When Adele returned home, a high fever overtook her, refusing to break.

Elias stumbled in later that night, reeking of alcohol, only to find Adele unconscious, her cheeks flushed an alarming red. Panic washed over him as he rushed to pick her up and drove her straight to the hospital.

When Adele finally regained consciousness, her heavy eyelids fluttered open with great effort.

Seeing her awake, the nurse who had been changing her IV lit up with delight. "Mrs. Sterling, you’re finally awake! You’ve been running a fever for over a day. Mr. Sterling was so worried. He stayed by your bedside the entire time. He only just stepped out to take a call. Should I go tell him you’re awake? He’ll be so happy to hear it."

Adele shook her head weakly, her voice rough and hoarse. "No need."

The nurse didn’t press further.

After carefully adjusting her IV, she left the room respectfully.

The spacious hospital room fell into silence, so quiet that Adele could hear Elias’ voice faintly drifting in from the hallway.

He was always so composed, only losing his cool in front of her.

But now, his voice carried an unfamiliar lightness. There was excitement and even joy.

Moments later, the sound of his footsteps faded into the distance. He had left.

Summoning all her strength, Adele climbed out of bed, her movements slow and unsteady. She followed the direction of his voice, step by step, down several floors.

Just as she reached the corridor, she froze.

Elias was walking out of the obstetrics department, his arm supporting Evelyn.

Both of them were smiling, their joy unmistakable, their lips curving into grins they couldn’t suppress.

The moment Evelyn spotted Adele, her eyes widened with mock surprise, and she exclaimed, "Mrs. Sterling! What a coincidence. Are you here at the hospital too?"

At her words, Elias’ head snapped up. His gaze locked with Adele’s across the corridor, and his entire body stiffened.

Caught off guard, he quickly released Evelyn’s arm, his expression tightening with unease.

"Addie, I—I went downstairs to get your medication and accidentally ran into Evelyn. She’s pregnant, and I was worried something might happen, so I just helped her for a moment," Elias explained hastily, his tone flustered as if terrified she might misunderstand.

Adele’s gaze drifted to Evelyn’s stomach, her breath catching painfully in her chest.

She closed her eyes for a moment, steadying herself, before speaking evenly. "Miss Lowe... when did you find out you were pregnant? And why isn’t the child’s father here?"

Evelyn’s face lit up with delight as she rested a hand on her stomach, her smile sickeningly sweet. "I just found out I’m one month pregnant! The baby’s father couldn’t make it today because he’s busy, but he was over the moon when I told him.

“He’s already bought me a few villas, transferred me two million dollars, and tonight, he’s even planning a citywide fireworks display to celebrate our love and the baby we’re about to have!"

She beamed with pride, practically glowing as she boasted.

However, Adele simply looked at her in silence for a long moment before forcing a faint smile. "Is that so?"

Evelyn’s smile grew smug as she pressed on. "Yes, Mrs. Sterling. Since you’re free today, why don’t we grab dinner together? I can invite the baby’s father to join us."

At her words, Elias’ expression darkened immediately. His gaze snapped to Evelyn, sharp and menacing, instantly silencing her. "That won’t be necessary. Addie doesn’t have time for that."

Turning back to Adele, Elias pulled her gently into his arms, his voice soft and coaxing. "Addie, you’re still not feeling well. Don’t push yourself by wandering around."

"She’s just a spokesperson," he added dismissively, his tone suddenly cold. "Not worth paying attention to."

Evelyn’s face flushed pale, then red, at his words. Her expression twisted between anger and humiliation as tears welled up in her eyes.

Lowering her head like a wounded animal, she bit her lip and murmured, "You’re right. I was out of line. How could I ever think I’d be worthy of sitting at the same table as Mrs. Sterling?"

With that, she wiped at her eyes, turning away in a huff and storming off, her figure trembling with barely contained frustration.

Elias’ expression shifted, and for a moment, he looked as though he might rush after Evelyn. But when his gaze landed on Adele, who stood calmly watching him, he hesitated and ultimately stayed put.

After collecting a pile of prescriptions, Adele was discharged and returned home.

Perhaps still rattled from his outburst at Evelyn earlier, Elias seemed distracted the entire ride back. Once they arrived, he made a vague excuse about work and locked himself away in the study.

As soon as Adele stepped into her bedroom, her phone buzzed with a message from Evelyn.

