Chapter 39

Beth skipped down the corridor, which was no small feat considering she was carrying an armful of books. She hummed a joyous tune as she went; she was engaged to a good man! Finally! In the months since she'd become eligible, her suitors had been of increasingly questionable character. It was ironic. She had always dreamed of being rescued from an evil dragon by a gallant knight. Instead, she had been rescued from an evil knight by a gallant dragon. And despite being a dragon, Seth seemed as wonderful as any man.And -- if the stories were true -- she was in for quite a treat on their wedding night. She felt a familiar sensation in her loins at the thought. Her fingers were nice, but her maids were clear that fingers were no match for a man who knew what he was doing. She hoped Seth knew, but she was more than willing to let him practice on her after they were married. She imagined lying in bed as her gallant dragon lay on top of her kissing her and

Chapter 40

The ice cold water hit Seth like... well, a bucket of ice cold water."Get up boy!" a voice said.He snapped awake and leap out of bed. It took almost a second for him to get his bearings, and when he did he realized it was still dark outside. He had been sleeping in the trainee barracks of The Bank. It looked like a medieval version of every barracks he'd ever seen in a movie."We're burning daylight, now stop wasting time," Heinrich said.Seth shivered and instinctively shook much of the water off like a dog or cat would. The action peppered the entire room in water, much to the consternation of those who hadn't been woken by the commotion."It's time for training," Heinrich said."But it's still dark outside," Seth yawned.WHACK!Heinrich's fist smashed into the side of his face and knocked Seth clean off his feet because he wasn't ready for it."What was that for!?" he shouted as h

Miranda watched the ceremony from the balcony as everyone in the temple below rose to their feet. The building was constructed entirely of whitewashed stone and adorned with gold implements, including candle stands and torch sconces. The many massive windows bathed the entire room in the light of the afternoon sun. A single massive stained glass window depicting the great God Illuminar radiating light dominated the head of the temple. The wealthiest members of the town occupied most of the sanctuary. They sat on comfortable padded pews while the few commoners lucky enough to be inside were crammed into the back, which was standing room only.Moments later, the music began and Beth came walking down the aisle in a long white dress. Her face was beaming and there seemed to be a spring in her step. Miranda couldn't help but smile at the joy on Beth's face... but she was utterly disgusted by her too.The cognitive dissonance was overwhelming.

Chapter 42

Samuel paused to examine his reflection in a storefront window. He adjusted the line of his suit and finger combed his hair back off his forehead. His eyes locked on the strand of silver hair among the dark brown hair on his head that started at the beginning of his part and swept across his head and back along the right side. His dark brown eyes, well spaced and deep, were set in a face that while not handsome was still considered very attractive.Everything had to be perfect tonight, tomorrow would be the full moon and he would have to be on the packs hunting ground in the hills of West Virginia for the next 5 days. The cycle of the full moon made his life difficult, at best, and sometimes impossible. Samuel was a werewolf, but unlike the werewolves of legend his pack did not hunt humans, they hunted on the pack preserve to quench the hunger that overtook them during the cycle. Samuel would be joining his father, mother and siblings along with the rest of the pack at th

Chapter 43

"You are most kind and gracious, and we are grateful for the assistance," Lord Borden replied, although he didn't look remotely grateful."You would do the same for me," Lord Delmar said. "Now, I'm afraid I didn't have time to prepare a proper gift, given the lack of invitation. However, I do have something that any young couple starting out should need, and would like to present my gift."At the words "my gift", the entire gift line almost ran out of the way to make room for Lord Delmar. Judging from the looks of fear and panic on the people in the line, they weren't doing it just to be nice.Lord Delmar waved his hand and one of the soldiers stepped forward. He carried a box that looked like it weighed seventy or eighty pounds, even though it was quite small. Seth didn't need to open the box to know what was inside. It was gold.A lot of gold. The soldier walked up to Seth and Beth, set the box down, and then opened

