“You like her?” I whispered to Leo while we joined the others in getting out of the hall. The blonde guy who had told us where to sit was far ahead and I’m taking a wild guess here by thinking he is in my class. And from the looks of it, I may be right. We passed the junior block and walked down a hallway with a square courtyard on one side into the senior block. Just down that hallway was the notice board where a group of Class 1 to 3 seniors were checking out the info on the notice board. I didn’t miss the curious glances many of the students passed my way.
Believe me, I’m not an attention seeker but I can never seem to go anywhere without pulling attention.
As we turned past a column, one of the four columns set at the edge of another courtyard with grass and flowers, Leo caught my gaze.
“Like who?”
“Emmy,” I tried to hide the envy in my voice.
He frowned. “Who’s Emmy?”
“The girl who sat in front of us at the assembly. You said she was pretty.”
“Oh, she? Yeah, she is, any problem with that?”
A lot. “No, I just thought…well you seemed interested in her that’s all,” I replied with a noncommittal shrug that was very much committal.
“You seem to be more interested in her than I am,” Leo smirked at me and if gravity wasn’t holding me down, I kid you not, I would have levitated.
Suddenly somebody bumped into me and nearly knocked me off my feet. Leo reached out to hold me before I could face plant my face in the ground.
“Watch where you’re going, newbie.”
Oh, it’s that voice. I’m guessing I’ll be hearing it very often now.
“You bumped into me, Emmy.”
She and her minions stood in our way and she crossed her arms over her chest. Too bad she has nice boobs. Why do girls like this always have it all?
“Oh look who is so smart. What are you, stalker?”
“Eww look at that hair, did a bird nest there?” one of the minions said. I’m guessing she and the other minion are twins or maybe their plastic surgeon only knows how do one look.
Anyways, just kidding, they are actually pretty. And that sucks.
“Don’t even get me started on those shoes,” the other one said.
The hallway had gone kinda silent with a few students watching us. No doubt Emmy and her wing women draw attention everywhere they go. Unfortunately, this is not the kind of attention I want on my first day of school especially after I got on the wrong foot with Mary Thompson.
I started to shoulder my way past them when Emmy pushed me back. She is surprisingly strong for her size.
“What do you want? Aren’t you tired of playing into every 2000s high school teen movie? They called, they want their plot back.”
“Ohhu look who has a great comeback. But I’m not interested in you,” she waved her fingers in a discarding gesture. “I’m more into you,” she batted her lashes at Leo. “Who are you?”
“Leo.”
“Sexy. You should be with me. I am on the Student Welfare board, let me show you around the school.” She hooked her arm through his and started to lead him away but Leo held back with a glance at me. Emmy stopped. “You can’t possibly be with this patch doll.”
“Actually, Leo is my…” I started when Leo cut in.
“She’s my sister,” he said.
“Oh. Could have sworn she was Anastasia from Cinderella. Whatever, I’m sure she’ll find her way among the nerds or the outties, no one talks about those. So what do you say Leo, let Emerald take you around school, hot biscotti."
It wasn't a question, it was an order.
And right before my eyes Emerald led Leo away. He took one look at me and gave a helpless shrug before turning toward the deceptively charming smile she was flashing his way.
Her minions hit me on their way to join them.
“At least you tried. Some of us couldn’t stand a chance against her,” someone said beside me. I looked to see a brunette girl with her arms crossed over her chest as she watched Emerald and Leo with their entourage leave.
“Who are you?” I queried.
“Whoa hold your horses. I’m a friend. Actually, I’m one of the outties, I’m not smart enough to be a nerd.”
She wasn’t that pretty and I knew right away she was the kind to be a people pleaser. We call those ass lickers where I’m from. “Who gets to say what you are?”
“Emerald, duh. She basically runs the school. You’re new here but you’ll get the hang of the hierarchy.” She looked away and smiled at me. “I’m Lindsay by the way, president of the Outties. Welcome to the club.”
I looked down at her hand. “Uh no thanks,” I brushed her hand aside. “Just because Emerald says I’m an outty doesn’t mean I’m one. Who is she anyway? And who names their child after a stone.”
“Who names their child after a root?" Lindsay retorted.
Touché. I fought a smile. “Go fuck yourself,” I told her as I walked in the opposite direction Emerald and Leo went.
“Ouch. You’re not very friendly.”
