PAUL Reyes had gone to his boss' office one Monday morning. He had just got off the phone with Celine, his daughter and she had reminded him that her fees were due and yet to be paid. Paul was broke at the moment, he had been that way ever since his wife's burial and could barely managed to make ends meet. Celine understood her father's situation and also tried by taking part time jobs to also help keep the family standing, after all it was just her and her father in this world of distracted humans.
Paul went to his boss' office to ask for a salary raise and possibly an advance. He had worked with the company for a decade now and he had never asked for a raise. So he was pretty sure he was going to get his raise even though his instincts told him his boss was going to ask for something in return.Paul's boss was an elderly man, around eighty five years of age and was still fit as a fiddle.Mr Smith had life going for him, owning a multinational company and having so many sources of income that his 100th generation of grandkids could never go broke even if they were lazy as hell.He had toiled so hard to build this life that he had. Sadly he had only his grandson, Xavier, to hold on to his legacy. Mr Smith had given birth to a son but he had lost his life and that of his wife in an accident when Xavier was five years oldXavier had been in the care of his grandfather ever since then and they both had a bond that could never be broken. Xavier grew up to be business wise and also streetwise. He also grew up to be someone who didn't like commitments. He doesn't want to get married ever. Who would blame him, the married people around him never had happy endings. Take his parents for example, they died before they got to live their best lifes. This was a big issue between him and his grandfather because his grandfather wanted to have a continuous lineage."Good morning sir" Mr Paul greeted his boss as he walked into the office. Mr Smith looked up from his desk and smiled. He offered Mr Paul a seat."What brings you to my office the morning, Paul?" Mr Smith asked."Actually sir, I would love to ask for a favour..." Paul started to sayMr Smith shifted in his seat and payed full attention to his employee."Well sir, it's just that I need to ask you for two things, a raise and a salary advance" Paul asked.Mr Smith smiled and said..."Paul, you've been working with me for a decade now and never for once have you asked for a raise or even advance. Mind if I ask why you want it all of a sudden?"Mr Paul cleared his throat and sat well as he watched his elderly boss play with his pen."Yes, it's because of my daughter. She's a sophomore at college and her fees are already due. I need the money to pay her fees as soon as possible" He explained. At the mention of Paul's daughter, Mr Smith sat up and edged closer. His interest had been fully piqued."Your daughter? Celine?"Mr Smith had taken a liking to the girl even though he had only met her twice.Once when she had followed her father to work, he was impressed by her manners and good behavior. Her intelligence was also something that didn't escape his notice. The other time he saw her was at a church where he had gone to donate money to help feed the needy. He sighted her singing for the choir and immediately decided that she was going to become his granddaughter-in-law."Yes sir, Celine.... You know her?" Paul asked confused."I've met her on two occasions and if she's the reason you want a raise then I have a better offer for you" Mr Smith said with a mischievous grin making his wrinkles less obvious.Paul applauded his instincts for knowing his boss would want something in return. He prayed for it to be something he could do."How would you like to become a part of my family?" Mr smith said, still wearing that grin."Family?" Paul retorted. In his head he had thought, Mr Smith probably wanted to adopt his daughter."Yes, I want your daughter to get married to my grandson!"Paul was shocked by his boss's statement and he pinched himself to see if he was truly awake."But sir....if i may ask why?""She is a good girl and no one could be more perfect for Xavier. You know Xavier don't you?"Of course Paul knew Xavier. He ran the company alongside his grandfather. The young lad however was unnecessarily snubbish. So no one ever had the chance to form any kind of relationship with him. Except business related. He once fired a receptionist for licking her lips when she sighted him coming her way. Ever since then members of the staff were mindful of their way around him." I know your grandson, Mr Smith. What I'm not sure of is if the two young fellows will agree to this condition.""Don't worry, I'll handle my grandson. You just have to convince your daughter " Mr Smith said " You didn't even ask what was in it for you?"Paul had never been so confused in his life. Mr Smith must have noticed it so he spoke on. "If our kids get married, you'll be promoted to the board as a member of the board of directors. I mean you have all the qualifications for it. And if that happens, you won't ever need to ask for a salary advance or a raise" The old man explained with a grin on his face.My Paul was flattered, it was a very mouth watering offer and he'ld be dumb not to take it. All he had to di was get his daughter married and his dreams of been a board member will come true."I....i.....i.... I'll take to Celine about it" Mr Paul said and made to leave his bosses office." Alright Paul, I'll be waiting for your response"Mr Smith smiled and picked his cell phone. He called Xavier."We need to talk. Now!"Xavier was out with his