Thieves came in many different forms. Captain Barrington Braxton stepped to the side of his tent by the crates in the marketplace and folded his arms, his gaze zeroing in on the pretty little thief not far from him. He smoothed his finger and thumb along his mustache and beard as he arched an eyebrow in critical assessment of the thief. In his line of work, he knew the lovely crooks were the most dangerous. The girl was slim, and dressed in the plain brown rags the ruffians wore here in Selcuk, Turkey. Innocence was the expression on her face as she watched his shop. Chuckling to him

Lindsay Lennox crouched behind a stack of baskets. Through the spaces between them, she kept watch for the brawny man’s frame to reappear. He didn’t look like the kind of man who would give up that easily. She doubted her kick to his shin could have injured him that badly. A few years ago, she had wrestled with her brother and even some of his friends, and they stopped only when she bested them. No way could she have bested the handsome man just now. Yet, why wasn’t he crashing through the marketplace searching for her? Holding her breath, she prayed he wouldn’t discover her hiding place. She’d come too close to getting caught, and there was no way she could all

“Are you the son of Edward Braxton who lives in Derbyshire, England?”Barry arched his brow at Governor Lennox. The man stood almost as tall as him, but lacked his build. Instead of muscles, it appeared as though the older man had more fat, especially around his mid-section. Even his cheeks sagged a bit. But it wasn’t his appearance that surprised Barry, it was the way he spoke. The older man sounded as if he’d been raised in England.Barry nodded to the governor. “Aye, I’m his son.”

Barry’s head pounded with impatience as he paced the deck of his ship, the Braxton Quest, the next morning, barking out commands. Although he’d hired a few new men on his crew, most of them had been sailing with him for years. So why couldn’t they get anything right now?“What did you tell me was wrong with the sail?” Barry asked his first mate.Jeffrey shuffled his large feet and tapped

Shock vibrated through Lindsay from everything that was happening. She didn’t want Captain Braxton to see her, and now…now he was being accused of a crime he did not commit. Gasping, she covered her mouth. Should she say something? Obviously, the shopkeeper thought he was doing the right thing, but she couldn’t let the Englishman get taken away when he wasn’t at fault. She was the handsome sea captain’s only hope.Praying for courage, she took a deep breath and cleared her throat, trying to get their

Barry gazed down at the beautiful woman lying on his bed. It didn’t matter if she was a Turkish slave, he liked the fact that she didn’t talk like one. Both times they’d talked, she had intrigued him. He wanted to know what made her do—and say—the things she had. Why was she so different from the other women in Turkey? Perhaps she’d been kidnapped in England and sold to Turkey as a slave when she was younger.Nothing about her made sense, but he’d figure it out later. Right now he needed to care for the unconscious woman who had come back to be with him.

Chills wracked Lindsay’s body, and her mind wouldn’t focus. Perhaps she was still dreaming of Barry. Off in the distance his deep voice calmed her slightly until soon her body grew warmer and her shivers stopped. Her mouth dried, yet she didn’t have the energy to moisten it with a swallow. Through a fog, her mind took her back to the marketplace, back to the moment she’d kissed Barry so passionately. Her heart flipped with happiness, and she wanted to experience that again, and again, and again…But h

Barry couldn’t believe the turn of events. There was no way he could have a woman of royalty on his ship, especially with a crew of nothing but men. Believing Lindsay was a servant would have been vastly different. She could have helped with the cooking, and with the laundry, and she especially could have kept his bed warm at nights. But not now. He wouldn’t be able to touch her in any passionate way, and he for certain wouldn’t get any work out of her. She was used to having servants assist her, not the other way around. All the doubts he’d had when thinking she was a mere servant made sense now. No wonder she acted so different and spoke two languages. She was r

Lindsay’s hands ached. She didn’t dare admit that Barry had been correct when he assumed she wouldn’t know how to do chores. She wanted so badly to learn and do her tasks well. Unfortunately, peeling potatoes for an hour made her fingers hurt, and her bottom was certainly not going to sit on that hard stool for another minute. She assisted the cook, an older bald man who was very cheerful. He talked her ear off…literally. She thought for sure she’d never get tired of a man telling stories about his adventures, but she was ready for the cook to close his trap. If she didn’t hear his voice for the rest of the day, that would please her.

“Now, ye take the garment and scrub it along this board, like this.” Homer demonstrated his instructions on a slap of wood with several grooves cut into it.Lindsay couldn’t understand how that would help. “Mr. Homer—”“Just Homer, Miss.”She smiled at the middle-aged man missing several teeth. “Then you may call me Lindsay.”
