It is said that the person you consider your friend can also stab a knife to your back.

All her life, she always got what she wanted. Being an only child, mummy's favorite and daddy's little princess.

Her parents were rich enough so they fulfilled her heart desires with a smile every single time.

But the look on their faces as they sat opposite her in the living room and the inability to look her in the eyes said it all.

She was still in denial but no matter how many times she asked them, their answer remained the same.

"The company is dying! We are bankrupt" Her father said but he maintained his composure. His black hair had a little touch gray with light wrinkles around his eyes but his beard was completely gray.

"I still don't get why you 'sold' me!?" She angrily shouted. She was still in her pajamas but her long brown hair neatly flowed down her back.

"Jade, we had to do the next best thing for our company" her mother replied instead.

"The next best thing would be selling the company and…"

"And starting from scratch? We have long term investments, different shares and some debts as well. This mansion will be auctioned off if we don't pay up on time. We will be thrown out on the streets!" Her father explained. "Is that what you want?"

"Why didn't you tell me any of these?!" Jade was taken aback and she became pale.

Their company was facing a lot of difficulties and her parents didn't confide in her. They didn't trust her enough to tell her that they are in debt.

"Then what Jade? What can you really do about it? We give you all you want and we take responsibility for you. You work in that company. What can you possibly do when you literally eat out of our palms?" Her mother moved closer to her.

Jade was shocked. She looked between her parents. Is that what they think of her? A liability and now a commodity?

If they had a problem with taking care of her, they should have said it before now.

She isn't a tool or something that can be sold!

Who does that anymore?

"Is this the price I have to pay for depending on the both of you?" She stood to her feet. The hot tears in her eyes made her feel betrayed, cheated and vulnerable.

"Jade…"

"No!" Jade quickly ran upstairs.

"Listen, princess!" Her father made a move towards the stairs but his wife held him back with the shake of her head.

Jade threw herself on the bed.

Her parents woke her up with the news that they sold her to save their company.

In addition, they made it clear that it is now her turn to make a sacrifice for the company.

What did she really expect? She deserved this for always being dependent on her parents.

Who is this man and why?

"Bastard!" She cried her eyes out.

'You need to pack immediately' her father's voice rang in her head.

How can they look her in the eyes and tell her that she was sold?

No, how dare they sell her in the first place?

Did they really love her? They obviously don't love her!

She can never imagine 'selling' off her child for anything!

Jade wiped her face and went to the huge closet.

She brought out two duffle bags and four suitcases.

She looked at the photo frame which hung on the wall. They were a little happy family. Her father, mother and herself.

Maybe they didn't love her at all.

Jade moved to the window. Maybe she isn't ready for the new life they imposed on her.

They can't really force her into this when she isn't around, can they? She'll run away.

Jade climbed the window seat and opened her glass window with a smile then stepped on the windowsill. The fresh breeze of New York hit her face along with the beautiful view.

She can escape this madness and go far away from her crazy parents. They will never find her. She will have a free life.

She turned and looked at the photo frame.

Yes, they gave her everything she needed. Cared for her, provided for her, protected her, sent her to the best school, gave her a job and she'll forever love them for everything but this was too much to take in.

To wake up one morning and realize you don't belong to yourself anymore is just the worst feeling ever.

But maybe this is her turn to be responsible for them. They've always been there for her. So how can she abandon them when they needed her the most? She can't let them suffer because she loves her parents a lot and will do anything for them.

Including being with a stranger?

It is her time to have their backs. To repay them all the time and efforts they put into her future.

Jade turned to step down from the window but missed her step and fell out.

"Argh!" She shouted. She is going to die!

Oh great!

Just when she accepts to do the right thing, she is gonna die.

She closed her eyes in fear ready to accept the pain.

Although her room was on the second floor, she knew it would still hurt a lot.

Jade was scared for her life but instead of falling to the ground and breaking two or more bones, she felt two strong arms tightly caught her when she finally landed.

She stopped shouting and slowly opened her eyes. She tightly held his shirt in a death grip.

Jade looked up only to find a godlike face staring down at her.

Icy blue eyes bore into her soul.

He had silk black hair that was in a rough quiff and thick eyelashes that complimented his eyes. His jaws were set and the dimples were faintly visible due to the lack of expression on his face but his purplish lips were slightly bent upwards.

He had a red stone earring on his left ear and a little scar on his jaw which was hardly visible but the stubble gave him a hot look.

