Chapter Twenty-One: Jaxon

"Damn it," I mutter under my breath, pursing my lips in annoyance."Your mom's going to kill us."Only if the forest continues to burn, Azazel growls.I raise my hand and focus on the fire tearing through the forest, blocking out everything else. I curl my fingers as the flames slowly start to die.I wait until the red glow is completely gone before lowering my hand."That's great, now nothing more will burn. But what about the trees that are already charcoal?" Fara growls.I sigh, my shoulders dropping. "I don't know," I say. Thick plumes of smoke curl into the sky, the acrid smell burns my nose and makes my eyes water. Small gray flecks fall around us, but I can't tell if it's snow or ash."Do you see that?" Ash asks, pointing to the trees. My eyebrows furrow. "What?""The smoke looks like it's moving."He's right. In the most damaged part of the forest, the smoke looks like it's weaving through th

Chapter Twenty-Two: Syrra

"So, are you going to tell me exactly what has happened over the past few days? Or am I going to have to guess?" Lyza suddenly asks, looking quite irritated.I fold my hands in my lap with a sheepish smile. "Right, okay. So, when Kaine left to come here, I went to visit my cousin. She helped me reverse the fertility spell and put Peter's soul in a vial.""Where is the vial?""Kaine has it.""What else?"My eyebrows shoot up in surprise. I thought she would be upset but she looks happy—no . . . relieved. "Uh well my cousin has been exiled for several years now. But before that she cursed me."Lyza frowns. "She cursed you?" She repeats carefully.I nod. "Well we really only call it a curse because it's a particularly harmful and debilitating spell. It diminished my power significantly but unfortunately I exiled the one person that knew how to remove it," I sigh."Yeah karma's a bitch that way," she remark

Chapter Twenty-Three: Ash

"Jaxon? You still awake?""Unfortunately.""Do you know what's going on?""No," he sighs. "But I have a feeling these cells were built for us."My gaze snaps to the bars. "It's cold iron, isn't it?""Yeah, the collar is too."I frown. "You're wearing a collar?"He growls. "Yeah. I feel like a fucking dog," he mutters.I scoot closer to the wall, hugging my knees to my chest. The pain and frustration in my mate's voice make my blood run cold. "Who the hell did this?" I ask.He sighs heavily. "I have no idea."***48 hours earlier . . ."Be nice Zahra," I say with a warning growl. She peers at me for a moment before creeping closer, more cautiously this time. She tentatively touches her nose to the baby's cheek, chirping a little. The baby lets out a tiny giggle and waves her arms around making Zahra leap back, her fur standing on end. I shake my head in amusemen

Chapter Twenty-Four: Lyzaria

"I should never have let them go alone.""You'd probably be gone too."I close my eyes tightly and clench my hands into fists. "Then at least I'd know if they're even alive," I murmur."My Queen—""Don't you dare call me that!" I snarl, my eyes blazing red as Mitalonys threatens to take over. "Until they are proven to be dead, they will remain the kings of the dragons. Until they are found, I am not your queen!"He bows his head. "How would you like me to address you?""Zari will do fine," I mutter."How will we show our respect?" He asks in disbelief."You will do as I ask and find my sons," I growl. He bows again. "Yes my—" he pauses for a moment. "Of course."I watch as he hurriedly leaves the room."It makes them uncomfortable to address you without a title."I glance over at Mika with a raised eyebrow. "Their discomfort means nothing to me. I will not allow them to assume my son and his mate are dead," I growl."Would you allow them to call you Luna? You held that title quite pro

Chapter Twenty-Five: Jada

"I'm not going.""They need your help!""I don't care. If she's so smart then she can figure it out herself," I sneer, my lips curling in disgust."She's clearly trying to rekindle your relationship, you should try as well."She's only trying to gain your trust so that she can kill you."Allowing me back onto the territory that is rightfully mine is a fucked up way of apologizing," I snap."She was a child then, don't you remember making questionable decisions when you were a child?"I purse my lips with an annoyed glare. "You're kidding right?""I mean an actual child—before she cursed you."I roll my eyes. "That was more than a century ago, of course I don't remember," I snort, flopping down onto my couch."Can you please be serious for a few minutes and just listen to me?"They're making you weak.I sigh. "Yeah go ahead," I grumble."From what you've told me

