Bothered

Cadence made her way to the apartment Brandon shared with Elliott and was about to knock on the door when she remembered she’d said she’d speak to her mother. Since Liz Findley didn’t have one of those “eye computers” as she put it, Cadence decided to take the elevator one floor down and speak to her mother herself, in person. It might actually be faster than her cell phone.“Hey!” Brandon shouted after her as she was about to board the elevator. “What’s up?”“Sorry!” Cadence stopped and turned back, taking a few steps in his direction. “Cass and I were going to chat in your apartment, but I remembered I need to go talk to Mom first. I’ll be back.”“Okay. Where is Cass? Still talking to Aaron Burr’s side project?” He snickered like the fact that he hadn’t been killed by a friend and brought back from the dead somehow made him a better catch than the

Sneaking Around

Hearing familiar voices coming from the apartment, Cadence decided not to knock and wasn’t surprised when she was able to open the door. Brandon and Cassidy were sitting on the sofa while Tara, Dax, and Lucy were sitting on the loveseat and chair respectively, a couple of pizzas on the coffee table. The teens didn’t even end their conversation as she walked in, though it didn’t matter since Cadence had no idea what they were talking about. Something about birds, blindfolds, and a river. “Hey, Cass, Mom wants you home soon, so can I interrupt?”“Sorry,” her sister said, as Dax finished his sentence, and no one jumped in with another comment, at least not while Cadence was asking for quiet. “What is it?”Cassidy didn’t seem agitated, just preoccupied. Cadence dropped down to the armrest near her, though she’d be speaking across Brandon. She glanced around at the others and decided it wasn’t anything

Deep Thoughts

Brandon waited patiently on the other side of the door leading to the rooftop of the new recruits apartment building, listening. It was the same routine as usual. Whenever Cassidy went up there to find some solace so she could eavesdrop on the Vampires, he always waited for her here. Juan Diego had even brought another chair and left it for him, which was quite considerate of the custodian, but Brandon rarely used it. Most of the time, he stood with his ear pressed to the door, waiting to hear if his girlfriend was in any distress or if she needed him. She usually only spent ten or fifteen of her allotted thirty minutes actually in her trance, and then she’d let him know over the IAC she was done. Sometimes, he’d have to go in and get her. He distinctly remembered the time she’d been trapped in Holland’s head, right before they’d gone to Melbourne, and he’d had to shake her fairly violently to get her back. That episode had scared the shit out of

Pained

The pains in Asteria’s abdomen were sharp, as if she was being clawed apart from the inside out. She gritted her fangs, nearly ripping a hole in the side of her own mouth and stretched her back, running a hand along the bulge in her stomach, waiting for the moment to pass. Thoughts of calling for the doctor, if Hines could even be labeled as such, crossed her mind, but she knew this was only a growing pain, not anything to be too alarmed about, so she rested her head back on the red satin pillowcase and took a few more deep breaths. The girl had been there again. She’d felt her in her head. And this time, Asteria had been in too much pain to ward her off, which meant, after all of these weeks of keeping her secret from her enemy, they would know. She’d hoped to prevent them from finding out until after the delivery since Hines thought it shouldn’t be too much longer, perhaps a month’s time at most, but since keeping them in the dark was no longer

Impossible

“Are you sure?” Cadence asked for about the fifth time, still staring at her younger sister like she’d just said she was growing a second head. “A baby?”“Yes, I’m positive, Cadence!” Cassidy practically screeched. “I know it’s supposed to be impossible, but I’m certain. She’s pregnant.”“But… that’s impossible,” Cadence repeated. She wasn’t sure why she didn’t believe it. After all, everything she’d assumed to be true about the world up until she was nineteen years old hadn’t been the case, so why was the idea that a Vampire could be pregnant so hard to absorb?“We’ve been over this,” Brandon, who was being snarky, chimed in from his spot in the armchair across Cadence’s living room. “She’s certain. So what now?”“I don’t know,” Cadence admitted. “I mean, obviously