“And you are not very smart if you don’t keep your distance from me. No wonder you didn’t make it among the nerds.”
Lindsay laughed. “You have a huge mouth on you, Ginger. I hope you make it here, you might actually make this year bearable.”
“Yeah sure I will when Emmy picks me apart bit by bit. And try to remember to call me Ginny. Not Ginger.”
Lindsay shook her head. “Don’t sweat it, you’re not that special. That’s how she treats every new student. She has to assert her dominance. She’s going to be head girl, everyone knows that.”
Of course and we think we are evolved species. I really could beat her to a pulp in front of everyone but look this is a new Ginny and I don’t want to insult Maggie by wasting this opportunity she has given me.
“This is our class,” Lindsay said as she led me through the crowd. She gave me a guilty glance. “I peeked through your file and found out that you are in Class A. However, Leo is in Class B. There is another class and that’s Class C.”
I couldn’t help the frown that marred my brow. “Is there a reason for the distinctions?”
“You wrote an entrance exam, didn’t you? They grade you based on your IQ.”
Lindsay led me to an unoccupied desk and slammed her hand on it. “Unfortunately we are in the same class as Emerald.”
“We?”
“Turns out I’m not so dumb after all.” She smiled and took the sit beside me. “Anyways, whether you like it or not you’re stuck with me and we are both stuck with Emerald.” She suddenly laughed when she caught the look on my face. “Don’t look so disappointed. I’m not that bad.”
“Yeah, but you sound desperate for friends.”
“I am. I used to be in Class C until the last session when I came third behind Emerald and her Ken. Although Emmy spread a rumor that I fucked Mary Thompson to get here.”
It was my turn to laugh. “You mean Ken as in Barbie Ken?”
Her brown eyes lit up as she gave me a new look. “Ginny I think you and I might just become best friends. Pity his real name is Parker and not Ken."
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah right, in your dreams. So is that Parker over there?” I used my gaze to indicate the tall dark-haired boy with hazel eyes surrounded by a group of other boys. They had the build of football players and guess what? The other girls in the class were staring off in their direction. There’s no way you would miss that!
To be fair, he is an eye candy though so I can understand why they are staring. And that smile of his increased his already off-the-chart sex appeal.
Even Lindsay who had turned to look in his direction was staring dreamily.
“Yup,” she practically sighed. “That is Parker.” She must have noticed me staring with an amused grin because she shook herself and looked away. “Anyway he’s out of reach for me. And you too. Actually, you don’t even stand a chance, he’s every bit as bad as Emerald. Unsurprising.”
“You don’t say,” I deadpanned. “Does he know his girlfriend is trying to hook up with my ‘brother’?”
“Don’t bother yourself with that, they understand their relationship. The rest of us are just living in their world.”
Lindsay continued to fill me up on Highschool gossip and by the time the first teacher of the day for us Class A students returned, Emerald was back in class looking prim but I know she’s been up to something – nobody spends a second with Leo and not fall under his bad boy charms – and I was already well – educated on the hottest news in school.
And also aware that somehow, Emerald and I will never become friends.
So we had classes right off the bat. Princeton isn’t joking about educating her students. As you may have deduced from my assignment to class A, I am pretty intelligent. I know you probably thought otherwise since you see how dumb I can be where Leo is concerned and how much I hate school but it’s not a big deal.Knowing the secrets of everyone in school was quite interesting, Lindsay likes to talk and she wasted no time dishing out the most juicy secrets, even those of the staff. It was kind of interesting getting to know my classmates through the secrets I know about them and while that made class tolerable, the stinging feeling at the back of my neck made it very much unbearable.Whose decision was it to put the redhead stalker in Class A?I looked behind me and there he was hiding behind his History textbook pretending to read while he was actually peeping off the edge and staring at me. I frowned to make him know I was watching and for a second he hid behind his book again.Mr. D
I stormed outside crushing grass beneath my boots and not caring at all if anyone saw me marching angrily to confront yet another person who wouldn’t leave me alone.“What do you want?” I demanded at the top of my voice.“You?”I almost tripped over my feet at that quiet and unexpected response. “What?!”“I’m here to make sure you stay and behave.”“And who are you to do that?” I asked indignantly, crossing my hands across my chest. Somewhere from the side of my eyes, I saw curious students watching inconspicuously from the lunchroom. Lindsay had made her way outside and was standing behind me.“Your bodyguard. I’m doing my job. Now get back in there.”“I don’t have to listen to someone who is paid to stalk me! You get out and stop trying to make me look like a fool.”His eyes traveled down the length of my gothic appearance down to my pinned skirt and boots. “You are doing a good job of that yourself.”His calm voice gritted on my nerves making me angrier. Isn’t stalking illegal? And
Once again she woke up with no recollection whatsoever of her dream. She probably will never remember. Yup that’s me. I sat up in my bed realizing that I must have fallen asleep last night while listening to my romantic playlist. One look at the je clock told me it was time to get my ass out of the bed and start getting ready for a school. I swung my legs over the edge of my bed and went to the bathroom to brush and clean up. My phone was low because I had been using it throughout the night which means I can forget about taking it to school with me. My laptop was still plugged to the power source. I frowned. No that’s not right. I didn’t plug it in last night. It had been full when I turned it on and still had more that half the battery when I turned it off. Beside the laptop on the table was an empty packet of chocolate chips cookies. I don’t eat chocolate chips cookies but whoever ate the one on my desk definitely enjoyed it because there was not so much as a crumb remaining.
