from people. Charon was right outside the master’s bedroom, waiting for her. “Madam, you

Chapter 7 - Peeling the Many Layers of His Personality

"People who are usually quiet have the noisiest thoughts." THE NEXT MORNING, Angelique sat alone in the dining room at breakfast. “Where is Hades?” “He had to go out early for a meeting, my lady.” Rheie answered.  “A meeting in the underworld this early? I thought work does not start until sunset?” “He attended a meeting with mortals.” “Meeting with mortals? What do you mean?” “Aside from the underworld, the master owns hospitals, funerary parlors, and private cemeteries. This makes it easier to fetch our clients.” “Ohh.. That is quite creepy but strategic.” Angelique was expecting to see him at breakfast and patch things up. “Do you know what time he would be going home?&rdq

Chapter 8 - Between Managing the Household and the Husband

“The little girl asked her grandpa, ‘When did you first knew you loved grandma?’ He answered, ‘When I started slowing down during walks so I could be beside her.”   Angelique stood frozen by the bedside until Fran went back from the walk-in closet.   “What are you doing standing there?” he asked.   She looked at the cleopatra sofa and thought about asking Fran to sleep there. ‘He might feel uncomfortable on it. He must be used to sleeping in a big, soft bed.’ So she took a pillow and walked to the sofa.   “Where are you going?” he asked some more.   “You go sleep on the bed. I will be sleeping here on the sofa.”   “That is just ridiculous. That sofa is not built for sleeping.”   “It is

Chapter 9 -At the Beginning of Destiny

“There are two ways to look at life: thinking that things you desire come to you because it was meant to be, and thinking that it comes to you because you have worked hard towards reaching them.”   After a few more days of playing Fran’s little assistant, Angelique had become familiar of his work routine. He would always go out of the mansion and head to a meeting in the underworld, in the mortal world regarding his businesses there, or in Olympus to report progress to the great twelve. When he does not have any meetings, he stay in his office to settle paper works that need his opinion or signature.   She stared at her reflection in the mirror of her dresser. Fran will be going back from a meeting he had with the three judges of the underworld. It was already late at night.   “Madam, looks like the meeting will not be ending soon.” Rheie informed her.
