“She said stop!” Henry gritted his teeth, his grey eyes glaring at the drunk man in front of him.
He had been watching the young lady drinking non-stop for the last hour with no intents of approaching her but he was curious to hear her story. She seemed sad and it was clear she had chosen alcohol as the escape route of whatever that was bothering her.
He had only planned to watch her from the corner of the bar without letting their paths cross until the pervert started to pester her.
“I-I thought she was alone.” The man slurred before backing away slowly.
“Get lost!” Henry hissed and the man scrambled off.
“And who are you?” The lady with straight brown hair watched him closely with narrowed eyes.
“You do know how dangerous it is for a lady to be drinking alone by this time of the night, right?” Henry stared down at her.
He had an indifferent look on his face but he found it hard to stop staring at the gorgeous being in front of him. He wanted to commit each of her features to his memory. And he didn’t even know why.
“And why do you care?” She scoffed, reaching out for the glass of whiskey.
“You have drank enough.” Henry stopped her by holding her wrist.
Her eyes fell to his hand on her wrist and she chuckled under her breath.
“Men. Always thinking they can tell me what to do with my life.”
Henry frowned at her statement and retracted his hand. He wasn’t one to interfere in one’s life, especially that of a stranger. But there was just something about this lady.
Something that made him want to protect her from all the hungry eyes in the bar, waiting to make their move on a vulnerable lady.
“I must have overstepped my boundaries. I just wanted to-”
“Forget about it. Just leave me alone.” She got up from the stool but lost her balance.
Henry stepped forward and caught her in his arms before she could fall to the floor. The strange lady nuzzled her face in his chest with her eyes closed.
“I hate you. I hate you.” She murmured something incoherent under her breath.
“What mess have I gotten myself into?” Henry sighed, adjusting the sleeping lady on his arms.
He carried her out of the bar after paying her bill and getting her coat and bag. His right-hand man, Alex, opened the door of the backseat without even a change in his demeanour.
If there was one reason Henry had kept Alex by his side for the past seven years, it was because of how unflinchingly loyal Alex was. If Henry called Alex to help him with a dead body, his man would do it without a single question.
Henry placed the lady in the backseat and she crawled into a ball like a child. He then moved to the passenger’s seat as Alex started the car.
“Where to, sir?” Alex asked.
Henry checked out the sleeping figure from the rearview mirror.
“You bastard…” She blabbered.
Henry had no idea where she stayed and she didn’t look like someone who could give him a concrete answer at the moment.
“The nearest hotel.” Henry muttered before putting on his seatbelt.
As soon as Alex parked the car, Henry took the lady into the hotel room while Alex made the payments. In order to make sure that she was safe, he ordered Alex to pay a hotel attendant to watch her through the night.
Henry glanced at her on the hotel bed and shook his head slightly. He had no idea what led her to drinking this much but she sure was an irresponsible lady to have ignored her safety this way.
“Sir?” Alex called and nodded his head to inform Henry that he had negotiated with the hotel attendant.
Henry got up to leave the room but he was held back with a tight grip on his sleeve.
“Don’t leave me. Please, don’t leave me.” The lady’s eyes were closed but her voice was begging him earnestly.
For a split second, Henry was torn between staying behind and leaving the room. But he gently removed her hand from his sleeve and turned to leave.

Henry got out of his car, heading into his son’s school with Alex leading the way. He had gotten a call this morning from the office that his four-year old son, Ryle, had gotten violent with another child.
The principal had called him personally and urged Henry to come to the school as soon as possible.
Henry found this strange and suspicious. He knew Ryle could be stubborn sometimes but he was hardly aggressive.
“Has the hotel attendant given you a call?” Henry asked as they headed towards the principal’s office.
“Yes. She informed me that the lady had left the room thirty minutes ago.” Alex responded.
Henry said nothing else, simply nodding his head. He had half-expected her to ask for the number of the person who saved her from the pervert last night but it seemed gratitude wasn’t in her morals either.
Why was he even expecting her to give him a call?
“I can’t believe a father would raise his son this way!”
Henry frowned when he heard voices coming from the principal’s office. The door was ajar so he remained by the doorway, wanting to see what was causing the spectacle.
“I heard he’s a single father and a wealthy man as well. This is what happens when you neglect children and let nannies raise them!”
Henry scoffed under his breath at the scenario. So now, they wanted to teach him how to raise his son?
His eyes moved to a corner in the room where he saw a tiny frame sitting on the floor. Henry blazed with anger and kicked the door wide open.
Everyone in the room jumped and turned towards him with surprised faces.
