The Assassin's Demonstration Part 3

Mora returned to the tent to find her gone and thought it strange. She started searching the camp; no one had seen Sylvia leave the tent. The camp became as busy as a beehive. Torches were lit and men dragged away from anything else to begin looking for her. Sylvia heard the noise and came back to find out what was going on and cursed. It was a chore getting back into her tent without being seen and even more so getting back out again after she changed her clothes. She got far enough out of camp and then came running back asking what was going on. The men settled down and Ian asked her where she had been. "I needed some time alone." Ian asked both her and Mora to follow him into a vacant tent."What do you mean not telling one of us when you are leaving the camp, Sylvia?" he asked urgently. It was obvious that he had not been worried for her safety, but everyone else had.

Homecoming

Chapter 22 Homecoming  "Take off your boots and cloak, Mikail. I’ll not have you making more work for Rachel by tracking the road dust through the manor.""It’s good to see you, too, Ansel, ten of my men are in the stables bedding the horses. We have yet to take our evening meal, will

Homecoming Part 2

It took four days for Sylvia to be well enough for them to move again. When she was, they pampered her until she made Ian order them to stop. "Sylvia, they love you as much or more than they loved Victor," Ian told her, "Give them some slack.""I have. I can’t stand it anymore.""It was only two days."She gave him a look that could have wilted a rose and he went to tell the men to treat her the way they had before this cycle. They had trouble adjusting back to that until they saw her in the ring with Ian, continuing her training. They were still a week away from Chadwick manor, and Sylvia still did not know where they were going. General Tane’s men did not know, either. They still thought him a common man who had done well in the army and had been rewar

Lord Chadwick

Chapter 23 Lord Chadwick  Mora and Sylvia usually rode behind the carriage Mora had brought with her. Mikail had requested that they ride in it, but Sylvia didn’t like to most of the time because she felt like she was inside of a cage. Within the week, they were passing Ian and Mora’s manor. Sylvia commented on how beautiful it was and wondered why they were passing it. So many believed that Mikail had grown up on Ian’s lands that even Sylv

Lord Chadwick Part 2

"I have told him ... he would have figured it out, anyway. He has vowed to keep our secret." She scowled at him, but thought that if Mikail trusted him, it must be all right."Please address me only as Mikail’s bride or by my name. I aspire to be no higher than the man I marry," she said cautiously. Ansel smiled and bowed again. She turned to Mikail, "I believe you have yet to address your regiment." He offered her his arm and the three of them adjourned to the hall where a feast was to take place as soon as Mikail was finished informing his men as to what he truly was – aside from their general and trusted leader. The clamor of everyone talking at once died down as Mikail entered the room with Sylvia on his arm. Everyone watched as they walked through the crowd to the center of the room and Mikail hoisted himself onto a table so he coul

Lord Chadwick Part 3

"What now?" Ian answered. Mikail looked up, too worried at this point to be startled by anything. It was comforting to see Ian standing there."She intends to expose herself to the entire regiment," Mikail sounded as though the world were coming to an end. It hit Ian almost as hard, but knowing that Mikail needed the support that Ian had given so many times, he didn’t let it show."Mikail, come now. You trained these men. They will listen and understand." He said it in his most reassuring voice and stance. He was good enough that he almost convinced himself that there was nothing to be concerned with."Is Mora with her now?" Mikail asked to change the subject."Yes, she said something about ‘putting things in order’ before she left my side, but I daresay, we will not be deprived of the company of our wive

Sylvia's Revelation Part 2

"When I requested that he be sent to you, I had only his survival in mind. I knew that he had been a burden to his other commanders, but I have a soft spot where he is concerned and would ... well, I am sure you know well what happened." Mikail nodded. "In a war, he was only likely to get himself and others killed with behavior like that, so I requested that you take him. You have a reputation of being able to handle issues like that and I wanted to see my son return from this war alive." He paused and smiled to himself."Since he has left you, I have received complaints about my son," Mikail’s gaze grew sharper, "Complaints that he has taken on some of your attributes that other generals find irritating," he smiled, "He has taken to not using anything better than the rest of the men in his care, refusing extra privileges, and inspiring loyalty to rival only your own among other traits that he has picked up from you.

Sylvia's Revelation Part 3

Emmett was watching with increasing interest. This was indeed explaining much, but where was the connection? If it didn’t get to somewhere these men could understand better, she was never going to wear the dress she and Mora had been making."I never intended to like any of you, but the more I studied our captain and his men, the more I was drawn to you. Finally, after spending time with you, I began to understand your loyalty and honor. I did not intend for any of you to like me, because I knew that it would not be long before I would have to leave you for the sake of the captain’s honor. But you did like me and you taught me to like you all in return. When I did leave, I thought that I would give our captain an out by making it look like I had taken myself prisoner. When that did not work, I thought that if I gave you closure you would all be able to move on with your lives and forget the kid that h

The Gift

Chapter 25 The Gift  The wedding plans proceeded, Sylvia collected the lace from the merchant whose shop she had been in the night Emmett had arrived, the seamstresses finished Mora’s dress and both Ian and Mikail’s outfits. The appointed day drew nearer and nearer until it was finally upon them.
