Maxwell ignored the bad feeling growing in his heart and reassured her, "It's okay. You don't have to skip duty for me. We have a long future ahead of us with many more opportunities. Jennifer, I won't clip your wings and stop you from pursuing your career."

Jennifer's eyes stung with tears. Although she said nothing, she was trying her best not to relent. If she did, she knew she would be with him, even if it meant being labeled a mistress or losing herself for him.

The next morning, Maxwell and Jennifer got up and went to work as usual, seemingly no different from any other day. Yet, Jennifer still felt guilty and was starting to regret it. She shouldn't have let Rachel's words get to her and decided out of spite not to prepare any gift for him.

"Happy birthday," she said awkwardly before heading to work. "I'm sorry I didn't prepare a gift for you this year."