“M-Mr. Fitzgerald.” The principal stared at Henry with a nervous smile on his lips.“Ryle, are you okay?” Henry strode into the office and walked past the man to reach for his son.“Daddy.” Ryle sniffed, more tears rushing out of his eyes when he saw his father.“Why are you crying? Are you hurt anywhere?” Henry knelt on the floor, assessing his son’s body to ensure he was unhurt. His anger was simmering within but he kept it at bay. Comforting Ryle and ensuring he was fine was the only thing that mattered for now.“Daddy.” Ryle wrapped his tiny arms around his father’s neck and Henry patted his back to calm him down. When Ryle’s sobs died down, Henry got to his feet with Ryle on his arms and he turned towards the insensitive adults in the room. It was the principal and two other women whom he assumed one was the mother of the other child involved in this incident.“A child is crying and instead of you trying to calm him down, you’re busy questioning my parenting methods?” Henry hisse
“Ahh!” Anaya winced at the excruciating headache that hit her as soon as she opened her eyes. Groaning, she patted the bed to search for her phone only for her to pause with trepidation. Something was very, very wrong. Jolting up, Anaya looked around the strange room with fear. “What on earth am I doing here?” She whispered under her breath. To make things worse, Anaya couldn’t recall how she ended up here. She patted her body and sighed with relief when she realised she was still dressed.“What happened?” She asked out loud to no one in particular as she tried to search her memories. The last thing she remembered was drinking about three bottles of whiskey to drown the pain of being cheated on and discarded by her boyfriend of five years. After that, everything was hazy.Anaya heard the door being opened and she looked around for anything she could use as a weapon. Instead, she saw a young lady dressed in black and gold uniform stepping into the room.“Oh, you’re finally awake. How
Anaya arrived at the address sent to her by the matchmaking agent. She had implored for them to set a date as soon as possible and they made sure her request was fulfilled. The restaurant was a cool place with just a few customers having dinner. The romantic music playing in the background added to the sophisticated and classy decor.A gentle smile slipped onto her face as she stepped inside. The agency had already done well by arranging a romantic setting.“Good evening, ma’am. May I know the name of your reservation?” A waiter approached her and asked.“Yeah, Cupid’s Little Assistant. Anaya Robinson.” Anaya informed him and he nodded before opening the tablet in his hand.“Yes, I see your name here. Table 5 is your table.” He led the way to the table and she followed behind him.“Your date hasn’t arrived yet. Should I help you with water or anything before he arrives?” “Just water will do. Thank you.” Anaya settled on the seat, feeling a bit queasy now that she was just a few minu
“You-” She said the same time he spoke. Her memory sharpened as his gaze tightened on her. It all came rushing back–this was the man who saved her two days ago!Chuckling, Anaya got to her feet and placed her hand forward. “We finally get to meet again, Mr. Fitzgerald. Anaya Robinson.” “Henry Fitzgerald.” His large and warm hand covered hers gently. “Nice to meet you, Henry Fitzgerald.” She smiled before settling back on her seat. She didn’t want to assume but the fact that she was here, just two nights after he saved her bothered her beneath her polite smile. How was she to explain that this was a total coincidence?“So, matchmaking? I would have thought that a man like you could get any girl he desired with a flick of his fingers.” Anaya started a conversation with a casual tone.“I am not looking for someone to kiss my feet because of my money or my looks. Which is why I opted for anonymity.” Henry leaned back on the chair, his sharp gaze on her. “And you?”“Well, I need to get m
Anaya stared back at Henry, not knowing how to respond to his declaration. If he had a son, why was he looking for a wife? Was he divorced? Did she have to worry about his son’s mother?Numerous questions roamed her head at the same time but she could only find her back to say. “I see…” Her voice faltered as she tried to find a suitable response. “And is his mother aware…?”A dark look flashed across his face before he composed himself. “I am a widower.” Anaya couldn’t help but blanch out with shock. She had expected a lot of things from her date tonight but meeting the man who saved her and having him confess that he was a widower wasn’t in her list of expectations.“I am sorry.” She mumbled, the air getting awkward now. Was that even the right thing to say?“Sorry for what? Are you the culprit who took my wife away from me?” Henry deadpanned.Anaya opened her mouth to speak but it was futile. His curtness was definitely something she needed to get used to–if they intended on going
“Shut up!” Daisy exclaimed. Anaya grinned at the shock on her friend’s voice. She was getting ready to see her uncle with Henry when her childhood friend, Daisy, called. When she told her friend she was getting married in less than a week, she knew all hell was going to break loose.“You’re kidding! No, you’ve got to be kidding me, Ana!” There were some noises in the background before the voice cleared up again.“Oh, Daisy, I wish I was. Everything just happened so fast. It’s a contract marriage. I just need someone to help me get Mom’s trust fund before Charles decides to get his hand on it.” Anaya moved to her jewelry closet to get something to match her outfit.“Contract marriage? What are you, Anaya? Some protagonist in a fiction novel?” Daisy scoffed.“At this point, my life has been like a freaking fiction. Might as well roll with it.” Anaya put on the dangling silver earrings.“Anaya, why don’t you take some time to think about this? I know your uncle has been pressuring you to
