Chapter 3

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah left the Chancer mansion without looking back, wheeling her suitcase behind her. Outside, she found Scarlett leaning out of her car window, blowing her a playful kiss. "Get in, baby! Time to celebrate!"

Though Scarlett called it a celebration, knowing Sarah was freshly divorced and likely down, she just took her to a music-themed restaurant. When she heard James's reason for the divorce, Scarlett couldn't help but scoff, "Charlotte Garnett again? What's so special about her that James is this obsessed?"

Sarah stirred her coffee listlessly. "No idea..."

She'd never actually met James's dream woman. Charlotte had already left for abroad when Sarah first met James. She'd only heard that Charlotte was gentle, accomplished, and understanding. When James had fought with his grandfather over her, Charlotte had been mature enough to convince James to let it go - which had led to Sarah's arranged marriage with James.

Seeing Sarah's reluctance to discuss it further, Scarlett changed the subject, resting her chin on her hand. "Well, at least James was generous - houses, cars, and eighty million..."

She glanced at Sarah and sighed. "Though I suppose you don't need any of it."

After Sarah's father died, she'd handed the company management to her cousin Melvin Sanders, content to live off the dividends. Everyone assumed the company belonged to Melvin now, and with the prenup between Sarah and James, her family thought she had nothing left.

"You can never have too much money," Sarah replied absently.

Looking at her friend’s plain and boring appearance, Scarlett felt a pang of sympathy. "That's right! Buy yourself some nice clothes and bags, show the Chancers what they're missing! But what are you planning to do now?"

Sarah's gaze grew distant. She had double-majored in psychology and music in college but had to take a break when her father passed away, then came three years as a housewife… She had never thought about what would come next.

Scarlett squeezed her hand. "No rush. Take your time figuring it out. For now, let's go shopping, and in a few days, I'll take you hunting up the mountains.” She winked excitedly. "And guess what? Zachary Reynolds will be there too."

Sarah raised an eyebrow in surprise. Zachary Reynolds, the mysterious third son of the real estate empire, wasn't known for joining such events. But her curiosity quickly faded.

After lunch, Sarah wasn't in the mood for shopping. She just handed over her card and had the staff deliver everything Scarlett picked to her apartment.

Before leaving, Scarlett suddenly remembered something. "Oh, Sasa - I know you've been busy, but Professor Wells hasn't been well lately. You should visit him when you can."

Professor Wells had been Sarah's psychology mentor in college. She made a mental note to visit him as she headed back to her apartment.

After leaving the Chancers, Sarah had moved into a small apartment near Scarlett's place. It was regularly maintained, making it perfect for temporary accommodation.

But as she approached the building, she spotted James leaning against his car, waiting. A woman sat in the passenger seat - delicate features, gentle eyes, the perfect picture of feminine grace.

Sarah glanced at her sideways. She could see why James would fall for someone like that.

The woman stepped out of the car and walked over with James, her arm linked through his. With a warm, gracious smile, she extended her hand, "Hello Sarah, I'm Charlotte Garnett."

“Reason?” Mr. Garnett snapped. “Go on, tell me. What excuse could possibly justify kidnapping someone from the Sachs family? Are you tired of living? I suppose James is divorcing you because of this too, isn’t he?”“Dad, is money and status all you ever care about? Do you really not care about me at all?” Charlotte’s voice cracked. To her, this felt like betrayal. To her father, it meant nothing. Her tears held no weight in front of the collapsing company. Mr. Garnett didn’t even glance at her, only continued to lash out.“Stupid. Absolutely stupid.”Mrs. Garnett finally stepped in and wrapped her arms protectively around her daughter. “Enough. She already feels awful. You are her father. Don’t you care about her at all?”“What good does caring do?” he roared. “Look at her. Does she even understand the consequences of what she’s done?”Charlotte’s chest tightened. “Dad, don’t forget everything the Garnett family has today is because of me.”“So that gives you the right to destro