Khalil hurried down the stairs, his footsteps echoing through the hallway. His servants informed him that Jade was waiting for him. He couldn't believe his eyes when he saw her standing in his foyer, two young boys by her side. For a moment, he thought it was a prank, but the look on his servants' faces told him otherwise. They knew better than to play tricks on him, especially when it came to someone like Jade. As he descended the stairs, Khalil's eyes locked onto Jade's, and he felt his heart skip a beat. She looked different, yet the same. Her hair was styled differently, and her eyes seemed more tired than he remembered, but the spark in them was still there. The boys standing beside her were the spitting image of Xavier, and Khalil's gut twisted with a mix of emotions. He had thought they were his once, had fought for them, only to discover they weren't. Now, seeing them with Jade, he felt a pang of longing. Khalil stopped a few feet away from Jade, his eyes drinking

The cold metal door creaked as Jade slipped into the small, dimly lit safehouse. Her heart thudded with every step she took. The silence was suffocating. She looked over her shoulder again, just to be sure she wasn’t followed.Raquel stood by the window, her arms folded, her profile lit by the thin strip of daylight sneaking through the blinds. She didn’t turn around.“You shouldn’t have come here,” Raquel said softly.Jade shut the door behind her and leaned against it. “Xavier’s after you.”Raquel chuckled dryly. “I’m aware.”He saw her that night. That night she helped Jade escape.“He thinks you helped me… He’s not going to forgive that, Raquel.”“I don't expect him to.”Xavier will forever be Xavier.Jade stepped further into the room, her voice almost in a whisper. “He doesn’t have the boys. He lied. He was bluffing… and I believed him. Raquel, if he doesn’t have them… where are they?”There was a long pause. Raquel turned, her face calm. Too calm.Jade’s breath caught. That n

The apartment was too quiet. Jade sat at the edge of her sons’ bed, her fingers lightly brushing over a small stuffed bear left behind in the rush of that night. The room still smelled like them, like clean cotton, crayons, and safety. It used to calm her. Now it only reminded her how empty the house felt. Her heart was at war. Was she wrong to try and run? Should she fight harder? Or should she just stay and play nice until she found a safer way out? He had the boys and she wants them back. Without him in their lives. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she blinked them away. No. She wasn’t going to break again. She had already handed in her resignation. Burned every bridge. She was ready to disappear, to take her boys somewhere Xavier would never find them. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere normal. But her plans fell apart the moment she learned Xavier had already taken them. Why would he do this before the week was over? He gave her time! Well, she trie

Jade paused at the threshold of Xavier’s office, the polished mahogany double doors looking like gates to a castle. She swallowed hard, steadying the tremor in her limbs. The room beyond glowed softly under warm lights, rich carpets, heavy draperies, walls lined with old portraits, the imposing desk at center stage. This place had once belonged to her. Now it belonged to him. She stepped forward, shoes whispering across the carpet. Her eyes swept the room, memorizing the place she had tried to leave behind, the throne he now occupied. Each familiar detail stung, the leather chairs, the shelves of books, the desk where many decisions had been made. Her throat felt tight. She's here again. Xavier sat behind the desk, hands folded, his face calm, too calm. He looked up, eyes locking on hers. The quiet flickered between them. “Jade,” he said, voice smooth, “back so soon?” Her chest clenched. She took a breath, trying to steady her voice. “I didn’t come

The house was silent when Jade crept through the hallway, every step measured. The moonlight filtered through narrow windows, painting pale stripes across the carpet. Her heart pounded so hard she feared the walls might hear it. She paused outside her sons’ door. A soft, even rhythm, a lullaby in breathing. Her boys slept, clutching small blankets. She swallowed hard. This was it. Raquel stood behind her, flashlight in hand, face pale but determined. “I checked the guards, the routes. We’re clear for now.” Jade nodded. She pressed a finger to her lips. “Let me just… one more look.” She touched her boys’ cheeks softly, memorizing. She kissed their foreheads. “Mommy’s going to take you somewhere safe. Forever.” They stirred slightly but stayed asleep. Relief flooded her, bitter and sharp. The door to her room was ajar. Light spilled from under. She froze. Footsteps echoed beyond, outside the room. Her body tensed. Raquel touched her arm. “That’s our signal.

She froze. There, in the living room, her boys were on the floor, building a fort with couch pillows. And sitting across from them on the armrest was Xavier, tapping away at his phone like nothing had happened. Her knees almost gave way. He looked up casually, a small smirk pulling at the corners of his mouth. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he said. Jade didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Liam saw her and squealed with delight. “Mommy!” Liam ran to her, hugging her legs, pulling on her arm. “Play with us!” Liam said. She knelt, hugging him tightly, her heart aching, relief washing over her in a wave that made her dizzy. But behind that relief… was rage. He’s playing with her. He knew she'd panic. He wanted this. She stood slowly, her eyes locked on him. “You think this is funny?” Xavier raised an eyebrow. “What?” “You told me I had a week.” He stood now, slowly, deliberately. “And you do. I just missed them. Thought I’d take them for the evening. Is that a crime?”