Chapter 44

“Do you think that you are going to be able to help us in any way?” asked Beth as Red looked at the kids and thought what on earth would make someone kidnap such kids.“I was trying to get out of this place somehow by hanging from the ledge of the window but I only lost a nail in the process,” said Red as softly as she could. All three of them had shared the meal and the cubs had asked her to eat the food because they said they had eaten earlier.“Why were you taken from home?” Red suddenly asked and Taylor looked at his sister and then Beth nodded. Red was getting the subtle indication that it was Beth who made sure that Taylor did not say anything which would be wrong or get them into trouble. These two might be twins and they were certainly depending on each other in that way.“I think they want something which our Dad has. Our Dad is in a pretty important position and we are the most important people in his life apar

Chapter 45

She didn't want to.She closed her eyes and savored how it had felt. She felt so submissive, but also protected and cared for. The dragon might have dominated her, but there was no malice and no intent to hurt; only intent to care for and protect. It felt like almost like a dream...Her dream...Then she remembered.Just as their bond had finished, a fantasy flashed through her mind. Her, lying naked and helpless while Ethan made love to her as a dragon. She had indulged the fantasy throughout dinner, but never thought it would actually come true.Beth felt the mattress shift and the dragon crawled up on the bed. She kept her eyes closed, but could feel him hovering over her. They weren't touching, but she could feel his breath on her neck and somehow sense his body above hers."Open your eyes," the dragon within Ethan commanded.Beth knew what he was demanding. He wanted her to open them so he could take c

Chapter 46

Red’s Memory"We've got to get out of here..."Crimson Devencourt stumbled out of the parlour and up the old set of servant's steps which ran around the back of the house, avoiding the main part of the building."Come on, Mary!"She grabbed at the young maid's sleeve, dragging her along behind, the two women finding it hard to run in their long skirts, but after everything they had just witnessed, they were determined to at least try.Their footsteps echoed hollowly on the cold stone floor as they skittered like two frightened shadows up towards the first floor of the grand old house in which they lived, the estate having been home to the Devencourt family for seven generations. The study was where Robert- Crimson's husband of two months- had said to meet them, before he and the other men of the house had gathered any weapons they could find, and had set off after whatever it was that had left the bloody remains of the sculler

Chapter 47

He looked calmly out at the view, as if it were a nice spring morning and he had just risen from a peaceful slumber to admire his house and gardens. He gazed across the hills and the nearby forest, then up at the brilliant full moon, blazing down from the thick black velvet sky. But as his eyes flicked back to face his enemy, they were no longer the cool and friendly shade of blue they had previously been, instead they flashed a vivid amber for a second; wide and savage and inhuman."You chose the wrong man to mess with," Robert snarled, shuddering as he felt his whole body tense, a sharp yet somehow comforting pain running down the back of his spine as he craned his neck upwards and closed his eyes. He had never done this before, but before his father had died, he had told him that when the time came, he would have to willingly accept their own curse to protect the ones he held dear, even if it meant risking being injustly hunted for the crimes of another. The

Chapter 48

Anthiel knocked on the door of Ale's apartment. It was a few hours after sundown, but she hoped she would still be awake. Nobody answered so she knocked again. And again. Finally, Ale replied. "Go away.""It's Anthiel,""Go away," she repeated, though less firmly.Anthiel thought for a moment, then reached into her satchel and pulled out a small flute. It took her a moment to remember what Ale has said was her favorite song. Her mother would sing an old Elvin lullaby to her when she wasn't feeling well, and Anthiel thought that was a perfect fit. She started playing, and it took only a minute for her to open the doors. She looked decidedly the worse for wear. Her rich chocolate-brown hair was a tangled mess, her green dress was rumpled, and her eyes betrayed signs of crying."Oh, dear girl," she said while folding the wood elf into a motherly hug. Ale didn't say anything for a minute, so she just held her c