Steven knocked on the door with a heavy expression.“What is it?” Reynolds asked. At this point, nothing surprised him anymore. As long as people existed, there would always be someone capable of doing something outrageous.“Miss Sanders met with a private investigator this afternoon,” Steven said quickly.Reynolds frowned slightly. “Why would she meet a detective?”“She is trying to uncover the truth about something.”“What truth?”“We don’t know yet. That detective is tight-lipped.”Reynolds nodded in understanding. “People in that line of work don’t reveal their client’s information.”Still… he was curious. What exactly was Sarah investigating?“Update me when you learn more,” he said, massaging his brow before sitting back down.Steven left the office without another word.---Early the next morning, Charlotte received a call from her parents. They sounded frantic, so she rushed home immediately, unaware of what had happened.Exhausted, she stepped into the house, onl

Even though Mrs. Mendes refused to overturn the case, Sarah still made sure they could stay here. She knocked on the door. When Mrs. Mendes opened it and saw Sarah standing there, she grew flustered.“Miss Sanders… w-what brings you here?” she asked nervously.“Mrs. Mendes, I only came to check on you. You don’t have to be so tense.”Sarah had originally hoped to persuade her to revisit the case, but one look at Mrs. Mendes’s reaction told her there was no chance.Mrs. Mendes let out a small breath of relief and stepped aside to let her in. She poured a cup of tea, but before it even touched the table, tears rolled down her cheeks.“Miss Sanders… no mother doesn’t love her child. When Tina died, I wanted to tear the murderer apart with my own hands. But you know… I don’t only have Tina. I still have a son. I have to think about him.” Her voice trembled with grief.Sarah understood—all too well. But every time she saw Mrs. Mendes, she saw Tina’s face flash before her eyes. She sti

She placed the items she bought on the table.“Take them back. I don’t want them.” Her father’s voice was cold. “Do you really not know what you’ve done? You have the nerve to come home? You got kicked out by the Chancer family, and you still dare step into this house?”“Dad… even you don’t believe your own daughter?” Charlotte tried to keep her voice steady, asking each word carefully.“Don’t blame your father,” her mother said quickly. “He trusts whatever the Chancer family says too easily. But I believe you, Charlotte. I made all your favorite dishes.”Tears filled Charlotte’s eyes. “Dad, Mom… he wants to divorce me.”“Divorce?!” Her father exploded. “Do you know how humiliating that sounds? I will not be embarrassed like this. Get out!”Charlotte didn’t argue. She turned and walked toward the door, feeling strangely numb. Her own father didn’t believe her. She wasn’t even allowed to step into her own home. Her mother quietly followed her outside.“Charlotte, wait.” She grab

“A one million compensation?” Charlotte let out a cold, mocking laugh. “When you divorced Sarah, you gave her a whole villa and eight million. What is this supposed to mean? That I am not worth that much?”“That was compensation. You know very well why.” James’s voice stayed flat. “You are the one who did wrong here.”Charlotte picked up the agreement and flipped through it. “So the child goes to you, and I do not even get visitation rights. I am not agreeing to that.”She let out a broken, hysterical laugh and threw the agreement at him.She lifted her head and stared at the room around her. “I designed every corner of this place. Every piece of it is mine. You can really just throw me away like this?”“I will replace everything.” James placed the agreement calmly back onto the table.Charlotte let out a sharp, bitter laugh. She grabbed a vase and smashed it against the floor. “If you’re going to replace it all, then I might as well break everything first!”She went wild, smash

“I would really like to see how exactly you plan to ‘never let me go,’” Charlotte snapped. She had truly considered going through with her threat moments ago, but time was running out.She dialed Henry Wilson, told him to deliver the agreement to Sanders Group, and hung up.Everything began falling into place.Melvin signed the agreement.Shortly after, he received Caleb’s message: Quincy had been rescued safely. When Melvin went home after work, he told Sarah every detail without leaving anything out.“I had no idea you secretly bought Wilson Group shares,” Sarah said, stunned.Melvin smiled. “It was a long time ago. Both Zachary and I hold some. With him involved, the transfer was easy.”Sarah looked at him thoughtfully. “Melvin… how did you answer her question?”“I… did not say anything special.” Melvin quickly looked away from her.Seeing she was about to dig deeper, he immediately changed the subject. “By the way, we finally found the person who recorded the video.