Chapter Twenty-Six: Jaxon

It's disturbing. We've been in this prison for at least 4 days now and still we've seen no one. We fall asleep and there is food and water in each of our cells when we wake up but I don't know who brings it. Well, I'm not entirely sure if sticky red paste actually constitutes as food but it seems to keep me satiated. "Jaxon?" I readjust my position against the wall, moving closer to the bars. "Yeah baby what is it?" "Do you think they're going to kill us?" The fear in his voice makes my chest tighten. "No one is going to touch you Ash. I made a promise to you and I intend to keep it," I growl. He is quiet for a few moments. Then his tentative voice reaches my ears again. "Jax I'm scared," he whimpers. My eyes start to water and I grit my teeth in frustration. "I know baby," I murmur. I want to bang my head against the wall until everything goes numb. He does not deserve any more pain, Azazel growls.

Chapter Twenty-Seven: Ash

"What do you want with Syrra?" I ask, moving closer to the bars so I can see the woman. She turns to me with a cold smile that makes my heart pound in my chest. "We have heard rumors that she recently regained the ability to access her full power and we are concerned." "Oh," I mumble. She laughs lightly. "We're not evil Ash, we are simply willing to go to great lengths to keep the world safe," she tells me with a wide grin that reveals a pair of long white fangs. I don't like her, I murmur. You don't? Jax snorts. There's something off about her. What? I don't know. I just don't like her, I growl in frustration. You just think she's pretty, don't you? Jax mutters in annoyance. What! Where did you get that idea? I scoff. You're a terrible liar. I growl. Okay fine I think she's pretty bu

Chapter Twenty-Eight: Jaxon

Thump thump. Thump thump. Thump thump. "Wake up!" Thump thump. "Jaxon please wake up!" Thump thump. "Please wake up." Thump. "Jaxon?" Thump. "Jaxon . . . please . . ." My breath stops in my throat and I gasp and sputter as a metallic liquid fills my mouth. I cough, my lungs stinging and my stomach aching. I slowly pry open my heavy eyelids, spitting out the blood that coats my tongue and dribbles past my lips. I wipe my mouth on my arm and grimace at the bloody streak it leaves on my skin. "Shh just stay still." "What's—" My voice gives out. I cough violently, my entire body convulsing at the force that racks my chest. More blood spatters onto the stone. "Please don't talk—you're going to make it worse." Ash? "I'm right here," he whispers. I can feel his leg beneath my head and his hand gently stroking my hair. What's happening? "The blade has poison in it and he . . . he cut you," my mate murmurs. Am I dying? His sharp inhale pierces my ears like a knife. "Jax plea

Chapter Twenty-Nine: Aurelia

I can barely keep my face from showing any emotion. It's like walking into a nightmare. The smell of blood is so strong I have to cover my nose and breathe through my mouth. Ash holds Jax's body, sobbing hysterically as he tries to keep his mate from injuring himself further. He struggles to keep him still as both are completely covered in blood."Immobilize him," I mutter. The guards open the cell and I watch with a clenched jaw as they have to forcefully remove Ash in order to restrain the dragon king. He screams and thrashes, managing to land a few solid kicks on the guards before they throw him back in. They make sure Jaxon cannot move before locking the cell door once again.I step up to the bars, my hand resting on the cold metal. "A healer is going to come by. Let them help, you understand?"He looks up at me with wide eyes. "I wish I could understand you," he mumbles, sniffing hard as he turns his attention back to his mate.

Chapter Thirty: Kaine

I don't think this can get any more uncomfortable. My gaze flicks between Syrra and Jada—both avidly searching through books on opposite sides of the room.I lean towards my mate with a raised eyebrow. "You know the chance of success would increase if you two worked together."She glares at me. "Well no shit. Does it look like she's willing to work with me though?" She snaps.I look past her to the other side of the library where her cousin is sitting on the floor, her mate standing beside her—I pause. Nix isn't just standing next to Jada, they're standing guard."No it doesn't look like she's willing," I sigh, leaning back against the bookshelves. "So exactly how powerful is she?"Syrra purses her lips in annoyance. "Much more powerful than me with about a century more experience," she mutters under her breath."Then, no offense, but why didn't she just take the throne back from you?" I ask quietly."I prefe
