Chapter 3

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"

Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"

Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."

She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.

Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed the subject, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, at least James was generous - houses, cars, and eighty million..."

She glanced at Sarah and sighed. "Though I suppose you don't need any of it."

After Sarah's father died, she'd handed the company management to her cousin Melvin Sanders, content to live off the dividends. Everyone assumed the company belonged to Melvin now, and with the prenup between Sarah and James, her family thought she had nothing left.

"You can never have too much money," Sarah replied absently.

Looking at her friend’s plain and boring appearance, Scarlett felt a pang of sympathy. "That's right! Buy yourself some nice clothes and bags, show the Chancers what they're missing! But what are you planning to do now?"

Sarah's gaze grew distant. She had double-majored in psychology and music in college but had to take a break when her father passed away, then came three years as a housewife… She had never thought about what would come next.

Scarlett squeezed her hand. "No rush. Take your time figuring it out. For now, let's go shopping, and in a few days, I'll take you hunting up the mountains.” She winked excitedly. "And guess what? Zachary Reynolds will be there too."

Sarah raised an eyebrow in surprise. Zachary Reynolds, the mysterious third son of the real estate empire, wasn't known for joining such events. But her curiosity quickly faded.

After lunch, Sarah wasn't in the mood for shopping. She just handed over her card and had the staff deliver everything Scarlett picked to her apartment.

Before leaving, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. "Oh, Sasa - I know you've been busy, but Professor Wells hasn't been well lately. You should visit him when you can."

Professor Wells had been Sarah's psychology mentor in college. She made a mental note to visit him as she headed back to her apartment.

After leaving the Chancers, Sarah had moved into a small apartment near Scarlett's place. It was regularly maintained, making it perfect for temporary accommodation.

But as she approached the building, she spotted James leaning against his car, waiting. A woman sat in the passenger seat - delicate features, gentle eyes, the perfect picture of feminine grace.

Sarah glanced at her sideways. She could see why James would fall for someone like that.

The woman stepped out of the car and walked over with James, her arm linked through his. With a warm, gracious smile, she extended her hand, "Hello Sarah, I'm Charlotte Garnett."

But even with blood trickling from the fresh cut, Vivian didn’t flinch. She actually smiled.“You won’t do it, will you? That’s your problem, Sarah—you’re too soft. That’s why you’ll never beat me.”Sarah scoffed. “You think I’m scared to kill you? Please. I just think death would be letting you off too easy. You’ve ruined so many lives—you don’t deserve a clean way out. I want the law, the same one you mock, to make you pay.”Vivian gave a mocking laugh. “The law? Oh, that reminds me. That night at the bar? I recorded everything. What if I accidentally leaked that footage, huh? That’d be a real mess.”“You recorded it?” Sarah’s voice shook with fury as she dropped the broken shard. Her whole face was flushed. “How could you?!”“I like having leverage,” Vivian said casually. “So maybe next time, don’t come at me with a sharp object. You never know—I might get in a bad mood and drop a few videos online just for fun.”Sarah’s pupils contracted. Her breath hitched. “You’re vile.”V

She glanced at the closed door and let out a soft laugh.“You really think you can win her over?”“That’s none of your business,” Leon said, eyes filled with distrust.“I should go,” Vivian said lightly.Leon nodded. “By the way—she asked me to pass along a message.”“Oh?” Vivian tilted her head, intrigued. “What message?”Leon gave a slow, amused smile.“She said… you’re going to regret this.”Vivian’s eyes lit up with interest. She strolled to the tightly shut door and raised her voice deliberately.“Think you can let me talk to her?”“No,” Leon replied flatly.“Oh, come on. I’m not gonna hurt her,” Vivian said with a playful tone. “We’re both in this mess together, aren’t we? Maybe I can even help you out.”Leon looked at her coolly and shook his head.“She won’t want to see you.”“You don’t know that,” Vivian said, her voice picking up with excitement. “Why not try?”The living room fell silent for a moment. Just then, a voice came from behind the door—calm, clear, an

Leon’s smile faded. He straightened up and said, “This is my place. There are people watching both inside and out. If you need anything, just tell the guard outside—they’ll bring it in.”He paused, then added, “I’ll have some books sent in so you don’t get bored. You can watch TV, but forget about contacting the outside world. I've got people intercepting all communication. Until I take you back to my country, this is your life now.”Sarah frowned. “You’re taking me to your country?”“Yeah. You know how much reach Zachary has in East Coast. The only way to keep you safe is to keep you hidden. If you really want to stay away from him, working with me is your best shot.”She didn’t respond, but her silence said enough—she wasn’t going. She wasn’t even entertaining the idea.“I’m not going,” she said flatly.Leon’s voice turned cold. “That’s not your choice to make.”He’d already planned it all out. Once things in East Coast were wrapped up and the Reynold family collapsed, he’d ha

Sarah narrowed her eyes when she said “you all,” and Leon chuckled under his breath.“Who else do you think, besides me?”“You’re really asking that?” She gave him a sharp look. “You and Vivian—obviously. I just want to know if there’s anyone else involved.”Leon’s smile turned sly. “What if I said yes?”He toyed with the hem of his shirt, lashes flickering, but Sarah didn’t hesitate.“It’s the Chancers, isn’t it?”Leon raised an eyebrow. “What makes you say that?”“Come on. In this whole city, who else wants me dead? It’s either you, Vivian, or one of them. And look at me now—do I really seem like someone you need to keep secrets from? I’m already drained. I’m not here to fight. I just want to sit with my thoughts and be left alone.”But the calmer she sounded, the more Leon wanted to push her—just to see if he could still get a rise out of her.“What thoughts?”“Like… the car crash three years ago. Or the one I just survived. Or what happened to Scarlett. I’m guessing you an

Sarah took another drag of the cigarette, eyes clouded as she murmured,"They say people smoke to ease their troubles… So why do I still feel like shit?"Leon had expected anger. Yelling, cursing, maybe even a slap. What he didn’t expect was this eerie calm, this measured tone—as if they were simply catching up over drinks.“Because of the memories coming back?” he asked.Sarah leaned closer. She exhaled a stream of smoke, right into his face, her lips curling into a mocking smile.“Vivian’s really told you everything, huh?”Leon didn’t deny it.“We’re partners, after all.”“Partners?” Sarah sneered. “What’s left in Wilson Corp that’s worth partnering for? Come on, tell me. You didn’t drag me here just to breathe the same air, did you?”Leon met her eyes.“What if I did?”She tilted her head, slipping the cigarette between two fingers with practiced ease.“Since when is Mr. Spencer the romantic type?”“And what makes you so sure I’m not?”Sarah narrowed her gaze.“All this… ju

Melvin could read it clearly from Mrs. Sanders’ expression—she was dead set on not saying a word.“Fine. Please leave my house, Mrs. Sanders.”“You want to cut ties with me?” Her voice rose sharply. “Let me tell you something, Melvin—that’s never going to happen! As long as you’re alive, my blood runs in your veins. I gave you this life! And now, you’re going to talk to me like this? All for an outsider? You’ve broken my heart!”She clutched her head and swayed on her feet.Melvin had intended to leave immediately. But seeing her like this, he couldn’t bring himself to walk away.“Are you alright?”“Take me to the hospital. My head… I’m so dizzy…” She collapsed against him.Melvin had no choice. He supported her and took her to the hospital.---Meanwhile, at Leon’s villa.Sarah sat, arms bound to a chair, her expression bleak and cold. She looked up at Leon without surprise.“So this was your doing?”Leon stood before her, a twisted satisfaction tugging at the corner of hi