friends on a boat cruise, that Monday morning when he got the call from him father. Who could judge the grandson of a wealthy billionaire for going on a boat cruise on a Monday morning while other people are working their asses off to make ends meet. Xavier's ends were never separated to begin with."We need to talk. Now!" His grandfather had sounded commanding over the phone, leaving Xavier speechless for a brief moment."Did you hear me?" Mr Smith asked"Yes, grandpa, of course. Do you want me to come to the office?" Xavier asked trying to sound composed and less busy not knowing the sound of the boat engine in the background already gave him off."Actually, seems like you're busy. I want you at the apartment by 4pm sharp. Today."Mr Smith ended the call and sighed. As much as Xavier had his head in the business, he was also someone who loved to have fun at any point in time. He never missed the opportunity to party. Never in his life had he ever rejected and
Celine had gotten a call from her dad early in the morning. He asked her to come home that he had an important discussion that he wanted to have with her. She had gotten home that evening and met her father sitting in the living room, his palm placed under his chin. He was so deep in thoughts that he didn't notice his daughter come in."Dad? I said good evening!" Celine repeated herself seeing as her father didn't hear her the first time."I'm sorry my dear, I have a lot on my mind. Please take a sit" Celine sat directly opposite her father. She was confused as to what would make her father thinking so hard."So Celine, you know i have taken loans in the past to be able to make ends meet and also pay for your tuition?" She nodded in response and her father continued. "Most of those loan sharks are on my neck. I also have to pay tuition for your sophomore year too."Celine sighed and her father gave a slight smile and continued. "I went to my boss to ask for a raise and possibly a sa
Xavier is sitting on his bed deep in thoughts. He was 25 and had the life of everyone's dreams. I mean what more could he ask for? He knew how much wanted for his lineage to continue. It was the only reason they ever argued around the house. Xavier had even given Mr Smith the idea of adopting a kid but the old man had always replied with"Blood is thicker than water"There was no winning whenever he argued with his grandfather. He knew deep down that he had to do what the old man wanted else he wouldn't be able to bear the consequences. He had regretted his actions on the night of his 20th birthday. He's had to live with the guilt for five years now. The only way he deals with his guilt is to party like there was no tomorrow. And even though he partied a lot, he rarely took alcohol, he had come to dread the liquid..Whenever he wasn't partying, he was working. He would have his head buried in files all day working hard to make the family business bigger and better. His grandfather lik
Celine had given her conversation with her father a lot of thought. It wasn't making any sense to her. She was a firm believer in love marriages. Arranged marriages weren't her thing and her father of people knew that. The offer Mr Smith had made was very mouth watering...but sacrificing the rest of her life to be with some stranger in exchange for a comfortable life sounded like a good deal at the same time sounded like a really bad decision to make. She knew that if it were up to her father, he would have married her off immediately. She was grateful that he considered her feelings at least. She couldn't imagine if her father had given her no other option than to get married to the billionaire's grandson. She needed to talk to someone about it. She was usually busy trying to make ends meet so she had literally no friends. Well, except Zack her boyfriend, most times she wondered why he was with her. She brought absolutely nothing to the table, she was young and broke. She had big dre
"Look, James it's just a little favour. I really need this" Paul said to his friend over the phone. He had decided that he would do whatever it takes to make Celine marry Mr Smith's grandson. So he had called a doctor friend of his to request for a favour."What you're asking me to do is against my Ethics and you know I swore and oath before I was given my license" Dr James had said over the phone to Paul.Paul wanted a fake test result from James. The paper was to state that he had cancer and that he needed to undergo series of chemotherapy as soon as possible."Please James! For the sake of our friendship" Paul begged. He and James went way back to elementary school. They have been best of friends for as long as they could remember. Even when James went to Med school and Paul to Business School, they never lost contact of each other."It's only for a short while, it'll be over before you even realize and the document will be destroyed without traces" Paul promised.James coul
Early the next morning, Celine is making breakfast when her father comes out of room fully dressed for work. "But dad, you need to rest" She said with a look of disapproval. "Working is like weakening your immune system the more."Paul sighed, he didn't think this far. If he doesn't go to work it's going to make Mr Smith wonder if something was wrong. He should have told his boss of his plan before hand."I won't go after today. I just need to let them no at the office that I'll be taking a leave due to health issues" He told Celine. He couldn't think of other reasons that'll convince her to let him go except this one. "Alright dad" Celine shrugged " but at least have breakfast before you go, and also I have something to tell you" Paul sat at the table to enjoy the breakfast of pancakes and hot chocolate.Celine sat opposite her father too and watched him eat. Her emotions were like a rollercoaster as she watched him. He was the most important person in her life and she wasn't r
