Chapter 21

Suddenly there was clear space ahead of me and I sat back, my shoulders and arms aching from the tension. Almost immediately Icaan flicked the ship onto autopilot."Nice flying," he said. "I guess you've earned those strawberries."I grinned, not sure what else to do suddenly. It had felt good to be controlling a ship again, guiding it where it needed to go and trusting the instruments and my reflexes. Despite that, I was also glad it was over. There was only so much pressure a person could take before they fouled something up.At the moment I looked good in Icaan's eyes. That was enough."So what's our next stop?" I asked."The market," Icaan replied."But it's another eight days away. Are you really not stopping anywhere in be

Chapter 22

We sat down to eat lunch together, and again I'd prepared us something. It was yet another attempt of mine to make myself seem worth keeping, and Icaan moaned in delight as soon as he tucked into the food."You can definitely handle food well," he replied. "Did you work in some kind of space cafe or something?""No. I waitressed on a planet for a while before I got into space, but I was never allowed near the kitchen. Always out front dealing with customers and taking food and drinks back and forth. One of those massive open area ones where they order at the table and everything is brought to them by a person dressed up."He nodded as if he could picture what I meant, but I knew I didn't want to talk about me."What is it with the Frentin and slaves?" I asked. "You don't seem to think it's bad for t

Chapter 23

Tired, and not sure what to do with myself, I continued to sit in the gunner's seat on Icaan's ship and tried to work out how I could get Icaan to talk more. There had to be some way to get him to open up. But he ignored me, not even flying the ship, but sitting in the pilot's seat anyway."So, what makes a slave valuable?" I asked. "If certain qualities make me worth more and your culture places value on what a slave can do as humans do on their free people, then it sounds like I should know what I can claim to be good at and what skills I might want to get better at."Icaan swiveled the seat around, his eyes a little wider at the question I'd asked. Had I surprised him?"There's a lot of different things," he said, rubbing his chin with his hand while he looked into the distance, thinking.I waite

Chapter 24

The minutes ticked by, our ship beginning to inch ahead after some more rerouting of power from me, and some very impressive flying from Icaan. I'd opted to help him in the end, and see if I could win myself any more favor, but the truth was, if he hadn't been towing my ship we'd have been long gone."Let me power up the engine on my ship and at least vaguely steer it in the right direction.""You can't. I stripped too many parts out. And before you suggest that you could at least lower the resistance it causes I've already set it not to be a burden as much as possible. The extra movement and tweaks you'd be able to make wouldn't do enough for me to trust you over their alone.""It's not like I can steal it," I replied. "It's not working properly."Icaan laughed.

Chapter 25

"It's clear that you were trying to hide something, and I'm willing to bet she's it. If I scan her, what am I going to find? And I warn you, Icaan, you can't afford to break another law while you've still got a debt to deal with."Icaan opened and closed his mouth a couple of times."You won't find a chip," he eventually said, glancing at me with a sadness in his eyes that was hidden again almost immediately.I exhaled, knowing that I was about to be taken by the enforcers."I didn't think so. She'd best come with us then. No doubt the human government will be pleased to get one of their citizens back.""We both know you're not going to return her to the humans," Icaan growled."If she requests to stay with us once we've... show

Chapter 26

The commander looked at me."What do you want us to do now? She's told us the same thing. She should be returned to Icaan.""Do you want to give such a beautiful human back to a stuck up ex royal like him?" the commander asked."Of course not. We'd rather have some fun with them like we normally do and then put them in the system when we've got bored." The enforcer on my left leered at me, but the one on the right looked between the other two men in the room as if he wasn't so sure."They've all been lying in the past though.""It's possible this one is lying too, still. Jarlick?" the commander said, looking to my left. "See if you can get her to sing a different tune. And why not have some fun along the way."The commander toss

Chapter 27

I gulped as Kaemir came closer, still staring at me. The pheromones were still making me far more aroused than normal and I couldn't help but look over his strong muscular body, the bulge of his chest muscles and contours of his arms evident in the tight fitting t-shirt he wore.A part of me wanted him to untie me, take me over to the bed and have his way with me, but I wasn't going to get that unless I declared Icaan to be a criminal. And I had a feeling that would get Icaan into a lot more trouble. The commander had implied that could result in some kind of severe punishment. No matter what happened, I had to keep to the same story. I had to tell them Icaan was innocent. But I really wanted to be screwed, and as Kaemir walked up to me, I didn't have a problem if it was him.He knelt down in front of me and reached out to put his arm

Chapter 28

The corridor outside was empty of life, but Icaan was still careful. Somewhere the commander must have been trying to do something. But what?"Can you wreck something quickly if I can get a panel off?" Icaan asked, looking at me for only a moment before he continued to look down the corridor. I nodded, pretty sure I knew how to break important stuff on most ships. The trick would be finding the right sort of stuff. He moved up the hallway towards the bulk of the ship and nearer more possible enforcers and I followed, not sure whether I should be looking for a panel to start or letting him pick a good spot.As he turned the next corner someone lunged at him, wielding a large wrench. He dodged it and it clanged off the wall. Within seconds the would-be mechanic was also lying on the ground. It looked like the cattle-prod Icaan was using

Chapter 29

Putting the ship on autopilot, Icaan got up and came to me. I'd been crying for a couple of minutes, the fear I'd felt and what the men had done to me so fresh in my mind I wasn't sure what else to do.Slowly I told the story while Icaan crouched beside me and handed me his handkerchief. When I was finally done, I wiped my eyes and tried to calm myself down."I'm sorry," he said. "The enforcers aren't meant to do things like that. No Frentin is meant to abuse the relationship like that.""Well, it's clear they do and have done plenty of times in the past. They didn't hesitate. They use all the human women they find, deliberately overwhelming them with pheromones until they can't say no even if they'd have wanted to."Icaan shook his head and looked away."You must

Chapter 30

"Two million credits? They're making you pay them two million credits just to be forgiven for trying to win a war with the information you had available?""No. I had enough possessions and ships at the time to bring it down to a little over a million. They automatically take everything you have up to half the initial debt value. Thankfully, I inherited this ship later, once my brother's will had gone through, or they'd have taken this too."I sat back, too stunned for words. In some ways it made sense. It was an effective way to stop a lot of people committing a crime, but it also must have stung. He'd been trying to save his brother, and it had gone wrong. He wasn't entirely to blame, that was clear."I'm sorry," I said. "But thank you for telling me.""So you understand why I need to sell you fina