Anaya stepped out of her car when she saw a black BMW pulling up in front of her uncle’s mansion. Wrapping the light shawl around her shoulders, she crossed the street just as Henry got out of his car.For a moment, she was dazed by his charming looks. She had seen a lot of handsome men in her lifetime but there was something about Henry that always put her on an edge. His chiseled features were accentuated by the crisp navy blue suit he put on which brought out his muscular physique in the most perfect way. His sleek black hair was brushed back, placing his face in full display. The subtle silver shirt added a touch of class to the overall look.“Good evening.” Henry greeted with a nod then his eyes travelled down her body. Anaya’s lips parted a little but she didn’t know if it was because of the chilly weather or the fact that Henry was openly checking her out.If there was one thing she has learned about Henry since they met, it was that he was never subtle with his actions or word
A firm grip on her hand made Anaya snap out of her shock. She turned to look at Henry who seemed unfazed by the numerous pairs of eyes on him.“Are you okay?” His voice was soft and comforting. Gulping, she nodded even though she was feeling otherwise inwardly. She had already braced herself to tackle her uncle and aunt, confident she would be able to handle two opponents. But now, the game has changed. Three more of her enemies were present and her head was spinning already.“Anaya!” Her uncle’s loud voice boomed across the room as he stepped towards them. “It’s so good to see you again.” He opened his arms and pulled her for a side hug.“You too, uncle.” Anaya responded with a tight voice, pushing away from him slightly. “Good evening, aunt.” She greeted the tall woman with sharp cheekbones.“Welcome, darling.” Samira smiled before turning her gaze to Henry.“Uh, uncle, this is my fiance, Henry. Henry, meet my uncle and aunt, Charles and Samira Frederick.” Anaya introduced and Henry
Anaya tapped her laptop screen, analyzing the sales chart Maia had prepared for her. With the new investment, things have been going smoothly in the company and she couldn’t be any happier.Technically, she had no urgent need for her mother’s trust fund anymore but she still needed to get a hold of it before her uncle tried to act cunning.A soft knock came from the door before Maia walked in, holding her tablet. “Boss, the report from the investigator is out.” Maia handed her the tablet.Anaya had hired a private investigator to look into the incident at the yacht. If she wanted to find out who this person was, she needed to be one step ahead of him or her. Virtually everyone who attended the party was an acquaintance of Henry and a stranger to her.Why would a stranger want her dead?“Nothing?” She frowned at the report from the investigator.“Yes, he said there was nothing suspicious. Not even a circumstantial evidence that would have implicated any of the guests.” Maia said grimly
Soft sunlight snuck into the room through the curtains and Anaya groaned slightly, stretching her limbs. However, her hand touched something hard which made her pause for a moment.Turning her head slowly to the side, the sight she saw was adoring. Henry was sleeping soundlessly with his black hair sprawled all over his head. His arm was around her as though his body naturally found hers during the night. He looked peaceful as he slept. Almost like the weight he carried on his shoulders when he was awake was too heavy for him.Anaya hesitated, her hand reaching out to comb his hair just when she noticed something by the door. Her eyes widened as her lips parted with shock. She was mistaken. It wasn’t a thing but someone.“Good morning to you too, Anaya.” Margeret's smile certainly didn’t reach her eyes.Shooting up from the bed in an instant, Anaya swayed a bit from the slight ache in her head from her sudden movement. “G-Good morning.” She mumbled under her breath while trying to sta
Anaya closed her laptop with a huff, falling back on the bed with exhaustion. Her hair laid behind her as she stared up at the ceiling with boredom. It has been three days since she returned home after the incident, yet, she hadn’t stepped a foot out of the room.Henry hired someone–a menace–to take care of her every need. As soon as she woke up, the woman helped her to the bathroom to take her bath, she cooked for her and even helped her read her emails. Each time she tried to stand up from the bed, the woman would hit her back with a lecture of how she needed to rest in order not to suffer complications later. Anaya would have thought she was pregnant at the rate Henry was being overprotective of her.The first few days she tried to play along because her body did need the rest but today was the last straw. She needed to get out of the room before she ran mad.Two rapid knocks sounded at the door and she looked up to see Henry leaning on the doorway with a smile. “How are you?” He a