I shot to my feet, furious, “What is it, creep?!”From the front of the middle aisle, the Librarian hushed loudly. Good thing she couldn’t see me, she would have likely thrown me out of the library if she knew what I looked like.Colin made sure the book was safely secure, he almost touched it reverently like a sacred book before rising to his feet. His eyes were a sharp brown and I suspect those eyes miss nothing. Strangely I could almost feel his gaze piercing my skin down to my bones.I tried not to feel uncomfortable so I wiped my frown and replaced it with a naughty smile. “I think I know what this is. Do you want to fuck the new student or are you here to fuck me up too?”He raised his head and his eyes widened. “I would never think myself worthy of such a thing, my lady.”Da fuck? His response stunned me to silence and for a second I could only stare at him. Then the urge to laugh came and somehow I found the strength to staunch it.Maybe Colin has a brain trauma or maybe he’s
We got home right after Stark and Briggs. Lance had just taken them inside from the private middle school Maggie enrolled them in. I slammed the door shut and made my less-than-quiet entry into the house, more than ready to get rid of my uniform, and put on some ripped jeans and a loose shirt. Asher has the best t-shirts shirts and I love to steal them, and though he complains and threatens me any time one of them gets missing, he never actually does anything.I passed Mason and Steph’s boys watching cartoons in the sitting room with Edna and Jayden’s sons.“Hi Ginny,” they greeted me as I made my way up the stairs.“Hello boys, how was school today?”Their responses ranged from ‘Great’ to ‘It was alright ' and ‘I didn’t like it.’ And I couldn't relate more to the last response.I was off to my bedroom before Leo got to his and by the time I dressed up in my suitable choice of clothes I was hungry and ready to devour 5 double burgers. Luckily, Steph who loves to cook, had made some pi
“You look so worked up this morning,” Lind observed as she came to my desk after the first class. Although we had gone to the hall earlier that day, there had been no assembly and so we had been sent right to class.“What happened?” She asked as she slid on my desk.“Someone ate chocolate chip cookies in my room.”Lindsay gave her a funny look. “Okay?” She drawled wondering where the conversation was headed. “You have siblings, what’s the big deal?”“And Emerald has drawn the line. She made it obvious she doesn’t want me here. She said as much this morning at the parking lot which is funny because Leo is literally with me and she’s not saying the same to him.”“Because he’s hot and you know that. Also why do you sound jealous? He’s your brother.”“Adoptive brother.”“Same difference.”I rolled my eyes. “You don’t understand. Leo and I are meant to be together.”She cocked her brows. “What in the ‘Help Me Stepbrother I’m Stuck’ is going on here?”“You don’t understand, Lind so don’t wo
What the…?Why do I have to step out?I could have pretended I wasn’t in the hall but Leo was staring at me, Lindsay was staring, Emerald was looking right at me with a smug expression, even Parker had turned in his seat to stare and the rest of my class was staring.Alright! You idiots, thanks for not covering me.“Ginger? You are in the hall, there’s no use hiding now. Step out,” Mary’s voice was forceful.I sucked in a deep breath to quell my beating heart. It was beating fast enough I’m surprised it hasn’t leapt out of my chest yet. And the hall was awfully quiet, so silent that a pin drop would have sounded like a bomb.I made my way to the stage I closed my eyes, regretting my decision to put on boots, I should have put on some flats. My shoes made heavy clicking sounds on the floor and in the silent hall it sounded like a judge’s gravel sealing my fate.Mary’s face was pinched as she took in my disfigured skirt and fishnets and I knew immediately why I had been called out.“Sta
I realized with a groan that I had just revealed our secret when her jaw dropped.“Fuck!” I cursed and threw the scissors in the ceramic. “Lindsay forget everything I just said.”“No fucking way! You are wolves?”“And you don’t think I’m lying?!” I asked wondering at the state of her mind.“No fucking way. Especially not when you just manifested a scissors out of thin air, there is no way you are lying about this.”I gripped the edge of the sink and debated within myself whether or not to wipe her memory. It’s something I can do if I put enough effort into it. The only downside is that wiping memories does something to me and I never can explain. Still it was worth a try given the severity of my actions. I have only known Lindsay for two days, there’s no assurance that she won’t spread my secret in excitement. I mean come on, how often do you meet a werewolf without freaking out?And Lindsay is an Outty, exposing my secrets will give her some popularity points and I hate to be the sac