Not Right

“Holland is pregnant?” Aaron asked.“Well, not Cass!” She wasn’t sure if the statement coming out of her mouth was meant to be funny, sarcastic, or mean, It was none of those things. It was ignored.“No, that’s not possible.”“Yeah, that’s what I said, but… she’s sure.”Aaron shook his head. “It can’t be. It’s not possible.”“Are you sure? I mean, we thought a Guardian couldn’t kill a Hunter, too, didn’t we? And this whole bit with the serum? We didn’t think it would do anything. What about the rest of the crazy things going on? I think just about anything is possible right now.”He only stared at her for a long moment, still not accepting the information she’d provided, so Cadence decided to give up. Maybe he didn’t believe her because he couldn’t. Maybe he knew his own capacity better than a

Have to Fix Him

Cadence’s eyebrows perked up. “That’s not a bad idea. He did say something about us being worried about him just made it worse.”“Okay, I’ll talk to her. Can’t hurt.”She nodded, hoping that would fix things, at least temporarily. She had a feeling, though, until Holland was gone, none of it would matter.“You need to get some sleep, kid. I know how you are when you’re cranky. Jamie might end up sticking that needle right into your jugular to shut you up.”Knowing he was teasing she forced out a chuckle. “Thanks. Okay.”He grabbed the beer can off of the coffee table and chugged down the rest of it. “Man, it’s quiet up here. You should come down to my place. Never a dull moment.” He stood, crushing the can, and carrying it to the kitchen.“Do you want us to find Brandon another apartment?” she yelled after him. There was an empty one n

See You on the Other Side

Normally, the sound of Cadence’s laughter made Aaron’s heart feel warm and instantly brought a smile to his face. It was the sort of sound that could brush away all of his problems, at least for a moment, but when it echoed off of the hallway walls outside of the operating room, it did nothing at all to affect his disposition. He knew something was very wrong, but he had no idea what it might be, and despite all of his friends’ concern and offers to help, the cloud that hung over him continued to seep into his core, making him feel like he was part of the thundercloud itself. Acknowledging it, looking for assistance in making it go away, would be a show of weakness, and he just couldn’t bring himself to admit that there was a problem. He didn’t bother to knock on the open door. The laughter stopped the second he walked in, and those concerned expressions immediately filled the faces that looked up at him. Cadence and Elliott were both on hospital

A Moment of Normal

Aaron dropped down so that he was crouching next to her at eye level. Part of him wanted to remind her that she could get up and walk away right now, but he knew she wanted this, and if he suggested such a thing, it would only make her angry, not deter her. “Hey, beautiful. You’re okay,” he said quietly. Cadence’s eyes widened, and across her, in his peripheral vision, he could see Jamie finding the vein in her arm. “You’ve got this. You’re going to be just fine.”Jamie pressed down, and Cadence immediately started to sob. Reaching up, Aaron smoothed back her hair. “You’re okay. It’s okay. Take some slow, steady, deep breaths.” He could feel the pain himself now, and it was burning like fire. But it wasn’t having the same effect on him as it did on her. Jamie picked up the second syringe. “You’ll be asleep in a minute and it’ll all be over.”“It… hurts&hel

Different

Cadence could feel herself slowly coming back to her body, a strange tingling sensation taking over her extremities. It was nothing at all like the last time she’d been given Transformation serum. That time it had seemed like waking up from a long sleep. This time, she had the feeling her body was reawakening, as if it had rebuilt itself while she was away, and now it was welcoming her home. She had the idea that she’d been dreaming, though she couldn’t say what those dreams might’ve consisted of. Something about Holland, she thought, maybe about her sister. Perhaps about the moon. None of it would come back to her, try as she might to put the fragmented photographs together, so that by the time her eyelids began to flutter, she may as well not have been dreaming at all. When Cadence’s eyes came open, she was greeted with near darkness. She realized she had a monitor hooked up to her, and it was beeping steadily. She wondered what had caus
