Chapter 21

** Note - Scenes of a sexual nature and abuse ** "I am colour-blind,Coffee black and egg white,Pull me out from inside,I am ready,I am ready,I am ready,I am,Taffy stuck and tongue tied,Stuttered shook and uptight,Pull me out from inside,I am ready,I am ready,I am ready,I am fine." As the song played, Belle felt her stomach shrinking and her heart breaking. It was the first time she'd heard it since listening to it on repeat after splitting up with her ex-boyfriend and love of her life. The memory of the pain hit her like a sledgehammer to the chest. "What the hell is this, Caine?" Damien frowned at his friend's odd music choice. "Leave it on repeat. Trust me," Caine replied, casing a cruel grin in her direction. Damien rolled his eyes. "Nah, I want something lo

Chapter 22

Jess was almost asleep when her phone rang. She rolled over in her bed, frowning at the number she didn't recognise. 'Err... hello?" Jess said. "Jess, it's me, Cat, I need to see you--" "Cat? Wh—what's wrong?" Jess asked, sitting up in her bed and turning on the light. There was something in the girl's voice. Something worrying. 'She sounds like Annabelle,' Jess realised. "Please can I come over? I know it's late," Cat asked. "Erm," Jess looked over at the alarm clock. The little green dial read 10:38 but it was a Friday night and her parents were at a charity function to raise money for the town's library. "Yeah, sure." Cat lived a few streets away. Back in the old days she would sneak over in the night and climb through the window. Today she rang the doorbell like any other visitor.

Chapter 23

"I can't believe she's dead," Mike uttered. He shook his head and looked down at his hands. "It doesn't seem real." Not sure what to say or do in this situation, Sammy gently stroked his back before pulling him in for a hug. "I feel like it's my fault," Mike said. "If I hadn't abandoned her, she might-" "Don't think like that," Sammy warned him. "There's no point in wondering what if. You're barely more than a kid and you don't have any influence over life and death." As Sammy spoke those words, he knew they were a lie. The Hexers held Grace's life in their hands and they had chosen to let her die. Even as he comforted the boy at his side, he was aware of how easily he could turn it around and force him to suffer to death as Grace had done. 'We had no way of knowing what Grace would do,' Sammy told himself to ease the guilt. 'Plus, we were going

Chapter 24

** Authors note: If you are following this story and enjoy it, please do leave a review to let me know! ** Belle opened her emails to find her Course Tutor had sent her three messages. The first and second asked if everything was okay. The third inquired as to whether she was still intending to complete her studies. "I have to go into University today," Belle spoke up quietly, fearing his response. He was searching for a book, pulling clothes and empty crisp wrappers from under his bed. Breathing heavily, he paused his search to face her. "What?" "I, erm, I'm going to get kicked off my course if I don't go to Uni today," Belle told him. "So?" he asked before continuing to search. "Bingo!" he smiled, pulling the book from a drawer. "You could ditch school for a day and come with me?" Belle offered in a

Chapter 25

Belle peeked over at Danny's laminated schedule—the same exact sheet she'd lost after the first week. She groaned, seeing they had small group meetings next. It was easy enough to hide the high school goth in a lecture hall with over two hundred bodies, but in a group of ten, he might be a tad more obvious. "Do you mind hanging out in the union for a bit? I have a small group thingy." Belle winced apologetically as she asked the question. "Whatever, but you can buy me something to drink," Damien demanded. She dropped him off at the Student Union, finding him a phone charger and a comfortable table near a plug socket. The little sign said 'laptops only' but Belle had never been one for following rules. She stopped at the bar to grab him an energy drink before running off to the classroom. 'I should have got one for myself,' she thought, beginnin

Chapter 26

Jess waited at the school gates for Damien until the bell rang. The wind whipped her long hair around her face as she stood up on her tiptoes, scanning the streets for any sign of him. Resigning herself to the fact he wasn’t going to show, she followed the other stragglers inside, taking her phone out to text him. "Phone!" the Vice Principal barked. Jess hung her head and put it back in her pocket, hurrying to class under the watchful eye of the authoritarian Vice. Her usual seat in the science lab was at the back and in the corner, the farthest—and safest—point from her fellow students. Today, Ricky grabbed her arm and pulled her toward his bench on the second row. "Sit," he demanded in a tone that reminded her of Damien. 'I'm not your dog,' Jess thought, yet she sat without putting up any argument. "What the fuck is going on?" Ric

Chapter 27

** Warning - This chapter contains dipictions of abuse and sexual abuse - if this is a trigger for you it's possible to skip the chapter and still follow the story (and just imagine the depths of Belle's despair) ** Watching Damien drink a glass of water, it dawned on Belle she'd had nothing to drink or eat since the energy drink before the bus journey. "Aww, are you thirsty?" the observant boy cooed with false sympathy. "Come here." Her scabbed knees burned from friction against the rug as she crawled over to him. "Open your mouth," he demanded before taking a giant sip. He leaned forward and spat a steady stream of tepid water into her mouth. It didn't quench her thirst, but at least her throat felt a little less like the arid plains of Death Valley. "I've decided you're not coming to dinner tonight," he informed her. "You pissed me off las

Chapter 28

Sammy cracked his knuckles as he waited at the school gate for the bell. Both his mother and sister hated this habit, so when they weren't around it became worse. "You'll get arthritis," Mike warned. Sammy flashed him a sour look. "Spell arthritis." He felt a buzz of satisfaction as Damien chuckled and Mike's cheeks reddened. It was cruel, picking on the boy's lack of academic ability, and a rather cheap shot by all accounts. Still, it was nice to be the bully rather than the victim. Damien had his slave girl on a leash as usual. The other students had almost completely stopped gawking and commenting on it. Poor Belle was just part of the school scenery now, like the kid with the skin condition and the guy with the bright ginger afro. Sensing his attention, she looked up with misty, dead eyes. Her cheeks were drawn and pale, as though Damien had been starving her. He noticed how

Chapter 29

"I'm going to do it tonight, I promise," Sammy huffed, throwing up his arms in defeat as they approached. Jess smiled warmly and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Thank you, Sammy," she said. "You don't have to thank me. I'm doing it for him. As much as I like having him about... it's not fair on him. I think I'm starting to love him, so you know, I have to let him go." Sammy rolled his eyes. "That is how the saying goes, right?" "I still can't quite believe it," Ricky said. "Who would have thought Damien could cast a real, working spell?" "Me either," Jess agreed. "I swear I didn't think it was going to be anything more than harmless fun." She had explained the entire situation to Ricky, everything from the night of the spell up to his point. Luckily, though unfortunately for him, he had already been feeling the effects of the spell, so convincing him hadn&rsq

Chapter 30

Jess searched for a bell or a knocker before making a fist and pounding on the wood. She heard fumbling inside before the guy answered. "You must be Ricky and Jess," he said, opening the door wide to let them enter. "He's like an older Damien," she whispered to Ricky, seeing the guys hairstyle, black clothing, and piercings. "Thank you for agreeing to see us," Jess said. "We really appreciate it." "Oh no, don't thank me. I'm intrigued by what you told me. Would you like a drink?" "Black coffee, no sugar," Ricky said without a moment’s hesitation. Jess shook her head out of politeness but immediately regretted it when she realised a tea would be nice. She was both thirsty and in dire emotional need. Nothing put her at ease quite like a good cuppa. "Are you sure?" he asked, raising his eyebrows. "Please don't say no out of politeness."