Later that night, as Celine was preparing to go to bed, she received a text from unknown number. The person introduced herself as Alexis and said she had been appointed by Mr Smith to be at Celine's every beck and call. More like a personal assistant.Alexis said Mr Smith had planned a date for Celine and Xavier to meet tomorrow. The date was to be at a fancy restaurant, so Alexis had asked Celine to meet her at the mall in the afternoon tomorrow for a bit of girls time before the date.Celine wasn't feeling the need for a personal assistant or even for a girls day out with some girl she had never met. She knew she couldn't back out now, she was doing this for her father.Alexis had even said Celine had to quit all her side jobs. Celine was cool with quitting all other jobs especially that one with the shady coffee shop but one job she didn't wish to quit was the one with the orphanage. She made that known to Alexis over the phone. The next day, she met Alexis at the mall. Alexis wa
Mr Smith had called Xavier into his room that afternoon, he felt like he needed to have a heart to heart conversation with him before he met Celine. Mr Smith was willing to let Xavier in on the little he knew about Celine."Wait! You mean it's not Maria you want me to marry?" Xavier had said in shock.Maria had been his friends since they were kids, they grew up together and basically did everything together. Party, drink and the likes. One the night of his 20th birthday she was also there and was like some sort of comfort to him during that period.Xavier knew his grandfather was good friends with Maria's family, so had thought in his head that he was going to get married to Maria, after all she was from a respectable family and also belonged to the high society."You want me to get married to your employee's daughter?" Xavier asked his grandfather. Some times he wondered what went on in the elderly man's head."Sit"Xavier who was on his fit before sat back down to listen to wha
Celine had put in effort to make sure that their anniversary was one that they both would remember for quite a while and it seemed like her plan had worked as Xavier wouldn't stop grinning throughout the ride home."Doesn't it hurt?" She asked"What?" Xavier asked, his brows arched but he was still grinning from ear to ear, "Your cheeks? Doesn't it hurt from all that grinning" She teased"I'm just so happy, I can't bring myself to stop grinning. I can even imagine anything I could do that could top what you did today baby""I know right…leave it to me to plan amazing memories for us." "That's like your superpower."Xavier parked the car once they had gotten into their house."Don't get down yet." He said to Celine who was about to push open the door next to her.Curious to see what he had in store, Celine sat back and let her husband do his thing.Xavier turned off the car and got off, he went round the front and opened Celine's door. She was going to get off but he stopped her."H
Celine had made plans to spend her wedding anniversary with Xavier at the orphanage, but the whole incident with Zack had made her halt her plans. She thought it would no longer be possible to celebrate it with him seeing as he wanted her to travel out of the country. But now that things were settled, her plans were back on track, she had spoken with Mama Lisa the night before and she had confirmed that things were still in place, all Celine had to do was to show up with Xavier. She looked up to see Xavier enjoying his breakfast wholeheartedly. He looked much more relaxed right now that he wasn't thinking about his job. She loved that she was able to enjoy moments like this with him."I'm going to be picking out your outfit for today," Celine told him. She had gotten them both matching outfits. She had gone for casual yet classy looks. She got them both a pair of white cargo pants each and specially customized hoodies, hers read "Mrs" and his read "Mr". They would accessorize their o
"Come home soon, i miss you 💓" Celine's text read. Xavier smiled when the screen of his phone lit up with that text. He was on him way home, later than usual. He knew she was going to be asleep by the time he got home. His wife was an early bird. She always went to bed early and woke up early. Her body clock never skips or misses it's scheduled and even at times when he came home late and she tried waiting uo for him to come back he usually met her asleep in the living room with the lights on and the TV playing in the background. This was one of the reasons he adjusted his schedule to make sure he mostly went home before her bedtime. He would always try his possible best to make sure he kissed her goodnight before she went to bed. But tonight wasn't one of those nights thanks to Zack's mischievous acts.Thinking back to Zack, Xavier's anger returned. He would have done worse than cut off his fingers before handing him off to the government, but he didn't because he knew Celine wouldn
