Chapter 3

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"

Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"

Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."

She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.

Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed the subject, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, at least James was generous - houses, cars, and eighty million..."

She glanced at Sarah and sighed. "Though I suppose you don't need any of it."

After Sarah's father died, she'd handed the company management to her cousin Melvin Sanders, content to live off the dividends. Everyone assumed the company belonged to Melvin now, and with the prenup between Sarah and James, her family thought she had nothing left.

"You can never have too much money," Sarah replied absently.

Looking at her friend’s plain and boring appearance, Scarlett felt a pang of sympathy. "That's right! Buy yourself some nice clothes and bags, show the Chancers what they're missing! But what are you planning to do now?"

Sarah's gaze grew distant. She had double-majored in psychology and music in college but had to take a break when her father passed away, then came three years as a housewife… She had never thought about what would come next.

Scarlett squeezed her hand. "No rush. Take your time figuring it out. For now, let's go shopping, and in a few days, I'll take you hunting up the mountains.” She winked excitedly. "And guess what? Zachary Reynolds will be there too."

Sarah raised an eyebrow in surprise. Zachary Reynolds, the mysterious third son of the real estate empire, wasn't known for joining such events. But her curiosity quickly faded.

After lunch, Sarah wasn't in the mood for shopping. She just handed over her card and had the staff deliver everything Scarlett picked to her apartment.

Before leaving, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. "Oh, Sasa - I know you've been busy, but Professor Wells hasn't been well lately. You should visit him when you can."

Professor Wells had been Sarah's psychology mentor in college. She made a mental note to visit him as she headed back to her apartment.

After leaving the Chancers, Sarah had moved into a small apartment near Scarlett's place. It was regularly maintained, making it perfect for temporary accommodation.

But as she approached the building, she spotted James leaning against his car, waiting. A woman sat in the passenger seat - delicate features, gentle eyes, the perfect picture of feminine grace.

Sarah glanced at her sideways. She could see why James would fall for someone like that.

The woman stepped out of the car and walked over with James, her arm linked through his. With a warm, gracious smile, she extended her hand, "Hello Sarah, I'm Charlotte Garnett."

But was everything truly her fault? If James had cared about her even a little, she would never have reached this point. Her thoughts spiraled into chaos. Despair swallowed her whole. She no longer had the strength to argue. Instead, she stumbled toward her father and dropped to her knees, begging, “Dad, please. I’m begging you. Think of something. I can’t divorce James. I can’t.”Mr. Garnett looked down at her with bitter disappointment. “I warned you. I told you to know your limits. But you kept pushing his bottom line again and again. Now look where we are. Forget helping this family. At this point I’m praying you don’t drag us down any further.”Charlotte sobbed uncontrollably, clutching at his pant leg. “Dad, I know I messed up. I regret every

Mr. Garnett pretended to stay calm. He poured himself a cup of tea, took a shallow sip, and said quietly, “Get the divorce.”The chair screeched loudly against the floor, the sound sharp enough to make anyone’s ears ache.Charlotte shot to her feet, eyes blazing red, her whole body jolting as if she had been struck. “Dad, are you out of your mind? How does me divorcing James help you in any way?”Mrs. Garnett heard the shouting and hurried downstairs. When she saw the two of them facing off in the living room, she rushed between them, panicked. “What is going on with you two?”Tears streamed down Charlotte’s cheeks. She pointed at her father with trembling fingers, her voice full of heartbreak. “Ask him. He wants me to divorce James.”Mrs. Garnett’s eyes widened in shock. She turned to her husband. “What are you saying? Charlotte and James already have a child. How can you tell them to divorce?”Charlotte let out a hollow laugh, remembering the vague comment he made at dinner. “S

Mr. Garnett froze. Then he shoved the papers away. “No. Absolutely not. You cannot get divorced!”James watched his reaction silently. Lucy picked up the document. “So which one matters more to you, Mr. Garnett? The Garnett Corporation or your daughter’s marriage? Choose.”Mr. Garnett’s hand trembled as he lifted his teacup and took a small sip, trying to calm himself.Lucy tossed the documents onto the floor. “Alright. We see where you stand. But let me remind you… even if you refuse the divorce agreement, my brother and Charlotte are ending this. We already hired the lawyers.”A fierce struggle flashed through Mr. Garnett’s eyes. After a long moment, he finally bent down, picked up the divorce agreement, and whispered, “I choose this. Help the Garnett Corporation.”Lucy and James exchanged a look. One more obstacle cleared.Half an hour later, Mr. Garnett returned home. The dining table was set. Mrs. Garnett and Charlotte sat waiting with warm smiles.“Dad, you’re home?”He

Mr. Garnett froze. He stared at her in disbelief. “What did you just say?”Lucy didn’t bother giving him face. She kept her expression cold. “Your family is like sticky bandages. No matter how hard we try to shake you off, you cling right back. At your age, you’d think you’d have more dignity, not less.”Mr. Garnett’s face flushed a deep red. His neck stiffened with rage. Words stuck in his throat. Finally, he lunged forward and raised his hand, aiming straight for her face.Lucy had grown up spoiled and fearless. She had never imagined someone would dare hit her on her own turf. All she managed was a startled scream before squeezing her eyes shut. But the pain never came.Instead, a stern voice cut through the air beside her ear. “Mr. Garnett, lifting your hand against a young woman seems beneath your status, doesn’t it?”Mr. Garnett froze. When he saw who had spoken, his expression collapsed. The raised hand dropped immediately.Lucy darted behind James, eyes shining with tear

“The arm. Or an organ,” the casino owner said darkly.Gary shuddered so hard his teeth almost clicked.Steven nodded. “Alright. I need him to do something for me. If he succeeds, I will pay off his debt. If he fails, they can take his arm.”The owner nodded immediately, sweat dripping down his forehead. At Steven’s signal, the owner hurried back through the casino doors.Steven turned to Gary again. “So. Can you do what I need you to do?”Gary nodded rapidly, like a bobblehead. “Yes. Of course. Anything.”Steven gave him a crooked smile. “Good. Come with me.”A black luxury car pulled up. Without waiting for instructions, Gary scrambled inside like a frightened dog.At the Chancer Corporation, the receptionist stared at Mr. Garnett with a mix of pity and contempt. Her tone was polite, but her eyes were sharp. “Even if you are the CEO’s father-in-law, you still need an appointment. Please do not make things difficult for me. If Mr. Chancer gets angry, I will be the one sufferin

The result was one-two-one. As small as it could get.The man froze. His face went blank. He looked down at his hands. Not a single chip left. Everything was gone. The dealer noticed and gestured to the men standing nearby. The bodyguards understood immediately. They grabbed the gambler by both arms and dragged him out of the casino. They threw him onto the cold ground outside.“Gary,” one of them spat, “if you’re broke, stop coming here. You came flashing that check like you were some big shot.”The man on the ground winced in pain. He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a business card. Sarah Sanders’s name was printed across the top. Before he could dial her number, a hand reached in and snatched his phone.“What are you doing? Give that back!”“So you’re Gary?” The newcomer’s voice was lazy, almost mocking, his eyes filled with disgust.Gary swung at him, but the man dodged easily.Fear crawled up Gary’s spine. “Who… who are you?”The man gave a short laugh. “The one wh
