CHAPTER 31

I nodded. "All right, I'll go. But I have nothing to wear!" "It's a funeral, not a fashion show. It's mostly going to be druggies and losers there anyway. It's not like she traveled in a real stylish crowd. You'll be the prettiest girl there no matter what you've got on."I kissed him lightly. "You even know how to make a funeral sound romantic.""I try.""So, Jackson's party, how big are we talking about?" I asked, wanting to get off the subject of dead people. He grimaced. "Could get pretty wild. Jackson has been really restless, so I think he's going go get extremely wasted, a coma is entirely possible. Everyone is invited to this thing. Only problem is, Brenda can't make it. She has a family thing she does the weekend before Halloween, and she can't skip out. Jackson doesn't like to throw a party without scoring."

CHAPTER 32

Tears filled my eyes and I got off the bed. Jackson could tell he'd upset me, so he spoke up. "You remember when I told you that I pressured Brenda into having unprotected sex?" He asked softly.I nodded."Well… pressured isn't the right word… it was more like… forced."I drew in a deep breath. "You raped her?""I don't know if you could really call it rape… it wasn't fully consensual… but… she didn't really fight me…" he sighed. "You want the whole story?""Not if you don't want to tell me," I lied. I wanted to know whether he wanted to share or not."Well, I was drunk, of course… and Brenda and I were fooling around. Things got pretty heated, and she was wearing a little jean skirt, those things are just

CHAPTER 33

I took off my jeans and started to slip into one of the skirts. "Jesus Sophie!" Simon growled."What?" I asked innocently. "He's gay.""That doesn't mean that he doesn't have eyes. You can see everything through those underwear, and while I'm enjoying the view… I don't want anyone else to enjoy it.""Relax, Simon. I'm not looking at her lady parts."I smiled at the look of horror that crossed Simon's features at another guy's mention of his girlfriend's "lady parts"."That one looks good," Wyette commented. "You have killer legs."I beamed at him. "Thanks! What do you think Simon?""I think that Wyette lied about being gay to get you out of your pants!""You're being silly," I told him, crossing th

CHAPTER 34

There weren't many people at the funeral home. We walked into the quiet room and I took in my surroundings. It seemed so peaceful for someone who had lived such a turbulent life. The front row was taken up, and a few people were scattered in the rows behind. Simon and I sat in the middle of the second row. The only people to speak at the funeral were her friends and her mother; no other family members were present. In the middle of a long, awkward silence, Simon stood up and approached the front of the room. As I watched him take the microphone from the stand, I saw the color drain from his face. He cleared his throat, shifting nervously. "I'm Simon," he said. "Caroline's ex-boyfriend… I think it's great you guys showed up."Oh God, he had no idea what he was doing."Some of you might know that I was the one that found Caroline after she shot herself. I read her note,

CHAPTER 35

"Was he at your house last night? Is that who you were drinking with?" "We had one beer. He stayed with me for a little while, I felt lonely. Please don't launch into one of your jealous tirades, baby. Things are going so well."He was silent."Are you pissed?""I'm working on it," he said through his teeth. "I don't want you hanging around him, Sophie. He got Brenda, and that should be enough. He doesn't deserve you, too.""Hanging out and screwing are two different things. Please Simon, just give it a rest… pretty please?"He sighed. "Yeah, all right."I knew that he hadn't let it go. He would be outwardly cool, but suspicion would simmer just below the surface. I was just going to ignore it, though. He could sit there and worry about me having sex with

CHAPTER 36

When we rang the doorbell at Simon's, Jackson answered. He was wearing jeans that looked painfully tight, a big belt, a flannel shirt open at the chest, a bandana around his neck, and a black cowboy hat. A stubble of beard shadowed his jaw. It took every bit of self control I had not to screw him right there. He looked more amazing than I had ever seen him look. He made one hell of a cowboy. "Hey Sophie. Who is your friend?" he asked, standing back from the door to let us in.We went inside. "This is Wyette. He's been here a couple of weeks."Jackson smiled his perfect smile and extended his hand. Wyette stared at it."Shake." I told him.He obeyed, looking into Jackson's green eyes. "Ah… n-nice to meet you.""Did Sophie tell you something bad about me, or what? You seem a little fre

CHAPTER 37

Making it up to me involved a lot of kissing and a lot of roaming hands. I reached up and untied his bandana so that I could kiss his neck. It was like one of those stupid fucking cologne commercials in which girls threw themselves at the guy who'd just sprayed himself with the shit. I had no self-control. "We can't," I whispered. He was nibbling lightly at my ear. "Jackson… what about Brenda?""She's not here. We'll keep this quiet." He kissed down my neck and he slid the dress off of my chest. He unhooked my strapless bra with one hand, stroking the skin of my belly with the other."What about Simon? I don't want to hurt him." Even as I said it, I didn't push him away. What was wrong with me? Maybe my self control would have been better if I hadn't had a few beers. Maybe if I told him I was drunk he would back off. It was worth a try."I'

CHAPTER 38

"What are you talking about?" he asked, sitting up and rubbing his hands over his lean, angular face. "Sophie, think about what you're saying!" I got out of bed and pulled my panties on. "I can't believe this."He put his boxers on shaking his head. "It's all right. We'll just keep it between you and me.""I can't lie about this," I whispered, tears filling my eyes. "I can't do it.""Shh…"I finished getting dressed and headed towards the door. I unlocked it and turned the knob. "I got to tell him.""Dammit Sophie, what the hell is wrong with you!?""Maybe if I tell the truth he will forgive me."He grabbed my wrist and yanked me towards him. "No he won't. Just take a deep breath and get your head on straight."

CHAPTER 39

I woke up in the morning feeling a little hung over, and a lot sore. Not just my jaw, mind you. I whimpered as I stood up to go to the bathroom. Simon opened his eyes and looked up at me."Your jaw looks terrible.""Thank you," I murmured."I didn't mean it like that," he told me. "Where are you going?""Pee. Be right back."I went pee and then called Wyette. He answered on the third ring."Sophie, guess what?! I met a guy at Jackson's party!" he bubbled."No way! Who?""Brent Cooler.""Dude, he's so not gay!" I told him."Dude, he so made out with me!""Was he drunk?""Nope. He's gay, Sophie. Trust me.""Wow. Lear

CHAPTER 40

"Simon… she just got clothes, what's the big deal!? Ah, lay off man, I didn't do it on purpose… I'd never hurt her on purpose! You know that… don't be a dick, kid…" he shook his head, rolling his eyes. "If you can't even trust her enough to let her go out to get breakfast with me than maybe you ought to break up." He snapped and hung up the phone.   "Jackson!" I cried, snatching my cell phone away from him.   "What?" he asked innocently.   "Why would you say that?"
