Chapter 3

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"

Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"

Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."

She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.

Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed the subject, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, at least James was generous - houses, cars, and eighty million..."

She glanced at Sarah and sighed. "Though I suppose you don't need any of it."

After Sarah's father died, she'd handed the company management to her cousin Melvin Sanders, content to live off the dividends. Everyone assumed the company belonged to Melvin now, and with the prenup between Sarah and James, her family thought she had nothing left.

"You can never have too much money," Sarah replied absently.

Looking at her friend’s plain and boring appearance, Scarlett felt a pang of sympathy. "That's right! Buy yourself some nice clothes and bags, show the Chancers what they're missing! But what are you planning to do now?"

Sarah's gaze grew distant. She had double-majored in psychology and music in college but had to take a break when her father passed away, then came three years as a housewife… She had never thought about what would come next.

Scarlett squeezed her hand. "No rush. Take your time figuring it out. For now, let's go shopping, and in a few days, I'll take you hunting up the mountains.” She winked excitedly. "And guess what? Zachary Reynolds will be there too."

Sarah raised an eyebrow in surprise. Zachary Reynolds, the mysterious third son of the real estate empire, wasn't known for joining such events. But her curiosity quickly faded.

After lunch, Sarah wasn't in the mood for shopping. She just handed over her card and had the staff deliver everything Scarlett picked to her apartment.

Before leaving, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. "Oh, Sasa - I know you've been busy, but Professor Wells hasn't been well lately. You should visit him when you can."

Professor Wells had been Sarah's psychology mentor in college. She made a mental note to visit him as she headed back to her apartment.

After leaving the Chancers, Sarah had moved into a small apartment near Scarlett's place. It was regularly maintained, making it perfect for temporary accommodation.

But as she approached the building, she spotted James leaning against his car, waiting. A woman sat in the passenger seat - delicate features, gentle eyes, the perfect picture of feminine grace.

Sarah glanced at her sideways. She could see why James would fall for someone like that.

The woman stepped out of the car and walked over with James, her arm linked through his. With a warm, gracious smile, she extended her hand, "Hello Sarah, I'm Charlotte Garnett."

“Fine, it’s a deal. That’s all I’m asking for. I have no other demands, I just want Dr. Seth to examine my grandfather.”“I seem to recall you using this excuse once before,” Zachary said coldly. “You’re not planning to keep luring me in with the same trick, are you?” The last time Vivian had used her grandfather as bait, it had led to Sarah being drugged by Leon.“Zachary! I’ve already paid enough for my mistakes. The Wilson family is on the brink of collapse. My grandfather is lying in a hospital bed, barely alive. Even you…” Her voice cracked, her eyes reddening. “You’ve come to despise me completely. But set all of that aside. Aren’t you even a little curious about what my grandfather told yours? It’s a secret that could shake everything.”Her face was pale and feverish, her expression almost deranged. Zachary narrowed his eyes, voice dropping to a quiet, cutting edge. “If you’re trying to barter with me, my answer is no. Don’t forget, you still owe me. Every last thing you’ve d

“So that’s what it was…”Hearing the nurses chattering in the hallway, Vivian finally learned the news: the world-renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Seth, was coming to East Coast.Ever since her grandfather fell into a coma, she had been in constant communication with the hospital. Their current medical resources could only maintain his vital signs. No one knew when or if he would ever wake up.To truly figure out what had happened to her grandfather, someone like Dr. Seth would have to examine him. She had long wanted to bring him in, but without the right connections and with the Wens in decline, it was impossible. She glanced at her grandfather, hooked up to tubes and machines, then stood up and headed straight for the Reynolds Group.---“She wants to see me?” Zachary frowned.Steven gave a slight nod. “Front desk said she’s in the lounge. She won’t say what it’s about. Just that it’s important and she wants to talk to you personally.”Zachary let out a cold laugh. “I can guess wh

"Yes, sir. I’ll keep a low profile."Midnight.Sarah lay on the bed, tossing and turning. Lately, Leon had been acting stranger than ever. She could barely overhear anything now. Even Julian had started deliberately avoiding her.But she had another reason for staying here, she wanted to gather information about Leon.Clearly, they were becoming more cautious. Just then, she heard a faint sound by the window. Her body tensed as she stared at it.The moonlight cast a shadow across the glass. A figure stood outside. That’s when it hit her, this was Leon’s territory. Anyone sneaking around like this couldn’t be one of his people. Could it be someone Melvin had sent? She rushed to the window and pulled the curtain aside. Her breath caught. It was Zachary. Her heart skipped a beat. She cracked the window open and whispered, “What are you doing here?”“You’re really going to make me talk to you like this? I can barely hold on,” Zachary whispered back. He was clinging to the edge

After Quincy left, the tension in Sarah’s eyes finally eased. She had hidden it well enough that Leon assumed it was just the pain from the bandage changes.“I’m sorry. If it leaves a scar, I’ll take you to back to Country H for scar treatment,” Leon said, glancing at the bloody gauze in the trash can. It had to hurt.Sarah’s hands were fully wrapped, her feet bandaged too. She couldn’t walk and could only lie in bed.She didn’t respond to Leon’s offer. Instead, she shifted the subject lightly. “Have someone else come next time.”“What’s wrong with this doctor? You didn’t like her?” Leon frowned slightly.“She was rough. Her attitude was bad, and it hurt. Just get someone else,” Sarah said calmly.Leon chuckled. “Fine, she won’t come again.”It was the first time Sarah had ever asked him for something, especially something so small. Of course he wouldn’t say no.Right after he spoke, dinner was brought in. The table by the floor-to-ceiling window was set with rose petals, candl

Julian opened the car door. A woman wearing a mask and carrying a medical kit stepped out. She was a doctor. She paused briefly outside the villa, glancing around the surroundings before following Julian inside. When the woman entered Sarah’s room, she began changing her bandages. Leon had just been called away by Julian, likely for something urgent. The doctor gently removed the gauze from Sarah’s hands and feet. The bandages were stained with blood. She took out a bottle of antibiotics from her kit, crushed the pills on the spot, and sprinkled the powder directly onto Sarah’s wounds.Just as Sarah was lost in thought, she heard the doctor speak in a low voice.“Sarah, I’m here to help you.”Sarah froze and stared at her. The woman quickly pulled down her mask. The face was unfamiliar. No matter how hard Sarah tried, she couldn’t remember ever seeing her before.“Who are you? Who sent you?” she asked cautiously. The doctor didn’t stop working. Her voice remained quiet. “You do

Melvin pulled into the villa district and stopped in front of Quincy’s house.“Miss Sachs, I appreciate your kindness. Thank you,” he said quietly. On the drive back, a wave of dread and bitterness settled in his chest. It hurt more than he expected.Even someone like Quincy, practically a stranger, was willing to step forward and help. But his own mother, Mrs. Sanders, after everything she had done to Sarah, still refused to say where she was. Throughout their conversation, she hadn't mentioned Sarah at all.At the airport, inside the VIP lounge, Scarlett sat with tears in her eyes, staring at Steven. For nearly three hours, he had laid everything out. Starting from the moment Sarah was taken, all the way to the details of what she had suffered.Just as he expected, Scarlett’s anger built with each word. By the time he finished, it was already late. She never imagined things would fall apart so quickly after she left.“So she hid everything from me just so I could focus on ge