It was a photo of a prenatal examination report.

What followed was a series of taunting messages:

"Adele, I know you figured it out today. The baby is Elias’. Don’t fool yourself into thinking he loves you that much. If he really did, what does my existence mean?"

"Do you even know how obsessed he is with me? Every year, on your birthday and your wedding anniversary, he puts you to bed and comes to me. He’s insatiable. We go through boxes of condoms every time, and the next day, I can’t even get out of bed."

"We’ve left traces of our love everywhere—his Maybach, his office, even your marital bed. Seventy-two positions, he’s tried them all with me. They say love and intimacy go hand in hand. Has he ever been that passionate with you?"

Reading the messages, Adele took a deep breath, forcing herself to suppress the storm of emotions raging inside her.

She turned off her phone just as Elias wrapped his arms around her from behind.

"What are you looking at, sweetheart?" he murmured, resting his chin on the curve of her neck.

All he saw was the blank, dark screen of her phone.

"It’s nothing," Adele said quietly, her reddened eyes fixed on the view outside the window. The next moment, the night sky burst into a riot of fireworks, dazzling and vibrant. Adele immediately remembered Evelyn’s words from earlier—how Elias had planned a citywide fireworks display to celebrate her pregnancy. Noticing Adele’s gaze lingering on the fireworks, Elias’ eyes softened with affection. "Do you like this? I’ll arrange an even grander display just for you. Better than this one, I promise," he said, holding her tightly and coaxing her with his gentle tone. Adele smiled faintly, but her smile was tinged with bitterness and tears. "Elias," she said softly, her voice carrying a sharp edge, "I don’t like things that others have already used." Whether it was fireworks… or people. Elias froze for a moment, her words piercing through him. Though she was clearly talking about the fireworks, his chest tightened with an inexplicable sense of panic. After a brief silence,

On the first day, when Evelyn sent a photo of Elias peeling shrimp for her, Adele prepared a fire pit and burned every photo she had ever taken with him. On the second day, when Evelyn sent a picture of her kissing Elias under an oak tree, Adele hired workers to uproot every cherry tree Elias had planted in the villa’s backyard. On the third day, Evelyn shared a compilation of Elias’ romantic declarations from her livestream. In response, Adele dug out the hundreds of love letters Elias had written to her over the years. The letters had yellowed slightly with age, but his handwriting remained clear and bold. She ran her fingers over the words one last time, then fed every single letter into the shredder without a hint of hesitation. …On the morning of her planned departure, Adele awoke to find Elias standing by the bed. He was holding her phone, his expression dark and unreadable as his gaze met hers. "Addie," he said quietly, "you just received a message saying somethin

With her temporary identification in hand, Adele boarded a cab to the airport. As the plane lifted off, it felt like everything was finally behind her. After dropping Evelyn off at her home, she clung to him, refusing to let go. "Elias, you’ve already brought me this far. Aren’t you going to come home with me?" she said, tracing suggestive circles in his palm. Elias hesitated, an unexplainable unease bubbling in his chest. "Not tonight. Go on upstairs. I need to get back to Addie," he said, pulling his hand away. He’d promised Adele he’d spend time with her. It had been far too long since they’d had a proper moment together. She’d start throwing a fit if he didn’t keep his word. Thinking of her, a faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, a trace of warmth rising in hi

"Do you… know where Addie went? When did she leave?" Elias asked, his voice hoarse as he licked his dry lips. The staff exchanged uneasy glances before one of them replied, "Sir, Mrs. Sterling left early this morning with her suitcase. We don’t know where she went." Left? Where could she have gone?Elias’ mind was blank, flooded with a wave of panic as he struggled to think. Her parents had long since remarried and built separate families, so there was no chance she’d go to them. Clinging to a shred of hope, he began calling her friends. "Hello? This is Elias Sterling. Is Addie with you?" "What? Are you serious? Why would Addie be here?" Again and again, the same conversation repeated itself. He even called his friends, but no one had any idea where Adele might be. Despair crashed over him in relentless waves. It felt like he was being dragged back to a time when she wasn’t in his life, a time of emptiness and chaos. She was his greatest love, the very center of his b

