I never understood how such a big, muscular guy could be so fragile. Later, I found out it was all an act.

When no one else was around, he'd taunt me, even brazenly admitting he was faking his illness.

The rare blood type was real, but he wasn't nearly as weak as he pretended to be. Yet somehow he always convinced Adeline he was helpless and frail.

Once when I joked to Adeline that Bryan was so fragile a breeze could knock him over, she exploded at me. She accused me of cursing him and said I had a twisted mind.

It was ridiculous. To Adeline, Bryan was just this fragile and delicate guy from a fallen family that everyone could bully.

She was blind to who he really was behind her back.

The more I tried to tell her, the less she believed me. She even sympathized with his family's decline and told me to be more generous and let go of the past.

She even had the nerve to say I should be grateful - if it wasn't for Bryan, I'd never have had a chance with the Shaw family.
