Chapter 411

The summer went by pretty quickly. Elliott was a lot more open with Brandon about when he was seeing Aurora and when he was just doing whatever other kind of stuff a guy like Elliott has to do, and eventually Brandon came around to the idea that his dad was seeing someone, though I’m pretty sure he never gave up hope that his dad might start wooing his mother again. I had no idea if Amanda would be any more open to the idea of dating a Guardian now than she was all those years ago, but I wasn’t going to be the one to squash Brandon’s dream, so I just tried to stay supportive. Not a lot of hunts were happening because we’d taken out so much of the Vampire population, and I still couldn’t get a handle on Holland’s location, no matter how hard I tried. So we sat around a lot. Any time there was any sort of a hunt at all going on in the four-state area, we were all volunteering and fighting each other to get to go, but those were few and far be

Chapter 412

I’d been working on my math before Aaron arrived, but snooping around in Vampires’ brains seemed like more fun, so I left my work on the coffee table and got comfortable on the couch. I used to have to go on a rooftop at night to have good transmission, but now I can contact whomever I’m looking for from most anywhere—so long as there’s no stupid shield in the way. I closed my eyes, and a moment later, I was in Mika Ito’s head. She knew I was there immediately, which was a little odd. Most of the time, it takes them a second to start to sense that maybe they’re not alone. She didn’t try to push me out, though, only seemed a little freaked out, like she didn’t know what to think about. I giggled as I went about prodding, poking through her memories, looking for anything questionable, anything that might lead me to Hines or Holland.I saw how she’d been turned. It really was an innocent scratch in a nightclub. S

Chapter 413

My sister was so not happy about the Eidolon Festival. She was already beginning to panic a little bit about the wedding, and then, when she found out Aaron was going to be leaving a few days before it, she became this giant ball of nerves that just couldn’t seem to get a grip on anything. I felt sort of sorry for her, but every time I asked her if she needed any help with anything, she just said she had it under control.I was elated when Aaron decided that I could travel with the team to West Virginia, even though he’d given me a big fat no on actually attending the festival itself. I get it—I’m more Hunter than Vampire, and I can’t just choose when I want to be whichever one suits my purpose. At least I was going to be able to go on the trip. That was much better than staying back in Shenandoah watching my mom try to make Cadence look like she was calm.It was great to be able to see my other best friend, Emma, for a few days while we w

Chapter 414

The plane descended in the West Virginia sky, and I prepared to get off, trying to assure myself that the feeling in the pit of my stomach was just anxiety. I hadn’t been on too many hunts away from home. Maybe I was just nervous. Or maybe it was the wedding. I was the maid of honor after all. There was just a lot going on, so I could explain away my emotions by telling myself it was something else. But the fact that I didn’t know where Holland was and hadn’t for months was a huge concern to me. At least her airplanes hadn’t moved. We piled into twin black SUVs and headed to the bed and breakfast my mom had picked out for the team. It was nice to stay in a house instead of a hotel. The Queen Anne was one of the only places in town large enough for all of us, and my mom had made the owner an offer she couldn’t refuse to cancel her existing reservations and accommodate all of us instead. That way, we were also assured there wouldn’t be anyone

Chapter 415

We had our meeting in a library upstairs, which was way cooler than either of the conference rooms we had back in KC. We were all sitting on plush, velvet couches, rather than hard wooden chairs. It smelled like old books and fresh flowers, and I might’ve actually fallen asleep on Brandon’s shoulder if I wasn’t so worried about whatever it was going on in my gut. Not that the meeting was boring or anything; it was just most of it didn’t really pertain to me because I wouldn’t be going along. From what I ascertained, Eidolon Festivals are pretty simple to work. You just stand around for the most part. If you see a Vampire doing something you think is sketchy, then you calmly approach and investigate the situation. Don’t assume any harm was intended until you find out for sure. That’s basically it. The thing would start at 2:00 and last until sunrise, so it wasn’t even that long. The Guardians would be headed out around 1:00 just

