My hand gently caressed Cara's face while she slept deeply. The doctor had attended to her and had left her to rest. Cara was deeply asleep now, so deeply that she didn’t stir at my touch at all.

In my other hand was an opened ring box. The ring that should be around her finger was still in the box. Tonight was never meant to be like this. Tonight should have been a sweet night. A dinner by the beach, make her smile, make her laugh, make her feel loved, have a dance with her and ask her to be mine, put a ring to it and be able to actually call her mine.

But instead tonight took a sharp turn to become the worst night I have had in years. The bruises on her body made my heart ache. My gaze still on the ring, I wondered how much more of these things Cara would have to go through if I put this ring to her finger.
