Duel at the Aventos Lake

They crossed the Bolandis River first before they have reached Aventos Lake. It was in the heart of a ferny forest. The moonlight streaks through the lake, sheening like a silver plate. Atop of it is a large bubble, sheltering Asharo inside, giggling and sucking his thumb.

The water here is caressing.

Dareen has fallen asleep for quite a while. He might have reached limbo now, and yet here she is, wide-awake like sentry owls. The boy grew tired, whining like a girl as they crossed the river. He feared a wara-wara might appear from the water to attack him and eat his flesh. They are like dragon lizards, whose claws and teeth are of like to crocodiles.

I wonder who put this sort of fib again in his mind. I got weary too in convincing him to cross the river. I'd even wanted to hurl him on the other side, just to make our crossing easy. But still, Dareen has been a big help to me. I won't deny that. As if Galindra got possessed by a random spirit that she gave the young boy the sweetest smile she could ever give.

They are lying down under the canopy of a stumpy shaggy tree. Tall fern grasses cover them while they make their cloaks as bedsheets. Galindra is gazing at the flickering fireflies in the air, burning bright like the stars in the night sky. But one star caught her attention, outshining everything at the horizon, leaving a purple trail, enlarging as if...it is approaching us.

Krak! Krak! Krak!

'Ravens!' Galindra felt a sudden piercing pain in her head. 'Esper,' she's wincing, clenching her fists, trying to make barriers inside her mind. After getting successful, the sorcerer can finally move at ease. She jolts Dareen, 'Wake up! Wake up! We don't have time anymore.' Galindra stood up in front of the lake, moving her hands as if she was tugging a rope, and the bubble came near to her, where she pulled out Asharo. Then pushed it back, and the bubble popped and splashed down the lake.

Dareen stretched his arms. 'Galindra, it's still dark,' he complained in a voice full of drowsiness. Asharo starts to cry. He seems to sense danger. Galindra hushed the child by dabbing him. 'Dareen! Stop whining like a girl! They are coming now, so move faster!'

The sorcerers looked up to the sky; a crashing comet wanted to meet them, but they dodged, and the comet had hit the bark of the tree instead; sparked as the purple light burst with a puff of smoke, and Esper appeared from nowhere. 'How are you, my old friend?' Her words of greeting. She clenched her glowing fist, extracting energy from within, then threw it at Galindra. Shoosshh! But the white sorcerer raised her palm to block it. BHAGG!

Galindra gave the child to Dareen, who is now open-eyed and flustering. 'Take my horse now, ride east. I'll meet you in the Tower of Delsshai.' The young boy nodded and mounted her white horse to gallop. Esper noticed he is going to flee. Hence, she extracts energy again to throw at him. Shoosshh! Galindra dashed to deflect the energy blast to the lake. BHAGG! The water splashed. Esper smirked, 'Don't worry, my loyal servants will handle them...gently.'

'Not the child, witch! I warn you.' Shoosshh! This time Galindra was the one who threw energy, yet Esper could have blocked it either. BHAGG! The movements of their hands were swift and delicate, as well as the exchange of energy blasts. 'How stupid are you to think that a mere made-up prophecy can stop me,' Esper said.

'Whatever you are planning, stop it now. You are just starting another bloody war here in Yrthos. Many might lose their lives again. The realms

Naliligaw na si Dareen. Iyak na rin nang iyak ang sanggol. 'Shshhh. Tahimik ka muna ah. Magpapahinga lang tayo saglit.' Tumahimik ang sanggol sabay hagikhikSinuri niya ang paligid. Matatayog ang mga puno ngunit payat. Mukhang wala nang

mga

uwak.

'At ikaw iyon!'

naging

agila ang binata. Kreeeeee--arr. Saka lumipad palayo.

***

'Rako!'