Chapter 416

As difficult as it was, I didn’t bother to try to talk Brandon out of going to the Eidolon Festival. I was just being silly, thinking something might happen, and I needed to let it go.He got his weapons together, and I couldn’t help thinking how cool he looked with his leather jacket on, checking his Glocks and sliding them into their holsters. What high school girl wouldn’t want to date someone who looks like a secret agent? Just to be even, I holstered my own Glock, which I’d set down on his dresser earlier in the afternoon. I didn’t need it for anything, but it didn’t hurt to have it on, and I thought he might feel better knowing I was armed in case something went wrong.I walked downstairs with the Guardians and Ashley. I looked around for my sister but she wasn’t there. Aaron caught me and said, “She’s asleep.”“Oh.” It was too bad that she wasn’t going to be there to tell them g

Chapter 417

Cadence was still asleep, but she was tossing and turning a little, so I thought maybe she’d wake up soon. It seemed like forever since she’d gone to sleep from what I could tell. I wanted her to wake up so I could confess that I wasn’t feeling good about this whole situation. I knew I could just shake her, and she’d wake up in a second, but that seemed rude. So I sat on the foot of the bed and stared out the window at the moon. I decided to do one more round of recon to see if any of the Vampires around us knew anything fishy about the blood moon, but that wasn’t helping. I was even using the IACs as a tool to access new minds. All any of the Vampires at the festival seemed to care about was having a good time.My sister finally sat up at about 2:15. I glanced at her only long enough to make sure she was really awake as she wiped her hand across her face and blinked a few times. “Oh, good. You’re alive after all,” I joked, thou

Chapter 418

Out of nowhere, everything went black. I felt my eyes roll to the back of my head, and I started vibrating almost as rapidly as that stupid orb in the sky. I felt my sister’s arms around me, which was a good thing because otherwise I might’ve fallen over right there. My body felt like it was attached to a jackhammer, it was shaking so hard, and then I felt my feet lift off of the floor. I needed to get there.... I needed to go through that opening.... I need to be inside of the moon....My feet hit the floor hard, jarring my eyes open, and I realized I wasn’t shaking anymore. I was staring into my sister’s brown eyes, and it took a me a moment to even remember where I was. “What happened?” I asked, trying to remember. Something about the moon....“I don’t know, but it wasn’t normal,” Cadence said, her hands on my arms. “Are you okay?”I looked down and was glad to see my feet were planted on

Chapter 419

I nodded in agreement with my sister, thinking that getting to the Eidolon Festival ourselves as soon as possible was the right thing to do. I was ready to run out the door right that second, but she needed a moment to get her Glock and tie her boots. She looked at me quizzically. “Where’s your weapon?”I pulled open my jacket. “In its holster.”Cadence rolled her eyes at me, like she had had no idea I had been armed and dangerous this whole time. She stood up and wandered around for a second, patting her pants. “Keys... keys....”I grabbed them off of the dresser and tossed them to her. She was driving me crazy. Like we were just going down to the Piggly Wiggly to grab some milk. “Come on, let’s go!”Cadence motioned at the door, and I flew out of it first, almost running right into Ashley. Great, another obstacle.“Oh, hey! Glad you’re both still awake. Something weird seems

Chapter 420

Ashley popped her head between my sister and I. “What’s happening?” she asked, and I realized she had no idea what was going on, like none at all. She’d missed out on my little dance with the moon, and it probably hadn’t occurred to her that there was even an eclipse tonight, though I thought Aaron might’ve mentioned it during our meeting.“We don’t know,” Cadence admitted.I turned to Ashley to say more, but there really wasn’t much else to say, so I didn’t. I stayed in Hannah’s head and watched her as she and the others did as Cadence had said—rounding up Vampires, searching for Guardians, questioning anyone who looked suspicious.... It was all a chaotic mess, and I wished my sister could somehow drive even faster than she already was. When we pulled into the field next to the Eidolon Festival, Cadence dodged several parked cars to stop as close to the entryway as possible, and we al