Imagine my surprise and satisfaction when I saw that my laptop remained right where I had locked it. At least I know for sure that whoever has been sneaking into my room to use my stuff doesn’t know that I locked it. I should probably keep locking it from now on. As I pulled the laptop out of my drawer I thought about the possibility that it was Stark who had been coming into my room to use my laptop but Maggie had gotten one for her too and I know Stark well enough to know that she wouldn’t use my stuff without telling me. Besides whoever has been using my laptop has been checking stuff about school so that completely rules out any possibility that Stark is behind this. So I have come to one natural conclusion, someone snuck into my room. Whoever that person is is behind the chocolate chips cookies I found in my room and the same person used my computer to log into our class group chat. That person obviously has a grudge against Emerald. Now that one is not a surprise.Emerald has ma
I sat back in the seat thinking about what I had just seen. “No, there’s nothing to talk about.” Noah said nothing but I felt his eyes on me when be backed out of the street and went back out through the secret road and joined the main traffic again. I was wrong about Lindsay. I thought she was an annoying rich girl struggling to climb the social ladder in school. I thought she was treating me as a pity case, trying to befriend the outcast like a social savior of some sort. But her life was far from that she was…sad. Very sad. I couldn’t get the image of her toasting her sandwich in the pan and the sound of her tears from my mind. Why was she crying? Did even need to ask? Wasn’t it obvious? The way she hurried to make sure the vase was okay…I don’t know what else to think. I slumped back in the seat and reached into my boots for the note that I stuffed there. Who could have written it? Emerald had many enemies and anyone could be one of them. “Whatever you are thinking about,
I don’t know when the thought came but I remember thinking that whoever Lindsay’s driver is needs to be sacked for not noticing us behind him. If someone was behind us and Noah failed to notice I know I’ll be telling Maggie to replace him. The way it is though, I don’t think Noah will ever be caught lacking. The man is a true wolf and nothing misses his attention. The silver car went off the road and moved along a lone road toward private property and I expected Noah to go after it but surprisingly he went past the private road and continued to drive down. I sat up in the seat to glare at him. “We were following that car!” “And we are still following it.” “Yeah we were until you stopped going after it. It turned a corner right there.” “And that corner leads to a private road. I’m guessing you don’t want the girl in that car knowing that you are trailing her. This is the best way to prevent her from discovering that her classmate is a stalker.” “So how do you intend to find them
I couldn’t wait for the final bell and when it did ring I grabbed my books and shoved them into my bag, hurrying to get up and leave. If I leave early I can make it and do what I have to do.I know you are curious to know what that is, you will find out soon enough. Right now, I think what I am about to do is extremely dangerous and if I get caught , well, I don’t think I’ll be in too much trouble, I just think everyone in school will think I’m even weirder than they do now.I hurried to the pack and sure enough there was Noah as early as ever. I was about to smile, feeling that rush of warmth in my body again, when my joy was cut short when Miss Aurora ran across the pack to the car. She put her arms around Noah’s neck right in front of everyone who cared to look at them. She was smiling when she pulled back and as I got to them I heard them talking.“Thanks for last night,” she was saying.“It’s nothing,” Noah said in his sexy deep voice.Miss Aurora’s eyes were bright as she looked
