Chapter 3

Penulis: Summer Knowles
Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"

Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"

Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."

She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.

Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed the subject, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, at least James was generous - houses, cars, and eighty million..."

She glanced at Sarah and sighed. "Though I suppose you don't need any of it."

After Sarah's father died, she'd handed the company management to her cousin Melvin Sanders, content to live off the dividends. Everyone assumed the company belonged to Melvin now, and with the prenup between Sarah and James, her family thought she had nothing left.

"You can never have too much money," Sarah replied absently.

Looking at her friend’s plain and boring appearance, Scarlett felt a pang of sympathy. "That's right! Buy yourself some nice clothes and bags, show the Chancers what they're missing! But what are you planning to do now?"

Sarah's gaze grew distant. She had double-majored in psychology and music in college but had to take a break when her father passed away, then came three years as a housewife… She had never thought about what would come next.

Scarlett squeezed her hand. "No rush. Take your time figuring it out. For now, let's go shopping, and in a few days, I'll take you hunting up the mountains.” She winked excitedly. "And guess what? Zachary Reynolds will be there too."

Sarah raised an eyebrow in surprise. Zachary Reynolds, the mysterious third son of the real estate empire, wasn't known for joining such events. But her curiosity quickly faded.

After lunch, Sarah wasn't in the mood for shopping. She just handed over her card and had the staff deliver everything Scarlett picked to her apartment.

Before leaving, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. "Oh, Sasa - I know you've been busy, but Professor Wells hasn't been well lately. You should visit him when you can."

Professor Wells had been Sarah's psychology mentor in college. She made a mental note to visit him as she headed back to her apartment.

After leaving the Chancers, Sarah had moved into a small apartment near Scarlett's place. It was regularly maintained, making it perfect for temporary accommodation.

But as she approached the building, she spotted James leaning against his car, waiting. A woman sat in the passenger seat - delicate features, gentle eyes, the perfect picture of feminine grace.

Sarah glanced at her sideways. She could see why James would fall for someone like that.

The woman stepped out of the car and walked over with James, her arm linked through his. With a warm, gracious smile, she extended her hand, "Hello Sarah, I'm Charlotte Garnett."

Her tone was polite, but her eyes were sharp. “Even if you are the CEO’s father-in-law, you still need an appointment. Please do not make things difficult for me. If Mr. Chancer gets angry, I will be the one sufferin

The result was one-two-one. As small as it could get.The man froze. His face went blank. He looked down at his hands. Not a single chip left. Everything was gone. The dealer noticed and gestured to the men standing nearby. The bodyguards understood immediately. They grabbed the gambler by both arms and dragged him out of the casino. They threw him onto the cold ground outside.“Gary,” one of them spat, “if you’re broke, stop coming here. You came flashing that check like you were some big shot.”The man on the ground winced in pain. He fumbled in his pocket and pulled out a business card. Sarah Sanders’s name was printed across the top. Before he could dial her number, a hand reached in and snatched his phone.“What are you doing? Give that back!”“So you’re Gary?” The newcomer’s voice was lazy, almost mocking, his eyes filled with disgust.Gary swung at him, but the man dodged easily.Fear crawled up Gary’s spine. “Who… who are you?”The man gave a short laugh. “The one wh

The side-room door opened and a little boy slipped out. He walked to Mrs. Mendes and quietly placed something in her hand. She looked surprised and opened her palm. It was a hair clip. Before Sarah could react, Mrs. Mendes burst into tears. “Tina…”She had forced herself for so long not to think of her daughter, calling her a burden just to numb the pain. But Tina had used her very first part-time paycheck to buy that hair clip for Mother’s Day.“Mrs. Mendes, Vivian wasn’t responsible for just your daughter’s death,” Sarah said coldly. “There were others. Once the families file jointly after we submit the application, the combined charges will bury her. She will probably spend the rest of her life in prison.”Mrs. Mendes wiped her face. “Can I think about it?”Sarah nodded. She understood. At East Coast’s Neuro-Rehabilitation Center, a caregiver pushed a cart down the hallway, delivering the day’s medications. When they got home, Melvin asked if Sarah wanted to take a trip somewhere. She turned him down. There was no time for a vacation. Not with that case hanging over her head.Meanwhile, the suffocating seaside villa showed no hint of the New Year. There was no warmth, no celebration. Only silence.Mandy was barely surviving inside the massive villa. Surveillance cameras covered every corner, and bodyguards were stationed everywhere.Leon and Julian had already returned to Country H. Under his father’s pressure, he had no choice but to put East Coast aside for the time being. Before leaving, he warned Mandy that if she dared to run, he would drag her back and let her starve to death in the basement.Mandy only scoffed. It wasn’t about whether she dared to run. Even if she did, where could she possibly go?Her television privileges had not been cut off, so she watched the recent news in East Coast. What delighted her most was that Vivian had been taken into police custody. Multiple c

Zachary’s voice came through the phone with a faint congestion. “Sarah… happy New Year.”“Did you even hear what I said? Go home. Now.” Sarah forced herself to stay calm.Snow had begun to drift from the sky, falling in soft, swirling sheets. With his black coat, Zachary’s shoulders and hair were quickly covered in white. His heavy breathing made Sarah uneasy. “What on earth are you thinking?”Zachary answered quietly, “I figured you wouldn’t be happy here tonight. And… I prepared a New Year’s gift for you. I was hoping I could give it to you in person.”There was a short silence, followed by a loud sneeze. Sarah looked down just in time to see Zachary’s body jolt with the force of it. She almost laughed. The snow was falling harder. Sarah urged, “Give it to me tomorrow. It’s snowing like crazy. If you don’t leave now, they’ll dig you out of a snowbank. I don’t want to see you on the morning news.”But Zachary insisted. “Then come downstairs and get it.”Sarah hesitated, then s

Of course, she did not mention the real priority. Handling invitations was one thing. The bigger part of her time was spent searching for the truth.Compared to the noisy warmth of the Sanders household, the Reynolds home felt empty.William Reynolds had opened his eyes, but he still could not leave the hospital. Zachary and Mia looked around the large house. The nanny had tried her best to make it feel festive, but the silence still crept in.When Mia saw Zachary step out of the study, she instantly threw herself into his arms. “Zach, can we go spend New Year’s with Sarah? I haven’t seen her in days.”Zachary thought about it for a moment, then shook his head. “They are probably at the old estate. It wouldn’t be appropriate.”Mia puffed out her cheeks. “Then let’s spend it here together.”Suddenly, her eyes lit up as if she had remembered something. “Brother, let’s bring food to Grandpa’s hospital room and celebrate New Year’s Eve with him.”Zachary reached out and rubbed her h