Henry rested by the balcony of this office, the breeze at the top floor soft against his face. He quickly had to rush out of the hospital for an urgent meeting with a client. Though, he stayed a few minutes watching Anaya soundlessly sleep in his arms.He hadn’t felt that in ages. Someone naturally fitting into his arms like they were made for each other. It reminded him of the many years he had woken up with Lauren by his side. Those quiet and intimate mornings they shared in each other’s arms were one of the most precious memories he had of her.He felt terrible. Like he was betraying her by thinking, worrying and caring for Anaya. He didn't want things to turn out like this. He didn’t want to see her as his wife but only as Ryle’s stepmother.Still, he needed to find out what happened to her last night. Something was off, and he trusted his gut instincts more than anything. He didn’t believe the story she cooked up for him. Not one bit.Anaya hadn’t slipped from the yacht due to ca
Her grip on the phone tightened and she was rendered speechless. She hadn’t thought she would be talking to the person who tried to kill her as soon as today.Noticing the curious pairs of eyes on her, she dropped the phone from her ear and forced a smile–polite but firm. “Can you both excuse me for a while? I need to answer this.” Daisy hesitated, looking like she was about to say something before stopping herself. Maia narrowed her eyes slightly but nodded.“Of course, I’ll be right outside.” Maia left the room and Daisy followed after. As soon as the door closed behind them, Anaya placed the phone in her ear. “Who are you?” She gritted out and a low laughter rumbled. It sent chills down her body. The voice wasn’t human–it had been altered by some technology so she couldn’t deduce if it was a male or a female.“Revealing who I am too soon would only spoil the fun, Anaya.”“Playing with a person’s life is something funny to you?” Anaya hissed. “What do you want? Tell me and let thi
Anaya blinked her eyes open, squinting as the morning light filtered into the room through the window blinds. She stretched her aching limbs softly and then, she paused. Something felt wrong.Turning to her side, she realized that she was alone in the room. A frown adorned her face. She wondered if Henry sleeping with her on the bed last night had been a dream. Then, she spotted something from the corner of her eye. The note laying next to her pillow confirmed it had been real. She reached for the note and read the sharp but neat handwriting which said.“Something urgent came up and I had to step out of the office. You were sleeping soundlessly and it would have been a crime to wake you up. Get your much needed rest.- H.F”A smile spread onto her lips as she read his rushed words over and over again. Running her fingers over the paper, her heart tightening as she didn’t know why something as tiny as his handwriting made her this happy.Interrupting her thoughts, a soft knock hit the d
Anaya’s chest felt heavy, almost like tons of bricks were placed on top of her body for hours. She breathed in, the air around her stiff and sterile. Her limbs were unmovable and it took a lot of effort on her part to open her eyes. She stared at the blank white ceiling for a while, trying to organize her thoughts amidst her aching head. The soft beeping sound coming from a device made her feel as if she were in a dream. Then, she saw someone–Henry. He was seated in a chair beside her bed, slumped and still. His disheveled hair was damp and his clothes were wrinkled like he had taken a shower with them on. His eyes were open but he was staring at the wall across him, far off from reality. She shifted slightly and Henry shot up immediately, his eyes dilating with panic. “Anaya.” Anaya licked her dry lips and forced herself to speak audibly. “What…happened?” Henry released a deep breath, relief flashing across his face like all he ever wished for was to hear her voice. “Y-You fell ove
Henry rushed down the deck, trying to calm his racing heart. He had just almost overstepped his boundaries with Anaya and he cursed himself for trying to take advantage of the moment. He couldn’t remember the last time he had acted so irrationally but he was grateful he was able to stop himself before actually kissing her. He had to remind himself that their marriage was nothing but a contract of mutual benefits and he couldn’t breach any of their terms and conditions.Still, he found it hard to get the look on Anaya’s face, after he pulled away from her, out of his head. She looked…disappointed–almost like she had been craving for him to kiss her.Or maybe he was mistaken and his brain was just cooking up scenes to mask his guilt. He sighed under his breath. He needed a stronger liquor to drown his thoughts and possibly erase the embarrassment of his mistake. “Where’s Anaya?” Yara asked, stopping him on his way to the bar.Henry gritted his teeth, not wanting to tell Yara what just
Soft lights glittered over the dark water as the yacht swayed under the night tides. Anaya stepped onto the deck, the pulse of the lively music blasting in the air. The atmosphere was electric and it was clear everyone was having a good time already.“I’ve never been to a yacht party before.” She leaned on her tiptoe for Henry to hear her voice over the loud music. “The Yus yacht parties are the best in town. Private and unhinged. Stick close to me.” Henry pulled her closer to him as more people filled into the yacht.Anaya adjusted the mask on her face–a silver piece with black curls swirling over her eyes. It was a mask themed party and Henry had prepared everything even before she had the chance to visit a boutique. She had no idea how he managed to get her perfect size but the flowing satin gown snuggled her body appropriately. She matched the silver dress with strappy heels embedded with crystal accents.Henry’s outfit was simple as well—a black dress shirt, grey pants and a pla