I jerked my arm free from Colin’s hold as soon as he swung the door of the art room close. The place smelled of paint and wood and brushes and many of the easels were covered with tarps. The place looked airy since it was currently not in use, which was why the windows were shut.At least Colin hadn’t locked the door. Even if he did I’m sure that whatever he is I am faster than him with my wolf powers.“What’s the big idea?” I demanded.“The fact that you’re stalking me or the fact that you are surprise I actually noticed?”“That’s not an answer to my question,” I said defensively.“Why are you following me?”I scoffed. “What makes you think I am following you, Colin?” I crossed my hands in front of me and glared at him. “What do you have to hide?”He didn’t answer quickly. He was careful, watching my face as if he was trying to decide how much I knew. Not much from my perspective. In fact, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to know. I didn’t know what to think; first his odd behavior
By two in the afternoon the bell went off. Our next period was gym class. When we picked our subjects for our entrance exam into Princeton, I skipped gym because I kinda thought it would be unfair to surpass these poor human kids with my supernatural powers. Leo was on the football team. I don’t know how he plans to manage his powers when he has to play in slow motion with pathetic human speed.I’m sure he will figure it out though. He is not my concern right now.My target was moving out of class and I made sure I got behind him while still keeping a safe distance away. I didn’t want to lose him in case he slipped into the shadows or hid among students moving up and down the hall. Also the last thing I want is for him to notice I was onto him.I knew where he was heading to but I just couldn’t let him out of my sight. He turned around a corner same as other people. I did the same but waited a few feet behind so that he wouldn’t sense me. After a few minutes of walking we passed anoth
“Did Parker just leave after spending like 10 minutes with you?”I looked up to see Lindsay’s awe. She looked like Taylor Swift just offered her a ticket to her concert. She pushed the chair Parker just stood up from and very reverently lowered herself on it. I fought hard against rolling my eyes. Any second from now she might get home and take the chair to a museum because you know, Parker Farrell sat on it.“He did. What about that?”“I didn’t expect him to move on so soon and even if he was, I didn’t think you would be his next option.”I eyed her from the corner of my eyes. “Did ever occur to you that he came to pickup from where his girlfriend stopped?”She shrugged. “I don’t know, it never did. Maybe because Todd came over to talk to me. I didn’t think he even knew my name but he congratulated me on my promotion from C to A class.”I watched her go on and on about Todd while my mind drifted off to Parker. He was on his seat and Keith and come to join him. They were talking and l
Still not saying a word to each other, Leo and I got out of the car and made our way into the school building. There was a change in the atmosphere and was expected and everyone was silently moving from the front doors to the assembly hall. And in the assembly hall the administrators and teachers stood on the stage waiting as students filled in the seats. I went upstairs leaving Leo behind and took a seat away from him. My other classmates began to troop into the hall and leading then was Parker, Todd, Keith, Lizzie and Jeannie. Jeannie’s nose was red as if she had been blowing her nose all night but strangely her eyes were as dry as a desert. She looked up and saw Leo and immediately left her group of friends to hook her arm through his, that was the only time any sign of tears appeared in her eyes as she clung to him. “It’s so awful,” I heard her say. “I don’t think I can stand being here knowing that only a few hours ago Emerald had an accident here.” She turned her big blue eyes
Leo was downstairs having breakfast and he was sort of taking his time since the rain was still coming down heavily. I ignored breakfast because I didn’t want to sit at the table with him, I might just kill him if I do.I went into the kitchen instead where Maggie was holding a blueberry muffin for me.“I had a feeling you were going to skip breakfast this morning.”“I’ll be fine.” But I took the muffin and took a bite before dropping it on the kitchen counter in favor of a bottle of water. For some reason I couldn’t stomach food and it had everything to do with Emerald’s death. How can Leo who is actually friends with her bear to eat?“Should I keep that for later?” Maggie asked worried.“Uh – uh,” I said.I just couldn’t wait to get out of the house and so I snapped the hood of my sweater over my head and went outside to the garage through the kitchen door. Noah was waiting as always, dressed in suit, again. Almost immediately all thoughts about Emerald flew out of the window and I