Maybe Adele had known about the affair all along. The thought hit Elias like a bolt of lightning. He had convinced himself he was careful enough, that he could balance Adele and Evelyn without either world colliding. Evelyn was nothing more than a fleeting distraction, something he would never allow to touch Adele’s world. Or so he thought. But somehow, Adele had found out. When did it all start? How could she be so resolute, so ruthless, as to divorce him and vanish completely from his life? His vision blurred as tears welled in his eyes, slipping past his defenses. And then, a memory surfaced—a moment from years ago, when Adele had agreed to marry him. "I’ll do my best to be a good wife," she’d said, her voice steady and sincere. "But I’ll never tolerate being lied to. If you ever deceive me, I’ll disappear from your life forever." Back then, Elias had been so confident, so certain he would never betray her. He loved her too much and wanted her too deeply. He’d felt as if

Elias instinctively wanted to tear the divorce papers in his hands, but then a sobering realization struck him—this might be the last thing she had left him. If he destroyed it, he’d lose even this final, fragile connection to her. His fingers traced over Adele’s signature again and again, his eyes filled with aching longing. "Addie, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have been with another woman. I only love you!" "You can hit me, yell at me, anything you want… Just please, don’t leave me." "I can’t live without you, Addie…" He repeated his apologies over and over until his voice was raw, cracked with desperation. But the person who needed to hear them wasn’t there. It was all in vain. "Adele, I haven’t signed these papers. That means we’re not divorced. We’re still husband and wife, and I will find you!" Elias’ eyes burned with determination as he spoke, his jaw set with resolve. He would never let her go. She was his, always had been, and he’d admit his faults, but h

A photo of a disheveled bed flashed onto Elias' screen, and his fury ignited instantly, his gaze cutting through the image like a blade.“So…it’s you!” His voice was icy, laced with a pressure so overwhelming it was suffocating. With an air of defiance, she dialed a number.“Adele, when did you learn to mimic Elias’ tone? You almost sounded like him. Anyway, if I were you, I’d have handed over the position as Elias’ wife by now. After all, I’m already carrying Elias’ child. Who knows? "Addie!" Elias jolted awake, calling out Adele’s name. Elliot sat by the bedside, his expression dark and severe. "Elias Sterling, from this moment on, you’re to focus on work and getting your health back. You are not to look for Adele again!" Elias coughed harshly, confusion and defiance evident in his hoarse voice. "Why? She’s my wife. I haven’t signed the divorce papers, so we’re still married. Elliot barked, cutting him off. Without another word, he pulled out his phone and played a recording of his recent call with Adele. Her calm, resolute voice filled the room, shattering every ounce of Elias’ confidence. When the recording ended, the room fell into an oppressive silence. He chased after her with everything he had, but all he caught was empty air. Even the two engagement rings in his hand had disappeared. Addie didn’t want him anymore. She didn’t want his love or anything else he could offer. "Addie... Addie..." Elias murmured her name over and over, his eyes tightly shut. Elias' nervousness grew more palpable, and a faint sheen of cold sweat dampened his palms. He stood there waiting, but no one came to the door. Panic stirred in his chest, and without thinking, he reached out to push the door. To his dismay, it was firmly locked, refusing to budge. Nearby, a small blackboard caught his attention. On it were the words: "Closed today."At first, he had assumed the sign meant Adele was expecting him—that she had marked the inn as closed to other guests, leaving it just for their reunion. But now, the meaning was painfully clear: she had no intention of seeing him. At that moment, it dawned on him. Adele had played him. She had never planned to meet with him. This was her way of rejecting him. Every detail screamed at him, loud and unforgiving. “Sorry, I’m not going to forgive you.”Elias stared at the inn in disbelief. His mind reeled back to the past, to the moments they had dreamed of together. Back then, they had talked about opening a seasid

At first, the public merely mocked the situation. Some, envious of the reward, deliberately provided useless information and false evidence. However, as time went on, valid leads began to surface. Once people realized they could actually claim the prize, many online users started to frantically pitch in. Even Adele heard about the news. Countless people were determined to track her down, yet she felt no gratitude toward them. Instead, she found it slightly aggravating. She had already erased her identity—wasn’t that enough to show her resolve? Adele knew herself well. She wasn’t the kind of person who would go back to what she had left behind. From beginning to end, she had never planned to forgive him. Looking at Elias’ words of apology, she found them utterly ridiculous. If he knew he was in the wrong, why had he pretended nothing had ever happened before?