"You should have told me about the letters," Xavier said, his voice low and angry. "I could have done something to protect you and the baby. Why didn't you tell me?" Celine stood silently, her head bowed, unable to meet her husband's eyes. She knew he was right - she should have told him. But she had been afraid of what he might do if he knew the truth."I'm sorry," Celine said, her voice trembling, Xavier had never been angry at her for this long, so why now? "I know I should have told you. I was just...afraid. Afraid of what you might do, and afraid of what might happen to you if you got involved." She took a deep breath, and looked up at her husband, her eyes pleading. "I'm so sorry, I just...I was scared." Xavier's expression softened, and he reached out to take his wife's hand. "I understand," he said. "I can't promise I won't be angry, but I promise I won't do anything rash." The tension between them has eased a bit, but there's still a lot to talk about. Celine speaks first,
Zack kept hitting the car window signaling to Celine to open it. "You have nowhere else to run to" he screamed from outside.Celine could feel her anger boiling at this point, why was he after her life so bad... what was it that she owed him that he tortured her so much with his existence. Picking her phone from her car's dashboard, she hurriedly dialed Xavier's number. Zack sensed that she was calling for help so he brought out a hammer from his pocket and started hitting the car window with it. "Come out of the car, Celine" he said while hitting the window, there was a crack on the window and he kept hitting.Xavier picked up the call as soon as it went through "Celine?".. he called from the other end of the line, he could hear her breathing heavily from her end of the line, he stood abruptly from the end of the desk where he sat, the meeting needed to stop, his wife needed him. "What is it?" He was beginning to hear the sound of glass smashing. "Where are you?"Celine was aware th
"I'm pregnant?..." Celine asked, eyes wide opened in shock…she couldn't believe she was going to be a mom very soon."Yes baby…we are having a baby…" Xavier responded, holding her tighter."This is the best news ever!!"Celine's joy knew no bounds, she was finally living the life she had always dreamed of, she could imagine seeing her kid smiling into her eyes….she squealed at the thought."I'm so happy for us Celine…"Xavier started to say "But we might have a little problem" He said, bursting the bubble.Celine signed as her shoulders sunk down, she knew what the problem was, it was Zack. She was beginning to wonder just how foolish and naive she must have been to have been in love with him once upon a time. How come she didn't see all his red flags. He was so sweet when they were together until things went sour and he became an alcoholic."You must have seen the news too.." she told her husband. "He wouldn't dare come near me." Celine said, half mindedly, she knew that what she said
Zack was sitting on the floor in his jailroom, his jaw was supporting his chin, he was lost in thoughts. He had been writing letters to Celine from the prison; he was wondering if she got any of the numerous letters he had sent. He was sure he got the address correctly. It wasn't easy getting her new address, he had to write to lots of other people who knew her before one of them finally gave in and let him in on her new address. It was in a fancy neighborhood but Zack didn't care, all he wanted was to get through to Celine. Their plan had to still be in place, right? He was thinking, "all she had with the rich kid was just a facade…" he murmured to himself."Bang!!" There was a loud bang coming from outside his cell… Zack jumped up with a start, he didn't know what to do? Was there a riot? He moved towards the cell gate and tried peeking through the bars….he could see the prison guards shuffling through…they were angrily hitting the bars with their batons…Zack hastily removed his han
He was biting at his nails… they weren't neat, dirt had found its way into the gap between the nail and the flesh of his finger but he didn't care, he was lost in thought. Time was ticking, the moment was drawing near and nearer. Finally, all that he had suffered for was finally going to be worth it, all he needed was a reason to finally leave this hellhole of a place. He needed to cause a distraction, one big enough to enable him to slip away from this place without being seen, after that all he needed was a simple conversation with Celine and that would be it, the end of Xavier Smith. 'if only Xavier knew what was coming to him' Zack thought and snickered devilishly."Hey, Inmate 5467, it's time for duty" a prison Warden called from outside his cell room, snapping him out of his wild imagination. Zack gave a hiss at the unwarranted interruption but he had no choice but to oblige. After all, being a model inmate was all part of the plan. 5 MONTHS LATER… .Celine woke up with a split
Zack had been arrested and Maria was dead, The wedding didn't turn out to be anyone's dream wedding but still Xavier and Celine were legally married and their bond couldn't have gotten any more stronger. The couple put in their best effort to let go of the memory of the incident that happened at their wedding ceremony and channeled all of their energy into enjoying their honeymoon. The honeymoon was enough to make up for the horrible mess of a wedding they had and they were okay with it.Sadly, their honeymoon had to be cut short as Celine had to return to the university for her finals and Xavier had to take over running the family business fully as Mr. Smith had officially retired. "I didn't want my death to meet me behind an office desk." Mr Smith had joked at his retirement party."My grandson, here,..."He said, raising his wine glass towards Xavier who stood hands intertwined with his wife. "He is very smart and diligent and I'm glad to announce to you all that Smith group of co
