CHAPTER 41

Once she arrived in the living room, Isabelle witnessed an astonishing scene, something she didn't see every day. Chris was hugging and kissing his wife, Richard, and Christine, whom she hadn't known officially since she came to work at the villa, were holding their little girls, covering them with little kisses and hugging them tightly. Billy, who started to grow a nice, very chic beard, was talking and laughing with his mother. The only people out of place at this time were her and her father who kept drinking, sitting on the couch. This happy moment belonged to the Grayson family, so she tried to get close to her father to ask him to leave.“Belle!”          Billy shouted loud her nickname and that scared her a bit. Hearing Billy, Andrew raised his head to better foll

CHAPTER 42

The last words were a direct message for Marie and Chris and they started smiling. Isabelle’s cheeks turned red. It was so embarrassing the shameful way her father was pushing her into Billy Grayson's arms. But Billy found this idea rather interesting since he also thought the same things about him and Belle."Your words are music to my ears," he replied, looking closely at Andrew. “I was thinking of inviting Isabelle to the theater Saturday night. We can have dinner first and then go and see a nice show.” He turned to Isabelle. “I know you like music a lot and I'd love to go with you and see a musical. I promise you that I will behave like a real gentleman and we won't be late.”          A slight smile appeared on Marie's lips. Her son certainly wasn’t wasting time in small talk. But Isabelle's express

CHAPTER 43

Andrew and Isabelle got out of the car in front of the entrance. Lucy came out of the house to greet them. Isabelle smiled at her. She wanted so much to hug her, but she knew that her father was annoyed by these signs of affection between her and the housekeeper. Lucy showed the driver where to take the suitcase. Then John got into the car and returned to the villa. Isabelle looked at him with a narrow heart. She wanted to get back in the car and leave with him, but instead, she closed the door and followed her father to have yet another conversation about the same argument."Billy likes you a lot," Andrew said as he entered the living room. “You absolutely have to reassure him! I have a couple of ideas that could bring me a lot of money and I need him and Chris by my side in order to make it. It would be even more interesting if he would become my son-in-law. You're old enough

CHAPTER 44

The elevator doors were opening and Shawn was preparing to enter when his cousin's voice stopped him. He turned and looked at Billy. The two of them had spoken little since the return of Billy and Chris from Europe’s trip. Shawn didn't like the fact that his cousin was dating Andrew Baldwin's daughter. He was hoping that, since she no longer worked at the villa, that their little story would die the way that it was born... suddenly. He smiled at Billy and walked slowly towards him.“What’s wrong, Bill? Can I help you with something?” he asked his cousin. “I’m a bit short of spare time, I have to go and see Danielle. For Saturday night she has a special date in mind. There is a premiere at the Golden Gate Theater...”"You and I have an unfinished conversation and I think that it's time to put all our cards on

CHAPTER 45

Chris walked toward his son and looked at him carefully. He squinted just a little and he shook his head slightly. He was a little surprised by what Billy had just told him.“I didn't know you were so much into Andrew's daughter. In fact, your way of acting around her the other day seemed strange and a little exaggerated. I didn't know you were interested in her.”"I like Isabelle, dad, I like her a lot, but we will never be more than friends. She doesn't love me; she will never love me.""So, why are you..." Chris began talking but stopped when he saw a strange sparkle in his son's eyes. Oh, now I’ve got it... You're playing God right now. I don't think it's very clever of you to tease Shawn this way.”“Look, dad, these days I&r

CHAPTER 46

There could be heard a strange noise in the room... a weird song. Isabelle opened her eyes and looked everywhere around her trying to figure out what was the noise she was hearing. Maybe it came from outside... sometimes the stable guys while working were listening to music on the radio. The little song was still going on and Isabelle rose from her armchair. The noise seemed to be coming from her desk drawer. Isabelle opened it, but at this point, the noise stopped. The only thing Isabelle saw was the cell phone Marie had given her. The display was on and she took it and read what was written on it: ‘you have 3 missed calls’ and ‘you have 3 new messages’. All of them were from Marie. Isabelle had been home for three days and she remembered that she hadn’t called Marie yet as she had promised her before leaving the villa. Isabelle had put the cell phone in the drawer and forgotten

CHAPTER 47

Once out of the room, Isabelle closed the door and leaned against the wall. She was trembling violently. This reaction wasn’t the result of fear, it was the consequence of the anger and frustration she was feeling at that moment. Until a few days ago this reaction was always caused by her discussions with Shawn... And now, the arguments with her father had the same effect on her. Isabelle felt so tired of this constant humiliation on her father’s part, but she knew that she couldn’t continue arguing with him, that all this could lead him to have a stronger crisis or could lead to his… death.          After this last confrontation with him, Isabelle realized that her father will never be the same as before. His headaches had become more frequent, causing the man he had been until a few years ago to vanish completely. She remember

CHAPTER 48

The hospital continued to be a place that kept sending chills down to Isabelle’s spine. The last time an ambulance had brought her father here, all their lives had been changed forever... and not for the better. At least, this time the situation was under control, as the paramedics had managed to stabilize Andrew after she had given him CPR. One of the paramedics had told her that by doing it, she was the one who had saved her father's life. Once they arrived in the emergency room, her father went through all the check-ups. Because of the fall down the stairs that Andrew had seven years ago, the doctors decided to do a CT, just to be sure that everything was alright. Dr. Jones, the neurologist who treated her father the night of his accident, was still working there and he was paged immediately.          After asking Andrew a couple of routine questions, Dr. Jones left the patient under the

CHAPTER 49

Isabelle closed her eyes and felt a cold shiver running down her spine. She remembered all the times she had asked her father to see a doctor about the headaches. Even now, she could hear his hateful words, his violent language against her and against Lucy."If he had come sooner to see me, maybe I could’ve done something." Dr. Jones got up too, walked towards her, and put his hand on her shoulder. “Dear girl, I may seem too harsh, but I have to tell you what’s going on. I don't want to give you false hope. I'm not that kind of person. You have to know that this tumor will take away your father and it would be pretty quick. But I promise you that I will do everything in my power to keep your father from suffering too much.”          She looked at the doctor with eyes full of tears. She wa

Once they’ve got back to the ranch the next morning, Isabelle prepared Andrew's new room. After what happened lately, she had managed to convince her father to move into the guest room on the ground floor. It was still a big and comfortable room and was near the small sitting room that Andrew had the habit of using as his ‘office’, where he was planning the fate of the world. At this point, Isabelle was very convinced that all her father was doing in this room was to drink and to fantasize about things that would never happen.          The rest of the week went away without too much stress. Strangely, her father behaved in a very… fatherly way and even his headaches seemed to have disappeared forever thanks to the new treatment prescribed by doctor Jones who kept in touch with her even after allowing Andrew to lea
