Chapter 3

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"

Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"

Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."

She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.

Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed the subject, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, at least James was generous - houses, cars, and eighty million..."

She glanced at Sarah and sighed. "Though I suppose you don't need any of it."

After Sarah's father died, she'd handed the company management to her cousin Melvin Sanders, content to live off the dividends. Everyone assumed the company belonged to Melvin now, and with the prenup between Sarah and James, her family thought she had nothing left.

"You can never have too much money," Sarah replied absently.

Looking at her friend’s plain and boring appearance, Scarlett felt a pang of sympathy. "That's right! Buy yourself some nice clothes and bags, show the Chancers what they're missing! But what are you planning to do now?"

Sarah's gaze grew distant. She had double-majored in psychology and music in college but had to take a break when her father passed away, then came three years as a housewife… She had never thought about what would come next.

Scarlett squeezed her hand. "No rush. Take your time figuring it out. For now, let's go shopping, and in a few days, I'll take you hunting up the mountains.” She winked excitedly. "And guess what? Zachary Reynolds will be there too."

Sarah raised an eyebrow in surprise. Zachary Reynolds, the mysterious third son of the real estate empire, wasn't known for joining such events. But her curiosity quickly faded.

After lunch, Sarah wasn't in the mood for shopping. She just handed over her card and had the staff deliver everything Scarlett picked to her apartment.

Before leaving, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. "Oh, Sasa - I know you've been busy, but Professor Wells hasn't been well lately. You should visit him when you can."

Professor Wells had been Sarah's psychology mentor in college. She made a mental note to visit him as she headed back to her apartment.

After leaving the Chancers, Sarah had moved into a small apartment near Scarlett's place. It was regularly maintained, making it perfect for temporary accommodation.

But as she approached the building, she spotted James leaning against his car, waiting. A woman sat in the passenger seat - delicate features, gentle eyes, the perfect picture of feminine grace.

Sarah glanced at her sideways. She could see why James would fall for someone like that.

The woman stepped out of the car and walked over with James, her arm linked through his. With a warm, gracious smile, she extended her hand, "Hello Sarah, I'm Charlotte Garnett."

Mia fumbled in her pocket, grabbed her phone, and lit up with excitement. “Zach, I’m not having dinner at home tonight.”Zachary sighed and shook his head. “Right. Get a boyfriend and suddenly your brother doesn’t exist.”After leaving the Reynolds house, Sarah had barely stepped into her car when her phone rang. It was Lucy.Lucy wanted to meet. They agreed on a time, and Sarah drove off immediately.Sarah stepped out of her car when she arrived and glanced at the luxury sedan parked beside her. A woman leaned against the door, wearing a wide-brimmed hat that cast a shadow over her face.“Why did you suddenly want to see me today?” Sarah asked.Lucy pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and let smoke curl around them.“I have something to say.”Sarah frowned and covered her nose. “Since when did you start smoking?”Lucy gave a mocking laugh. “I learned in the psychiatric ward.”“They allowed cigarettes in there?”Lucy wasn’t the type to be left unattended. There shouldn’t have be

Even though Sarah wanted to avoid spending time with Zachary, she could never bring herself to refuse Mia.“Great! I’ll go change right now.”Mia bounced up the stairs, full of energy.Upstairs, in the study, Zachary was working through company documents. The moment he saw Sarah walk in, he put everything aside.Sarah set a cup of coffee on his desk. “I saw the housekeeper bringing this up earlier, so I carried it over.”“Thank you.”Zachary lifted the cup and took in the rich scent before taking a sip. Surprise flickered across his face.“Did you finish the evaluation? How is she? Is Mia really doing okay?”Sarah sat on the small couch in front of his desk and nodded. “She’s doing very well. You don’t need to worry. She’s happy now, but it isn’t because of either of us.”Zachary let out a quiet laugh. “I know. Lucas right?”Sarah’s reluctant smile gave everything away. Zachary caught it instantly.“Mia must have talked a lot of trash about me, didn’t she? I’m guessing she ma

Zachary left the living room to give them privacy and headed to the study. The moment he disappeared, Mia flung herself at Sarah without restraint. “That annoying brother of mine finally left. I can hug you now. I’ve missed you so much these past few days.”One look at Mia’s bright, cheerful expression told Sarah everything she needed to know. The shadows in Mia’s heart had faded for now.She had heard from Scarlette about how capable Mia had been at the banquet that night. Confident, quick-thinking, even fearless.“Have you had any nightmares lately?” Sarah asked gently.Mia shook her head. “Not for a long time. The last time I had one was when you got into that car accident. I was so scared that I dreamed about it that night.”Sarah stroked her head, but before she could begin the evaluation, a sharp ringtone cut through the quiet.Mia perked up and grabbed her phone. The moment she saw the caller ID, she broke into a huge smile. “Hello?”Sarah stayed on the couch, watching w

Zachary dropped by again, this time saying he actually had something serious to discuss.Sarah sat curled up on the couch with a pillow in her arms, looking relaxed and half-asleep. She let out a soft yawn, her voice lazy and warm. “Alright, tell me. What do you need?”The moment he saw her like that, Zachary’s throat tightened. His voice grew a little rough. “It’s nothing urgent. I just wanted to ask if you could check on Mia. I wasn’t sure if you were free.”“Mia? Did something happen to her?”Sarah’s drowsiness vanished instantly. Concern flashed across her face.Zachary noticed the way her mood changed and unconsciously curled his fingers. A strange stab of jealousy hit him.She cared too much. Even if it was his own sister, she still couldn’t compete with his wife in his mind.Meanwhile, Mia was at home watching her drama when she suddenly let out a sneeze. A chill ran down her back. She sniffled, pulled a tissue, and muttered, “Am I catching a cold?”Sarah saw Zachary low

But Mandy only sat on the cold wooden bench, her expression distant. She had no interest in anything Julian had to say.At that same moment, chaos was erupting inside the Chancer household.Mrs. Chancer and Lucy sat stiffly on the living-room sofa. Charlotte stood at the top of the stairs, staring down at them.“I will not divorce James,” Charlotte said firmly.Lucy let out a sharp laugh. “And what right do you think you have to say that? The fact that we didn’t go after you for what happened last time was already more mercy than you deserved. But you no longer have the qualifications to stay in this family.”Charlotte turned to Mrs. Chancer. No matter what had happened in the past, Mrs. Chancer had always taken her side. She expected the same now.But Mrs. Chancer wasn’t standing with her this time. She sat beside Lucy with a look of cold disdain. “Charlotte, while things are still civil, you’d better show some sense. If this gets out, how are you going to face anyone? And I dou

Mandy’s face was covered in bruises. The cracks on her lips had dried and split, making her look painfully fragile.Even so, she didn’t flinch. She simply stared at the thin beam of sunlight seeping through the corner of the wall.Someone delivered food every day, but never three meals. Only one. They would drop it off at noon. The dishes were always spoiled, but she still forced herself to eat every bite. She no longer dared to imagine living comfortably. She didn’t dare think about the naive dream she once held onto. Her only thought now was to stay alive long enough to leave this place and see her mother again.A cluster of footsteps sounded overhead. Mandy knew the meal delivery was coming. She braced herself and slowly leaned toward the slot where food was usually passed through. But when she looked up, the person standing there wasn’t the usual guard. It was Julian.“You should really give in,” Julian said quietly. “Otherwise Leon will drag out every member of your family
